Aigel's namesake is Aigel Gaisina, a singer and poet born in 1986 in Naberezhnye Chelny, a city in the Russian republic of Tatarstan. Aigel began writing and performing as a teenager, releasing the album Les in 2003 and earning attention for writing and translating in the Tatar language -- a point of interest after the Tatar population in Crimea, already subject to forced deportation by the Soviet Union during World War II, was subjected to further persecution following Russia's invasion and annexation of the Crimean peninsula in 2014.
