De la Vega was born in the mid-1980s and grew up on a farm in Jerrara, New South Wales, Australia, near Kiama. She discovered the flute at age seven before ever having seen a flute or imagined going to an orchestral concert; she was playing in the farm's garden and heard Jean-Pierre Rampal's recording of Mozart's Concerto in C major for flute, harp, and orchestra, K. 299, on a speaker from the house.
