Multinational group Aufgang's knotty, kinetic compositions reflect the musicians' classical training as well as their involvement in the dance music world. Originally consisting of pianist/composers Francesco Tristano and Rami Khalifé as well as drummer Aymeric Westrich, Aufgang released their self-titled debut album, a set of complex, genre-fusing pieces, in 2009. Their music gradually became more accessible, and following Tristano's departure from the group, 2016's Turbulences and 2021's Broad Ways blended pop, Middle Eastern, and techno influences.
