Biography

Carolyn Sampson has been proclaimed "the best British early music soprano by some distance" by the editors of Gramophone magazine. Often performing and recording the music of Handel, she has also appeared on conductor Masaaki Suzuki's cycle of Bach cantatas and has recorded music of eras later than the Baroque. Sampson was born on May 18, 1974, in Bedford, England. She attended the University of Birmingham, where she studied voice with Richard Smart and sang with the choir Ex Cathedra.
