Corcovado started as a lo-fi experimental indie duo in Grand Rapids, MI, releasing a self-titled album in 1999. In 2002, the band re-formed as a five-piece out of the development of basement jams. Their sound turned from the simple structures of demo-quality dream pop to a fuller, more complex indie shoegaze. The new interplay of Tina Louise (vocals, bells), Rebecca van der Leest (vocals, guitar), Matt Kurlinski (bass), Mike Newhouse (guitar), and Mike Christe (drums) conjured up the influences of Seely and Sonic Youth.
