Designer was the drum'n'bass alias of Chicago-based DJ, engineer and remixer Casey Rice, a longtime Tortoise associate and soundman whose extensive studio credits also include work with Liz Phair, Shrimp Boat, 5ive Style and Gastr del Sol. A native of Ohio who relocated to the Windy City during the late '80s, Rice (by day a recording engineer at Brad Wood's Idful Studios) debuted the Designer name in 1996 with the 12-inch "Vandal"; a remix of the track appeared on the Soul Static Sound label soon after.
