Composer Dorothy Howell wrote large-scale orchestral works in a late Romantic style and was dubbed the "English Richard Strauss" in the musical press. She was also an influential educator.
Howell was born in Birmingham, England, on February 25, 1898, and grew up in nearby Handsworth.
