One of Senegal's most influential guitarists, Jimi Mbaye was best known for his long musical partnership with singer Youssou N'Dour with whom he formed the band Étoile de Dakar (later Super Étoile) in the late-'70s. Often compared to Jimi Hendrix and Robert Johnson, Mbaye forged a unique blend of traditional Senegalese roots music and American pop and R&B.
