With her slyly sweet vocals, elliptically catchy songwriting, and effortless charm, Kim Deal is an indie rock icon. She first came to prominence in the late 1980s as the founding bassist for Pixies, where her insistent eighth-note bass lines and honeyed vocals brought a spark to songs such as Doolittle's "Here Comes Your Man" and Surfer Rosa's "Gigantic" (one of a handful of songs on which she sang lead).
