Originally formed in 1995 by vocalist and guitarist Tor Magne Glidje, Lengsel (which means "longing" in Norwegian) were a progressive black metal trio rounded out by bassist Jon Robert Mjåland and drummer Ole Halvard Sveen. United by Christianity, of all things, they released a critically acclaimed debut album entitled Solace in 2000, but their career would be cut short when all three of them agreed to join fellow Christian proggies Extol a short time later.
