Bloomfield, Indiana native Drew Auscherman of the band Hoops had already been in one lo-fi guitar pop band, Daguerreotype, with Jack Andrew when the duo decided to form Permit in 2016. Taking a step away from the chiming indie pop they made with Daguerreotype, the pair delved deep into their classic rock knowledge (especially Thin Lizzy and their dual-guitar attack), mixed it with some tape hiss, and sped it up until the RPMs reached dangerously high levels to come up with Permit's sound.
