b. Donovan Harris, c.1960, Western Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies. After leaving school he worked as a welder, following in the footsteps of many legendary reggae performers. In his leisure time he went to the local dances, and when given the opportunity to chat on the sound, the enthusiastic audience response inspired him to pursue a career as a DJ. He initially decided to call himself Peter Ranking, but discovered that another DJ used that name and had enjoyed a minor hit with ‘Sukiyaki'. Harris was a resident DJ on the sound Metromedia and adopted the pseudonym Peter Metro....
