When the Sex Pistols fell apart in the wake of their first American tour in early 1978, lead singer Johnny Rotten opted to turn his back on the group's legacy and approach, reclaiming his given name, John Lydon, and forming a more experimental and stylistically innovative group, Public Image Ltd.
