Norwegian black metallers Vreid ("wrath," in their native tongue) emerged out of the embers of the critically acclaimed Windir, after that group's leader and chief songwriter, Terje "Valfar" Bakken, perished in a snowstorm while hiking across the remote countryside of his native Sogndal. Debuting in 2004 with Kraft, Vreid has remained at the forefront of the Norwegian black metal scene, issuing high concept albums like I Krig (2007), Milorg (2009), Sólverv (2015), and Wild North West (2021) that pair heavy and melodic extreme Norse metal with historically inspired lyrics.
