Speaker 1 (00:01):
Then news this hour, I'm Doug Davis. Coming up, we'll
hear from esteem black educator, doctor Valerie Camille Jones. Ford
was recently inducted into the National Teacher's Hall of Fame
for her outstanding teaching approach, a blending math with music
and creative engagement. Standby for our conversation on black student
education in a changing political landscape. But first, here's bin news.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Now, Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Janilius is cracking down
on misuse of license plate data after Texas police allegedly
used it to track a woman over abortion care.

Speaker 1 (00:32):
When this data is being used to track people getting abortions,
or for ice to use to track down individuals based
on immigration policy, that is a very slippery slope.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
Illinois now has cut off access to out of state
agencies violating the rules. In North Carolina, police falsely accused
a black tow truck driver of stealing a car he
legally towed. Officers tried to seize the vehicle from Casey's
Towing in Greensboro, but backed off after a city attorney intervened.
The incident is now under internal investigation, and the Black
Missing North Carolina team has been found safe after fleeing

(01:04):
home in a paranoid state for several days. Seventeen year
old Deonte James had smoked synthetic marijuana. His family is
now warning others about the dangers of synthetic drugs. Get

Speaker 1 (01:18):
Hey, Thanks, Brey, So happy to have you with us.
Doctor Valerie Camille Jones Ford National Teacher's Hall of Fame honoree.
You've made a profound impact on students and those in
the education community. You are known for your groundbreaking approach
of blending math with music and creative interaction and transforming
the way students connect with math. Welcome to the bi In,

(01:39):
doctor jones Ford. You know, with DEI initiatives being rolled
back under Trump's administration, black students and educators face new barriers,
fewer resources, a race history, and fights for racial equity.
My question to you is how do you see these
changes affecting black students at educators.

Speaker 3 (02:00):
I think it depends on how you handle the changes.
You know, there's always going to be space and room
to make sure that every child is seen in the
classroom it's up to us educators to figure out how
to connect what the kids care about into our learning.
And if they care about things that are diverse, if

(02:22):
they care about things that involve social justice, then we
can't be afraid of bringing that into the classroom. If
it's really about the kids and their learning.

Speaker 1 (02:32):
Doctor Jones Ford, could you give me an example of
what you're talking about, help us see what that might
look like.

Speaker 3 (02:39):
For example, in my class, we did a project where
we realized that we were in a food desert. Our
school was in a food desert. There wasn't really a
lot of food options. There's a local community grounds store
near us and they have a grocery store for the
community and a lot of people go there. But outside
of that, you know, there's not a lot of options anymore.

(03:01):
So we discussed that in class and we talked about
what that meant as far as our community and how
we can find ways to overcome that. And then I
tied mac into it by having them on the cordint
plane kind of plot out the locations of ample food sources, right,
And that's how I incorporated distance formula and my important

(03:23):
formula into the lesson. So we have really real talks
about how we can affect change. But at the same time,
we still uphold the standards that are required for math content.

Speaker 1 (03:32):
But you know, there's a lot of black educators and
educators who you know, are supportive of DEI efforts that
a kind of they're scared to touch on anything related
to black that maybe hasn't been approved from a curriculum standpoint.
You navigated around that, But let's talk about some of
the more deeper challenges when it comes to our history

(03:53):
and you know, the important elements that our forefathers have
you know, put forth to make country great. You know
the way it is today. How do you navigate around that?
Doctor Jones Ford, if you could answer that question coming up,
Please stick around, folks, stay informed, stay connected, and subscribe.
I'll follow BI in News this Hour or wherever you
