our community, y'all. It is upon us. Not my birthday,
that was a few days ago. But I've got a

her to you, Lodia Yeates. What's going on?

Speaker 2 (00:27):
Hey, what's going on? Stormy?

Speaker 1 (00:29):
How much girl? Girl?

Speaker 2 (00:30):
We up in here?

Speaker 1 (00:31):
I'm pumped about nine oh one day? Are you it's today?
I'm very excited. Yes, it is. Uh so nine on
one day basically started. Did it start after the pandemic?
Was it when we were when people started just having
a lot of pride in their cities and things like that.

Speaker 3 (00:50):
I want to say so, yeah, the last one was
either last year or the year before.

Speaker 1 (00:54):
And so we started doing things for our cities and
repping our cities in ways that nobody had ever done before.
I think everybody probably across the country started to have
pride in where they lived, and you know, those kinds
of things. It became popular and became it was always
popular to be a Memphian, but became even more popular
I think during the pandemic because we all we got

(01:15):
or we all we had. You know what I'm saying. Yeah, yeah,
So September first, ladies and gentlemen, and most of you
are listening to the show on September first, so you
you're Today's the day. But for those of you that
are listening the day before, yeah, you can celebrate today too,
but not on one day is September first, And Latia
has been working with the City of Memphis because she

(01:37):
is doing some things.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
Y'all, Latia, what's going on, girl? What's happening?

Speaker 3 (01:42):
So September first, Sunday, we are having the biggest city
wide event celebrating the culture of Memphis.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
So I'm super excited to.

Speaker 3 (01:55):
Be a part of this whole event, experience a positive event. Yes,
this is my first time organizing an event of this
magnitude and I'm very thankful to have this opportunity given
to me by the City of Memphis. Paul YOUNGSSI, Paul Young. Yes,
So I want everybody to come out. Let's have a

(02:17):
good time. It's gonna be positive. We have a lot
of stuff going on.

Speaker 1 (02:20):
Is that your cell phone? I'm hearing you've been I
know what happened you've been your phone's been ringing a
lot because people want to be a part of this event.
They do and they're coming. So you've been all over
the city basically telling everybody in Memphis that if you
love Memphis and you're about the culture, then nine O
one day is definitely what you want to be a
part of. Tell us where the city of Memphis is

(02:43):
celebrating nine O one day.

Speaker 3 (02:45):
So nine O one day, we'll be on Bill Street
all through Bill.

Speaker 1 (02:48):
All through so forth. Okay, okay, all day?

Speaker 3 (02:51):
So what times from eleven am to five thirty pm?

Speaker 1 (02:54):
Ooh, so it's really is all day? And I'm let
me check the weather because I hear the weather's gonna
be beau. Yes, yes, we have nice weather. Okay, so
that's good. That's a weather check.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
You prayed, we prayed.

Speaker 1 (03:08):
Uh huh huh, God's giving us good weather. I mean,
so eleven o'clock? Is there an itinerary? Is there are
still there are things like when are we doing the
flash mob thing? Girl? Tell me?

Speaker 2 (03:19):
So the flash mob is gonna be around two o'clock.
I'm leading that.

Speaker 3 (03:23):
And you guys saw all the videos, so you should
know the routine by now. We're gonna go over one time,
maybe twice, and we're gonna hit it. So that's my
favorite part of the entire event. But we do have
a headliner, Big Boogie, and a special guest as well,
but I can't speak on.

Speaker 1 (03:37):
It, so.

Speaker 2 (03:40):
Yes, so it's gonna be amazing.

Speaker 3 (03:41):
We have a poetry Slam, we have vendors, we have
live painters, we have face painting. We got a lot
of activities for the youth. We have a Youth Talent Showcase,
not talent show, it's a talent showcase.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
So everyone's a winner.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
Okay.

Speaker 3 (03:56):
We have the trivia game by unapologetically men Fish, So
we're gonna have some contestants come on stage answer some yeah, okay.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
Yeah, you're gonna win some money and some merche.

Speaker 3 (04:09):
The Grizzlies are one of our biggest sponsors, okay, as
well as Red Bull. We're giving our free red Bull
all day. Downtown Memphis Commission Bield Street, City of Memphis,
l y E Academy. We all put this together, and
I mean, y'all ca miss this. If you do, you're
gonna be mad because you're gonna see the You're gonna

(04:31):
be mad as you didn't go.

Speaker 1 (04:32):
Yeah, I just want to say thank you for trying
to for letting me, Sue and Tracy be your professional
backup dancers.

Speaker 2 (04:40):
I mean, what other? I mean, who's better than you three?

Speaker 3 (04:42):
To help me out with a dance routine that he
used to see were so professional.

Speaker 1 (04:47):
We tore it up in the worst way to me.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
You actually did pretty good, okay, thank you?

Speaker 3 (04:54):
Yeah. Almost as good as Pa Almost as good as
Paul Young.

Speaker 1 (04:58):
You know what I love about it? It's the day
dance that you're doing. It's it's not just Memphis, but
it's pretty easy, yeah, for anybody to do. So did
you come up with this dance?

Speaker 2 (05:06):
I did?

Speaker 1 (05:07):
So this is gonna be one of those dances that
we're gonna have to do every year, right, Okay, I'm
here for.

Speaker 3 (05:14):
And it was a challenge, Fune, it really is.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
You made it fun. It's it's it's for people to
get a little exercise.

Speaker 2 (05:22):
Right.

Speaker 1 (05:22):
So if you're if you're trying to do the dance,
you go to check out our video on social media.
Latia posted it. It's probably on my social air but
v one on one social in my heart, yeah, city
of Memphis. Uh, you check the video out and before
you go down there, you can. You can learn the
dance because yeah, this this show is gonna be airing
pretty much all day, so you got time to learn

(05:44):
the dance and then get down there and do the dance.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
I'm on that.

Speaker 1 (05:48):
Yeah, so this is gonna be good. It is. So
what else are we doing down there, Latia? And how
big of I guess how much was this for you
as a personal venture to become a part of, because
I know you do a lot of stuff in the
city I do.

Speaker 3 (06:05):
This was a challenge, but it was a great experience,
a great learning experience. And I do a lot of
events for my dance company, Lye Academy, and you know,
we have great turnouts, great events, but that kind of
caters just to my kids, my company. So this is
a city wide event. So this is like kind of
the first for me. And I mean I'm excited. I'm

(06:28):
sure you see online that I've just been smiling and
dancing because I just know how great it's gonna be.

Speaker 1 (06:33):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
Yeah, and it's free, doesn't.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
Cost my favorite come on, free, free and highly secured.
Paul is not playing about security at all. That's the
main thing that he cares about. So come out have
a good time, bring good vibes only, and we're just
going to show people that we know how to get
together and come together in the masses and have a
great time. And it's going to be positive and that's

(06:57):
all that I want. That's all, you know. Yeah, we
should expect.

Speaker 1 (07:02):
Yeah, and it's lovely that it is a part of Memphis.
So I guess since we have you here, you not
as well tell us what's going on at Lye.

Speaker 3 (07:11):
Okay, so Lye Academy is a dance company. For those
who don't know, we're stationed in Kyerville, but the majority
of my students are from the inner city of Memphis, probably.

Speaker 2 (07:22):
All we just moved there.

Speaker 3 (07:26):
We have programs and dance classes such as ballet, hip hop,
major red, Tumbling, Memphis, Jukin, Kids, cardio, probably more than
I can't think of off the top of my head.
But we operate pretty much Monday through Saturday, sometimes Sundays
if we have special events.

Speaker 1 (07:46):
And you have kids from ages what.

Speaker 2 (07:49):
Three or so, yeah, three to sixteen seventeen.

Speaker 3 (07:52):
I even have some of my kids that's older than
sixteen that just like coach, let me teach us something.

Speaker 2 (07:56):
I don't want to leave. I don't want to leave Ye.

Speaker 3 (07:58):
So now I have a transitioned some of my students
into coaching.

Speaker 1 (08:02):
Really wow.

Speaker 2 (08:04):
So it's like we're a family.

Speaker 3 (08:05):
We're very type, very close, very deep, and you know,
we're open to more.

Speaker 2 (08:11):
Students, having more students.

Speaker 3 (08:12):
So if you want to be involved in l Ye Academy,
the best thing you can do is really just pull up.
We're open from five o'clock to about eight eight thirty
on a weekdays. The emails get drowned out, the social
medias get drowned out, so we will respond to you,
but you're gonna have to be patient. However, the best
thing to do is to pull up and roll and
get started. We are on a role. We're about to

(08:34):
get into competition season, traveling, have some TV shows coming up.

Speaker 2 (08:39):
I can't wait till you see that national TV show.

Speaker 1 (08:41):
Wait wait a minute, because Lye, you guys have been
pretty much highlighted on a lot of things and even
with a lot of celebrities as well.

Speaker 3 (08:50):
One of our main artists that we work with is
in Eli Chapel. We've done some stuff with Big Buoye.
We've done some stuff with Little Baby. You can see
us in his whole video and more than that, we
are the face of Nike Kids. We do a lot
of work with Red Bull. Our older kids do a
lot of work with Red Bull. It's so much that
comes our way and its and it's so much that's

(09:12):
coming our way right now that I have to put
on hold because of not on one day, but I
cannot wait till that comes out. We have major TV
shows and networks coming to Memphis to come like video
Us and do interviews because they're really interested in l
Ye and I just I'm excited about it because you know,

(09:33):
it's not a lot of that.

Speaker 2 (09:34):
We don't get a lot of those type.

Speaker 3 (09:35):
Of opportunities in Memphis, especially for it to be positive.
So yeah, I'm glad that they're calling. I'm glad that
we are on the radar. I'm glad that we're a
hot commodity. But I'm glad that is positive more than anything.
We're not on there for fighting or mad kids or
Rocker case. Maybe we're being highlighted for positive things only.

Speaker 1 (09:56):
So what was it like, Because you guys you took
your kids to go down at a church at Kreflo
dollars church. I forgot.

Speaker 3 (10:04):
Yeah, Oh, we do praise dancing. Yep, we do praise dancing.

Speaker 2 (10:08):
Baby.

Speaker 3 (10:08):
Whoever calls somebody from Africa, call, We're doing African dance
and we're gonna figure it out.

Speaker 2 (10:12):
Whatever you need, we come and we're gonna learn.

Speaker 3 (10:14):
We're gonna figure it out. So, yeah, we did something
with Kreflo Dollar. I mean, I'm sure it's many more
artists that we've worked with in companies and programs that
I just can't think of off the top of my head.

Speaker 1 (10:27):
But what's what's with you? What's what's why is it
your heart to help these kids? And what do you
see when you see the little ones dancing and expressing
themselves and loving it? What do you what do you see?

Speaker 3 (10:43):
It's just who I am. I almost can't even explain it. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
And I just get a thrill and and it just
comforts me to be able to give back, give opportunities,
be a stepping stone for kids to do what they
love to do, because I feel like that's something that
I lacked when I was younger.

Speaker 1 (11:04):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (11:05):
Yeah, And so nurturing them while they're very young, I mean,
you just don't know what they're going to become by
the time they're out of high school.

Speaker 2 (11:15):
You know what I'm saying.

Speaker 3 (11:16):
And I just want to be a part of that
and I want to help them out and you know,
help them grow their wings and sowred.

Speaker 2 (11:22):
And that's just something I like to do. There's really
no explanation. I like to do it.

Speaker 3 (11:25):
Obviously, been doing it for ten years so far. L
ye is you know we did our anniversary anniversary that
you hosted this year anniversary. That was a lot of fun, right,
thank you. We loved you and we enjoyed it. And so,
you know, being in business for ten years, I got
to love what I do.

Speaker 2 (11:44):
That's a long time. A lot of businesses don't don't
last that long.

Speaker 1 (11:48):
Don't last a year, I know, some don't last time.
I know some don't last five. I know.

Speaker 3 (11:54):
And it's been a challenge I wouldn't say lately, but
I've went through some things and I've had some challenge.
Is that that almost caused me to quit a billion times?

Speaker 1 (12:04):
A billion times? But what's your get what's your get
up and go? What makes you get up and go?
Because I've seen a lot of your challenges on social media.
I've seen some of the stuff.

Speaker 2 (12:13):
Talk to me right now real soccer.

Speaker 3 (12:16):
Yeah, so like yeah, it's weird stuff and stuff like
that happens all the time. Yeah, yeah, so it's yeah,
weird fans like buying tickets to come out here saying
they're going to live the rest of their life with
me from other countries, crazy like crazy stuff. Oh yeah,
I guess that's just what comes with fame.

Speaker 2 (12:41):
Sign me up. I don't like it.

Speaker 1 (12:45):
Pollularity when people love you and and and being a
global going viral globally, which is what you've got, viral
a lot, yeah, viral, so yeah weekly. Yeah, so it
comes that kind of stuff unfortunately comes with it. But
you but you seem very grounded and you seem like
you got it together. I saw your mama. Your mama
was like, I don't know who you are, but what

(13:09):
you want.

Speaker 3 (13:09):
Yeah, every baby the city don't play about me. I
love y'all, mephis y'all so protective of l Ye and
myself and you know, Memphis. It sometimes it frustrates me
because like, Memphis has a lot to offer, It's very
rich in culture. There's some talented individuals here, Like I

(13:29):
feel like these dancers on my team are some of
the best dancers in the world and they're from Memphis.

Speaker 1 (13:34):
I believe it.

Speaker 3 (13:35):
Yes, that's what I'm saying exactly. So it's like, you know,
if they're nurtured and uh, if we pay attention to them,
things would change.

Speaker 1 (13:46):
I think that's part of you know, we we we
talk about a lot in our city about the youth
and the problems in our city. And I feel like
what you are doing and what others similar to you
are doing, that's part of the solution. Where you're giving
children another alternative. You're giving them a way to feel,

(14:10):
You're giving self confidence, you know, something that kids get
when they are a part of something, when they're where
they don't feel excluded from life. You know, you're giving
them a life lesson because they've got to come together
with other kids. They got to learn how to get along.
They're making lifelong friends and friendships away from bad things

(14:33):
an idle mind. They're doing something. You see what I'm saying.
And when people when we get involved like that, either
if it's going to school and tutoring, if it's mentoring,
if it's doing something to give these children an option,
because some of them all they want is an option
and they feel like they don't have it. You know
what I'm saying, Yeah, so you're part of the solution.

Speaker 2 (14:57):
Thank you for that, and I'm glad to be here.

Speaker 3 (15:00):
And we just gotta keep we gotta keep pushing, and
you gotta you do have to get them early and
as soon as you can, because a lot of these
kids are so deep in it that it's like it's
gonna take jail to help them. And that's what we
don't we don't want. You know what I'm saying because
I'm very tapped into the community. I'm I'm cool with

(15:22):
the politicians, the government, and the killers, so I know
what's going on on all aspects and I know that,
you know, we gotta we gotta really pay attention to
these kids and pour into them. Yeah, now you're right, Yeah,
And I what you think they should do? Talk to them?
What do they want to do? How can you know

(15:44):
what I'm saying, How can we help you? What are
you you know, like, don't push your agenda on it. Well,
I think they need to do this, go to church,
play basketball. Maybe that's not what they want to do.
Like you have to see what they want to do.

Speaker 1 (15:59):
You know what I was telling some of people on
the radio the other day. I was talking about, you
know how my grandson is now a teenager. He's a
a what do you call him when they're getting at
nineteen twenty age? A young adult? He's a young adult,
so a man. He's not a kid, he's a man.
And I was talking to them about you know, sometimes

(16:21):
I wish I had a translator, because I feel like
the things that I have to say sometimes to young people,
not everything, but some of some of the stuff that
I have to say is antiquated. And I say that
because sometimes that is my approach, and that what you
just said don't always work. You need to go to college,

(16:44):
you need to do this, you need to do that,
you know, just all in their ear saying you know,
whatever sounds good to me, that may not sound good
to them. You know what I'm saying, And it's like you,
I feel like, I feel like I want to learn
how to meet you where you are.

Speaker 3 (17:05):
That's exactly what I'm saying. That's what I was trying
to say.

Speaker 1 (17:09):
Instead of meeting you where I want you to be.

Speaker 3 (17:16):
Exactly, And that's what I was trying to say. Right there,
you just nailed it.

Speaker 1 (17:19):
So yeah, it's it's it's but it's it's a dance.
It's something that you don't always get right when you
talk to a young person in the beginning, you don't
always get it right.

Speaker 2 (17:30):
And I'm gonna tell you this too.

Speaker 3 (17:31):
I'm telling you because I know, because I know these people,
they gotta trust you.

Speaker 1 (17:39):
There you go, That's what I'm talking about, and that's
how you get them to trust you. I feel like.

Speaker 3 (17:46):
Whatever you talking about and they ain't hearing it, trying
to hear, they.

Speaker 1 (17:49):
Ain't trying to hear. Well, y'all, y'all gotta get this
dance together. I'm gonna let y'all hear a little bit
of what Lottia did with the mayor because she got
together Hunter, she got up professional dancers and together.

Speaker 2 (18:00):
So I'm how to do the flash mob routine. Y'all
hear that she's doing the flash backup dancers.

Speaker 3 (18:07):
We had the communications here, Miss Penelope Houston, and we
have mayors Paul Young, Okay, So they aren't a routine.

Speaker 2 (18:15):
So I'm just gonna go over.

Speaker 1 (18:20):
All right. So this is so much fun to watch,
and it's so Memphis, you know what I'm saying. It's
so Memphis. And you went down to the city Hall
to do this in the bay.

Speaker 3 (18:29):
Because Paul, you're finna do this routine. He even running
from the routine forever.

Speaker 2 (18:33):
I'm like, you know, let me just go on to
his office.

Speaker 1 (18:35):
Listen. And you did that, and you got him into
that thing kind of, you know, pretty much like you
got us into it.

Speaker 2 (18:41):
Yeah, I gotta see it, y'all.

Speaker 1 (18:43):
We we had no idea what we were doing, you know,
but I think we I think we did a pretty
good job. And I think it is easy. The dance
is really easy, and it a couple of times. Yeah,
I think anybody could do it from a from a baby.
My daughter could do Yeah, from from a baby or yes,
that's what I'm getting ready to say, doesn't matter how

(19:04):
old you are.

Speaker 3 (19:05):
That's how easy I tested out the dance. I want
to see if my daughter could do it and my grandma.
They both could, so I'm like, okay, they.

Speaker 1 (19:10):
Can do it. Wow. Yeah, it's easy and it's like
I said, it's fun. So, y'all, nine on one day
is going to be so much fun. Bill Street is
going to be lit. You said eleven or eleven thirty.

Speaker 3 (19:21):
Eleven am, y'a, ten thirty, ten thirty and then five
pm and twenty ends around that time.

Speaker 1 (19:36):
Five thirty huh five thirty okay, so a lot of surprises.
I actually a couple of weeks ago, well, yeah, a
couple of weeks ago I interviewed Marcus nine on one
and that's all I got. He said, he said he
was doing something. They were doing something special too, uh huh.
So that's all. That's all I'm gonna say.

Speaker 2 (19:58):
That's it.

Speaker 1 (19:58):
That's all right, right, got him future and bang he
came out and hung out with the Yeah.

Speaker 3 (20:05):
They're a part of the DJ and juke and battle
segment as well.

Speaker 1 (20:08):
Ah, y'all, this sounds like it's just gonna be so
much fun. Is it anything or is everything for the
kids and for the adults? Is it all family friendly events? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (20:21):
So yes, it caters to all.

Speaker 1 (20:26):
Now y'all got y'all gonna have any food down Yanda were.

Speaker 2 (20:29):
On Bill Street.

Speaker 3 (20:33):
Yeah, you gotta go in the restaurants, support the merchants,
and we also have vendors. They'll be all through Bill Streets.
Local business and that's what.

Speaker 1 (20:43):
Not on one Day is all about the support the
support of small businesses in Memphis, Memphis, Memphis, Memphis. And
you do have like you said, you got a lot
of people that are going to be there. I know
you said Big Boogie is going to be there.

Speaker 2 (20:59):
Yeah, he's had. But I mean, do you need.

Speaker 1 (21:01):
Me to come sing some gospel music or something down there?

Speaker 2 (21:03):
Because close closed, The line up closed. The line up
is closed.

Speaker 1 (21:11):
That's cold. That's cold. Okay, go ahead with your lineup.
Tell me what who's gonna be down there. I'm just
gonna get with them. I'm gonna get with Big Boogie, right.
You know I met Big Boogie up here not long ago.
So I'm gonna holler at my boy.

Speaker 3 (21:21):
Right, he gonna be there. You know, he gonna shut
it down. Baby, come on there, you know what's going on.
So we have on the alfred Stage. So Alfreds is
a restaurant in bar and has the stage and they're
on boh, it's not far from the Shell on Wheel stage,
which is gonna be on fourth. So all the main
acts will be on Shell on Wheel stage, you know

(21:42):
the mobile Shell. Yeah, they gotta be parked on fourth.
So then on third you have Alfred's. Alfreds is the
inside venue and they will have multiple artists performing.

Speaker 2 (21:53):
You have Kendrick P.

Speaker 3 (21:55):
White, Sosa, you have a Trippy Tripic, Big Hanna, Burial Boys.
You got a few vocalist and then also you have
the poetry slim in there as well, right after the
artist stage. So you got the poetry carm alone. Yep,
it's actually a contest. The poet will win an award

(22:15):
if I'm not mistaken, a cash prize. So that's gonna
be super super super dope. And then we have the
Youth Talent Showcase. So it's not a talent show, it's
a showcase. Everyone's a winner. So you have y e
of course, you know my kids are not going to play.
And you have mckenneth Cherry. He's so amazing. He's a
young man with an old so I'll call him uncle,

(22:36):
but he like what does he do? He reminds me
of King George.

Speaker 2 (22:41):
If you want to leave, baby, are you.
