She is no stranger to w D I A and
the Bev Johnson Show, My sister friend and Bailey Mitchell,
who is the president of the Friends of the Library.
Speaker 3 (01:08):
Hey, sister, I'm how you doing today. I'm wonderful. How
are you doing?
Speaker 2 (01:14):
Good? Good?
Speaker 4 (01:14):
I hadn't seen you since last year.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
Yes, for the fall book sale. I was here, that's right,
and I'm.
Speaker 4 (01:20):
Back again, back again for the.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
Spring yes sale, you know, and.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
I'm glad to have you before we talk about that
and somebody is listening for the first time, and tell
our listeners who are the Friends of the Library.
Speaker 3 (01:36):
Thank you for asking Bell, because sometimes I think I
talk about the Friends so much that some people may
think was that all she talks about?
Speaker 2 (01:46):
Right?
Speaker 3 (01:46):
But I like for people to ask because we do
so much for the library system, all eighteen branches. So
the Friends is a nonprofit group. We're all volunteers and
we work tiresly all year long to support all eighteen branches.
Anybody can become a friend because we have memberships as
(02:14):
little as five dollars.
Speaker 4 (02:16):
A year, wow.
Speaker 3 (02:17):
And we have family memberships, we have senior memberships and BEV.
I don't think people know that we support the library
in so many different ways. Not only do we advocate
for the library, but we also raise funds for things
(02:39):
like furniture collections and those different books. For staffing, we
advocate for better hours and we're committed to helping. We
have the staff with creative and innovative programs, and we
also make sure that our libraries in each community is
(03:02):
there for the citizens in that community and for those
visitors that are coming into Memphis. Not many people know
that our library is a gem in this nation. We
are the only library that has won the National Merit
Award twice. What, Yes, the only library twice, Wow, and BEB.
(03:27):
That's because of our friends their support. Those funds go
to help each branch put on unique programs that the
staff develops, creates, executes that sets us apart from any
library in the nation, and we're just so proud to
(03:47):
be part of that that we know that our efforts
help make us the best in the nation. We put
on programs that are community wants, senior healthfare, teen Arts fest.
(04:07):
This year, we're doing the Anger Up Church child Development
program where you can come in and get certified for
your daycare center. Wow, did I mention all of this
is free?
Speaker 4 (04:19):
No, you didn't.
Speaker 3 (04:20):
It's free because of the contributions from friends. I'm going
to talk about the bookseller today, but what I want
people to keep on their mind today is there is
now a proposal out there from our president to stop
all funding for libraries and museums.
Speaker 4 (04:41):
Yeah, isn't that crazy.
Speaker 3 (04:44):
I can't even imagine it, I know, but I know Mithians.
We're a very generous city. I pray that doesn't happen,
but if it does, we need your support to make
sure that our libraries stay the best in the country.
We're not going to let somebody take that away from us.
(05:07):
So please go on our website Memphis Libraryfriends dot org
and join Friends. If you don't want to become a
volunteer or join, just make a donation. But we need
to show those who don't want to support our libraries
we can do this ourselves. The Friends has been here
(05:29):
since nineteen sixty two. We're not going anywhere, and we're
going to keep funding our libraries. So we said, come on,
we got bookstock coming up, but sixty authors, we'll be
there and we're partnering with the city and the foundation.
We work every day to make sure that the Memphis
(05:52):
community has the best in each library branch. And that's
what the Friends does good.
Speaker 2 (06:00):
We need to keep our libraries, and yes we need
to because people need to know and can go there
and have fun but get information, you know, be educated
at the life. So we need our libraries.
Speaker 4 (06:17):
We need you.
Speaker 3 (06:18):
I always tell people it's the best place to go
for free therapy, art classes, yoga, you name it. If
you want it, it's at the library. If it's not,
let us know. And we were looking to getting it
for you. But we put all our funding to make
sure that you have these opportunities free of charge. So please,
(06:45):
if you're not a Friend, please join stop by the
book sal It starts this Thursday, April the twenty fourth.
Speaker 4 (06:52):
This is the spring book sales.
Speaker 3 (06:53):
Spring book Sale, yes, okay, it's an opportunity really for
us to revisit with all of our friends come back
every book sale. It's like a big family reunion and
we get to say thanks to everybody this year. Like
last year, we'll sell t shirts and bags. We'll have
(07:14):
little trinkets at say friends, so we can help support
the library. But this is a four day event, okay.
So it starts on Thursday. That's remembers. If you're not
a member, come anyway and join. You be a member
right that day from three to seven pm at the

five pm, and we conclude on Sunday, April twenty seventh,
from eleven am to two pm. You will not find
(07:58):
a larger selection of books, CDs, DVDs, records, children's books, comics, magazines.
We will have it all at extremely low prices. And
as I said, all the funding, every penny goes to
(08:19):
help her libraries.
Speaker 2 (08:20):
Okay, so Anne be clear on Thursday. This Thursday, y'all,
April twenty fourth, three d seven. That's for the members only.
Speaker 3 (08:34):

so please come. Don't let that stop you. It's members Day.
They get first pick of all of the books and
all of the merchandise that we have. But we welcome everybody.
Anybody can come in. We'll sign you up right there
for a member. And like I said, is this little
(08:59):
as five five dollars a year for students, educators, first
responders for a whole year. You can find all eighteen branches.
Speaker 4 (09:10):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (09:11):
Now on Friday, it starts at ten am correct until
six pm. Oh that's a good time. So people can
come out books, I love you, you have CDs, vinyl, Yes, going.
Speaker 4 (09:29):
To have all that, all that and more.
Speaker 3 (09:32):
And we restock every day. Oh tell you you will
have a selection, a new selection. If you come on Thursday,
maybe you didn't see something you want. Come back on Friday.
We restock at the end of each day. We've restocked
during the day, So please come every day so you
(09:53):
can look and see the selection. Buy for your friends,
your family. This makes great Mother Day gifts. Oh Father's Day.
You can buy early for Christmas. I love cookbooks. I
may not cook what's in it, but I love looking
at the pictures. And I purchased them just for that,
just to say, you know, one day I may cook this.
(10:16):
And I'm looking for gardening. If you're into gardening. We
have so many books, it's amazing. One of the wonderful
things about Friends also is if you are an organization
that needs books for outreach, you can let us know.
There's a form you fill out on our website and
(10:38):
we will send you the books. Just let us know,
give us about a two week's notice to pull the
books for you. But we do outreach. We have an
Amazon store. If we would like to go online and
purchase books, we have memphol is what we call it,
and we have second editions. I use Bookstore, which is
the best bookstore in the and it's actually housed in
(11:02):
the Ben Hooks Library. All the sales from the book
sales in the bookstore in Amazon goes to help the library.
Speaker 2 (11:11):
Okay, so then we have Friday, then come back on Saturday.
Speaker 3 (11:16):
Saturday again from ten am to five pm. Enjoy it
all day.
Speaker 4 (11:23):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (11:24):
We will have food trucks out there, because.
Speaker 4 (11:27):
I was going to ask you. Yeah, usually you'll have
and food trucks. So food trucks will be there on
Saturday on site.
Speaker 3 (11:33):
So if you're hungry, go get a bite to eat
and come back and shop some more.
Speaker 2 (11:37):
Okay, and then Sunday, Now what is this and the
bag sell on Sunday On.
Speaker 3 (11:43):
Sunday, that's the last day. So everything that you can
get in a bag that we provide for you or
a box that we provide for you, you get it
for six or twelve dollars. Yeah, it's amazing.
Speaker 4 (12:02):
Yeah, we love it.
Speaker 3 (12:03):
So if you're a book lover, if you like me,
I still like having the book in my hand and
doing in the pages. Yeah, please come out and support us.
Everything you can get in a bag or a box
is one low price, and.
Speaker 2 (12:18):
Our listeners need to know and that you have again,
as you said, an assortment of all kinds of books.
Speaker 3 (12:28):
Yes, if you can think of the genre, we have it.
From children's young adults. We call them bathtub books for
a little infants if you want them to be able
to sit in the bathtub with it, because the sooner
you start them reading and appreciating books, the better African
(12:50):
American books a large selection. We have westerns if you're
into that science fiction romance. We also have a lot
of what we call vacation or beach books. If you're
getting ready to go on vacation, we can point you
to that section. We have oh, books that didn't quite
(13:18):
make it through print that they call unedited books, So
if you want to see a book that has not
been edited yet, a lot of people love those. We
have coffee table books, so if you're one of those
people that likes a nice selection of books to put
out on your coffee table, we can help you with that.
Speaker 4 (13:39):
Also sounds good. Yeah, yeah, all kinds of books.
Speaker 2 (13:43):
I had this email in from Jay and Jay wanted
to know has the new Fraser location opened yet?
Speaker 3 (13:51):
Jay, if you have not driven by, please do to
answer your question. Though it has not opened yet, Okay,
but it's so close, is so close to opening, so
stay tuned for that. I'm sure the library will make
an announcement soon. But it is beautiful and we're on
a few cities. Also, that's building new lives.
Speaker 4 (14:14):
Oh, this is.
Speaker 3 (14:16):
This is brand new Oh Frasier. Yes, it's gonna be
on James Row. Okay, Okay, please support the Friends so
we can help support this new branch. Also, so the
Friends group out there is looking for volunteers. If you
want to volunteer there. You can volunteer at any branch
(14:37):

need volunteers at Ben Hooks to help us sort books.

to help us. If anyone is interested, you can text

and we start on Thursday.
Speaker 4 (15:34):
On Thursday.
Speaker 3 (15:35):
Now, I know some people don't like being out in
the rain. It doesn't bother me, but it's forecast terrain.
Hopefully it will happen at night, yeah, and not during
the day. But don't let the deter you. Please come
out and support us. We have people to help you
carry your books out to the car. We have a
(15:58):
Boy Scout troop that's going to be alolunteering and helping
us this year, so we'll have people there to help
you get your books in the car and hold your
umbrella for you so you don't get wet if it's raining.

Ben Hooks Library thirty thirty Poplar and help us support
(16:18):
your Memphis City libraries.

Yes we will.
Speaker 2 (16:23):
Yeah, and again come out and it is something positive
to do. And you said you're going to have food
trucks out there. People can get a snack and continue
to shop and have a great time.
Speaker 3 (16:38):
It's a great time. That's a good cause because your
funds from these sales they help our robotics team at
Cloud nine oh one. We help with conferences like Leadership
Memphis so our staff can improve their skills. We have
(17:00):
creative writing classes, cooking classes, computer classes, art courses, the
summer reading programs. All that is funded by friends of
the library. Every year. We have a budget that specifically,
it's the fund each branch and the Bend Hooks Library
(17:21):
for all these programs. And all we ask is please
come out, buy the books, buy the merchandise, volunteer and
help us keep our libraries great.
Speaker 2 (17:36):
Yeah, and as you said earlier, because here in Memphis,
our library system has won.
Speaker 3 (17:44):
The National Merit Award not once, but twice, and we're
the only library system that has ever accomplished that wow
in this nation. So please help us make sure that
our library stay the standard of any library. Our staff
(18:09):
is so remarkable, the ideas and the innovative, creative programs
that they come up with, it just blows my mind sometimes.
And all we do is we say, how can we help?
What funding do you need to help execute your vision?
So if you have an opportunity, please come out this
(18:34):
Thursday from three to seven at the Ben Hooks Library.
If you're not a member on Thursday, I will personally
be there and I will sign you up. We have
other volunteers that will help you. Also Friday from ten
am to six pm. Come back if you came on Thursday,
