cloudy in Memphis, Tennessee. I hope it's nice where you are.
It's May twenty seventh, twenty twenty five. Enjoyed this fabulous
day to day as we continue to share the good news.
Use My guest this hour is Dylan Miller. She is

(01:05):
the Public Services Supervisor for the Memphis Public Library, and
to talk about Comic Con. And let me say welcome, Welcome, welcome, welcome,
welcome to miss Dylan Miller.

Speaker 2 (01:17):
How are you.

Speaker 4 (01:18):
I'm good, Thank you so much for having me.

Speaker 3 (01:20):
You are so welcome, so welcome and being with the
Memphis Public Library. You've been there a while, huh.

Speaker 4 (01:26):
Yes, I started in twenty seventeen.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
Wow, you've been working sistent. Yeah, you've been working working well.
Now you're here to talk about Dylan Comic Cohn What
is that?

Speaker 4 (01:38):
So it's our library's comic con event that is completely
free for entry to the public, meaning you don't have
to pay to get in, and a lot of the
event's offerings are completely free, such as Chris Parnell is
going to be our featured guest for the event. He's
an SNL alumni. He's a voice actor. He's done voice
acting for Rick and Morty and many many other shows.

(02:03):
He will be signing and taking pictures with comic Con
guest at ten am and again free of charge. Usually
at a standard con they would charge you, I want
to say, upwards of fifty dollars for wow picture a
signing from a celebrity. And then at eleven am we
have trivia, again free and you have the chance to

(02:24):
win a prize. We have a first, second, and third
prize that's for all ages. And then we have a
Pokemon theme story time at eleven am as well. And
then at twelve we have a Super Smash Bros. Gaming
tournament for teenagers and there's medals that the winners can
get to show off their win and there's a first

(02:45):
place prize.

Speaker 3 (02:47):
So let's go back because somebody's listening and say comic Con,
what really is that? Because some people don't know what
that is, right.

Speaker 4 (02:55):
So basically, it's an event that celebrates a lot of
different fans, specifically comics and graphic novels, but it can
go beyond that. I would like to say, nerddom Okay,
So if you're a big you know, Star Trek fan
or video game fan, there's going to be vendors selling

(03:16):
various artwork or crafts that they've made that could pertain
to that fantom that you're interested in.

Speaker 3 (03:23):
So, Dylan, again, this is happening when.

Speaker 4 (03:26):
May thirty first, which is this Saturday from ten am
to three pm at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library,
and we're going to have a cosplay contest. You could
dress up like your favorite character and have the chance
to win a prize.

Speaker 3 (03:39):
Wow, because I'm thinking that when you mentioned Star Trek,
I think I've seen this on TV where people come
out of the trickies and they've had so this is
kind of similar to that. But but it's dealing with
all characters and comic book characters. Is that what you're saying? Yes?

Speaker 4 (03:58):
Correct, Yeah, And we're even giving away comics and graphic
novels and manga at the event. So if you're interested
in anime, you know, you could read the manga that
inspired your favorite anime. So yeah, there's a little something
for everyone.

Speaker 3 (04:12):
You know. Now I'm gonna date myself now killan because
I was thinking a comic book and what was my
favorite comic book? You're gonna fall out. I'm wondering if
you all have some.

Speaker 4 (04:26):
Okay, Archie, Oh yeah, you know that came to my mind.

Speaker 3 (04:32):
I think I used to get that Archie in the
Betty and Ah.

Speaker 4 (04:35):
Yeah that's a comic.

Speaker 3 (04:36):
Yeah, that's a comic. Sure, that's old.

Speaker 4 (04:40):
It reminds me of talking with my dad about anime
and he's like, yeah, I liked anime. I like speed Racer.

Speaker 3 (04:44):
Right right right. So so, so Comic Con you will
have comic books, yes, corrected that people can purchase.

Speaker 4 (04:54):
So vendors will be selling comics.

Speaker 3 (04:57):
So vendors will be Okay, that does have a.

Speaker 4 (04:59):
Cost, but ten of those proceeds go into the Memphis
Library Foundation, which is funding the event. That's how the
event itself is free to the public. And yes, you
could purchase your own comics from them, but also thanks
to International paper we're giving away comics, graphic novels, and
manga to the first two hundred guests at the event.

Speaker 3 (05:17):
Oh wow, yeah, that's good.

Speaker 4 (05:19):
You could walk away with your own book that you
get to keep. You don't have to return it to
the library.

Speaker 3 (05:22):
Okay. And starting at ten o'clock on Saturday thirty first
until three pm. Correct, And people need to know again,
this is absolutely free. Is this Dylan? Is this family friendly?

Speaker 2 (05:37):
Yes?

Speaker 4 (05:37):
Yeah, like I said, there's something for all ages. Trivia,
the Pokemon storytime. If you have teens, bring them out,
they'll get in the Super Smash Bros. Gaming competition. We'll
have a Q and A with Chris which everybody can enjoy. Oh.
Good local Memphian, so that's pretty neat. You could learn
about his history here at Memphis. And yeah, there's also

(05:59):
going to be food trucks so you won't have to
leave the event. You can yeah, get food for your
family there.

Speaker 3 (06:04):
Okay, so this is good. You something for the family
can do. Absolutely free admission, but with other because you
said also that you will have vendors there and so
people can buy things. And oh, this is a good
opportunity for for families if their kids want to dress.

Speaker 4 (06:26):
Up yeah, exactly. Yeah, and at the end of the
cosplay contest, we give you know, smaller kids a chance
to go across the stage.

Speaker 3 (06:33):
Oh yeah, yeah. So all this is going to take
place inside the library is going to.

Speaker 4 (06:39):
Be out inside, correct. The food trucks will be outside.
We'll have a seating for that, but all the other
events inside.

Speaker 3 (06:46):
Okay, is this, Dylan, the first year you all have
done this.

Speaker 4 (06:51):
No, this is going to be our third year, and
it's become a mainstay at the library and it's just
getting bigger and bigger. Last year we had, I want
to say, at least five hundred people come out. Wow,
expecting it to.

Speaker 3 (07:02):
Be even bigger. Yeah, and again again you have a
very special guess that's coming in. And I was trying
to remember you said he's with it's been with SNL hmm.

Speaker 4 (07:16):
He did the he's in the Cowbell sketch. He's in
the Lazy Sunday sketch.

Speaker 3 (07:21):
Okay, yeah, okay, Because I love.

Speaker 4 (07:24):
It's so interesting. My coworkers have been. I'm investigating his
entire you know, career filmography. Yeah, he's the voice of
the Progressive Box as well, which is just interesting. And
the Hamburger helper mascot get.

Speaker 2 (07:36):
Out of that.

Speaker 4 (07:38):
It's fun.

Speaker 5 (07:39):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (07:39):
Yeah, yeah, not what he's known for at all, but hey, now.

Speaker 3 (07:42):
You know, and so so people who come, they will
be able to interact with him.

Speaker 4 (07:49):
Yeah, get to meet him and again.

Speaker 3 (07:52):
And I'm sure get autographs signed, take pictures.

Speaker 4 (07:56):
Yeah. And like I said, he's a voice actor on
the hit sci fi animated show Rick and Morty. The
new season is coming out really soon, so very very
time week.

Speaker 3 (08:06):
Yeah, okay, And I'm surprised that I didn't hear about
this last year. And you said, this is your third
year doing this, and so it's a big deal. It's
a big deal. And it's one of the things that
I like Dylan about the Memphis Public libraries because they
offer a variety of things for people to do and

(08:28):
that's free and family friendly. They can come out and
enjoy themselves. And this is what they can do on
Saturday of this week at Comic Con.

Speaker 4 (08:38):
Yeah, yeah, exactly. And there's even so much more. I'm
just now remembering too. We have an art contest, so
local Memphians have submitted their art. There's gonna be prizes
awarded to the winners of that art contest. It's up now,
so you can come and see it now. If you
don't have a chance to say, okay, okay, how long
would that art work stay up?

Speaker 3 (08:57):
Will be there for a while or just this weekend.

Speaker 4 (09:00):
I believe just this weekenda been up for the entirety
of May.

Speaker 3 (09:03):
Okay, but they'll be ordered.

Speaker 4 (09:06):
Gift cards from the Art Center. They donated those to
our event. And it's all superheroes and villains themed. So
there's like a lot to see, a lot to do.

Speaker 3 (09:16):
Yeah, yeah, And one of the things I'm really interested
in go back with the art things, since you mentioned that,
and if someone's listening, I know it's too late now,
but someone's listening who is an artist and would like
to show their wares maybe for get ready for I
don't know if you do that for every year, how
do they get in touch with you? How do they

(09:37):
do that?

Speaker 4 (09:38):
So this year we put a web page on the
web memphislibrary dot org specifically for Comic Con. So if
you're interested in participating in the cosplay contest and you're
certain of it now, you can register right now, as
well as for the gaming competition. You'll see it right
when you go there. Memphislibrary dot org and we intend
to do that again next year. Any years moving forward,

(09:58):
and if you're interested in being vendor in twenty twenty six,
there'll be a form to apply for that next year.
It's not live now, but keep your eye out.

Speaker 3 (10:06):
Yeah, so that people would. I'm glad you said that
because it's on there now, so you can start for
next year. Because you know, Dylan, we have a lot
of vendors down and this is an opportunity for them
to show their wares, but they have to do it
for next year.

Speaker 4 (10:24):
Right. We're at capacity now, there's going to be over
fifty vendors.

Speaker 3 (10:28):
What.

Speaker 4 (10:29):
Yeah, but the form for twenty twenty six isn't up yet, Okay, okay,
it won't be too long. And if anyone's interested, they
can also call the library and their information could be
passed along and we can put it away. We always
notify previous vendors that the form is up. There's no
guarantee you of acceptance because there's so many, but if
you pass your intro along, we can make sure you

(10:49):
at least get notified that it's okay.

Speaker 3 (10:52):
And that will be for vendors period or just for
the food truck vendors.

Speaker 4 (11:00):
It's really more so for tabling.

Speaker 3 (11:02):
But yeah, yeah, yeah yeah, reach out, reach out. Okay, okay,
that sounds good. That sounds good if you've just tuned
in this afternoon, we are talking with Miss Dylan Miller,
who is the Public Service supervisor for the Memphis Public Libraries.
She is talking about getting ready for this weekend comic Con.

(11:23):
Something that I think that you know, school is out
now and a lot of parents and parents and grandparents
want to have something to do positive for their children,
and this would be a great idea for sure.

Speaker 4 (11:39):
We have a craft every year where children can make
their own superhero costume. We have like masks and capes
and they can decorate them. Been great for you know,
grandma and their granddaughter grandson to come out.

Speaker 3 (11:49):
And do Okay, the story time sounds good. I am
going to go to our phone lines to talk with you.
Thank you for holding w D I a high caller.

Speaker 4 (12:01):
Yes, can you tell me the name of the automotive
specialists that you have on your show?

Speaker 3 (12:08):
Sometimes you are talking about Terry Spicer.

Speaker 4 (12:14):
Terry Speiser, Yes, and where is he at?

Speaker 3 (12:17):
He is at Sunrise Wolf Chase.

Speaker 4 (12:22):
Okay, Terry Spider thank you so much.

Speaker 3 (12:25):
Enjoy your show, Thank you so much. Bye bye. They
want to know about automotive story, that's okay. We give
out information you need to know they need. And one
thing about when you talk about a need to know,
I'm sure when people come out on Saturday, Dylan, that
they will learn some things they probably didn't know about

(12:48):
comics or or even the Memphis Public Library, right.

Speaker 4 (12:52):
I think that's something to take from this too, is
the library is doing so much more just beyond like
printing out books or giving space for computers. These have
been serve again very large scale, well put together, and
it's something that again your family can enjoy hypothetically at
free of cost if you're not purchasing from vendors or
the food trucks. So yeah, you know, there's a lot
to see at your local library and a lot of

(13:14):
community to get invested in.

Speaker 3 (13:16):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (13:16):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (13:17):
And one of the things about the library that is
there and it's full of information, and if you want
to know some information, that's the place to go, right Yeah.

Speaker 4 (13:28):
And again the main library open ten am to eight
pm Monday through Thursday, so to always there. Again, let's
say your computer is out at home, or you can
come to the library and will help you out, or
you are interested in a book. An average book can
cost like twenty upwards of twenty dollars, so you can

(13:48):
come to the library and we can get that for
you at we have over eighteen branches.

Speaker 3 (13:52):
So yeah, you know, talking about the library, and I
had not been to a library to purchase a book.
But let me ask you this. You can answer the question,
do you still need a library card? Do you still
have to have that to take out a book from
the library.

Speaker 4 (14:09):
Yes, yes, so you do. A Memphis resident, you can
get a library card free of charge. You just have
to show proof of address. That could be your driver's
license or ID as long as it has a Memphis
address on it. If you don't have that, you could
show two other forms of proof of address, such as
like a light bill, your lease.

Speaker 3 (14:27):
Yeah, oh good.

Speaker 4 (14:28):
And if you're not it's only fifty dollars. And again,
considering a book can cost twenty dollars. Yeah, that can
pay itself off really quick. And we have an entire
e collection you can utilize.

Speaker 3 (14:37):
So oh wow, wow, oh that's good. I was thinking
one of you still have to have a library card.

Speaker 4 (14:44):
I haven't it's easy to get one.

Speaker 3 (14:46):
It's easy to get one, and so you can take
a book. But if you don't have one, a library card, Dylan,
you still can come to the library and use the facility.
Like you said, if your computer is out or you
may not have a a computer that you can go
to the library and use.

Speaker 4 (15:04):
We do have resources for customers that don't have library
cards to use the computer. They're a little more limited,
but we do have those and anybody can come into
the library. We're not checking that at the door. And
anybody can come to our events and utilize our meeting
spaces without a library card. Oh whoa, Yeah, you sound
so excited about.

Speaker 3 (15:24):
Well, yeah, because I'm thinking that I forget that the
library is a good place for people that can have meetings, right,
and so all you would have to do is contact
the library and you know your organization wants to have
a meeting there is Is there a fee for that?

Speaker 4 (15:44):
It kind of depends. It depends on the scale of
how big your group is, okay, and what kind of
group they are, like as in like I think there's
differences for nonprofits. I'm not the authority on that.

Speaker 3 (15:53):
Yeah, okay, but it's good to know. Yeah, but always tall.

Speaker 4 (15:57):
Group, totally free and it's depends on like the available space.
But at the main library there's several different floors that
have small meeting rooms, so you can meet a group
of let's say, up to four or five to eight
free of charge. No library car unit.

Speaker 3 (16:11):
Okay, you mentioned the times, Dylan, Monday through Thursday. Is
the library open on the weekends Friday Saturday.

Speaker 4 (16:17):
Since Yeah, so Friday ten am to six pm, Saturday
ten am to six pm, Sunday one pm to five pm.
That's just for the main library that I'm speaking about.

Speaker 3 (16:27):
Yea, yeah, I'm Poplar. Yes, all right, if you've just
tuned in this afternoon, we are talking with miss Dylan Miller.
She is the Public Services supervisor for the Memphis Public Library.
We're talking about Comic Con. We're gonna take a break.
If you don't know what that is. Dylan's gonna tell
you how you can get involved and have some family

(16:50):
friendly fun. If you have a question or two for
her this day, nine zero one, five, three, five nine
three four to two eight hundred five zero three nine
three four two or eight three three five three five
nine three four two will get you in to us.

(17:11):
You're listening to Double d i A The Beth Jos Show.

Speaker 5 (17:38):
You're listening to the BEB Johnson Show. That's you Bev
on w d i A.

Speaker 3 (18:20):
You're listening to the Bev Johnson Show. Here's Bev Johnson.
And I'm talking with Dylan Miller, public service supervisor for
the Memphis Public Library, getting ready for this weekend comic Con.
And Dylan again, for our listeners who may be just
tuned in, tell them the time that you all are
starting on this Saturday, and again what can they expect?

Speaker 4 (18:45):
So from ten am to three pm at the Benjamin
Hooks Central Library, we're going to have our Comic Con
event and you can expect a celebration of all different
kinds of fandoms from comics to anime, video game culture,
except and we're gonna have our keynote guest, Chris Parnell,
who will be there to do signings, take pictures with you,

(19:07):
and he'll have a Q and A at one pm.

Speaker 3 (19:09):
And again, so our listeners will know this is absolutely free.

Speaker 4 (19:15):
Right, We're gonna have food truck selling food and vendors
selling their wares, which would be comics, any sort of knickknacks,
through selling and their art, but intry to the event.
Totally free. In all the activities that the library is planned,
completely free, such as story time for little kids, crafts, trivia, gaming, competition,

(19:36):
et cetera.

Speaker 3 (19:37):
And you mentioned some of the comics, are they from
local or across.

Speaker 4 (19:46):
The vendors? Mostly local? I mean they might be a
little bit passed out of Memphis, but yeah, mostly local.
And again we're giving away free comics, graphic novels, and
manga to a grant from international paper, so you can
get those for free for sure.

Speaker 3 (20:03):
So so coming out on Saturday, you may win something,
may get something, You.

Speaker 4 (20:09):
May win something away putting it.

Speaker 3 (20:10):
Yeah, yeah, you may win something.

Speaker 5 (20:12):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (20:12):
I like that, Dylan. You may win something. And again,
as we said earlier, this is family friendly. So this
is something for the whole family can do. Come out
and have a good time, and don't worry about eating.

Speaker 4 (20:25):
It's not free the water, so yes we do. We're
gonna have a little bit of something. But if you
want a meal, yeah, they have the vendors. The food
vendors will be there. And I think this is gonna
be fun.

Speaker 3 (20:40):
I do too, And I think and you said earlier
Dylan that you all are expecting a big crowd.

Speaker 4 (20:47):
Yes, yeah, last year we had five hundred maybe more people,
so yeah, we're gearing up for that amount.

Speaker 3 (20:56):
Good. Yeah, so hopefully I have and check the forecast.

Speaker 4 (21:01):
Oh gosh, yeah, that is god.

Speaker 3 (21:03):
It's don't worry about the rain. But I think it's
going to be a beautiful Saturday. The sun's out. But
as you said, you all are inside. It is not outside,
and it's free. Parking is free.

Speaker 4 (21:16):
Yes, yeah, it's just the library parking lot.

Speaker 2 (21:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (21:20):
Everything sounds that sounds good kind of con Yes, and
again your very special guest. If you all like me,
you watch SNL I do every week. I love that
you all have a special guest coming in.

Speaker 4 (21:35):
Yes, Chris Parnell from Memphis again, famed voice actor and
SNL alumni.

Speaker 3 (21:43):
Sounds good, sounds good. Anything else that we need to
tell our listeners, Dylan that we that we hit everything
or we forgot something.

Speaker 4 (21:52):
I think we hit everything. So yeah, come out. Gaming
competition cosplay contest. If you want to participate, you can
register on the library's website at this library dot.

Speaker 3 (22:01):
Org for for for to get in some of the contests.

Speaker 4 (22:04):
Yes, if you want to register in advance, yes, okay
you yeah.

Speaker 3 (22:08):
Well no, yeah, so so again. People can go on
the on on the website.

Speaker 4 (22:14):
And register for either of those competitions, the teen Gaming
competition which is Super Smash Bros. Or the Cosplay contest
in advance. There'll be a registration on the day of two.
If you want to square that away now you can.

Speaker 3 (22:25):
Okay, sounds good. Well, thank you so much as always, uh,
sharing the good news from the Memphis Public Library, because
we know that's a good thing and we like good
news and it's very special this weekend comic con. Yeah,
I wish you all the success.

Speaker 4 (22:43):
Thank you.

Speaker 3 (22:43):
I don't know, I may drive by there or check
out check out some of the food trucks. Huh yeah yeah,
and you're right, get a picture with him. Yeah, that
sounds like that. Sounds like that will work for me, Dylan,
Miss Tillan Miller, who is the Public Service Supervisor niphis
Pubflict Library, thank you for being here. Thank you and

(23:06):
and and and sharing the good news. Before I see
my my, before you get out of here, let me
get this this phone line. I see somebody calling w
D I a high caller. Hello, Yes, you're on the air.

Speaker 2 (23:24):
Okay, great, great, Hello to you. Yeah, yeah, I'm sorry.
I was trying to turn that app down. Boy, I'm
so old and they funny.

Speaker 3 (23:32):
You're right, you're right right, get it together.

Speaker 2 (23:34):
Brother, I don't need no help, you know, I don't
need no help. But anyway, hello to you again. Hi there, Yes, yeah, yeah,
great great. First of all, what is anime?

Speaker 4 (23:49):
So anime is Japanese animation and generally not all the time,
but it's usually at adaptations of manga. With your Japanese.

Speaker 2 (23:58):
Comics, Okay, I have seen that, I just didn't know
what it was called.

Speaker 4 (24:03):
Like Dragon Ball Z or One Piece. Those are anime shows.

Speaker 2 (24:11):
You're kind of a geek, aren't you.

Speaker 4 (24:16):
I do like it, I guess.

Speaker 2 (24:18):
So that's all right, that's all right. I like geeks
every night. Is somebody's crazy enough to call me one?
And no, I'm not a geek. I know geeks. I'm
just not as deep as they are. But anyway, so
here's my question, Oh Bell, I don't know if you
I don't know if you know this or not. But Angelo,
one of your callers, was trying to start a black

(24:38):
comic book. Yes I know, yes, yeah, yeah, yeah, I
don't know how he's doing he had and called in
a long time, but I think something his work is
really really beautiful and interesting. Now here's my question. My
favorite is Snoopy, not not Snoopy's dog or whatever he was,
Snoop doggie dog or what I'm talking about, the real

(25:00):
Snoop and Pete Panther. I don't know. I don't think
Pete Panther started as a as a comic. I think
it probably started as a cartoon. But but my question,
my question is this, Uh, what is the difference between say,
Snoopy in a in a in a weekly comics and

(25:21):
and what you're putting on is that is that? Does
it have to be in a comic book? Is that? What? What?

Speaker 4 (25:25):
What? What?

Speaker 2 (25:25):
What we're talking.

Speaker 4 (25:26):
About so our comic Con it goes beyond just comics.
I mean, like I was saying, there's kind of something
for everyone. So again, if you're a fan of anime
or video games, there's something at the comic Con event
for you. Peanuts is a newspaper comic strip, but you
can usually get those, you know, compilation books of that,

(25:48):
which you can check out at the library. I don't
think we'd be giving anyway any Snoopy books, but you
could definitely check something out from the library.

Speaker 2 (25:57):
Yeah, no, I just I've never really I think the
last comic I really got into Bell was Batman and Superman.
That's a long time ago. Yeah, as well, but I
enjoyed it. For some reason, I moved on. But yeah,
that's interesting. The library is already always to thank you
Bell for having the folks on from the library, because,
as I told you, that's my favorite place in the city,

(26:19):
to be honest with you. Yeah, and I need to
start going back. I stopped going because of COVID, you know. Yeah,
and I need to start back to visiting as well. Anyway,
But thank you, Yeah, thank you for your time and
the information. I appreciate that. Now I know what the
anime is. Oh, I know what to call it when
I see.

Speaker 2 (26:40):
Okay, thank you, Thank you, David.

Speaker 3 (26:42):
Yeah, that was a good question. Yeah, for people who
know and and and again before we get out here,
one of the things that David said, and I know,
I know, Dylan, a lot of people did stop coming
to the library because of COVID, But right now you
people are welcome again. You're open back up. Yes, and
so people can come the Yeah.

Speaker 4 (27:00):
Yeah, we had a very brief closure during the pandemic,
but we did open back up and though our services
were kind of limited in how close we could get
to people and help them hands on, all that is,
you know, back to normal now, and our attendance at
the main Library is picking back up to where it
was pre pandemic. So yeah, good you come on out.

(27:21):
Like I said, there's so much. There's tons of events
constantly happening, Yeah, to build community and bring people together again.
They're free. The events are free, and you can learn
so much of those events and meet new people, and
you can utilize all the resources that the library has,
our collection of books, our e collection, and our computers,
et cetera.

Speaker 3 (27:40):
Yeah, and a lot of history there too of that
library too, because I know you all have the different
rooms you can come in and learn about the Memphis.

Speaker 4 (27:49):
Yeah, the Memphis room that's on the fourth floor at
the main Library, and that's the Memphis Archive. So wander
up there and ask them to show you some stuff.

Speaker 3 (27:57):
It's neat sounds good again, Dylan Millard, thank you for
being here and sharing the good news and coming con
and I know it's going to be a huge success
on Saturday May thirty first, that time.
