Speaker 4 (02:52):
I'm, Great. Bev it's always a thrill to be back
in the studio with. You good good saying you what
you been? Doing, YES i am still, work still live In.
La it's going on twelve years of me being a
producing and developed some GROUNDBREAKING tv. Shows So i've been
doing a lot of traveling back and forth developing quality
programming to amplify the voices of black men In. MEMPHIS

(03:14):
i love.

Speaker 1 (03:14):
It are you still still putting on The Black Men?

Speaker 4 (03:17):
Crown, yes we. Are we took a break last year
because we were celebrating Our emmy, nomination which we will talk. About,
yes we'll talk about in the. Show but we took
a break last year last, year but we are going
to bring it back this year to celebrate our brothers out.

Speaker 1 (03:31):
Here oh, wow, wow. Good AND i don't know WHY
i thought you.

Speaker 5 (03:35):
Had it last year justin ye break going so fast.

Speaker 4 (03:40):
Exactly you, know and we're growing tremendously and drastically extremely
fast every. Year so we want to take that beat
to celebrate That emmy, nomination which was also groundbreaking for the.
Nonprofit and our goal is to bring it back this
year bigger and better than.

Speaker 1 (03:54):
EVER i want to go.

Speaker 5 (03:55):
Back and You're, memphian, yes but you live In la
now and you've been working in. Television tell our listeners
what you've been doing or what you?

Speaker 4 (04:05):
Do, Yes, La, yeah, Definitely So i've been In la
for going on twelve years, Now and ACTUALLY i lived
In New york a year BEFORE i moved to la
in twenty, thirteen BUT i worked on various talk. Shows
SO i started off working on a court show Called
Lauren Lake's Paternity, court and from, THERE i moved on
to work on The Emmy award winning show Called The,
real which was a daytime talk show that aired On,

(04:26):
fox AND i worked on that particular show for three,
seasons and THEN i moved on to produce on a
show Called Eyella Fixed My life On Oprah winfrey's, network
AND i received AN Naacp Image award for a few
of the episodes THAT i produced on that. Platform and
then from, THERE i went to work ON E, news
WHERE i was a segment producer for their morning, show
AND i ended up going to a network Called Fox

(04:47):
Entertainment Fox, soul AND i developed a lot of programming
on that, platform ranging former show Called cocktails With queens
With vivaca A, Fox Selina johnson And Lisa ray, McCoy Claudia,
jordan and the entertainment talk show CALLED. Tgif AND i
was with that platform for six. Years so Now i'm
like launching my production Company we're doing a lot of
independent projects In Los angeles and also in the city

(05:10):
Of memphis as, Well so just creating content to be
able to really enhance our voices and tell our stories
the right.

Speaker 1 (05:16):
WAY i like.

Speaker 5 (05:16):
THIS i like what you're doing justin and you Know
i've said, it and you're.

Speaker 1 (05:22):
Doing it well and you're doing something.

Speaker 5 (05:24):
POSITIVE i know now you keep mentioning, That, emmy so
talk to me about.

Speaker 4 (05:31):
That, Yes, so in partnership with W k AND, O
i developed a series Called. Fatherhood you, Know i'm always
trying to find innovative ways to be able to amplify
the voices of black men in the city Of memphis
and also. Nationwide so we developed a series Called fatherhood
that pretty much features black fathers in the city Of,
memphis discussing the, trials the, triumphs the, tribulations the, obstacles

(05:54):
the challenges of being a father in today's. Climate and
the premise of it is to write our own narrative
and allow the media to depict this narrative who they
think black men are and who they think black fathers.
Are and that was the premise behind the launch Of.
Fatherhood so last year it started off as A Fatherhood.
Special so it was a one off special that we
did WITH wk AND o and it was well received

(06:15):
from the community and we submitted it for An emmy
nomination for The Mid South Nashville emmys and we actually got. Nominated.
Wow so we decided to turn that special into a,
series and W k AND now picked up six. Episodes.

Speaker 1 (06:28):
Wow now that's.

Speaker 5 (06:30):
Fabulous, yes and you know W k AND, o y'all
in our own hometown back in the, day we Caught channel.

Speaker 1 (06:37):
Ten, oh that is.

Speaker 5 (06:41):
Wonderful so This fatherhood, series it's gonna be. Unconned so
you're gonna be talking mainly justin about fathers here In.

Speaker 4 (06:52):
Memphis, yes so we have it's a it's a talk show.
Series it's going to feature different fathers on every, episode
and every episode is unpacking a different. Topic for, example
the premiere episode airs tomorrow and that topic that conversation
will be about fathers who are primary, caregivers those who
are taking care of either a sick loved one or

(07:13):
they have soul custody of their. Kids and then something
that we rarely hear from is black fathers who are
primary caregivers for their family. Members so we're going to
be able to hear their stories. Tomorrow and also another
episode that we, film WHICH i have the host Nay
ali next to, me is about fathers who are incarcerated
for a portion of their child's life and how that

(07:34):
affected their parenting and giving them the platform to talk,
about you, know the challenges of rebuilding that relationship now
that they are. Reformed so another episode is featuring some
leaders in the city Of memphis who are in. Education
they also have organizations devoted to. Youth we did an
episode earlier this week Call beyond The, bill which talks

(07:54):
about the importance of building community around our young people
outside of the. School so variety of topics that we're
gonna unpack to really showcase these stories of these black
fathers that are doing some groundbreaking work here in the
city Of.

Speaker 1 (08:07):
Memphis and it's just called.

Speaker 4 (08:10):
Fatherhood this it's called. Fatherhood, YES i like. THAT i
like that uplifting. Voices yeah, yeah, YEAH i take.

Of Black Men.

Speaker 1 (10:04):

also catch it on the website wk AND o dot
org or THE pbs. App and we're also gonna drop
it on YouTube and social.

Speaker 5 (10:29):
Media, RIGHT i want you to Introduce Nate ali and tell.

Speaker 1 (10:34):
Us who he is.

Speaker 4 (10:35):
Exactly, So Nate ali is a great friend of mine
since high school and he's also one of our hosts For,
Fatherhood Uplifting, Voices Rendefining. Legacy, yeah so, Yeah.

Speaker 8 (10:45):
Nate welcome, In, Nate thank, you thank, you good. Afternoon
it's a pleasure to be, Here. Beverley thank you so
much for having, me and thank you justin for inviting.

Speaker 1 (10:52):
Me you are quite welcome and being a.

Speaker 5 (10:55):
Host so what have you learned with these men natas
the host and asking them questions about?

Speaker 1 (11:02):
Fatherhood, yeah great.

Speaker 2 (11:04):
Questions SO i am a father, Myself.

Speaker 8 (11:07):
Beverly i've got two, beautiful, young vibrant, daughters six and,
two and so WHILE i have my own experiences as a,
father it's been just a joy hearing these different perspectives
from these other men from different walks of. Life and
the thing about it is. Fatherhood black fatherhood, specifically is

(11:28):
such a complex. Phenomenon, Right there's so many, layers so many,
variables so many roles and responsibilities that we take on as.

Speaker 2 (11:37):
Fathers and if you're going to tell the.

Speaker 8 (11:39):
Story about black fatherhood the right, way then you have
to do it from as wide of a lens as,
possible AND i think that you accomplished that by How
we're doing it right by providing a platform for many
fathers from various, backgrounds various, upbringings areas of expertise to

(12:00):
share their, insights their, values their experiences so that the
picture is more. Complete, because As justin alluded, to there
are many misconceptions about black. Fatherhood so we want to
debok that and do black fatherhood the justice that it
deserves and give black fathers the flowers that they. Deserve

(12:20):
so for, me it is an educational tool for the,
community but it's also a celebration of black fathers at
the same.

Speaker 5 (12:28):
Time did you find and either one can answer this
question when you were doing this and, taping did you
have any resistance from any of the fathers that. NOT
i don't want to talk about. MYSELF i don't want
to be a part of. THIS i don't want people
to know my, story.

Speaker 4 (12:45):
Not at, ALL i, Think and, honestly when we were
doing the scouting and reaching out to the fathers during pre,
interviews we realized just the importance of how much they
needed to space themselves to be able to tell these
stories because a lot of black fathers and just men
in general do not have that safe space to be
able to open up, about you, know their concerns because
they've always been taught to keep it under the rug

(13:08):
or to mask it to make it seem, like you,
know everything is. Great and so we realized that this
conversation is needed now more than ever because it's providing
them with that space to be able to share their,
stories to open up in ways you know that they
probably would never even envision or imagine because no one
is ever asking black, men hey are you? Okay or

(13:29):
asking a father are you? Okay and the fathers most
times are not even asking, themselves AM i? Okay because
you have to wake up and go and do the
work and perform and you, know and this was a
space for them to kind of decompress and to really
break it. Down and it was great, that you, know
our panelists were able to do it amongst each.

Speaker 5 (13:48):
Other so in the, Series justin And nate that is
there variety of ages or you you're looking at young
black men or what's the age group in?

Speaker 8 (14:05):
There, Yeah so we again we wanted to definitely kind
of be very broad and and, uh span different age,
groups generations and backgrounds as. Well so we've got a
session or an episode coming up with teenage. Fathers, yeah
and we've had we've had fathers of all. Ages, okay

(14:26):
answer your. Question and we think that's. Important we think
that's important because every age group has a, story has
a has an, experience and it's important for the people
to hear. That and because you never, know you, know
maybe all it takes is one message to resonate with.
Somebody and so we definitely didn't want to have a you,

(14:49):
know pigeonholed ourselves to to fathers of a certain age.
Group we wanted to be able to to kind of
span the. Gamut then in that, sense.

Speaker 5 (14:57):
DID i don't, know have you justin have you finished
all the series or you're still will be.

Speaker 4 (15:04):
Filming, yeah we still have two more episodes that we're
gonna take to take next. Month and just to kind
of piggyback On nate just said about that episode featuring
that's going to feature teen fathers that we're gonna develop
NEXT i think it's extremely important to create space for,
them especially the teen fathers that need resources and need
guidance because we want to be able to partner them
with other fathers that start, off you, know as a

(15:27):
teenage themselves having. Kids you, know we think it's important
for them to tell their stories because we always hear
about teen. Moms, yeah you really don't get a chance
to hear from young people that are. Fathers and it's
not about exposing. Them it's about creating a space for
them to receive the resources they deserve and to encourage,
them to motivate. Them and you, know we always like
to leave with our. Organizations you can't aspire to be

(15:48):
something you don't. See so if these teen fathers don't
see other older fathers that started, off you, know becoming
fathers at their, age they're not going to know what
proper steps to take just so they can be successful or,
healthy you, know although they're young and you, know just
responsible fathers at that particular. Age so we are excited about.
That LIKE i, said we want to you, know be

(16:09):
able to broaden the horizons on telling these, stories and
so we're looking at all ages you know that would
be interested in just kind of sharing their.

Speaker 5 (16:17):
Perspective oh, good, now you said. Tomorrow the first episode
is on.

Speaker 1 (16:24):
Single.

Speaker 4 (16:24):
Fathers so, no the tomorrow's, episode the premiere episodes devoted
to pri fathers who are primary. Caregivers oh, okay so
those that have either soul custody of their kids or
primary caregivers of a loved one that is. Disabled so
To oh my, god the stories are just compelling AND
i cannot wait for everyone to hear their perspectives on

(16:45):
being primary. Caregivers.

Speaker 5 (16:46):
Yeah i'm interested to know that in the, episodes or
of some of the episodes that you all have, filmed
did you ever think about asking the question of.

Speaker 1 (16:59):
The these men that.

Speaker 5 (17:04):
Did you ever consider not being a father or you
didn't want to be a father but now you love.
IT i don't know if that came up BECAUSE i
was thinking because some, people you, KNOW i don't want
to be a, father but then they are father and
then what.

Speaker 8 (17:16):
Happens, yeah so that specific question did not come, up
but that is uncovered through a lot of these.

Speaker 2 (17:22):
Conversations.

Speaker 8 (17:23):
Okay you, know as you, mentioned sometimes it sneaks up on, us, right, yeah,
yeah don't we don't intend to be fathers when we become,
fathers but it's really about stepping up and answering the
call you, know once their phone, rings so to.

Speaker 2 (17:38):
Speak and so those that, does.

Speaker 8 (17:42):
We do uncover that throughout our conversations quite a few, times.

Speaker 4 (17:46):
And just to quickly touch on, that you, KNOW i
think what's so what makes this series so groundbreaking is
the fact that you have fathers that have to create
their own ideology of what fatherhood means because they did
not have a father present in their lives growing, up
or maybe they had a strained relationship with their. Father
so it's also great to, hear you, know these fathers
open up about the challenges of trying to love their,

(18:09):
kids especially those that have soul custody of their, kids
which is another rare thing that you hear about is
black men that are actually stepping up and being the
sole provider for their. Kids, so you, know the fact
that they have to create what fatherhood looks like for
them just over time when they became fathers is something
that's going to be really groundbreaking to. Here and so six, episodes,

(18:34):
yeah six six episodes, tomorrow.

Speaker 5 (18:36):
Y'all now look, here look, here my, listeners THAT i
want you to support this young man because he's A,
Menphian he's A, memphian and this is something AND i
love this justin because this is a positive. Thing and
as you said, earlier we hear so much neatee about
black men and the, negativity the, negative the, negative the.

(18:58):
Negative but this is something positive AND i think we
could we could draw strength.

Speaker 4 (19:03):
From, definitely And belle if you don't if you don't,
MIND i just want to give a, special special shout
out to my team because as you, know working in
television and working in radio and, entertainment it takes a.
Village yes it. DOES i cannot thank my co executive
Producer Bard cole enough in THE wk AND o team
for seeing fit in this, project for providing us with
this platform to be able to tell these, stories no politics,

(19:26):
involved just strictly giving space for black men to come,
together a safe space to have a conversation with. SUBSTANCE
i cannot Think Bart cole and wkno. Enough, ALSO i
want to give a shout out to my, producers To Lauren,
keys To Jessica, boystone To Shane, barnes to my consulting
producers and Mi emmy nominated former Hosts Michael, Lowry chima And,

(19:50):
Wooka Brandon, Hughes Michael, campbell And Desmond Jackson jackson for
just their guidance throughout this whole. Process it takes a,
village and all of these people are based In memphis
or either their From. Memphis so the fact that we're
all coming together as a group to create something, IMPACTFUL
i gotta give things to them, because LIKE i, said
it's so many moving parts to developing. Shows and, also

(20:11):
LIKE i said to my, moderator to my Hosts Nay
ali And Chimon, Wuka i'm just grateful that they said
yes to the, call because this is what's going to
Elevate memphis on a national level in a positive. Way
and LIKE i, said we're taking control of our narrative
and starts with father sounds.

Speaker 5 (20:26):
Good let me go to our phone. Line W U
D I A hi. Caller hey coming, Man i'm doing
well in. Yourself i'm doing.

Speaker 9 (20:37):
Fine hello to, you Guess, Hello, Hello, hello all, right all,
Right i'll listen to. You AND i was prompted at
the call listen to conversation about about single dads and
being the sober battle or, Whatnot and of course he
knowed THAT i was a single father at the age
of twenty one due to an automobile asked and we

(21:01):
lost my son's. Mother BUT i WISH i would have
known of you all before now BECAUSE i would have
loved to have had a chance to tell my. Story
but WHAT i. Do the question you you spoke about
a little while earlier was does anybody that ever asked
are you? Okay AND i can say to you THAT

(21:21):
i tried to do the BEST i could do and
be as strong AS i. Could but it definitely was
an emotional roller coaster and still is because we still
have to live with it even to this. Day and,
uh this has been for a long. Time you, know
my son is thirty five and we lost his mom
and he was that he was, One so this has

(21:42):
been you, know it's something that you have to deal
with for the duration of your. Life but WHAT i
try to do with my situation is try to inspire
other men that you can do and you can be
a strong, man you can be a good, dad excuse
me in a strong. Dad you, know things happen, sometimes
but that's WHAT i try to do with my. SITUATION

(22:03):
i try to inspire other guys to know that you
can do. It you can't be a good dad and
you know things like.

Speaker 1 (22:09):
That, Okay, yeah, yeah AND i. DON'T i don't.

Speaker 5 (22:14):
KNOW i was gonna ask, comment, MAN i don't, know as,
JUSTIN i don't know if you're still looking for, Participants
SO i don't.

Speaker 4 (22:20):
Know, definitely we're we're always. Open we're gonna manifest this
that we're gonna get picked up for a season. Two
but if you are, interested if you're a father out,
THERE i think this is a beautiful story that needs
to be told BECAUSE i think people need to know
that it's okay not to be okay to just be
not to live in, it to to fill it and

(22:41):
to let go and to grow from, it you. Know
but if you're, INTERESTED i would love for you guys

Speaker 4 (24:25):
Yeah yeah for, Sure. David, so, yeah the Show, fatherhood
it's about just amplifying the voices of black fathers and
then city Of. Memphis you, know we're covering a variety of,
topics just discussing the, trials the, triumphs the, joys you,
know of just being a, father of. Existing and it's
pretty much set up as a safe space for fathers
from all over to come together to really open up

(24:46):
about their experiences and hopes of paving the way for
the next generation of fathers to follow suit and to
hopefully see themselves in you, know their. Stories, yeah you,
know it's.

Speaker 3 (24:58):
INTERESTING i never forget their. Images they go out through
your life and they just kind of like. Damned and
one of the images is WHEN i was coming home
on the bus and there was a young, brother you,
know we called him Young blood back in the, day
and he had a. Child he was taking his child
too and from, school And i've never forgotten that image

(25:18):
of how much love he showed his baby and taking.
Care AND i know that women say what we do
that all the. TIME i get, that but it was
just something that's great to see Because i've never known
my father at. All so Justint North memphis Of South.
Memphis which part of town are you.

Speaker 4 (25:37):
From i'm From South, Memphis Why.

Speaker 3 (25:39):
Haven, Okay, well we're not going to hold that Against
we're still gonna be proud of And.

hello to the brother. Too that's part of. This And
i've enjoyed both of your say and thank, you thank
you for, this because, man we need to get these positive,

(26:37):
images you, know because we're bombarded every day with negative.
Stuff in, FACT i just encouraged the new building is
who was, younger had a terrible wreck bell but he's
back and when he's young and he's doing the, thing
AND i, said, Man i'm so glad you know that

the financiers about an. Idea all of them except one

going to try to help those brothers who may have
been at one time but return citizens three pharmaceutical business
or whatever whatever crime they committed and their past, life

(27:21):
and hopefully helping to finance them if they have a
little change, too or they can get it to help
to renovate homes and fix and tip them or long term.
RENALS i think That bell and, brothers the high employment
rate we have in our, communities it just leads to
a whole lot of things that we you know that

(27:42):
it's very very difficult to. Overcome it's not, impossible but
it's very very difficult to. Overcome and we have to
see black men, working not just black men driving, BMW's but.
Working my Granddaddy, bell he used to take me places
and here showed me and you SAY i did the

(28:02):
brickwork on. THAT i helped do the brickwork on that.
Building you see What i'm. Saying and, young our young
bloods need to see more on. That and a lot
of TIMES i would implore them just to do their do.
Work they're do yard work and all of, that but
they don't have the consistency of seeing us supporting them

(28:23):
