Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good morning, Thank you for listening to Community Access. My
name is Alison de Merz. My guest today is Nicky Malloyd.
She is CEO of Plymouth Glass and Mirror. Good morning,
Good morning. So you have a wonderful event that's coming
up on June twenty first, tell me all about it.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Yeah, So this is something that's near and dear to
our hearts. We are having an event We're sponsored with
Dog Star Rescue. It's kind of a community event, trying
to get some more people involved, trying to get folks
involved to adopt dogs. So from twelve to two that day,
they'll bringing dogs down to possibly adopt of all ages.
But it's also supporting our veterans in their service dogs.
(00:39):
So the program that we do, where we did previously
we sponsored a service dog for a veteran. This year
we've decided to sponsor one year a veterinary care for
ten service dogs.
Speaker 1 (00:51):
Tell me why is it so important for Plymouth Glass
and Mirror to be involved in the community this way.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
We try and work with different organizations for multiple different reasons.
We do have some vets in our family, people that
work for us, and we try and find events that
aren't you know out there as much and people aren't
aware of So this was something that we came into,
like I said, about a year ago, and we weren't
aware of any other events taking place with it, so
we decided to jump on it. It's been awesome. It's
(01:19):
had a great turnout. Just seeing the faces on you know,
these different vets that we've met and being able to
hand them this dog over was a really touching experience
and it's something that we want to build upon and
be able to do every year.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
Wow, that is just amazing. And as you said, you're
going to cover the vet care for ten veteran service
dogs for a year.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
That is correct, yep, ten dogs, you know, full veterinary care. Again,
it's something that we are animal lovers here our own
so we've adopted dogs here personally me as well as
family friends here. So it's something that we're really excited about.
Staff is even excited. They're all called their wives and
husbands saying, you know, make sure we're here for this
(02:03):
day because we might be coming home with another you know,
for a.
Speaker 1 (02:06):
Pet I love that, give them a forever home. Tell
me how do the service dogs assist the veterans?
Speaker 2 (02:13):
So with veterans, they require somebody that can help them
with mobility, They can be emotionally regulated just independence, they
provide companionship, and so that's why it's something that I
feel like is something we forget, that whole mental health
piece and the emotional piece of it we forget. You know,
it's not always just the medical because we see somebody
(02:35):
in a wheelchair, because we see somebody that can't walk,
There's a whole other gamut to it. So I really
feel like this is something that can really change somebody's
life around. The impact is huge. We recently lost our
dog after thirteen years. He would have been thirteen actually
in Foort eight, and we lost them about a month ago,
and that was probably one of the hardest experiences I've
(02:55):
ever gone through. So when this came about, actually it
was really touching experience for me because it was like, Okay,
am I going to be able to handle this or
is this going to be emotional for me? And it
really brought tears to my eyes because I'm excited to
be a part of this event that is so giving
and to see these dogs go home, I think it
(03:18):
makes me happy knowing that they will have a good home.
And that somebody else will have that companionship and that
nurturing that they need.
Speaker 1 (03:25):
Absolutely, I'm so sorry for you loss. I lost my
fifteen year old little Maltese Jorky over the winter. I
actually had a hospice that come to the home, and
it didn't make it any easier. The thought of paying
it forward like this, You've inspired me. That's a wonderful
idea to do.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
Thank you, Thank you.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
How can the public help? Can we donate, volunteer, sponsor?
Speaker 2 (03:50):
There's a ton they can do. They can, of course
always donate at their website it's Dogstar Rescue dot org.
They can donate directly there. Donations we're willing to take
as well we will pass on to them. Fostering a
dog is huge. They always need fosters. Even if you
can't take a dog to adopt, they'll take foster homes
(04:11):
as well, you know, just to get them through because
the expense of a dog alone sometimes is a lot,
you know, and they also need that companionship. So having
you know, ten twenty dogs all in the same place,
sometimes it's nice to have one, two or three go
to a home for a little bit until they can
find them. That forever home. Volunteering is also another avenue
that you can take, whether that's coming in and walking dogs,
(04:32):
feeding them, playing with them again to get them that
exercise they need. All those are ways to help.
Speaker 1 (04:38):
Being from the Thomaston area, we've always used Plymouth Glass.
How many years have you been in existence now?
Speaker 2 (04:45):
Well, thank you for your support. We always want to
thank you for that. Initially, we've been around for forty
four years, so started in eighty one. Family owned. My
father started at day one, started out of a very
small garage and and his brother. About almost four years
ago now, my dad decided he was ready to retire.
He said, eh, you know, I'm ready. I'm ready for
(05:06):
I never thought that day would come. And I had
been involved in this since I was a kid. I
was twelve when I started working here answering phones. At
that point, I had been running the company for him
solely for about the past ten years. And I said okay,
and we never looked back, and it's never been a
day different than before he was here versus now.
Speaker 1 (05:24):
Well, it is a wonderful business. I love going there.
Everybody's so nice. It really is a beautiful family business.
And I hope that everyone takes a page out of
your book and also continues to serve the community the
way that you are.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
Thank you, I appreciate that, Alison. I just wanted to
share with everybody too, to keep an eye out for
our Glass for Good campaign. It's something we've been running
for about the past six months I have to do
with our community outreach in the Connecticut based charities here,
So keep an eye out for our next event. We
also like to encourage the community. If there's anything near
and dear to your heart that you'd like us to
(05:58):
get involved with, please don't hesitate to let us know
we're happy to look into it.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
I'm speaking with Nicky Malloyd. She is CEO of Plymouth
Glass and Mirror. The event is on June twenty first
at Plymouth Glass and Mirror from twelve to two in Thomaston.
Thank you so much for being here today, Nicki, and
for serving the community.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
Thank you, Allison. I look forward to seeing you hopefully
at the event.
