(00:00):
Welcome to the Between two Shows podcastswith Dave and Jen and Phil. So
we decided to do the between twoShows podcasts because well, we're on in
the mornings, yeah, Key onehundred. Dave and Gen here on Key
one hundred in the morning, sixto ten Monday through Friday. Then you
can flip over and catch us onone O three point three TC Our Country
(00:20):
in the afternoons that's right, threeto seven pm Monday through Friday. And
also we're odd because we're competing, that's right, seven in the afternoon.
We have like the ninety seven competitorright here in studio with us, Jason
Bill y'all. Yeah, so we'recompeting, but we're not competing right.
Well, listen, we are afamily. We are family, that's right.
(00:40):
That's right. And there's only threeof us left, so you know
you got us. We're together, that's right. So you guys have been
doing this for how long we've beenon Radio Business morning show? Well,
we've been on our morning show togetherfor eleven years. But Dave, you've
been here since ninety nine, ninetynine, have been on Key one hundred
ninety nine, isn't that crazy?Yeah? How long have you been.
I've been in this building for thirtyone years, going on thirty two.
(01:03):
Now, oh yeah, that's butwe have some interesting conversations between our shows.
Yeah, we decided to pay putit on a podcast. On a
podcast. The best conversations we haveare between the shows because I'm not on
your show, right either one ofthem. Well, you're not on my
(01:23):
shows, so we have to haveconversations between the shows. And that's where
this came, and that's where thiswas born. Look at that. All
topics we really really off limits.Nothing is. So if you want to
hear us talk about them, letus know. But Jen, you have
a topic for today, what's yourI can't believe I survived that story.
(01:48):
So Dave and I briefly spoke aboutthis off air, and I have several
I mean, there was several stupidthings that I did really that hard to
believe. I mean, I meanI was in serious situations that I didn't
know were serious at the time, but really bad ideas. Okay, So
(02:08):
there was multiple times that I mean, I'm shocked that I made it to
this age. Okay, the days, Yeah, I can't think of one,
not one thing, one thing overthe years over my lifetime Buddy in
which I was in a situation whereI thought I probably shouldn't have survived that.
Now I could reference several stories aboutmy children that they probably shouldn't have
(02:36):
survived. God, and obviously thatspeaks to my parents. But I mean,
I even have an example of mywife Tracy, where she probably have
survived the Zipline accident. Right shebroke her neck. Yeah, that's a
big one. But you've got nothing. You got nothing. You can't think
(02:57):
of a single nod one thing yet, are you, bubble boy? I
do listen. I did lead avery sheltered childhood. Okay, I'm not
gonna lie, and we can getinto that in another episode. I mean,
dude, even when I was akid, I got hit by a
car I don't know while she wason skates. No, I was on
(03:19):
roller blades and I was got aroller blade away from it too, because
I didn't even know I was hurt. But I broke their headlight with my
knee and then I was bleeding. So what about your Do you remember the
the w S a Z reporter thatgot hit by a car on air a
couple of years ago. Older plowedand then she got up to go.
No, I'm okay. She's like, I'm okay. Oh my gosh,
(03:39):
she was, I mean, awesome, that's a trooper, right, yea.
And she got up and she continuedthe story that han't happened, like
nothing, no, man, Ohyou're good, You're good. I'm fine.
Let's let's roll with this. Herewe go, awesome, hired anywhere?
Yeah, what is your I can'tbelieve. Here's here's one thing.
So, back in nineteen ninety three, we had the blizzard. I don't
(04:00):
know if you guys were even born. I remember it. I was in
high school and it was the bestthing ever. We were out like for
three weeks forever. Oh yeah,I remember that. I was in elementary
at the time, so yeah,we were out of school. So I
was in Johnson City, Tennessee whenthe blizzard hit. I was working for
the campus radio station at Marshall andwe were covering a college basketball tournament down
(04:23):
there, and we were calling agame and we looked out the window or
the door and we saw a littlesnow falling. It's like, oh,
that's pretty cool. We're getting somesnow. And then the next thing you
know, we wake up the nextmorning and there's eighteen inches of snow,
and we're stuck in this hotel inJohnson City, Tennessee, that ran out
of food. You know, weonly packed a certain number of days for
clothing. There's a mall right acrossfrom the hotel, but it was closed,
(04:46):
so there was nothing. The onlysaving grace was that there was a
Star Wars marathon on USA on theTV, so we could watch that.
But oh so, I mean atthis point, you know, it's three
days later and we're getting stir crazy, and it's like, we got to
get back to West Virginia. Wehave. So I'm there with two other
students and our faculty advisor. Right, so we're calling all the Department of
Highways in Tennessee, Virginia, WestVirginia, and we hear one that says
(05:10):
it's okay, it's good. Onehas a little ice. But remember we
have to go back across Walker Mountains, Virginia. Right, So we just
decided, let's let's do it.Let's go for it. We're out of
here. We plow ahead and weget into Virginia right around Withville and there's
a backup of like four miles oftraffic. Okay, oh wow, But
We finally get through that, andit's dark at this point, and we're
going over Walker Mountain and we're inone of those fifteen passenger vans from the
(05:31):
university. Right, I'm in thefront seat and I don't think the seat
belt's working, so I got myfeet on the dashboard. So we're going
down the mountain and it's covered insnow, and at this point I'm just
scared too dead And one of theguys in the back he was kind of
looking out the window and said, dude, what are you doing. He's
like, I'm just looking at thestars. I'm like, okay, well,
good for you. So as wego down this mountain, the faculty
(05:56):
advisory was driving taps the brakes justa bit just to see what was going
on on the back end of thevan. Starts with fish tailing, so
he says, and I'm quoting here, he just goes, well, it's
out of my hands now, yes, exactly. He just take the wheel.
So we're careening down this mountain, right. He can't hit the bricks,
and we're weaving in out of ourcars like a NASCAR race. And
(06:20):
I mean, like I said,my feed are on the dashboard. We're
all just white knuckling this thing andjust praying to the Good Lord that we
make it down this mountain. Andit seemed like it took forever to get
down that mountain, even though wewere traveling at the speed of light,
because headed down, Yeah, thatwas it. So we finally make it
(06:44):
to the bottom, right, andthere's a rest area off to the side,
and we go off to the restarea. But well, I mean
none of us had to use abathroom because we did that coming down the
mountain your pants. We get outand one of the guys just kisses the
ground. It's like, thank youLord that we made it safe. But
I was we were all just terrifiedthat something was gonna because I mean,
(07:05):
you've seen those passenger vans from theuniversity, so they're in great shape,
right, and there's four of usin there with all this equipment, and
uh, we we finally made itdown, and I just can't that's my
favorite story from college on the radiostation and surviving that we did survive.
I mean it, if I didn'tsurvive, I'm not here telling you.
(07:28):
It's definitely not a favorite. Inthat situation, not even have the news
clipping and be like this is myfavorite story. Wow, we died on
the mountain. This is Oh goodness, I am. I'm shocked survived.
So that's that's the one story thatjust I can't believe I survived that.
Wow. I literally have gone throughso many stories in my head. I
mean, boating while drinking, nota good plans, going out on dates,
(07:54):
first dates, and actually being inthe car with somebody, and then
going to a house that was nothis, not mine, and it was
scary. I was like, yeah, that's not a good idea. Yeah,
I mean this is about this isabout choices. But I made some
terrible choices. But hey, thankgoodness I survived all of those. Yeah,
and we're all here today. Isthat excited? Wee? We made
(08:18):
it? Except who doesn't do anything? I just survived everything. I don't
know how. You don't have amoment in your life that you were like,
oh gosh, okay, as youwere saying you've done a lot of
stupid things. One did come tomind, Oh good Okay. We were
in Jamaica. We had done alive radio broadcast and I got to bring
Tracy with me. It's a nicelittle trip, okay. But they did
(08:41):
tell us while on the resort.Don't leave the resort. It's not a
good plan. You have to signoff. Oh no, by the way,
that's not good on a radio showfrom Jamaica. That's correct. Yeah,
it wasn't around here because I rememberdoing a show from a laundromat.
So anyway, go ahead, I'msorry. I got to do a live
broadcast from Jamaica and it was incredible. Here's the thing. Tracy really wanted
(09:07):
to venture out. She did theresort, tell you what he lad.
And this lady approaches us down onthe beach and she says, come with
me. I've got some jewelry. No, I would like you to see.
Tracy doesn't know how to tell herno, and she says, Dave,
come on, please, we justgotta we just got to sign out
(09:30):
here. We won't be long. And so I reluctantly went with my wife
wow and walked no kidding, amile down the beach. Okay, and
we go into this back alley lookingsituation. Listen, and it's like a
forest, it's all grown up.And I'm like, we go back there
(09:52):
and we were we will never beseen again. And by the way,
she also the lady also said,I want to sell you some jewelry for
the baby she was pregnant, ofcourse, okay, for the baby.
That's why Tracy couldn't tell her no. I couldn't tell Tracy no. So
so you're both just gonna die inJamaica. A big deal. So we
head back to this little through thislittle alley, and there are people,
(10:16):
uh participating in party supplies in whichthey asked me if I wanted to participate
in some party supplies, participate inthat's what they say. So and me
to my decisions, I'd be like, yeah, what you got? I
Actually here's how I refused. Ijust said, actually, we have our
(10:37):
own, but thank you. Iappreciate the offer. So we go back.
She checks out the jewelry, shebuys a couple of pieces, and
we actually got to walk away, and John headed back down the beach and
(10:58):
made it back to the resort, saying, you didn't walk, you sprinted.
I don't sprint anywhere. It wasprobably a brisk I am glad you
survived that. Yeah, I dohave a moment, but there you go.
Dumb decisions is what really? Thosepoor choice That's a horror movie right
(11:20):
there. I know that's when yousee on sci Fi network or something.
I told him. So he wasdriving to work the other day and he
said, well, there was aguy driving down the road with no lights
on, so of course I flashedhim, my bride, I do not
flash those lights, I said,Did he turn around? And he flipped
his lights on and immediately turn aroundkind to kill you? He goes,
(11:43):
well, no, I'm here. No, he continued on his path.
Did you see the movie Urban Legends. Yeah, okay, that's kind of
the same thing. Is the samething, and that's why you don't do
that. It's a bad idea.Listen, do you want to take the
chance? And Dave said, well, what if you passed somebody with no
lights on? Would you just leaving? Bill say, yeah, no problem.
(12:03):
I'm gonna let them live their lifedriving around, but no longer trust
my life on and cuss him out. You call him an idiot. You
move on, right, I'm notdying because of that idiot. Oh my
god. We are we are all. We survived somehow. Yeah, but
most of your tube were bad choices. Mine was weather related. I couldn't
(12:28):
do anything about that. There wasno choice in you in your situation.
Well, that seems like a wrapcheck back weekly in case we do something.
