The Birthday Bass Show would not becomplete without the one, the only,
Carnie Wilson of Wilson Phillips. Hi, how are you? Hey? I'm
great? How are you? Myfriend? Good? Karnie. You and
I have been friends and talking forso many years. It's been for a
long time. It's been a while, Chris, how are you? I
am wonderful. First of all,I want to know how you are,

(00:23):
because I know you've had a lotgoing on over the holidays. You moved
into a new house, and you'redoing some cooking stuff on social media,
which obviously I follow, and Itry, and I fail miserably every time
I do try, it just doesn'twork out. I'm like, Karnie would
not eat this. I know shewouldn't. Oh listen, there was a
time when I would cook and thenit would be in the trash can.

(00:46):
That's how you get good, youknow, you have to fail, and
so it's got to be like,oh my god, I put the salt
in instead of the sugar. Ohgod, you know, And that's how
you learn, you know what Imean, And also you find like what
you're good at. I mean,I started cooking, and so scrambling eggs
It was as simple as I'm like, you know what, I'm gonna make
these the best grambled eggs ever. And I wound up getting really good at
scrabbling eggs. Yeah, yeah,I try, and I'll tell you.

(01:07):
Over the holidays, I tried tomake a shredded chicken recipe and it was
the biggest epic fail ever. Ihave like a great recipe. I'll sent
it to you. It's so easy, it will blow your mind. It's
just chicken and a jar of salsa. It is so easy. Chris,
I am talking to my sweet friendCarnie Wilson of Wilson Phillips Carne. What
was the highlight of your Christmas?I had the best present anybody could ask

(01:30):
for. We got my kids,my sister's kids, and everybody sang together
for the first time, and wegot all the grandkids to sing and they
sang Surfer Girl and in my roomby the Beach Boys, and I was
giving them all their parts and theywere doing the harmonies. We were crying.
My mother was filming it. Itwas insane. You know what's funny
is I I am horrible, likeI'll create my own things and or at

(01:55):
least that I kind of put myown twist on it, like you just
said, and I'm make it betterevery time, but there are only a
few select things that that works with. The chicken shredded chicken that I tried
to make over the holidays was likethe biggest epic fail and I wanted to
I'm so embarrassed because that's the bigthing that I made for friends and family.
And yeah, I'm like, guys, I don't know how to get

(02:17):
this any less saltier. I'm sosorry. You're gonna have sodium issues after
you eat this food. It's soyou over salted it. You know.
I made chicken. I made treadof chicken, but I did it in
the crockpot, and I've got likea great recipe. I sent it to
you. It's so easy it wouldblow your mind. It's just chicken and
a jar of salsa, your favoritesalcea. You could do a hot or

(02:39):
mild or medium, and you justput it in the crockpot with the salsa,
a little bit of chicken stock, and literally you could do bone in
or bone out and you and youcook it in the crockpot and it will
always taste perfect, and then youcan tread it with forks. It is
so easy, Chris. Oh,you've got to send me that because this
was I used canned chicken, somechicken, uh seas, you know,

(03:01):
the chicken powder stuff. I thinkthat's where my problem was is I used
way too much chicken powder and itjust wait a minute, wait a minute,
wait a minute. You used cannedchicken. Well no, no,
well, okay, yes, Iused the chunk chicken. That's what I'm
telling you, Carney. Here itis right there. That was your first

(03:23):
mistake. I got to use realchicken, real chicken. You used real
chicken, but you used canned whichis like this equal sodium, I mean
right there. You know. OhI didn't even think about that. Oh
my gosh. All right, well, all right, you're you're gonna help
me out with those hocket It figuredout. Well, listen, I know
you've got so much going on rightnow. And I loved seeing the holiday

(03:46):
shows and and just you know thestuff that you had posted, uh where
your daughter had joined you for theseshows, you and Wendy, and I
just I thought, this is soamazing. She's so good you, she
is so good. She is sucha beautiful singer. I'm still I'm still

(04:08):
in shock. You know, everytime she sings, it's really strange.
I can't and I know as amom, you know, you hear them
sing and you're always proud of themno matter what they do. And then
I watch other people watch her sing, and it is so incredible when she
when she sings people, it's likea visceral reaction people have. She's got

(04:31):
this honesty and vulnerability and soothing andlovely tones, and her pitch is stupid
good. So I'm just so proudof her. I love hearing her sing,
watching her, and I love singingwith her. And you know,
she's been singing since she was beforeshe could talk. It's just the truth.

(04:54):
So she's she's studying voice in college. She's now she's you know,
doing TV shows together, she's onthe road, and it's just really great
to see. Well, you havetwo beautiful Lucy and Lola. They are
the most beautiful people. They followright after you. They're just the most

(05:15):
beautiful. Thank you, Thank youfor saying that. I'll have to send
you something that I know you recordedfor me a long time ago, and
it was when they were both little, and their voices on it. So
I'm going to have to well youprobably have it, but I just think
back to that and I'm like, how is it possible that they're grown up
so much? I know, Iknow Lucy we went, she's you know

(05:42):
my kids. I tell them,if you if you have really good grades,
like a's okay, then you canget a car when you turn sixteen.
So Lucy's not she's not sixteen yet, she's going to be fifteen.
But what I do is, andI know it's spoiled, but I like
to teach them how to drive ontheir car that they're going to be driving.
So you know, if she holdsup to the agreement and she does

(06:05):
her laundry, keys, her roomclean and gets good grades, then she
gets the car. So Lola didthat, so now it's Lucy's turn.
So I love we went. Youknow, we were going around looking at
cars and everything, would like dowe get electric, do whatever? But
I don't know what my point was, but it's just, yeah, they're
growing up so fast. They're justthey're just I just can't get over it.

(06:25):
It's a trip and I hope thatwell. Finally, on Christmas Day,
speaking of the holidays, I hadthe best present anybody could ask for
we got my kids, my sister'skids, and everybody's sang together for the
first time, and we got allthe grandkids to sing, and they sang
Surfer Girl and in my room bythe Beach Boys, and I was giving
them all their parts and they weredoing the harmonies. We were crying.

(06:48):
My mother was filming it. Itwas insane. Well that I would love
to see that. And you know, here's the thing, And I wonder
this Carney, because when I wasover the weekend, I was looking at
I was watching back these AGT videosof like the Best fifty or whatever,
and they had a family that Ithink all eight or nine family members sang,

(07:09):
I mean, from the youngest upuntil and I'm just you never know
what's gonna happen with something like that. But what is amazing to me and
the folks that I've talked to andeven knowing you, is it is it
just in the genes that the kidsof people who sing can sing in some
cases just as good. Because Isee that a lot with many of the

(07:31):
artists out there, and I'm like, wow, Like I have a radio
voice, I've been told, butdon't get me to sing, because you're
gonna I'm gonna break things. Buthow is how is it that it works
out that way? Oh god,I don't know. I mean, first
of all, you do have aradio voice. It's great, but I
don't know. I do think it'shereditary, I really do, and people

(07:56):
can it can be surprising to likemy husband Rob, no one in his
family's musical, and he's incredibly musical, just as you know, a writer
and a musician and a singer. He's got perfect pitch and so I think
he I don't know who knows wherehe got that, but I kind of
feel like, you know, it'sfunny you say that because there's a there's
a video going around. I thinkCatherine mcpheeth, David Foster's wife. She's

(08:20):
you know, she's a bit youngerthan him, and they have a two
year old and this Have you seenthe video of him playing the drums?
No, I haven't, but Ido follow both of them because I just
I adore both of them. Okay, right, so they're they're amazing.
They're they're amazing. I've been aDavid Foster fan for so many years,
and Catherine's a great singer and everything. But they've got a two year old

(08:41):
and here's the boy playing to Rockwith You Michael Jackson's song Rock with You
on the drums and he's two yearsold, and it's it is, it's
just beyond So you have to golook at this video because it's really really
amazing. And I do think thattalent is in the jeans and sometimes it's

(09:01):
not. Some people that are comingfrom a you know, musical family,
there they can't sing. But Ithink it's pretty rare. I do believe
it's And Lucy is my younger daughter, is a wonderful musician. You know,
she's more of a musician than Lolais. Lola is more of a
singer. But at the same time, I believe that Lucy is just shy.
So that's why I was so amazing. It was so amazing on Christmas

(09:24):
Day that finally everybody starts singing togetherand you could hear each of the grandkids,
you know, the tones and thevoices and when they sing the harmony
together. It was like, thisis the third generation singing harmony. And
it's really amazing to see that.Like there's the Beach Boys, and there's
Wilson Phillips and then there's my kidsand It's just a trip that I can't

(09:46):
even imagine. I'm as you justsaid that, I'm thinking Beach Boys,
Wilson Phillips. Yeah, all thefamily, you know, your parents,
their mamas and the papas, youknow. I just I think to myself,
what is a Christmas or any dayof the week, but a holiday
specifically like in the household, whenyou get all of those generations of magic

(10:13):
together. Well, not every yearis a musical one, but this past
Christmas was for us because we hadjust performed in Oregon and we did a
Christmas show. It was our firstChristmas show with Lola, and we did
a bunch of songs and she sangSilent Night, and Wendy and I did

(10:33):
these real gentle but beautiful harmonies andthe verses and in the chorus, and
it was so touching. It wasa gorgeous rendition of All Holy Night,
and then we sang Silent Night andwhen j Wonderland and all the in Hey
Santa, all these great songs. But this Christmas I was adamant. I

(10:54):
had a really big party and itwas mostly family, a few friends,
and we rented a tent and Imade I had seven crock pots of food.
It was stupid, and I cookedfor all these people, almost seventy
people, and I'm not sure I'lldo that again because I literally took me
two weeks to recover. I wasso I was so fricking tired. But
I was like, after everybody kindof goes or whatever, whoever wants to

(11:18):
hang around, We're going to goin the living room and we sang all
these Christmas songs together. Everybody joinedin and then we sang like Little Saint
Nick, the Beach Boys on LittleSaint Nick, and you know, Rudolph
and just fun songs and it wasso like. We had our friend Jeff
Ross playing the piano and Rob playedguitar. It was just beautiful and everybody

(11:41):
could join in. And it's likeI was so like in the moment,
and like every year as I getolder, I keep thinking to myself,
you know, not to be likemorbid or like negative, but you know,
every year is precious and every dayis precious. So I looked around
and I was like, I lovethese people. I love music. How
lucky are we that we get tospend these these times singing and doing what

(12:05):
brings us joy? Ah? Ilove that well, look, you know
you're doing outside of the holidays,You've you've moved into a new house.
I assume you're you look like you'rekind of getting more familiar and acclimated with
your new kitchen as far as youknow, doing your cooking and stuff.
But it looks beautiful. It's nice, but we're going to redo it.

(12:26):
It's a big space, and Iam I'm settling into the house, and
I'm you know, it's hard tomove when you've been in the place for
a little bit, and then justwe have moved moved around a little bit,
and now this is the place thatwe're settling into, and I'm so
grateful. I love it here.I'm looking at my backyard right now with

(12:46):
it's not a huge backyard, butit's got a beautiful pool and all these
trees. There's a lot of treeshere, a lot of trees here,
and the same gardener here has beenhere for twenty two years, so it's
very very lush. Wow. AndI just told my husband, you know,
we love our home, you know. And I'm just at this point
where I want to make everything countand make the best of it and be

(13:07):
grateful for what I have. Myhealth my family and everything, and it's
really important to me. And youknow, we only had one Wilson Phillips
concert the whole year. It wasthe slowest year in sixteen years. And
I think the business has just takena big hit touring lives. But this
year we've made some changes. We'veactually changed, We're changing our agency.

(13:28):
We are saying yes to more gigsand we're going to have more shows this
year with Wilson Phillips. And I'vegot shows with Beach Boy Al Jardine and
shows with Wendy and my sister,I mean I and my daughter Lola.
So and there's a new TV showI'm working on. I can't really talk
about it, but it's quite afew episodes and I'm well, I've waited
nineteen years for this, So thatwill be starting in April. And you

(13:52):
know, great things this year. And I'm doing lots of radio shows with
Jeff Lewis. So you know, life is moving emotion. It seems like
just a little bit just this Midge. You know, I am excited about
I'm excited to see where you're goingthis year. And hopefully you can schedule
a date here at the Renaissance Theaterin Mansfield, because that would be fantastic.

(14:15):
We would love to have you here. Oh, I'd love to I'd
love to come there. I loveto be there. I just I'm grateful
for every opportunity. And you know, I'm just grateful for the people that
follow me, you know, onInstagram or follow me on the Facebook or
whatever. I'm trying to get awebsite together for a certain type of well
I can't really talk about it.Isn't that annoying but annoying, but it

(14:41):
won't be long. It won't belong. But yeah, it's really great.
I'm just I'm happy we connected again. And and uh yeah, I
mean people are really it's weird. While there's really a lot of joy on
some days, there's a lot ofsadness on other days. And I guess
that's just life. And I'm justyou know, like Annie Lennox posted this
thing about, you know, thepeople that have died, and you know,

(15:07):
I'm just so like moved by theenergy of love that's put out there
with people. And we need tokeep prayers going. And you know,
it's just life is it's a bigcircle. It moves away from us,
it comes back to us. Joyleave joy comes and I just want people
to know that I'm grateful. I'mgrateful for everyone. Well, you know

(15:30):
what I love about you, AndI know I've said this before, but
every time I watch a video thatyou do, you're so one on one
in touch with your fans, andthat's that's important because even someone like me,
who gets the opportunity probably more thananybody else does to talk to you.
I think you know, I knowwhen when folks respond to me and

(15:54):
I can have those conversations, Ihave a greater appreciation for that person and
their talent. And that goes withalso seeing someone at a live show.
I have so much more of agreater appreciation, even though I didn't think
that was possible for that artist, when they just took the time to be
more one on one and intimate.I know everybody can't do that, but

(16:15):
I'm telling you that's that's huge,at least for me, and I'm sure
I can speak for others. Well, Carnie, I have to tell you
this because I'm sure you haven't seenit anywhere unless you're, you know,
snooping out my socials, which Ihope you are. You know, the
last few last several years. Infact, Darren and I have been together.

(16:37):
This year, we're coming up onfourteen years, so something maybe everyone
doesn't know. Over the last severalyears, I've reached out to you and
said, hey, could you recorda quick video for me just to say
happy anniversary on a specific date ora year. It was the sixth anniversary,
and then it was the twelfth.I want you to know now that

(17:00):
we are going to get married thisyear. Oh I'm so glad to hear
that. The reception is what we'regoing to make into a big thing,
because I think that's what everybody wantsto do anyway, just throwing it out
there. I'll let you know whatthe dates are, and the door's always
open for you to show up ifyou're not busy. I will try to
make it. Let me know whenit is, and I will try to
be there, you know, dependingon the schedule. Like we know,

(17:22):
is nuts, but oh yeah,I'm so happy to hear this for you
both. And congratulations And isn't thatwonderful? It really is? And off
air, at some point, I'llhave to tell you the story of how
it all went down, because thestory itself, I mean the originality of
it it was an epic fail.I mean, he was clueless to what

(17:45):
was going on. It was justyou're going to have to hear the story.
But I won't share it on theair because it's just it's it's too
funny. But I will have toshare it with you. I want to,
you know, I want to hearit. Oh, I'm going to
share it with you for sure.Carnie Wilson of Wilson Phillips and such a
wonderful, wonderful human being. Andthank you for calling the birthday bash.

(18:06):
I'm forty eight today. Ah,happy birthday darling and love you too,
and the best to you and yoursand your family and everyone. I'm happy
for you and have a happy, happy day, and happy birthday, Darling.
