Speaker 1 (00:00):
On Sports it is Fox Sports Radio. Very excited because
I believe that when we talk about this FRISNOE State
men's golf team and the victory in the Nick Watney Invitational,
that since you've been coming in the studio, mister Joseph Lloyd,
that I've been somewhat of a good luck charm like
a black leprechaun if you will, for this Frisno State

(00:24):
men's golf team. I think that I am rubbing off
on you guys, and I could be like an unofficial
mascot next to Victor E.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
Bulldog, I think.

Speaker 3 (00:36):
So.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
Okay, congratulations on winning the nick Watney.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
Thank you.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
That is amazing. So of course you have your coach
in here, Chad. It is great to see you.

Speaker 3 (00:49):
Great to see you too, glad to be here.

Speaker 4 (00:51):
You know, here's the.

Speaker 1 (00:51):
Thing, like I didn't think Chad would ever step in
the studio with me. I didn't think Chad was gonna
come through it. But see Chad's like, you know what,
we won the Nick Wady. You guys brought the trophy
and you brought Chad. Yes, they had to bring him,
had to bring Chad. I love it. So let's go
ahead and talk about the excitement on the final day

(01:13):
and what the team was feeling, especially when you knew
it was all on the line.

Speaker 4 (01:18):
Go ahead, Joseph.

Speaker 3 (01:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (01:19):
So we started day tied for the way to San Diego,
I believe, was it.

Speaker 3 (01:24):
Pacific was two or three shots back, yes.

Speaker 5 (01:26):
And then Santa Clara was four or five shots back,
and so we were very It was the exact moment
we wanted to be in. We want to be in
that final group with a chance to win with eighteen
holes to go, and we just all knew that we
just had to Our theme of the week was patient,
So we just had to keep staying patient throughout all
eighteen holes and see what happens. And luckily, you know,

(01:48):
we were able to add you out in the playoffs.

Speaker 1 (01:50):
So when you got into the playoffs, your thoughts, I mean,
as a team, when you're sitting there and you're going,
what did the coach say to you guys, I mean,
come on, this wasn't all just like you know, but
c K.

Speaker 4 (02:01):
We already had this dialed in. We visualized it.

Speaker 1 (02:03):
We knew that if we kept it within striking distance
or we were gonna be tied with him, we were
gonna pull it.

Speaker 3 (02:09):
Out.

Speaker 4 (02:09):
It was automatic. There's no way. Don't try to sell
me on that.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
Don't try to sell me on calm, cool, collected impatience.

Speaker 4 (02:16):
I want to know, coach. I want to know.

Speaker 1 (02:18):
Because they got the rest of the week off. That
tells me how excited you are that they won.

Speaker 6 (02:22):
We've been going NonStop for four weeks. They need a
little break right now, get back up on school. But
there's some strategy in a playoff.

Speaker 4 (02:30):
Okay, talk to me.

Speaker 6 (02:31):
You've got ten guys in a playoff K against two teams,
so you've got five and five. I really felt like
we needed to get our guns out there first, so
we sent Joseph James Wattney out first and our freshman
Chris Bettencourt out as well first.

Speaker 2 (02:47):
So I won the toss.

Speaker 6 (02:49):
We were able to put three in the first group,
two in the second group. I wanted to get off
to a hot start and get out in front, and
that's exactly what happened. We were able to make a
couple of birdies, put them behind. What's cool about technology
and where we're at Talk to me. Everyone knows what's
going on texting. Yes, the group behind them knows exactly

(03:11):
what they need to do what has already transpired exactly,
and it was a lot of fun. Obviously there's some nerves,
right It's it's a win no matter what in our
ranking system, whether we won or lost. But we're playing
for the trophy, for the trophies here and the last
time y'all won the trophy, who was on the team?

Speaker 3 (03:30):
I was? That was a few years ago. See long time,
long time coming.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
I mean, I love what you just said because that's
exactly it. What the way he just broke it down
right there, Joseph, He's like, I know what technology If
I put my killers on the course first, put the
pressure on. By the time it gets back to San Diego,
they're gonna be like, all right, we know what we
have to do and we're behind it.

Speaker 3 (03:56):
Correct. That's exactly what happens. I like it.

Speaker 1 (04:01):
So knowing that your coach relies on you, knowing how
well you played, that has to make you feel good, Joseph.

Speaker 5 (04:08):
Yet, you know, I was really hoping we were gonna
get into a playoff because I three putted seventeen and
I was really pissed at myself, but I thought I
lost it for us. But to have a chance to
go out there and redeem myself in the playoff and
make Birdie for the team. Was it made me feel
much better that we got the trophy and it stayed
with us.

Speaker 1 (04:27):
So that's interesting that you brought that up. I didn't
want to bring up seventeen, but you brought it up.
So we're gonna go ahead and talk about it. And
we can talk about it because you guys won because
you brought the trophy in the studio.

Speaker 3 (04:37):
Correct.

Speaker 1 (04:37):
So seventeen there you are. You're thinking to yourself in
your mind, it's all falling apart and it's on your shoulders.
How did you get up for eighteen and then the playoff?

Speaker 5 (04:50):
Yeah? So seven hit a good five iron in the
middle of the green about twenty five feet behind the hole,
and it's a very tricky putt just because how fast
it is going out going down the hill, and I
hit it. I knew right when I hit it, I
hit it too hard and went six feet by, and
then the horseshoed back to me on the second pot.
So I was a little flustered walking off the green,
but I knew still to part five stone, make Birdie

(05:11):
still help the team when and that's what I did.
Stepped up, hit a good drive, hit a good three
iron just short of green, chipped it up to six
feet and made it.

Speaker 1 (05:19):
So you hear him talk about after the mistake on seventeen,
did you know, Okay, you know what, this is the
type of player that we have on our team, the
senior leadership that we need with this team.

Speaker 4 (05:30):
He's gonna be fine.

Speaker 3 (05:32):
Absolutely.

Speaker 2 (05:32):
I mean it's hard to play under the gun right
this game.

Speaker 6 (05:36):
Every shot matters. We're sitting there watching, we kind of
know where we're at. We knew it was a two
horse race coming down the stretch with San Diego. Obviously
that hurt a little bit, but you know a few
of our guys made some mistakes coming in and then
they finished strong. That's the big thing is for him
to turn it around make a nice birdie.

Speaker 2 (05:59):
On the last knowing what is on the line. It
was fantastic. We had so much fun.

Speaker 5 (06:05):
And I just watched the San Diego kid chip in
from off the green for eagle, so I was like,
I knew.

Speaker 3 (06:11):
Like this had to go.

Speaker 5 (06:13):
I feared we were at least one behind at that point.
That chip in puts us two behind. If I miss this,
we're three behind. I don't know if we can come
up with three shots with However, everyone was finishing up right.
Obviously we didn't know it because some of the scores
had been put in, but I knew that this putt
was it mattered a lot, and it did.

Speaker 3 (06:31):
It ended up mattering.

Speaker 1 (06:32):
All right, Well, let's go ahead and talk about the
fact that this is the first time that they won
the Nick Watney since you were on the team. So
knowing that and then getting the job done, how did
you feel last night?

Speaker 2 (06:49):
Oh, wonderful? Had a cigar there.

Speaker 6 (06:51):
It is you know, it's been twenty three years. That's
a long time in between wins in a turn, but
it is difficult to win a tournament in golf. You've
got between twelve and sixteen teams at every event, so
you're not just playing one team, right, So you know,
you got to play well, and we were able to

(07:12):
do that, play three really solid rounds. James Wattney, a
sophomore for US, finishing second Ryan Furpo in the playoff
making that clutch.

Speaker 4 (07:23):
But you know, I will say this was due.

Speaker 2 (07:28):
He was he was all right now, I'll.

Speaker 1 (07:31):
Tell you right now. If there was somebody that was happy,
it was Furpo.

Speaker 5 (07:35):
Yeah, he didn't show it all, but he was stone call,
just walked it in like no emotion.

Speaker 3 (07:41):
But that's what he is.

Speaker 2 (07:42):
He's a grinder man.

Speaker 5 (07:44):
I was so happy for him because I know how
hard he's been working you to come up clutch for
us in that moment. I know he felt really good
about it and it was just great to see.

Speaker 4 (07:53):
So let's talk about it then.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
I mean, it seems like the team is gelling, and
you lost some golfers last year from the fall season
to now where we are in the early spring season, coach,
you have to feel like, man, this team is really
starting to gel.

Speaker 6 (08:10):
Dramatic improvement every event this spring so far. We're just
working on the simple things, the process, the patients accepting
poor shots. I mean, these are ultimate basics in golf,
and I really feel like we're maturing as a team.
You know, when you've got a freshman, couple sophomores, a junior,

(08:30):
and a senior in the lineup. Overall, we're fairly young
and a little bit inexperience.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
But when you do things.

Speaker 6 (08:37):
Like this, you really capitalize on maturing, You really capitalize
on your team's going places now because.

Speaker 3 (08:47):
They have that under their hat.

Speaker 6 (08:48):
That Hey, I can do things under pressure and you know,
just just another moment to shout out Jaden Hunter.

Speaker 3 (08:55):
Yeah, huge week for him.

Speaker 6 (08:57):
I know he didn't play great the first two rounds,
but a sixty eight the final round when it mattered
the most. He's really coming on for us. And also
Mason Benbrook a top ten as an individual, our big guy.
He's six foot six, great wedge player, great putter. He
had a great week as well. So you're right, we
are jelling at the right time.

Speaker 3 (09:19):
We've got three or four.

Speaker 2 (09:20):
Events left before postseason and let's keep it going.

Speaker 1 (09:24):
And what did what did you just say? Like, uh,
it was about patience? You said something real cool patient.

Speaker 3 (09:30):
What was it? Acceptance? Acceptance?

Speaker 2 (09:33):
Patience, It helps our maturity. Those two things.

Speaker 3 (09:38):
I need this.

Speaker 4 (09:39):
I actually need a shirt that says all those things.

Speaker 2 (09:43):
Hey, Golf, we have our sayings were lingo.

Speaker 3 (09:45):
I need I need the process.

Speaker 1 (09:47):
I need that is when I'm on the course, like
you know, like we drive around with the cards and
the music playing. I need like before I take my shot,
I just need your voice to say all those things
and I'd be like, I'm gonna be okay.

Speaker 3 (10:00):
I couldn't agree more. It helps anybody. I love it.

Speaker 4 (10:03):
Well, you know what.

Speaker 1 (10:03):
Congratulations you guys are fantastic. Thank you guys so much
for coming in the studio today, winners of the Nick
Watney Invitational. Fresno State Men's Golf couldn't be happier for
you guys. And again, I really do feel I think
ever since Joseph has been coming in the studio that
it's me.

Speaker 4 (10:21):
It really is me.

Speaker 3 (10:22):
We feel it too.

Speaker 5 (10:23):
You might have to make a weekly appearance now, Tom
Taylor mightly ten.

Speaker 1 (10:29):
Look, we don't need to come back down here every week,
all right, you know, like this is cool and everything,
but every single week. So you guys are off into
what San Diego State? Yeah, okay, two weeks. So you
get this week off. You get to relax, you get
to celebrate the Nick Watney Invitational, you get to smoke
some more cigars, you get to celebrate anyway you want
to celebrate. I don't ask no questions. The reality of

(10:51):
it is Fresne State Men's Golf. They are your twenty
twenty five Nick Watney Invitational champions. Congratulations, Thanks you very much.
