Speaker 1 (00:00):
Of course Christy's Classic Kids, a big ninety three to nine.
What's going on? It is hipman with you, and I've
got Brian on the phone right now. You know it's
coming up in just a couple of days. We're talking
about battling barbecue. Now, this is an annual event and
it's for great Craus, you know, Brian, I got you, Brian,
tell me if people have been living under a rock.
This has actually been an annual event now for a while.
Tell me about Battling Barbecue.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
Okay, it's basically twenty eighteen. He started. We had a
friend in high school, of course, as we graduated back
in the day, of course, but he ended up having
one of his sons ended up having a brain tumor,
which is cancerous. And you know, we would try to
think any ways you can help a friend, right, I'm like, oh,
we could do barbecue plates, but you know, how much
is that raise? And like my friend, one of my friends, said,

(00:43):
don't you do barbecue competitions? I said, yeah, we're.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
Not that good, but we still do them, you know,
And she said, well, why don't you figure out how
to get it to where we can do one and
just have a barbie competition for him.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
And I was like, well, that's a hey, let's do it.
I've never heard of people doing that before. So we
had one and ended up having like twenty teams and
had a great turnout, and so I thought, you know,
we did raise a great amount of money. I figured
that was it. And all the teams over there were like,
you got to keep doing this, this is fun, Like
we got to keep going. You need to figure this out.
And so I thought, well, I guess I got to

(01:16):
get a board together. And so ever since then we
had had a bunch of close friends of mine we
all be team board members, and twenty twenty four we're
still doing it. So every year we raise funds for
children of battling cancer in the Coastal Bend area and
we do you know, barbie competitions, cornhole tournaments, live bands

(01:37):
and stuff. Because we've came the long way from just
a you know, sit in a parking lot with nineteen teams.

Speaker 1 (01:42):
Yeah, I can tell you that much. Yeah. Of course
this is a free event happening in Engles side. I mean,
where else are you going to get besides the barbecue competition,
live music and for the past couple years you've had
pro wrestling there. It was kind of crazy.

Speaker 2 (01:56):
Every year we have progress there again. It's it's one
of our favorite things to do. All the kids love
it and a lot of adults love it too. I
have a couple of board members that are like, all right,
great time, I want to see this met real quick.
I'm like, all right, go watch.

Speaker 3 (02:07):
That's fine, no big deal.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
It's really entertaining men.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
Yes, And of course by this barbecue competition is a
state championship cookoff, right that it is?

Speaker 2 (02:16):
That is that is correct?

Speaker 1 (02:17):
So if people want to get involved with this, can
people still enter into this right now?

Speaker 2 (02:23):
That is correct? So basically you just go to our
website Battling Barbecue dot org and you'd click away. Right
when you go to the frontal'll ask if you want
to join the cookoff competition. It's doing a dollar buy in,
but it's seventy five hundred dollars total in winning, so
it's a good chunk of money to win. So if
you you think you're good, see what you got? You

(02:43):
know what I mean? Enter and like I said, all
the proceeds we're making it's goes straight to the family,
so that we keep zero. We keep nothing. All my
board members and myself, we don't take a wage of
any kind.

Speaker 1 (02:54):
Yeah, that's such a great cause. I've gone in a
couple of years and actually the food is really good,
especially you know, if you ever need a judge for
the brisket competition, you just let me know. I will
be there. It's good, it's going to be tell me
it's going to be over it. What's the park name again?
Over there in Engles Side, So it's in.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
Ol Simmons Park. It'll be Saturday at Intel Simmons Park
and Engle Site. So that's basically right off the highway
and it's from noon till nine pm.

Speaker 1 (03:20):
All right, So and of course if you want to
find out more details go to Battland Barbecue dot org.
It's going to be a great cause for it. It's
for a great cause and also it's going to be
a great competition and much much more looking forward to it.
Is there anything else you want to pass on to
the people wanting to know more about Battle and Barbecue?

Speaker 2 (03:37):
I mean, so we have our you go to our Facebook,
check out our Facebook. We have Instagram, you know our website.

for teams. We're looking for, you know, people that want
to compete in the the Coano competition, and people just
come out and join themselves. It's a free admission. You
don't have to pay to get in. You can walk
around do whatever. You know. We got vendors, tons of

(03:59):
vendors there, kid activity, so just come on by. It's
a great time and a great cause. All right.
