Speaker 1 (00:02):
Friday morning on Colorado's Morning News Gina Gnzek and Chad Bauer,
Inframarti Lenz on eight fifty AM ninety four to one FM,
and on the iHeartRadio app Fox thirty one Pinpoint. Weather
mostly sunny today. High temperatures will be in the upper fifties.
We'll be reaching the mid sixties tomorrow, dropping back to
near sixty degrees coming.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
Up on Sunday.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
I took a peek at what we could be expecting
next week, and I think I saw some eighty degree
days coming up.

Speaker 3 (00:29):
So enjoy it.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
To Currently thirty three in Denver, The Aurora.

Speaker 4 (00:32):
Police Department is committed the transparency and public safety.

Speaker 3 (00:36):
We are here to set the record straight.

Speaker 5 (00:37):
That's Police Chief Todd Chamberlain firing back against federal immigration
officials who claimed Aurora police refused to help them find
two men who escaped from an ICE facility.

Speaker 4 (00:47):
At nine thirty pm on March the eighteenth, there was
a power out each at the ICE GEO facility, which
caused some type of security breach. Ice officials believe two
detainees escaped. At twelve thirty am, ICE GEO officials completed
an emergency head count and confirmed that two detainees were missing.

Speaker 3 (01:04):
At two thirty four and a half, hours.

Speaker 4 (01:07):
After the estimated time of the escape, ICE GEO officials
finally notified aur nine to one one and requested an
Aurora Police department response.

Speaker 5 (01:17):
He says, by that time though there was little his
officers could do, but National Border Patrol Council President Paul
Perez accused police of being political and not doing their
part to protect the public when they.

Speaker 6 (01:28):
Put their communities at risk. I don't care what the
person escaped for. If there's an escapee, every law enforcement
officer should be out there searching. That's what we do.
We want to do that. We want to serve and
protect our communities. And for the decisions to be made
at the top to say we're not going to help,
that's politics.

Speaker 3 (01:44):
That it's worse.

Speaker 5 (01:45):
Chamberlin In says that this is a federal matter because
local police can't do much because of state law that
forbids them from getting involved in federal immigration matters. Those
two men that escaped are still at large.

Speaker 1 (01:58):
A man hospitalized and critical condition after an officer involved
shooting in Denver last night. Police were called to an
alleyway between Lafayette and North Humboldt streets on reports of
a man waving.

Speaker 2 (02:07):
A gun around when they arrived.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
Officers say that he raised the gun towards them and
they opened fire. Those officers are now on administrative leave.
Three suspects suspected of vandalizing Tesla dealerships, including one from Colorado,
are now facing federal charges.

Speaker 7 (02:23):
A suspect arrested in Loveland for vandalizing the Tesla dealership

suspects from Oregon and South Carolina. Tony manis KOA News.

Speaker 5 (02:57):
Four districts are back in sessions today after they were
closed yesterday, with many teachers attending a rally at the
state capitol. The teachers we spoke to say that they
hate for kids to miss a day of school, but
it's important to fight for funding for public schools.

Speaker 8 (03:14):
Our budgets get cut, our kids get further robbed, and
if you look at Colorado's funding, we are number forty
eight on the list, which is insane for a state
that tries to put itself out there as like an
educated like a hub for people to come to.

Speaker 5 (03:26):
More than one hundred schools were closed for the day
after thousands of teachers called in. The rally came on
the same day, President Trump signed that executive order that
could lead to the shutdown of the US Department of Education.
Colorado lawmakers have mixed feelings about that order. Democratic Senator
Michael Bennett called the president's order outrageous, saying the decision
will affect the most vulnerable students. Republicans praised the decision,

(03:50):
with Congressman Gabe Evans saying the order to return education
decisions to the states could help empower parents, students, and teachers.
Republican Congressman Jeff Hurd also reminded the President that the
Education Department can only be permanently eliminated through an Act
of Congress. Education Secretary Linda McMahon says everything will be
done legally when it comes to dismantling the departments.

Speaker 1 (04:12):
International travel could be a mess this morning, as one
of the world's busiest airports is completely shut down.

like Paris or Ireland.

mishap here after Southwest Jet ended up in the wrong place.

takeoff from Orlando because the pilots weren't even on a runway.
The crew instead started their takeoff role on a taxiway,
a low speed lane planes typically crossed to get to
their assigned runway. Southwest saying the crew mistook the surface
for the nearby runway.

Speaker 3 (04:51):
The FAA now.

Speaker 2 (04:53):

Speaker 5 (04:55):
A federal judge has blocked the Trump administration from deporting
a University of Reas researcher accused of spreading Hamas propaganda.
The judge says that Badar Khan Surrey of Georgetown University
shall not be removed from the US unless and until
the court issues a contrary order.

Speaker 3 (05:12):
Surrey is a postdoctoral fellow.

Speaker 5 (05:14):
From India studying and teaching at Georgetown on a student
visa the Department of Homeland Security accusing him of having
connections to hamas new calls for bridge inspections across the
country less than a year after the Francis Scott Keybridge
collapsed in Baltimore, and TSB chair Jennifer hamandi.

Speaker 10 (05:32):
What we are telling bridge owners is that they need
to know the risk and determine what actions they need
to take to ensure safety.

Speaker 5 (05:41):
The list of bridges to be checked includes the Brooklyn Bridge,
Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and Philadelphia's Benjamin Franklin Bridge.

That Waard has an update on business and money news.
The closure of London's Heathrow airport likely to be very expensive.

Speaker 3 (07:15):
Actually, it probably already is.

Speaker 13 (07:17):
As reported in our newscast, the airport's closed because of
a fire at a power substation.

Speaker 3 (07:21):
Now think about this if you were on.

Speaker 13 (07:23):
A vacation and going either to or through the UK,
or if you had business or cargo flights going through London.

Speaker 14 (07:30):
Heathrow throw is one of the busiest airports in the world,
and it's completely shut down after a massive fire at
that electrical substation it caused that power out is that
left the airport and some sixteen thousand other customers in
West London without electricity. There will be a ripple effect
on travel felt for some time. I met a couple
that was supposed to fly to New York and now

(07:50):
they say that the earliest flight they can get on
will likely.

Speaker 3 (07:53):
Be on Monday, ABC's Marcus More. At this point, it's
not clear.

Speaker 13 (07:56):

Speaker 18 (11:20):
We're doing a lot of good things offensively, get to
the net, creating rebounds, lots of deflections, pretty good looks
from dumbrella and then the slot. So you have to
be pretty happy with that for the competitiveness.

Speaker 1 (12:02):
President Trump says everyone knows that eliminating the Department of
Education is the right thing to do.

Speaker 19 (12:08):
After forty five years, the United States spends more money
on education by far than any other country, yet we
ranked near the bottom of the list in terms of success.

Speaker 1 (12:19):
Signing is executive order, Trump said it's time to see
education authority be returned to individual States. Education Secretary at
Linda McMahon will have to get congressional approval to officially
abolish the department, but it's unlikely they have the votes
to do so.

Speaker 5 (12:33):
Elon Musk will reportedly be brief by defense leaders of
the Pentagon today, but there's confusion on exactly what we'll
be shared.

Speaker 3 (12:41):
The New York Times claims the.

Speaker 5 (12:42):
Military will discuss a plan for any potential war that
could break out with China. A Defense secretary Pete Hegseth
is denying the report, saying Musk's visit will be an
informal meeting about innovation, efficiencies and smarter production. In a
late night social media post, President Trump said China will
not even be mentioned or discussed.

Speaker 1 (13:02):
The suspects accused of damaging a Tesla dealership in Loveland
last month now facing federal charges. Authority say Lucy Grace
Nelson attempted to light vehicles on fire with Molotov cocktails
and then was later found in possession of materials used
to produce more incendiary weapons. Nelson one of at least
three people facing federal charges for alleged vandalism at Tesla

(13:22):
properties across the country.

Speaker 5 (13:24):
Denver's auditor says the city is still not properly tracking
expenses related to homeless programs. Auditor Timothy O'Brien says he
told the city government two years ago that it needs
to improve expense tracking so the effectiveness of homeless initiatives
can be measured. However, he said only six of the
thirty six recommendations he made in twenty twenty three have

(13:44):
been fully implemented by the city.

Speaker 1 (13:46):
And A new study ranks the state of Florida number
one for the most stressful emergency room visits.

Speaker 20 (13:51):
The rankings were compiled by Insurance Company Policy Guide and
covered factors ranging from cost in which Florida also ranked first,
to number of admissions number of inpatient days for one
thousand residents. If you're looking for the least stressfully our visits,
Wyoming is the place to be. I'm Tammage Rhio.

Speaker 1 (14:08):
And when it came to which state saw ear visits
increase the most from twenty twelve to twenty twenty two,
Colorado was ranked number five.

Speaker 1 (14:24):
Steele joining us now with a look at our early
Friday morning drive in the KOA Traffic Center.

Speaker 3 (14:30):
Yep. And it remains a very quiet one out here.

Speaker 12 (14:32):
No traffic to speak of, I mean certainly, yeah, a
little bit of company out there, but all moving very
well on routes like up north I twenty five to
and from the Tech Center sixth Avenue in and out
of Lakewood, both directions there between I twenty five ninety seventy,
it's about ten minutes the foothills drive. We've seen some
slowing up around Morrison Lookout Mountain, not a delay at
this point.

Speaker 3 (14:53):
It is a little.

Speaker 12 (14:53):
Wintry in the high country with partial snowpack up at

for Marty today alongside Gina Gondek. Day one of the
NC DOUBLEA Tournament in Denver is over koa's Keenan Dixon
was there to see the action.

Speaker 1 (15:25):
Yeah, looking at the highlights and what teams will be
facing off tomorrow for day two of March Madness. Koa's
Keenan Dixon joining us now on the KWA Common Spirit
Health Hotline with the latest Keenan may I just mention
that I believe I am ranked number one in our
NC DOUBLEA March Madness bracket pool right now.

Speaker 2 (15:42):
Thank you very much for knowing.

Speaker 1 (15:43):
Absolutely nothing about basketball, and still I know that's gonna
end very quickly for me though, But looking at what
we saw yesterday, what were some of the main highlights,
What was just the overall environment of what we saw
at ball Arena.

Speaker 16 (15:56):
Well, first off, Gina, you choosing the team's based on
mascots and colors and everything, like you said during Tuesday's
morning show, has worked so far, so I committed you
on that the environment was awesome yesterday. I mean it
was sold out both sessions, so the morning session or
the I guess the early afternoon session. The first couple

(16:17):
of games Wisconsin, Montana and BYU and never went over
VCU unbelievable atmospher. I think there were nineteen thousand people
at both sessions, so just a ton of fun in
both you know, across four the four games, but the
first three games were really blowouts, and you know, there

(16:38):
was some early action in the first half, but then
late separation kind of going into halftime.

Speaker 3 (16:44):
By most of the teams.

Speaker 16 (16:45):
VCU couldn't score in the last three minutes for the
first half, and BYU took advantage of that. You know,
Wisconsin was able to pull away from Montana early in
the second half and really assert their dominance. But it
was really until the last game of the night. You
see San Diego Michigan unbelievable finish. Michigan jumped out to

(17:07):
a ten to nothing early lead and it seemed like
you see San Diego just couldn't figure out what Michigan
was doing, but they found a way to calall all
the way back. They took a lead in the last
couple of minutes and it was back and forth, and
you see San Diego had the ball in the final
seconds to try and tie it. It was an unbelievable atmosphere.
Everything you could ask for from a first round at

(17:29):
the NCAA tournament.

Speaker 5 (17:30):
So Keenanan looking at the four teams that won in Denver,
which one of those four do you think will advance
the farthest in this tournament.

Speaker 16 (17:41):
I think Wisconsin is the best shot.

Speaker 3 (17:42):
Now, the four.

Speaker 16 (17:44):
Teams that are playing tomorrow are on different sides of
the bracket, so they're in different regions. But I don't
you know that the Wisconsin BYU matchup is going to
be very interesting to watch. You know, the Wisconsin is
a very sound team. We saw them in the Big
Ten all season, dominating and you know, finishing in that

(18:07):
top three in a very difficult conference that I know,
the SEC has kind of been the top of the
town all season, getting fourteen teams into the tournament and everything,
but I think the Big tim really stands up to them,
and Wisconsin helps with that. You know, BUYU is consistent,
they can shoot them ball very well. They didn't do
as much three point shooting yesterday, so it'll be interesting

(18:29):
to see how that strategy kind of adjust to Wisconsin. Obviously,
the home crowd situation from Uyu is going to help
him immensely. I mean it was a sea of blue
during BYU playing VCU yesterday.

Speaker 3 (18:44):
Michigan, on the other.

Speaker 16 (18:45):
Side, I think they probably have the best shot. Michigan
has looked very good Texas and him looked solid, Yale
still gave them a little bit of trouble, and Michigan
having the test against a very good UC San Diego
team in that twelve five matchup. Again, I've been saying
this since Selection Sunday. I think Michigan was under seated.

(19:05):
I mean they won the Big Ten title, beating teams
like Wisconsin, Maryland, m Purdue who were all seated higher
than them in the NCAA tournament. So getting that win
yesterday was a big step for them. I think they
can advance pretty deep in this tournament.

Speaker 1 (19:18):
Yeah, keen in that Michigan game was well past my bedtime.
So when I went to bed at halftime and I
looked and I was like, wow, wait what happened because
there was a lot bit closer than I expected when
I saw that final score.

Speaker 2 (19:29):
Real quick with the minute we have left.

Speaker 1 (19:30):
I know this isn't a ball arena game, but I'm
curious what you think. We'll see what CSU Memphis later today.

Speaker 16 (19:37):
Yeah, I think that's an interesting matchup another twelve five.
We saw a twelve five upset yesterday with McNee State
knocking off Clemson down in Wichita, and this one with
Memphis in Colorado State. Colorado State, like Nico Medved has
been saying, they're playing their best basketball right now. I
think they're on eleven game winning streak, ten game winning streaks,

(19:58):
something like that, you know, winning the Mountain West Tournament championship.
That was the biggest thing for them to get in
the NC DOUBLEA tournament. And they're playing against a pretty
inconsistent Memphis team. Petty Hardaway has kind of struggled with
that over the years. This is probably his best team
that he's had since he's been there in it's seven
seasons at Memphis. But you know, I think it's an

(20:20):
interesting matchup, and really those twelve seed versus five seed
matchups are kind of toss ups at the end of
the day because you never know what could happen. I mean,
Michigan won last night in a twelve five matchup by
just three points over a team that had never been
to the NC DOUBLEA tournament before. So it's always going
to be a ton of fun. And I think that
one's going to be an interesting one to watch. You know,

(20:42):
Colorado State's a really good team and I think they
can squeak that one out.

Speaker 5 (20:46):
Anyways, Keenan Dixon, Thanks so much for your insight on
the NC.

Speaker 16 (20:50):
Doublea absolutely.
