Coming up on Colorado's Morning News, Education Secretary Linda McMahon
says everything will be done legally when it comes to
dismantling the Department of Education.

Speaker 4 (15:11):
We'll take a look at that coming up next.

Speaker 5 (15:13):
But first, let's take a look at your early Friday
morning drive. We go to Jonathan Steele in the KWA
Traffic Center.

Speaker 3 (15:20):
Yeah, let's look at super out here.

Speaker 16 (15:22):
So far, very light volume building certainly everywhere, but not
much of a drag on speeds anywhere, Boulder turnpikes of

Speaker 6 (15:58):
Kaway News time is five twenty. It is Colorado's Morning News.
Chad Bauer in for Marty Today alongside Gina Gondek. President
Trump has signed an executive order that begins the process
of dismantling the Department of Education.

Speaker 5 (16:13):
Joining us now on the KWA Common Spirit Hall talkline
to talk more about it is ABC News White House
correspondent Karen Travers. Karen, thank you so much for your
time again this morning. Well, getting rid of the Department
of Education entirely would require that Act of Congress in
order to pass. So what does this executive order specifically do?

Speaker 21 (16:31):
Yeah, and that's a very important point that to get
rid of a schedule department altogether, it needs congressional action,
and that also requires sixty votes in the Senate right now,
and that is very unlikely just given the part of
them breakdown. Well, what the President and the Education Secretary
in the White House you're trying to do is essentially
strip down the agency to do it as much as

(16:53):
they can. It was already the smallest cabinet level agency,
but already nearly half of its staff have been laid off,
and now they're saying they're going to take the steps
to shut it down as quickly as possible, as much
as they can. It's important to note here that when
the President and team say, you know, they're sending the
authority back to the States, the Education Department doesn't administer

(17:15):
curriculum or create lessons for students across the country. That
happens at the state and local level, and also most
funding from public schools is provided by state and local governments.
But where this does potentially have an impact is that
the Education Department oversees enforcement of civil rights laws to
prevent discrimination in schools. Funding for low income students and

(17:37):
students with the disabilities comes from the Department of Education,
and the process for college financial aid student loans, which
is obviously very significant to so many Americans, like a
one point six trillion dollar portfolio in total of student loans.

Speaker 6 (17:52):
Aaron I the Press Secretary yesterday said that so called
critical functions will continue. And what did she mean when
she said when she says critical functions?

Speaker 21 (18:01):
So she and then later the President were referring to
funding for low income students, funding for students with disabilities,
and special needs telegrams for college students. Those were all
the things that the White House was citing as things
that would be fully preserved, as the President put it,
and see no disruptions.

Speaker 17 (18:21):
Now.

Speaker 21 (18:21):
What they mean though, by that is that these things
will continue to operate, but not necessarily through the Department
of Education because they have reduced staff significantly and the
authority they will be redistributed to other agencies and departments,
But the White House has not said which ones and
how that would actually work.

Speaker 8 (18:41):
So, Karen, what does this mean on a local level.

Speaker 5 (18:44):
We're talking here in Denver, our district, our teachers, students.
Will you see any immediate impacts in any way if
you work in any type of schools?

Speaker 21 (18:52):
Yeah, I mean it's not clear because you know, you
have to see what ultimately was done at the national
level versus state and local.

Speaker 8 (18:59):
I think some supporters.

Speaker 21 (19:01):
Of this will say it's cutting out red tape and
bureacracy and maybe with less strings attached, state and local
jurisdictions will have more freedom to do what they've wanted
to do in the past but couldn't. But of course
there are concerns on the other side of this that
you know, there's so much uncertainty here and for students

(19:21):
and schools that rely on certain fundings in the Fedral government,
what happens to them?

Speaker 6 (19:26):
Karin, We know that the Republicans are in favor of this,
most Democrats are opposed to it. But when it comes
to the American people, has there been any nationwide polling
done to see what the American people feel about this
particular issue?

Speaker 21 (19:38):
You know, I don't have that at my finger tips.
I'd have to look into that for you.

Speaker 3 (19:42):
It's a good question.

Speaker 5 (19:44):
And Karen, when we look at how lawmakers are responding
to it, have we gotten statements from lawmakers of what
we can expect one it does go forward to congressional
approval in any way?

Speaker 21 (19:54):
Yeah, And like I said, there, it's no surprise Republicans
are plotting this because many have been pushing for this
to happen for a year now. This is a promise
the campaign President's campaign made when he was as a candidate,
something he talked about in his first term but just
didn't go through with Democrats, of course, are ringing alarm
belts about this, including Senator Elizabeth Warren especially saying that
this is going to have devastating impact from students and

(20:17):
districts across the country.

Speaker 6 (20:19):
ABC News White House Correspondent Karen Travers, as always, thank
you so much for joining us.

Speaker 20 (20:24):
You have a great day.

Speaker 4 (20:27):
The news is coming.

Speaker 6 (20:28):
Up next right after we get a check on traffic
from the KOA Traffic Center.

Speaker 4 (20:32):
Here's Jonathan Steele.

Speaker 16 (20:34):
Yeah, pretty quiet for us right now, Chad. Not much
to contend with, certainly here in town. No construction that's
going to hold you up to seventy looks great. E
four seventy. Those are two typical spots that we see
some slow downs, even Penya to and from the airport.
But again, so far, so good.

Speaker 3 (20:49):
Now if you're.

Speaker 16 (20:50):
Heading west, of course, we've had some slowing up Mount
burd and Canyon with construction there up towards Genesee, although
it's not really in a delay mode. But further west,
we are seeing some pretty iffy driving conditions, icy and icy.
I see the Semis are chaining up out of Bakersville.
This is prior to the tunnels and then from there
to Silverthorne. All the way out the vale, it's partially snowpacked,

(21:11):
but it does look a little slow as you're heading
up that way. You want to be extra careful, but
traction laws in place, and that's pretty typical for winter time,
of course at the springtime now, but we're still getting
snow up there here. Everything else is good to go,
no problems. Jonathan Steel on KA eight fifty am and
