ninety four to one FM, and on the iHeartRadio app,
I'm Chad Bauer in for Marty Today alongside Gina Gondek.
Fox thirty one Pinpoint Weather mostly Sunday today, highs in
the mid fifties, tomorrow around sixty five. Little bit cooler
was still very nice on Sunday, a high of sixty.

(00:35):
It is twenty eight in Denver.

Speaker 4 (00:37):
The back and forth between federal immigration officials and Aurora
police is heating up after ICE agents claimed Aurora police
refuse to help them find two men who escaped from
their facility. Police Chief Todd Chamberlain points out the men
walked out around nine thirty Tuesday night, but they weren't
called until two thirty early Wednesday mornings.

Speaker 5 (00:55):
Were they going through their own protocols trying to Oh, man,
I hope these guys aren't really gone.

Speaker 6 (00:59):
I don't know.

Speaker 5 (01:00):
We can't just telepathically think, oh, this must have occurred,
and we're going to drive over there, and when you're
looking at a four and a half to a five
hour time delay that is concerning.

Speaker 4 (01:09):
This happened after a power outage unlock some gates at
the facility. Chief Chamberlain says ICE has not given the
Aurora PD the information they need to help.

Speaker 5 (01:18):
ICE GEO is still not provided essential information. No escape flyers,
no booking photos, no further details. Our detectives reached out
directly with the ICE RRO to try to verify some
of the facts of it. ICE declined to offer to
be involved in this and stated that a APD was
not expected to assist.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
In could escapes.

Speaker 4 (01:36):
The Chief says the outcome may have been different if
ICE had been called, if ICE called them immediately.

Speaker 7 (01:42):
At last reported, the two men are still at large.

Speaker 4 (01:45):
Denver police say they were forced to shoot an armed
man in the Cold neighborhood last night. They received a
call about a man waving a gun in the alley
behind Annunciation Catholic School on North Humbold Street.

Speaker 8 (01:55):
Somebody must have seen him with the weapon or he
must have threatened somebody, And because we did get another.

Speaker 4 (02:00):

drop his gun. The man taken to the hospital and
was last listed in critical condition.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
AOA's David Kale joins us Live to explain.

Speaker 9 (02:14):
It's a response to destructive vandalism that happened early this year.
Decades old trees were set alight and burned. The proposed
solution surveillance of vandals with solar powered cameras mounted near
the pavilion on the park's eastern edge.

Speaker 4 (02:29):
I'm a thousand percent for the cameras life camera action.

Speaker 9 (02:34):
That woman in Cheeseman spoke with Fox thirty one. The
pavilion sits near the back entrance to the Botanic Gardens
with many of the trees and other vegetation. Not everyone
in Cheeseman, though, was supportive of the camera's idea.

Speaker 10 (02:48):
To be honest, the cameras make me a little nervous.
I would rather rely on, you know, fellow people that
are in the park to call if they see an
issue with smoke or fire, rather than feeling like cameras
are watching.

Speaker 9 (03:01):
The city says fires, barbecues and the like are illegal
in the park unless in designated areas. Denver Fire says
its investigation into the Tree Fire's Achievement Park has ended.

Speaker 2 (03:13):

Speaker 11 (03:22):
In December of twenty twenty three, the Colorado Springs Police
were called about a burglary and when they got there
they found a seven and nine year old dead and
another child in the apartment. Their mother, Kimberly Singler, wasn't
arrested at the time because they believed it was a burglary. Eventually,
in a rest warrant was issued for Singler for several charges,
including first degree murder, and she was arrested in the UK.

(03:42):
But now our attorney says the extraditionist unlawful according to
the European Convention of Human Rights. Nea Bender Kowa News.

Speaker 12 (05:40):
Beyond these core necessities, my administration will take all.

Speaker 16 (05:44):
Lawful steps to shut down the department.

Speaker 2 (05:47):
We're going to shut it down.

Speaker 7 (05:48):
And shut it down as quickly as possible. It's doing
us no good.

Speaker 2 (05:51):
We want to return our students to the States.

Speaker 3 (05:54):
Trump says he's confident he will get congressional approval to
eliminate the department entirely. A federal judge demanding answers after
the Trump administration failed once again to answer his questions
about the deportation of migrants to l Salvador.

Speaker 17 (06:09):
Attorneys for the Department replied slightly late two questions about
those flights that deported illegal aliens and gang members last weekend.
The judge accused the Department of evading its obligations by
filing a woefully inaccurate response, adding that he wants more
information within the next five days. This as the President

(06:30):
is urging the Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court,
John Roberts, to curtail the ability of federal judges to
issue nationwide injunctions.

Speaker 4 (06:39):
That's Fox's Kevin Cork, a Louisiana songwriter who goes by
the name Vince Vance and the Valiant, says Mariah Carey.

Speaker 7 (06:46):
Song copies elements of.

Speaker 4 (06:47):
A song with the same name that he wrote in
nineteen ninety.

Speaker 3 (06:51):
Yeah, you can't copyright, you know, Christmas all lyrics, Yeah, and.

Speaker 7 (06:56):
So many things you could say about Christmas time.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
And the melodies don't really make shoppy either.

Speaker 3 (07:00):
Now, coming up in Business and Money News, a slight
delay in some tariffs.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
Pat Word will get us up to date on that.

Speaker 4 (07:07):
Coming up next, Taking a look at your Friday drive,
we go to Jonathan Steel in the KWA Traffic Center.

Speaker 1 (07:14):
Yeah, we're still seeing delays out to the east on
I seventy westbound near Havana. It's all due to a
crash that we had blocking up a couple of lanes.
Initially it's off to the shoulder area, but it is
backed up past Penya almost Tower. In fact, as you're
coming through, we're still seeing quite a bit of a
slow and ghost stop and go through that stretch. Front
end will pick up a little bit. And the other
direction there is some construction near Colefax. This is eastbound seventy,

(07:36):
just a little bit west of the E four seventy interchange.
That tends to back up periodically. It's going to be
a day long project there. Two seventies just a little
heavy through York and I twenty five actually just practically
wide open across the city.

Speaker 15 (07:49):
It's very very light out here.

Speaker 1 (07:51):
You may find just a little bit of slow and
coming into downtown south right around Spear, but it's not
a delay. Jonath Steel on KA eight fifty am and
ninety four ONEFM.

Speaker 4 (08:01):
Thattwitard has more business and money news and a tariff
delay from across the pond, and.

Speaker 8 (08:06):
That means the door is still open at least a
little to maybe defuse the ticking tariff time bomb. The
European Union says it will not impose retaliatory tariffs on
US goods until mid April instead of April first. The
stated goal of the delay is to allow for more
time for negotiations. Having National credit card Debt Reduction Day,

(08:26):
maybe celebrate by not saying.

Speaker 2 (08:28):
This, excuse me while I whip this out.

Speaker 8 (08:32):
There's a good reason not to whip out your credit
card today or on a lot of other days.

Speaker 6 (08:36):
As the Left Care twenty four credit card bounces actually
surpassed one point one seven trillion dollars nationwide, which is
a record, and a lot of that is born out
of the fact that a number of consumers are not
keeping up with the rate of inflation and just the
cost of day to day list.

Speaker 8 (08:52):
Mark Geldman with Strategic Wealth Solutions says credit card debt
is becoming an insurmountable problem for many Americans.

Speaker 7 (09:00):
Friday nights are usually big nights.

Speaker 8 (09:01):
For credit cards use at restaurants that may be changing
based on both prices and on the habits of younger Americans.

Speaker 18 (09:08):
A new study from finance Buzz found in the last
five years, popular chain restaurants hiked their prices by an
average of forty two percent. That's double the national inflation rate.
Labor costs and other factors hitting restaurants bottom lines another
potential factor. More Americans these days are eating alone. One
in four Americans now report eating all of their meals alone,

(09:31):
the number higher among those under age twenty five and
refuge ABC News New.

Speaker 8 (09:36):
York it was one and done for the latest Wall
Street rally.

Speaker 19 (09:39):
The stock market roller coaster is slowing as it rolls
into the end of the week. The Dow Jones on
Thursday slipped eleven points to close back below forty two
thousand s, and p gave up two tenths of one percent.
The Nance Deck composite one third of a percent. FedEx
has lowered it's full year profit and revenue forecasts as
the parcel delivery company battles soft demand around the world
and then serve in the US economy.

Speaker 15 (10:01):
Jim Rillion ABC.

Speaker 8 (10:02):
Hand stock futures due point to losses when we hear
today's opening bell. This update brought to you by the
Never Metro Chamber of Commerce. Our next update is at
seven thirty eight. Pat Woodard KOA Money News.

Speaker 15 (10:15):
In KOA Sports.

Speaker 3 (10:16):
There were a few upsets on the first day of
the NCAA Tournament tenth seed at Arkansas beats seventh seed Kansas.
Eleventh seed at Drake beat sixth seed Missouri, and the
biggest upset of the day was McNeice. They are a
twelve seed and they beat fifth seeded Clemson. In the
Denver games, Wisconsin beat Montana BYU over VCU, Texas A

(10:37):
and M defeated Yale, and in the final game of
the night, it was a good one, Michigan holding off
UC San Diego sixty eight sixty five. That sets up
Saturday's matchups at Ballerina. The first game will be Texas
A and M in Michigan, followed by BYU and Wisconsin.
Twelfth seed at Colorado State today will play their first game.
They take on fifth seed at Memphis in Seattle. Rams

(10:58):
coach Nico Medven I know I'm.

Speaker 16 (11:00):
Biased, but I think this is the greatest sporting event
on Earth. It's what everybody in our business, players, coaches,
you know, dream of being a part of. We've been
fortunate to be here, you know, three the last four years.
They're all really rewarding. This one's incredibly special.

Speaker 3 (11:14):
The Rams have been red hot lately, winning ten games
in a row. In the first round of the WBI
t the top seeded Colorado women cruised pass Southeastern Louisiana
seventy three to forty one.

Speaker 15 (11:26):
Coach j R.

Speaker 20 (11:27):
Pain any team that's winning right now, like every game
that happens, somebody is going home, and there's less teams
throughout the entire country that are still getting to play basketball.
So I'm really proud and excited that we won.

Speaker 3 (11:40):
Colorado will host number four seed Gonzaga Sunday at one o'clock.
Kaway Tournament updates presented by Exfinity Stream Live Sports from
the Best Seat in the House, The Avalanche back in
the win column. They beat the Senators five to one
in Ottawa. Coach Jared Bednar, I'm.

Speaker 15 (11:56):
Really happy with it.

Speaker 2 (11:57):
I've been really happy with the way we play. I
know the game of Toronto, we didn't get the results,
but it was nice to see.

Speaker 21 (12:05):
I'll go in for us.

Speaker 3 (12:06):
The Ads road trip continues tomorrow night. They'll be in
Montreal to play the Canadians and spring training baseball Rockies
beat the Rangers seven to four, play the Angels this afternoon,
and in the NBA the Nuggets in Portland tonight to
play the Blazers. I'm Chad Bauer on the home of
the Broncos, Buffs and Rockies and Kowas Sports this afternoon
at three.

Speaker 4 (12:27):
Denver Maror Mike Johnson will be joining us coming up
in just a minute.

Speaker 7 (12:30):
Here, let's take a look at your drive.

Speaker 4 (12:32):
First, we go to Jonathan Steel and the k WAIT
Traffic Center.

Speaker 1 (12:36):
Yeah, I seventy out to the east side, recovering slowly
due to an axe that we had near Havana well
off to the shoulder.

Speaker 15 (12:42):
It did back up to about Tower.

Speaker 1 (12:44):
There's some slowing in that stretch, but it is starting
to pick up now as you continue west all the
way back to I twenty five.

Speaker 15 (12:50):
The east out side's affected.

Speaker 1 (12:52):
By a construction zone near Colefax that's just west of
B four seventy.

Speaker 15 (12:56):
There are some backups in that area.

Speaker 1 (12:58):
Two seventy running slightly slow out of Commerce City. I
twenty five is a great shape all the way across
the city. Looks like speeds are pretty much on the
high side. Jonath Steele at KOA eight am and ninety
four one FM.

Speaker 4 (13:14):
KOA News Time seven nineteen Gina Gantak and Chad Bauer
Inframarti lens on Colorado's Morning News. A big week in
sports for the Denver area, the NCAA Men's basketball tournament
at Ball Arena and the National Women's Soccer League announcing
their plans to open a new stadium.

Speaker 3 (13:29):
Joining us now to talk about it on the KOA
Common Spirit Health Hotline is Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, mister Mahyra,
thanks as always for joining us, and let's start with
the soccer stadium. Take us through the process of how
it was determined where the stadium would be and what
kind of obstacles did you have to overcome to to
find it.

Speaker 21 (13:49):
Yeah, I really appreciate it. This was a long process
and we couldn't have been more thrilled with how it
turned out, which is, you know, we really wanted the
stadium to be in central Denver. We wanted to be
in a neighbor river, folks could walk up to it.
We wanted it to be accessible to the public so
we could have you know, high school state championship games there,
you could have concerts there. Wanted to be easy to
access by light rail and bike and bus, and so

(14:10):
we were delighted with the spot we've called now Santa
Fe Yards, which is the old Gates Rubber site there
on Broadway and I twenty five, and I remember, you
know that's been empty for about twenty twenty five years now,
and so this is a place where it was kind
of abandoned site in the neighborhood that was laying fallow,
and here was a huge chance to bring a dynamic
investment there that will catalyze more restaurants, more retail, more housing.

(14:33):
And so couldn't have been a more perfect site. We
toured the commissioner to a bunch of different sites around
the city, and this was the one that we all
loved the most, and I think when they saw it,
they fell in love with it. I think it was
a huge part of us winning the bid against the
nineteen other cities who wanted one answer, Maria.

Speaker 7 (14:45):
Two questions for you on this one. You said it first.

Speaker 4 (14:48):
So I want to confirm this that concerts will be
held there. As an avid concert goer, I want to
know if we're getting.

Speaker 7 (14:53):
A new venue come twenty twenty eight.

Speaker 4 (14:55):
We got also knowing all that too, I know concerns
of parking. People are talking about the parking issue and
what we can expect there, So is that being taken
into account.

Speaker 7 (15:03):
When it comes to just the construction of this too,
it is definitely.

Speaker 21 (15:07):
Being taken into account. We will make sure that they'll
be parking there, and again we do love that it's
on public transit. And so I think, as you see
with kind of the ball arena development and others, more
and more now stadiums are moving away from a stadium
with fifty acres of parking lot around it and more
towards you know, walkable, accessible, activated neighborhoods with parking there
connected either in lots or underground or close by. So

(15:28):
there will be parking. But to your very important concert
coct you got to look at the layout because what's
great about this is the whole one end of the
stadium is opened right into a park. So really you
could sit in the park and watch the game, or
you could sit in the park and either you know,
watch the concert or be adjacent to the concert.

Speaker 2 (15:43):
And so it's meant to.

Speaker 21 (15:44):
Really be open to the community in a way that
most stadiums aren't. So yeah, it will be a great
spot for concerts.

Speaker 3 (15:49):
And in addition to that, park Bear Johnston, what are
some of the other things that will be an official
part of this development as opposed to no businesses and
restaurants that might spring up on their own.

Speaker 21 (16:00):
Yeah, I think the key one is, you know, the
site itself will obviously have the stadium, it will have
the park, it'll have obviously we'll have sidewalks and roads
and access points and bridges if we need to. But
I imagine the ownership group is looking to do also
some commercial activity there, so again probably retail and restaurants
and bars. They'll probably do some housing on the site.

(16:23):
We imagine, you know, we will only partner on the
public part of the stadium site. So like other stadium districts,
we want this land under the stadium to be publicly owned,
so that if thirty forty years from now stadium moves
or go someplace else, the city always gets back the
land and the public does. But what they do in
the private development day have proposals. They would include restaurants, bars, housing,

(16:46):
some office space to just help activate the neighborhood.

Speaker 7 (16:48):
As Samara, I'm going to pivot topics here.

Speaker 4 (16:50):
A story that's coming out of Aurora gaining national attention.

Speaker 7 (16:53):
This week.

Speaker 4 (16:53):
You released a statement following the ice detainment of immigration
rights activist Jenetfazgara, saying that her detainment.

Speaker 7 (17:00):
Is not about safety.

Speaker 4 (17:01):
This is putin style persecution of political dissidents now. An
ICE spokesperson also said that she was a convicted criminal.

Speaker 7 (17:08):
Alien from Mexico.

Speaker 4 (17:09):
A final order of deportation was issued by a federal
immigration judge who illegally entered the United States in nineteen
ninety seven. Very contrasting reports here of her statement of
what we've seen so far, what's your response.

Speaker 21 (17:22):
Yeah, my response is, you know, we have been really
clear on we are going after violent criminals. We are
targeting them, We're arresting them, We're helping get them to port.
If you have gang members, we are all in to
find that. That is not of what janettas. That was
a married mom with two US inisten kids, working at Target,
you know, who runs a local nonprofit. She's been here
for twenty years. She is not part of the new
wave of arrivals. But what makes her remarkable is she

(17:44):
is a high profile public leader. I mean, she's the
only person in Denver I know who is on the
one hundred most Influential People in America list of Time magazine. Right,
she's an outspoken advocate for immigration reform. I don't have
to agree with all of her policies. That doesn't give
me the right to arrest her and detainer or to deport.
And so you know, her only real crime was crossing
the border without proper documents, and so there are twelve

(18:05):
million people in the US that meet that criteria. But
this was clearly targeted at someone because of her political
views and because of her political platform, and I think
that's very, very different than immigration enforcement.

Speaker 3 (18:15):
Hey, switching topics again, Mary Johnston, I'm not sure if
you have seen the report is just issued by the
Denver Auditor showing some concern about tracking expenses related to
homeless programs. Have you seen that and if so, what
is your response to that.

Speaker 21 (18:32):
I haven't seen it. I spoke with the auditor this
week and he didn't raise that, but I'm always happy
to look at it. We are very tightly aware of
our accounting on all of our programs, particularly on our
homeless programs. As people know, we've actually reduced our spending
on homelessness this year as we've had real success getting
twenty three hundred people off the street into transitional housing.

(18:53):
We've now become the largest city in America that has
ended the cycle of street homelessness for veterans. And so
what we've always said is doing this both serves people
better and also saves the city more money. So we're
we're very excited that we're heading in the right direction
on both reducing homelessness and reducing costs. But always be
happy to look for whatever they auditor puts out.

Speaker 4 (19:10):
Yeah, the excitement of March madness at Ball Arena last night.
Talk a little bit about just the economic development that
we've seen from having it here in our city, and
address a little bit of some of the concerns when
it comes to safety and just more people around downtown
during this time.

Speaker 21 (19:25):
Yeah, we were actually were delighted about it. I stopped
by there last night for a little while. It was
full house. People were frantic and excited. Yeah, you know,
this already has driven about sixteen million dollars of economic
development into Denver, and we love it for just that reason.
If you're walking through downtown, you're going to see walking
everyone cruiser now with Wisconsin sweatshirts, or with Michigan sweatshirts,
or Texas A and M. So they're all in our restaurants,

(19:47):
staying at our hotels and so we're thrilled to have
this kind of travel. We want more of it. We'd
love to have the Final Four back again. I remember
I went to when I was a kid in the
Final Four was in Denver. So we love these kind
of activations. You're going to see a lot more of
these kind of big events coming. We're working on a
lot of them around the clock right now.

Speaker 3 (20:03):
And speaking of that, mister Mayor, do you think Denver's
in a good spot to draw some of those big events?
Are there some things that need to be done to
make it even more attractive to organizers?

Speaker 21 (20:14):
I know, I think we've been great at hosting these
kind of events, and we want to do more of them,
you know, whether that's from everything from you know, whether
it's IndyCar whether it's Rugby World Cup, whether it's future
you know, Frozen four tournaments or NC Double A or
we'd love to host the Four Nations Cup sometime. The
hockey tournament we just saw with the US Canada games
that were great. So I think it is very clear
Denver's one of the great sports towns in the world

(20:35):
and we're great at hosting events, and so we think
we have a real natural advantage here because people would
love to come here. So we we're going to trying
to leverage that as much as we can to get
a lot of great events here.

Speaker 4 (20:44):
Denver Mayor, Mike Johnson, mister Mayor, thanks for your time
as always, and I'm sorry about your Yale Bulldogs there
last night.

Speaker 21 (20:51):
I know you can't get lucky twice Maybet Auburn last year,
I probably was my back. It's already busted. But pulling
for CFC Memphis today is my next big upsets. I
think I'm believing in that one.

Speaker 2 (21:01):
Thank you so much.

Speaker 21 (21:01):
Have a go one, jot Chelson.

Speaker 7 (21:05):
Let's go now to the Koa Traffic Center. Here's Jonathan Steel.

Speaker 1 (21:09):
Yeah, we're still looking very good, lighter than normal out here.
It's been that way all week and we had the
one accident at Havana. That's all cleared. A little slow
steal from penyage. You make your way through. It's not
a solid gem, just a little sluggish along the way.
Two seventy continues to heavy up a little bit there
out of Commerce City Bolt directions and further east on
I seventy out near the Coalfax interchange. Just prior to

(21:30):
E four seventy. Still have some delays. That is construction
that was set up, so we're looking at backups there
and that definitely will cost you a little bit of time.
Two two five heading around Parker's just a little slow.
That picks up nicely heading into I twenty five and
I twenty five looks pretty good for the most part.
There's some slowing heading south coming into downtown. Jonathan Steel
