Speaker 1 (00:00):
Baba, do do Do Do Do Do. Hey, y'all, it's
Denise's podcast.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Time to feature another influencer. My influencer of the week
is Elizabeth Georgio. She's been a lifelong friend. We've been
friends for what fifteen twenty years?
Speaker 1 (00:16):
Yeah, long, long time, long time.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
You've been my stylist of to my hair for probably
fifteen years. That's how I met you.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
I know, I'm a lucky girl.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
I'm a lucky girl, and you know what's crazy, though,
sometimes I think you want to kill me. I would
if I were you, because I come in and I'm
like short hair, long hair, red, black, blonde, brown. I
have been every color of the rainbow except like pink
or blue, those crazy colors.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
I know it's fun though, I like to switch it up.
Speaker 2 (00:46):
What do I say to you? Whenever? Sometimes I'll say
never again, don't let me do it.
Speaker 1 (00:51):
The last thing was don't ever let me do bangs,
and I think that was a couple of years ago,
and then recently you were like, how about curtain bangs?
Speaker 2 (00:57):
Like are you sure I talked you into it?
Speaker 1 (01:00):
I love them good and really get it anyway. Yeah,
so you can pull anything off.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
Oh you're Sweetheart Elizabeth do Georgio, do Georgio. Gosh, I
keep slurry Georgio to GEORGEO from Story Bricks Salon, you're
really an entrepreneur. You own Story Bricks Salon. You also
do makeup, and you also own your own hat business,
which is Ella James Hattery.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
I do. I try to do a little bit of
all so I don't get bored.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
Gosh, you have a cute little hat on right now.
Snow today.
Speaker 1 (01:27):
It did snow for snow. That's why I put a
little snowflake on there.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
It's so cute. You custom make these hats too, I.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
Do, Okay, this one has fleece on the inside, and
then I make all sorts of other hats as well.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
I'm going to steal that off your head.
Speaker 1 (01:39):
You can take it.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
So I tried to do my best, but I think
it's it's better if you kind of explain everything you do.
You're multifaceted.
Speaker 1 (01:46):
Yeah, So I own the Story Brick. I have worked
there for about eight years and two years ago I
ended up buying it. And at the Story Brick, I
do hair and makeup. It's four chairs, so it's super
cute boutique salon. I also do hat so I make
snow hats, derby hats, cowboy hats, the door hats, baseball hats,
whatever you want. I try to say. I can make
all of your hat dreams come true. So if you
(02:07):
want a custom hat, give me a call.
Speaker 2 (02:10):
You know that bling blink cowboy hat that I wear
if you see me at any concert. Elizabeth made it
for me, which I get so many compliments.
Speaker 1 (02:17):
They're so fun. And I also do ski helmets so
you don't get lost on the mountain.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
I saw the Bronco one that you made.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
It so funny, cute.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
Now owning in the salon and a hat business, why
don't are you ever going to combine the two?
Speaker 1 (02:28):
Yes? Actually for the holidays, so starting by actually by Thanksgiving,
I will open a hat pop up downstairs so you
can shop hats Thanksgiving Christmas, and I will keep it
open through the stock show. But hopefully it ends up
being a thing. But right now it'll just be like
a cute little hat boutique downstairs.
Speaker 2 (02:46):
Yeah, this will be a thing.
Speaker 1 (02:47):
It will.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
I'd all right, I love it. And so you are
going to do hat parties or holiday parties at your salon?
Speaker 1 (02:53):
Yes, so on Sundays and Mondays. When the salon is closed,
you can rent out the space. It's super cute right
and low high behind Avanti, so you can rent it
out for holiday parties, hat parties, whatever you want to do,
and then we'll open up for more times if those
go well.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
And with my influencer of the week, I always choose
a different influencer. And I looked at your Instagram page
or Facebook page, but really, Instagram, you are so good
at posting and making different reels and post it's so pretty.
So if you want to see some of her hats,
tell us your Instagram.
Speaker 1 (03:26):
It's The Joyful Blonde, and so I just kind of
post everything I do there. I have one for my salon,
I have one for my hat. But if you really
want to see everything I do, go to The Joyful Blonde.
Speaker 2 (03:36):
A Joyful Blonde. And let's talk about celebrities, because you
have been to I mean so many different events, including
the Kentucky Derby, and you've made a lot of hats
for many different celebrities. What's the biggest one you've ever made?
Speaker 1 (03:50):
So, Ruba McIntyre, I made her a cowboy hat and
it's so funny because I brand people's initials on the
cowboy hat and I was trying to act cool when
I met her, and so she told me initials and
I grabbed the R and the M, not thinking anything
of it because I was so nervous. And then it
turned out she wanted like R in another initial and
I was like, oh my gosh, I'm so sorry, let
me redo it. She's like, oh no, Darlin, like those
(04:11):
are my initials, you know. And she was just so sweet.
And I met her husband, Rex and took a photo
with her. So she was so awesome. But at the
Derby this year, my hats were also next to Travis
Kelce went on a.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
Writer, Wow, a lot of yeah, a.
Speaker 1 (04:25):
Lot of a lot of really awesome people. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
And if you want to see the coolest Kentucky Derby,
pick with her hats, go to the Joyful Blonde. Talk
about the reality show. You and I discussed this privately,
but I think it's worth sharing.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
Yeah, So we were going to do a reality show.
Was going to follow five women in their thirties that
are entrepreneurs and what it takes to be a business
and have a family, and all of the things didn't
end up getting picked up. But I still think it's
a great idea.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
I do too.
Speaker 1 (04:51):
At the time, my marriage was kind of falling apart,
so it was maybe not the best timing, but it
keeps coming back to my mind. So I'm like, hey,
if someone wants to do a TV show, let's.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
Do let's do it. You and I should spin that off.
Speaker 1 (05:02):
I love it.
Speaker 2 (05:02):
Okay, I'm gonna work on it with you. Since you
do so many multiple things and you own so many
multiple businesses, what is that like, You're a hustler, You're
always on the go.
Speaker 1 (05:12):
Yeah, I feel like I learned from the best like you.
But I you know, I just don't ever like to
get bored. I'm not one that likes to stay home
and you know, watch TV. So I'm always kind of
thinking of the next best business venture. And it's just
so fun, you know. I have a lot of fun
with what I do, and so I feel like I'm
really lucky to enjoy my work.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
You're also a mom too, a cute little Ella.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
Yes, little nine year old Ella. She's the joy of
my life. Like, I love her so much, and you know,
I feel like I'm teaching her what it takes to
be a hard worker and That's what I know I
have is the work ethic, and so I try to
incorporate that with her. I can't wait till I can
hire her to help me.
Speaker 2 (05:50):
It's gonna be cool, I know.
Speaker 1 (05:52):
And the hat company is named after her because I
think in my perfect world she it would become so
big that she would just take it over and enjoy
doing it as much as I do.
Speaker 2 (06:00):
You are so inspiring. I watch you and then you're like,
guess what I'm gonna do? Get and to see, I mean,
what you've accomplished over the years that I've known you.
And the story about the Kentucky Derby, that's incredible. Can
we jump to that?
Speaker 1 (06:14):
Oh man? So I ben twice. But my first year
was really the Cinderella story. I went the week before
not having a ticket to the Derby, and I made
these hats out of my Airbnb I rented, and you know,
there were feathers everywhere, flowers everywhere, and I was just
hustling to all of the hotels. I made friends with
the bartenders at one of the hotels and they wore
my hats and sold them for me. I gave them
twenty percent if they sold a hat, and so they
(06:34):
would text me, Elizabeth, we need more hats. And then
it was the day before the Kentucky Derby. I sold
two hats or no, I traded two hats in a
headband for a front row ticket to the Kentucky Derby.
And this therapy horse came like right up to my hand.
And you'll see the picture on my Instagram guest picture.
And it was like, I planned it, but you can't
plan things like that. And I just had that moment
where I was like, oh my gosh, if you work
(06:55):
hard enough and you really want something, you could kind
of have anything you want.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
Yeah, you made it happens. Yeah, you have to believe
in your believe in yourself. The hat that you're wearing, oh,
it's to die for. And you made that buy yourself
at home.
Speaker 1 (07:08):
I did it just I lay there at night and
I have these ideas and then I go to my
garage where is my hat shop, and I make it
and I'm really happy that other people like them as well.
Speaker 2 (07:19):
Like the hat you're wearing today, it's so dangank you.
Speaker 1 (07:21):
I think I will give you this.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
No, no, we're going to take a picture. You're not
going to give it to me first. Off, No, I'm
going to buy it, but I'll buy a different one,
so because that looks too pretty on you, thank you.
But we'll take a picture and then you can see
it if you go to one oh six seven the
Bull or at Denise Plant Denver or the Joyful Blonde,
you'll see the picture of us together. What are you
working on now? Because I know like you're going back
and forth with the hats, with the salon with makeup.
(07:45):
What are you doing now?
Speaker 1 (07:46):
I kind of go where, like you know, the lowest
hanging fruit is that week, So right now I am
working on opening that hat shop at the salon by Thanksgiving.
And then now with the snow I'm kind of inspired
to make more of these snow hats and you'll also
be able to buy those at the story Brick and
also on my Etsy page. You can also actually access
my Etsy page from the story Brick's website. There's a
(08:07):
link there that says hats. So I'm trying to just
make it all in one place so I'm not running around.
I think that's what I'm working on is to concise.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
What's the name of your Etsy page?
Speaker 1 (08:17):
It's Ella James Hattery, but there is a link to
it on the story Brick website.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
Okay, Ella, James Hattery and how much does that hat
that you have?
Speaker 1 (08:25):
This one? I you know this one has real fer
I can make them with faux fur. So with the relfer.
These ones I was selling for like one fifty, but
I feel like in Colorado those are a little high.
They have like the fleece on the inside. So I'm
pretty sure this year I'm going to sell them for
eighty five and then the ones with the faux fur
will be like fifty five.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
They're so worth plus you bejewel it like you put
different unique you sew them on different unique items or
jewels to make it pop and stand out exactly.
Speaker 1 (08:53):
Yeah, this one's a broach, so you can switch them out.
I have all sorts of pretty brooches, but I've also
used family heirlooms like whatever you want to do.
Speaker 2 (09:01):
But yeah, I like to add the little sparkles. So
I can't wait for you guys to see the picture.
You're going to see what I'm talking about. It's so
so beautiful. But you're going to continue making Derby hats
as well.
Speaker 1 (09:10):
I will, Yeah, maybe at a smaller scale, or I
might combine forces with somebody else me doing it alone.
I learned that this year is I can't do stuff alone.
And I think that's an important lesson, Like you can
try to do it alone as long as you can,
but it's really better when you work with other people.
Speaker 2 (09:24):
Let's talk about if somebody's listening and they are thinking,
I want to do this, I want to be like Elizabeth,
you're a small business owner. What would you tell other
business owners or someone wanting to get started when it's difficult,
when it's hard and it's trying times.
Speaker 1 (09:37):
Absolutely Number one, don't give up because you're going to
want to many times. Like I'll be on the floor
crying sometimes and then I'm like, all right, that's it,
Like it's time to get up and make it happen.
And then you have not because you ask not like say,
you know, asking you shall receive. My dad taught me
that at a young age, and a lot of things
that I have, it's because I ask for them right
at the right time. You know, you don't want to
(09:57):
be like annoying. But if you see your shot, you
you shoot it right, oh for and take it. And
then I think you want to expect miracles to happen.
You know, there's like the Derby for example, Like I
had no idea how I was going to get there,
but I knew. I knew in my knower. I know,
I knew in my knower that it was going to happen.
So just believe in yourself. Yeah, I mean all those
things combined.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
But would you say I knew in my know w.
Speaker 1 (10:20):
Yeah, there's this church. I would there's this pastor and
he said it was the funniest thing and it stuck
with me years ago, and he's like, you got to
know in your knower, Like you know, I.
Speaker 2 (10:29):
Lost that I knew in my knower.
Speaker 1 (10:32):
Yeah, like I tell you hashtag. Yeah, I just knew
what's going to happen, and it did. And then I
was like kind of surprised, but not because but it
happened so much better than I even anticipated.
Speaker 2 (10:44):
So if you go to the story Brick salon, you're
also going to see Ella James Hattery because soon you're
going to have that combined business exactly, so all your
hair done, you can get your hat if you want to.
Speaker 1 (10:54):
Yeah, that's my goal is to have it all in
one place.
Speaker 2 (10:57):
You ship to other states, too, don't you I do.
Speaker 1 (11:00):
Yeah, And I would like to say I'll ship you know,
it's a different countationwide, worldwide. Yeah, but yeah, I ship everywhere.
Speaker 2 (11:07):
Okay, perfect? And why do you call yourself the joyful blonde?
I know the answer, But if somebody's thinking the joyful blonde,
wait until you see her.
Speaker 1 (11:15):
First off, well, thank you. I have been through a
lot of struggles in my forty years, and I think,
you know, it's important. I know people can take away
your happiness, like certain things can even happen, you know,
throughout the day to like, oh that doesn't make me happy.
But I don't think anybody can steal your joy. That's
something that you're like, you have like rooted in you.
And so actually I got a tattoo on my arm
(11:36):
during the pandemic to remind myself to always be joyful.
Speaker 2 (11:39):
Let me see what did you get?
Speaker 1 (11:40):
Joyful?
Speaker 2 (11:41):
Oh my god, that's awesome. I love that.
Speaker 1 (11:44):
It's funny because you see it when I'm doing here
in makeup, in the mirrors, and then you see it
on the like all the videos that people take of
me making the hats. Oh, so it's funny.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
I love that.
Speaker 1 (11:54):
It's just a good reminder, and she has.
Speaker 2 (11:56):
These this beautiful blonde on air and this beautiful smile.
I mean you do think of joy when you see her?
Speaker 1 (12:02):
Thank you really do.
Speaker 2 (12:04):
So can we make appointments at the same time for
hair and hats.
Speaker 1 (12:07):
Yes, So if you go to the story brick dot com,
you will go to my I'm like the Blonde girl
and it says owner Elizabeth, and you can book me
at that link, and then it will have all my
hair appointments, all my hat appointments or makeup appointments, and
then at the bottom you'll see a hat appointment, so
it's again all the same place.
Speaker 2 (12:25):
Do you also do weddings?
Speaker 1 (12:26):
I do. I don't do him as much anymore, but
I still enjoy doing them. So I do hair and
makeup for weddings. I think it's beneficial that I do both, right,
and so yeah, you can also book me for your wedding.
Speaker 2 (12:36):
And if you've seen any of my head shots, we
get them done at the Denver Headshots Tommy call your
does mine? Aaron is wonder He's amazing. Yeah, they're both amazing,
and she does my hair and my makeup in order
to get professional headshots done. So if you're looking for
a professional headshot. Make sure you contact Elizabeth too at
The Joyful Blonde or Thestorybrick dot com. It's the story
(12:59):
Brick at the Joyful Blonde or Ella James Hattery Perfect.
The long hair that I have now are hair extensions.
So quickly before I let you go, I need to
talk to you about maybe some of the hairstyles that
are going to be hot for fall and winter. What
are you suggesting? So?
Speaker 1 (13:15):
I think most people go darker and like maybe add
in some like pumpkin spice highlights, you know, like that
red color is coming back. But you also see the
cute bobs right now, Like I cut that a couple
of years ago, and I'm kind of thinking about doing
it again.
Speaker 2 (13:28):
You're gonna cut your hair, I don't know, maybe not.
I haven't seen you with short hair. I don't think. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (13:32):
I was like, oh, it was a while ago. I
did not keep it very long.
Speaker 2 (13:35):
I don't like it.
Speaker 1 (13:36):
But that's what's fun with extensions too. It's like you can.
Speaker 2 (13:38):
Go you know, short, long, short lunch like I do.
Speaker 1 (13:41):
Yeah, and then you know, if you also want to
do updue for the holidays or something like that, you
can see me for that as well. For all your
holiday parties.
Speaker 2 (13:49):
You mentioned pumpkin spice for the hair. Now, we were
talking about going a little darker with me, maybe some
blonde around my face. Do you think I should throw
in pumpkins spice?
Speaker 1 (13:56):
I mean that could be fun. Yeah, like adding some
little like a cop cinemonio.
Speaker 2 (14:01):
I like that.
Speaker 1 (14:02):
I like doing a lot of colors on you because
in all of the lighting and everything, it's pretty to
see the dimension.
Speaker 2 (14:07):
And if you're not sure what to do, she's great.
She's worked on so many different clients, including men. It's
not just women.
Speaker 1 (14:14):
Absolutely. I would say fifty percent of my clients are men.
So you can come in and get your haircut.
Speaker 2 (14:19):
All right at the story Brick Salon again the storybrick
dot Com, the storybrick dot Com, or at the Joyful Blonde.
Thank you, Alisabeth, Good Georgio, thank you for having me.
