Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Faith in the Zone. I'm the Big nine
twenty in your iHeart Radio app I Mike mcgiffrin flyin
Sola this week. Pastor Ken Keltner from Brookside Baptist Church
will join me back in studio next week. We're coming
from the Donovan and Jorganson Heating and Cooling studios. We
got to get those boys in one of the studios
here is really cold. Trust me when I tell you this.
(00:22):
Look into their maintenance program. My daughter Katie and her
husband John, my son Matthew and his wife Kiara, and
my wife Tera and I are all part of the
maintenance program with Donavan and Jorgans and Heating and Cooling
a lot of benefits to be part of that program.
So we don't have Ken Keltner in studio with me,
but don't worry about it. We have the Keltners. We
have the oldest boy. We have not had the oldest
(00:45):
boy with us before. A big fan of Kyle Keltner,
his wife, Kayla, and Kyle. I gotta tell you first
of all, it's good to see you. How are you? Yeah?
Doing great? I thought when I called and asked you
to come in and you and your wife to come in.
I thought you and I would be spending most of
the time talking about stuff between you and I because
(01:05):
I've only met Kayla twice, and then I did some
research on your wife, and I may not even talk
to you the whole time. That's why that right now, Kayla,
it's so nice to meet you. How are you doing well?
How are you so Kayla? I am so impressed. First
of all, you have the most beautiful kids. We had
dinner together and I got a chance to hang out
(01:26):
with the countner Klan. Everybody but Kurt came to town.
And you have beautiful kids and they're so well behaved.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
Thank you so much.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
I am so impressed with you as a student that
I can't I'm just like you have major environmental science
correct yes, minors in chemistry, biology, astronomy, and then because
you just like being challenged, you and back and during
the same time when you got a degree in Spanish.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
Yes, yeah, like who's the that's smart?
Speaker 1 (02:01):
Like you got to help me with this. Did you
like being in the library? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (02:05):
I did, I did, I did. Yeah. I always liked
going to school and was very studious, and it just
came quite naturally to me. I guess or easier.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
Well, I'm wondering because here's my favorite line that I read.
I enjoyed challenging studies, so adding added Spanish as a
second major and completed all these studies, making the deans
list in four full years.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:30):
Were you a really good high school student as well?
I was? Yes? Where did you go to college?
Speaker 2 (02:36):
I went to Marywood University in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
Speaker 1 (02:39):
What made what made? And did you grow up in Pennsylvania?
Speaker 2 (02:42):
I did? Yeah?
Speaker 1 (02:43):
And so what about Marywood University drew your interest to
go there?
Speaker 2 (02:48):
Well, if I'll be completely honest, my mom got a
job there. We didn't have a lot of money, so
she sacrificed so much time and her very early mornings
and started work in there as a cleaning lady so
my sister and I could go there. What is your
mom's name, Christine Trojani, Christina tried?
Speaker 1 (03:07):
You know what? Thank you, thank you? And here's what
I love is there are there are certain people that
I've met throughout my life, and I'm an old grandfather
of six, that when they are given a gift, they
don't take full advantage of the gift. You, my dear
you took one hundred percentful advantage of this gift that
(03:28):
your mom worked so hard, and that it's I'm always
really impressed with really good student student athletes and then
students that have that servant leadership heart. And we're going
to get into that. But that's something that you obviously have.
You have. It's something that you are not born with,
but it's a learned behavior. And I think I know
(03:49):
this answer. But you know, you were part of a
lot of clubs in this society and the language club
and giving back with pugwash whatever that is. But you
that servant leadership part, you learned it from I guess
your mom. R.
Speaker 2 (04:04):
Yes, yeah, what.
Speaker 1 (04:06):
A cool thing to learn from somebody. Yeah, man, why
why did you put your hands with the part?
Speaker 2 (04:11):
I can't believe that you like know all those things.
Speaker 1 (04:15):
Look all the culntners, including cler I'll kick their coverage
by a mile, right, Their wives are too good looking
for them, and they do great things. And then I
do this research on you and I'm just so I'm
so impressed. Ky, you did good boy, You're not bad,
not bad for a cultner right there.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
Yeah, it took me took me long enough, thirty years
thirty years, thirty years to find her, well, well, until
we got married.
Speaker 1 (04:41):
At that was a thirty How did you guys meet?
Speaker 3 (04:43):
So we met at church, believe it or not. We
I started going and this was a I moved up
to Scranton, and that was back twenty fifteen ish around then.
Speaker 1 (04:59):
And so what Scranton did you go? Coach?
Speaker 3 (05:01):
That was when I was coaching. I was coaching at
Clark sum University and started getting plugged into a church.
Guys that were graduated from Clark Summit planted a church
there in Scranton. Not a whole lot of you know,
churches that were up in that area. So there's two
or three to choose from. I picked this one, and
I saw Kayla and was kind of interested. So we
(05:23):
ended up actually singing in the choir. And you know, me,
I shouldn't be anywhere near a microphone when I heard her.
Speaker 1 (05:31):
Dad singing, if you got I was by a nun
in fourth grade that I was tone deaf and I
should never sing. My senior crosser didn't want to hear
me sing. She didn't want to hear me sing, and
baby Jesus didn't want to hear me sing. And I
said but he's everywhere. She said, exactly, I envy anybody
that can sing.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
That's hilarious.
Speaker 1 (05:52):
That was that was me. I don't sing much of
Bergs Guide either, but you joined the choir. So we
stand next to her a little bit.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
No, they put me on the other side. So, Kayla,
is you know a good musician? She plays a couple
of instruments and sings and writes some writes some music.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
And so.
Speaker 3 (06:11):
Shortly after that we we met, and believe it or not,
I'm I'm not great with names, but I forgot her
name the first time.
Speaker 1 (06:18):
She index you and ask.
Speaker 3 (06:21):
She and she introduced herself to me, and every week,
you know, we'd see each other and she says, Kyle,
how you doing? And I had to do the whole
hey you, how are you? And so I'm like, it's
been a couple of weeks. I can't go and say
I forgot your name?
Speaker 1 (06:38):
What you know?
Speaker 3 (06:39):
So it was kind of that point was already passed.
I was like, I don't know what I'm gonna do. Luckily,
one of her friends said, hey, Kayla, Okay, that's it,
and then I then I went in and said, hey Kayla,
how are you doing it? And we uh talked for
a little while, and then shortly after we went on
our first date, which that's a good story, but.
Speaker 1 (06:59):
Yeah, you didn't go so well.
Speaker 3 (07:00):
Oh the first date was great, No, it was can
I tell this story?
Speaker 1 (07:03):
She's look, this is the most time I've spent with Kayla,
and I adore her. I want her to play poker
with me because I'm the right away if she's got
a good and you can you.
Speaker 3 (07:16):
Can, you can fill you can fill in where I miss.
So we ended up going on a variety of different trips,
and she grew up hunting. You know, my dad we
didn't you know, we didn't hunt for anything. So his
his version of hunting was going in the grocery store.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
So good.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
Yeah, So we started ended up talking about different things
and trips that we've been on because we went on
a lot of missions trips. And so she says, hey,
my was it your dad that shot a bear?
Speaker 2 (07:44):
Or yeah, I was in a hunting club, so I
was in a Turkey federation.
Speaker 1 (07:49):
So anyway, so you sing, you're a musician, you're it
gets it.
Speaker 3 (07:57):
Gets, it gets better. So anyway, I go her she said, hey,
I got some left over.
Speaker 1 (08:03):
Pheasants. So she just shot pheasant.
Speaker 2 (08:06):
Peasants just ended and family.
Speaker 3 (08:09):
She's had some birds. She's like, hey, I'm going to
cook them up. Why don't you come over? I said, yeah,
that's great. So I get up to her her place
and there's you know, introducing ourselves and you know, kind
of getting to know each other. And so right in
the kitchen, I see a couple of trash backs. I say, oh, hey,
these are your you know, trash. I'll take them out,
(08:30):
you know, trying to earn some brownie points and things.
She goes, no, those are dead pheasant had had enough
time to pluck them yet. I go, oh, all right,
well we'll just leave them there.
Speaker 1 (08:38):
Then helped him with that.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
So she's cooking pheasant. We sit down and eat. I'm
about three bites in. She says, oh, be careful. You know,
we shot these and I tried my best to clean
out all the bebies, but there might be a bebe
in there. I thought, oh no, I probably already swallowed
a couple. I'm gonna break a tooth. I'm gonna have
to go, you know, to the dentist at root.
Speaker 1 (09:00):
I didn't.
Speaker 3 (09:00):
That was the one time I lost my appetite.
Speaker 1 (09:02):
And you know us.
Speaker 3 (09:02):
We we we eat yeah a lot.
Speaker 2 (09:05):
So it was fine. There was no.
Speaker 1 (09:07):
No, no, no babes.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
So we we we were talking and we're I see
the shotgun in the corner. She goes, hey, do you mind.
You know, we're sitting down in the living room. She goes, hey,
do you mind if I clean my shotgun while we talk?
I go, I'm not going to stop you. You're holding
the shotgun.
Speaker 1 (09:23):
What am I gonna say? I don't help it? Oh?
Speaker 3 (09:27):
Yeah, we yeah, yeah we had some you know where
we had yeah, up north Yeah, up and up in Northland. Yeah,
we shot some guns up there, just not with my dad.
But uh so she cleans her gun.
Speaker 1 (09:40):
We talk. I mean we talked for you know, three hours.
It was real easy.
Speaker 3 (09:44):
I remember leaving and I thought, you know what, if
things don't work out with this with this girl, I
gotta be real careful how.
Speaker 1 (09:50):
I end in this.
Speaker 3 (09:51):
Otherwise I'm going to end up dead in the trash
bag somewhere the.
Speaker 1 (09:55):
Zone and tell anybody where you were. Guys, that's a
great story, and thank you for sharing that. We're gonna
get to a quick break. We're gonna we're gonna end
the first segment a little early because we're gonna ask
both Kayla and Kyle Kultner to share their testimony with
us in the second segment. Kyle is now the owner
of Soccer Shots in Augusta, Georgia, and Kayla Virtual Administrative Consultants.
Speaker 2 (10:20):
I used to do that, to do.
Speaker 1 (10:21):
That, that's where I got this from. Well, now you
guys are busy and we're going to talk about that.
And Kyle he coached at Clark's Summit University as a
soccer coach for a number of years. They're now living
in Augusta, Georgia and doing some really good work in
that community, and we'll continue our conversation with them on
the other side of the break. This is Faith in
the Zone on the Big nine twenty in your iHeart
(10:43):
Radio App. Welcome back to Faith in the Zone on
the Big nine twenty in your iHeart Radio App by
Mike mcgifrin, flying solo this week, coming from the Donovan
and Jorganson Heating and Cooling Studios. Having fun on this show.
Any chance I get to talk, can hang out with
with any of the Keltner boys. It's good for me.
(11:04):
I laughed through the whole thing and we're joined in
studio by Kyle and Kayla Keltner. Kyle is the oldest
boy of the four Keltner boys, and we talk about
the boys a lot on faith in the Zone, and
we talk about Kyle and and Kevin and Keith and
Kurt quite a bit. We've not had a chance to
have Kyle on the show, and I'm so we feel
(11:25):
blessed at him and his wife are in town and
willing to come in studio. Guys, the second segment for
us is the one that we get we get most
response on, and we ask our guests to share their testimony.
And Kyle, I'm gonna start with you, if you would
be so kind. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (11:41):
So obviously we grew up going to church. We were
there anytime the church doors were open. And my dad
has been in ministry for a long time, ever since
I can remember, and always been around church. Made a
profession of faith when I was young, maybe four or five,
and you know, I had a lot of confidence until
(12:02):
that point, and then probably in the teen years anywhere
from eighth grade to ninth grade, I really starting to question,
you know, was I old enough? Did I you know,
did I did I say the right prayer? You know,
is because it was so long ago, and so there
was a message that was that was spoken. I said, hey,
if you have any doubt once you kneeled down.
Speaker 1 (12:24):
I had doubt.
Speaker 3 (12:24):
So I went down to my youth pastor's house and
we just you know, right, And there wasn't anything special
about the prayer. It's just about putting your faith and
trust on the Lord. And so at that point, you know,
I would say I affirmed the belief and since then,
so that was probably I think freshman year.
Speaker 1 (12:42):
Okay, so probably fourteen something like that. Yeah, you know,
your dad will say a lot and you talked about
the early years four and five and then your teen years,
and I envy you. I envy I envy younger people
because I did that. Wasn't me right, I was. I
took a lot. I'm one hundred percent irish. You know.
(13:03):
I'm a little stubborn and I did a lot of things.
And I was born and raised through Catholic schools, and
these nuns would hand me the Bible and say, don't
open it, we'll tell you what's in it. And somebody
gave us this line on faith in his own but
I agree with it that I knew Jesus Christ the
same way I knew Abraham Lincoln, right, I know all
the stories. I didn't have any kind of relationship with him,
(13:25):
and so I envy people. And your dad will say,
you know, the Lord has made it so easy that
even a child can understand it. Now, if they're going
to understand it and then stay grounded from the time
there four, five and six, I don't know if anybody
does that. I think people question it. And I love
the fact how that you were smart enough and strong
(13:47):
enough to be able to say, look, that's me, because
a lot of people would be look, I'm embarrassed. I
don't want anybody to see that I'm raising my hand
or I'm kneeling down. And for you to go to
a youth pastor and say, look, I need to talk
to you about this. I just think that shows maturity
beyond your years at that point. And I love the
fact that, Look, anytime I talk to you, or I
(14:09):
look on a website or I see you on andy,
it's you aren't you are not ashamed, you are not
you are Look, this is who I am, and and
this is important and I want to be able to
spread the word. However I can and and I'm very
impressed with that. I'm impressed that as a teenager you
were willing to do that. Thank you for sharing that.
(14:29):
You know, it's it's hard to be a pastor's son.
It's right. It's hard because everybody in the church is
like those Countner boys are causing all this trouble. I mean,
and you guys, you guys were like every other kid.
But it's because it's the pastor's son. And and you know,
sometimes I felt bad for your mom because she felt that,
like I can, she wants you want your kids to
(14:52):
be perfect, and there's no perfect kids. And when you
when you four got together bad. I'll tell you I
could tell some stories. I can tell some stories. I
loved coaching you. By the way, I only got to
coach in the summer league. And I can tell you this,
and don't be offended by this. A couple of your
brothers had maybe a little bit more basketball talent, but
(15:13):
nobody worked harder than you did. And you know what
it was. It was that summer was kind of fun
because we played in a city there was I think
six teams and you know, it was six teams from
the city and us and you guys. Coming from Pembine,
you didn't play a lot of city boys, and you
guys just played. I had a couple of kids on
the team that were a little nervous in the beginning
(15:35):
to kind of worked through it. But I loved coaching you,
and I wish I would have had you at Calvary
one year for sure. So miss Kayla, I'm gonna come
to you now, and if I can ask you to
share your testimony with us, sure.
Speaker 2 (15:48):
So I did not grow up in at Christian home.
I grew up Catholic, going to church on Christmas in Easter,
and I would say the the God that I knew
was more like the kind of do the right thing
and you won't get in trouble. But as soon as you,
(16:10):
you know, start, you know, then you're gonna go to help.
Speaker 1 (16:13):
Essentially, do you know what if I can stop you
for one second, I don't mean to stop you, but
in my head, because again Catholic, and so maybe similar.
I had the scoreboard from the gym in my grade
school in my head. I had it pictured and at
night I would say, okay, I got in two fights
on the playground, but I helped that lady across the
street with you, and I cut my neighbor's grass. I'm
(16:36):
even yeah. And when I got down over one hundred,
I stopped counting. And when I'm going to purgatory or
I'm going to help, I can't. There's nothing I can
do about this. I can't do enough good works. And
then it changed when it was well how in Pastor
Kens says, who's counting? And how much good works do
you have to do? And so I think, Kaylor, you
(16:57):
and I may be similar.
Speaker 2 (16:59):
Yeah, definitely, And I feel like I didn't. I mean,
I obviously learned about Jesus in Easter, but I feel
like I didn't know Jesus at all, Like that's all
I knew about him. So, you know, I was busy
in high school, very shy, which is why I leaned
towards studying so much, and then got into college never
(17:22):
really thought about it, and then the world kind of
started sucking me in and I started going to very
dark places.
Speaker 4 (17:30):
But I'm just yeah, And I have tears a lot
during this segment because he came to me.
Speaker 1 (17:41):
It's such a dark place. He met me where I
was at. I was on the verge of losing everything
that was important to me, my wife, my kids, and
my wife, and you met her and she's she can't.
I'm not afraid of her physically, but she said these
words to me. She's said, it's either us or that.
(18:03):
And I don't believe in divorce. But if you don't
figure this out and become the man that I know
you can become, you will live the rest of your
life in the loveless marriage. And all that dark stuff
I was doing I didn't even enjoy, but I thought,
that's who I am. This is who I am, and
I am so grateful. I'm embarrassed by mine, my testimony.
(18:24):
I'm embarrassed. I get asked to go out and speak
and I'm embarrassed by it because that's not who I
am anymore. But I have to give that part of
my testimony. And I can feel I feel you, but
we you know what the Catholic and and and the
dark places. I know, I know exactly where you were,
and and I don't I don't mind having the emotion,
(18:47):
but I don't ever want to go back to that.
He met you where you were at huh yeah, And
he put Kyle in your life, didn't they He did?
Speaker 2 (18:54):
Well, first, it was my I have an identical twin sister, okay,
and she's uh so much hurt. And you know, I
was depressed at that point in time. And my sister
stayed over my apartment one night and the next morning,
of course it's Sunday, and she was just like, why
don't you just come to church with me? I was like,
absolutely not no, because if there is a God in
(19:16):
this world, like, he is not good and I don't
want to know him from all the things that have
happened to me in my life. So my sister was like,
all right, well, let's go get coffee. So we go
to Duncan and who is sitting there but the pastor
preparing for a sermon. And so we get we get
(19:37):
there and she's like, oh, you've got to talk to him.
I was like all right, fine, So we start talking
and I start like, just you know, going at it
with him. He's like, well, just come. It's right across
the street. And it was a startup church. They didn't
have a church there, so I don't know if you
have any red carpet ends here, but they're not fancy.
Speaker 1 (19:56):
No, no, I know what they are, though.
Speaker 2 (19:59):
Yeah, this one was not. It was just gross. It
smelt bad. There were homeless people on the stairs going
up to the ballroom, and so we're in there and
I just remember the people were like so gracious and
welcoming and loving, and I was like, this is so weird.
And I go and I take a seat, and I
was like, Kim, please don't ask me to participate, Like
(20:21):
I'll be here and I love you, but just let
me sit here, and do you know.
Speaker 1 (20:25):
Whatever, what is your sister's name, Kim ahead.
Speaker 2 (20:29):
So we're there and they everyone stands up and starts
to sing. I think it was Oceans by Hillsong, and
it was the first time I've ever witnessed people truly
worship the Lord in song ever in my life, because
growing up in Catholic and there's nothing wrong with hymn's,
(20:50):
but I feel like the way that it was done,
especially in the church, it was just so dry and lifeless. Yes,
But when I was like seeing these people with their
hands up and like praising God for the first time,
I start, you know, just being in such a dark place,
I felt I know you're not supposed to go by feelings,
but I was like I felt love and light for
(21:13):
the first time in a long time, and it just
was a moment and I was just like, what is
this real? And then I left so confused. And then
three months later I was like, I have got to
go back and see if this is real or not.
And I started going to that church. At that point
they had a church building, which I was thankful about.
(21:37):
And then I started going to the pastor's Bible study
at him and his wife's house, and I'm so thankful
that I did. And the people who went there were
all in like seminary. So I would come at them
with all these secular science questions and they would be like, well, no,
you have to understand this way, and they would come
(21:58):
at it from like with all biblical answers. I was like,
you are turning my world upside down.
Speaker 1 (22:04):
Just stop, especially for somebody who likes and now I'm
so good in studying and researching, and right, what.
Speaker 2 (22:11):
Was the pastor's name, Pastor Dennis?
Speaker 1 (22:13):
Pastor Dennis. Okay, so now you're going to Bible study.
Speaker 2 (22:18):
Yeah, And then I would say it was about a
year and a half afterwards that I finally accepted the Lord.
I had a special place where I would just go
to escape from life and worry and I would just
sit up on the hill at my grandpa's grave and
play music. And so I went there after one sermon
where Pastor Dennis gave the a very good gospel message,
(22:43):
and I felt the Lord calling me. So I went
to my spot and I got down on my knees
and I was like, Lord, I'm such a broken person.
I don't know what you can do with this and
what you have I want, I'm telling you.
Speaker 1 (23:03):
So I went. I went. When my wife said those
words to me, you're going to live the life, rest
your life and loveless marriage. I went to Eastside Baptist
where she was going to church, and I was so embarrassing,
and I waited till the evening service but out and
I snuck in and I was Eastern Christmas, and I
always thought Pastor Darrow was looking at me every time,
(23:26):
looking at me. And I went into his office and
he goes, how you doing. I said, good. You got
a couple of minutes. He goes, yeah, I go listen.
I need some help. He said what's going on? And
I told him and he said, if you're looking for
a twelve step program, I can't help you. All I
have is this, and he held up the old King
James version and I said, that's what I need. And
(23:47):
he said, I knew you'd come. And I said, excuse me.
He said, I don't know when you would come, but
I knew you would come because your wife has been
praying for you for years. And this man he worked
with me, and I was in such a dark place.
It just was. And the fact that the Lord would
come there, and the Lord came, you know, when he
(24:09):
came at the perfect his time and is perfect. How
long after that time when you fell to your knees
at your grandfather's grave, did Kyle come into your life?
Speaker 2 (24:20):
Maybe about a year or two?
Speaker 1 (24:22):
Perfect time and perfect time? And look, I want to
meet Kim one day and I'm going to thank her.
I would hug her and say thank you. And Pastor Denis,
you did good boy. The Dunkin Donuts, Thank Goodness.
Speaker 2 (24:35):
For dunkin Donuts and us for coffee.
Speaker 1 (24:38):
Yeah, here here you go. I got mine right here.
You know. I thank God for those two because there
are times, as you know now, as a Christian, it's
hard sometimes to have somebody that you want to that
needs to come to church, that needs to have these
conversations and as a twin sister who said, I'm not
(25:00):
doing that. It's hard, and she she hung in there.
You know, I bet in her soul. When she saw
Pastor Dennis at Duncan Donuts, she said, Lord, I got it, Yes,
I got it. I'm going to introduce her to him,
and he's gonna take it from here. Huh. Appointment one
hundred percent. Man. You know, Kyle, your your dad says Mike.
(25:22):
You cry it just about every second segment. And I
do because it means so much to me, I say,
and you'll understand this more than most killing. We have
a lot of people, and possibly your husband on this
show that the worst thing they've ever done in their
life is steal a candy bar, right, And then we've
got people like and I and I don't know if
(25:44):
you know Daryl Strawberry, but Pastor Darryl Strawberry the base
at one point the greatest baseball player on the planet,
and he came on this show and he said, look,
all I ever wanted to do is be the best
baseball player in the plan, to have more money than everybody,
have more houses, cars, the best looking wife, the best
looking girlfriends, and I had it all, and I was
depressed and I didn't know why. And he was. He
(26:06):
was raised in a faith based home, and he got
put in jail and he started reading the Bible and
he now does him and his wife do two rehab facilities,
biblically based rehab facilities, and that's where he's at now.
But he said, look, I was I was depressed, and
I had everything I thought I wanted, and I couldn't
figure out what was missing until I got put away.
(26:27):
And then I started reading my Bible again, and that's
what I was missing.
Speaker 2 (26:31):
It's amazing how he can just change your life. And amen,
it may it amazes me that like we have a
God who loves us so much when we are just
nothing and not you know what I mean.
Speaker 1 (26:43):
Amen, yes, and willing to meet us where we're at,
and willing and not saying, look, you can't be part
of my family until you get this part of your
life figured out. You come now and we'll figure it
out together.
Speaker 2 (26:58):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (26:58):
And you've heard her testimony before, But Kyle, I see
tears in your eyes too, because you know the Lord
puts you guys together. And and I look, your kids
are so blessed to have two believers as their parents.
When when the year and a half into her journey,
well probably three years into her journey, you guys meet
(27:21):
and I'm sure that you've had conversations because your stories
are so different. Right, you're four or five years old,
and I'm not going to ask how if you're worry
I was twenty three? Okay, big difference? Do you can
I ask you before, Kyle? Before I come to you.
I envy people that started early because I wasted so
(27:43):
much time, and I bet you you feel the same
I do.
Speaker 2 (27:46):
I do feel the same. I wish I could have
like just known Jesus at an early age, but I'm
just still so thankful that he would even save me.
Speaker 1 (27:56):
That you know me too. You and I heard like
the whole academic thing, you and twins a little bit,
maybe maybe the whole academic thing. We are not twins
at all, Kyle. When when when you hear her tell
that story, and I see the look in your eyes,
in your face, you are so you feel so blessed
(28:18):
to have her in your life, and the fact that
she had gone through a whole different journey than you did,
You're okay.
Speaker 3 (28:27):
With Yeah, No, we we through our dating, uh process,
there was yeah, a lot to unpack just because of
the different you know ways that we were we were
brought up. I mean we even joke about it now
with her family and my family. I mean we're polar opposites.
I think Dennis, who ended up marrying us and did
our premierital counseling, I was like, God so cool because
(28:51):
he brought two different people raised two different ways, I mean,
completely different than God brings together. And now, you know,
fast forward, we got three kids later, and you know,
God's just doing so much and in our lives and
you know, to our kids, and you.
Speaker 2 (29:05):
Know, finds you even more once you start having kids.
Speaker 3 (29:09):
It's, oh, for sure, you just find out how selfish
you are, you know, when you get married. Then you
find out how really selfish you are when you have kids.
Speaker 1 (29:15):
Because yeah, and we had kids, you know while I
was still you know, doing this, and again I I
didn't even like that part of my life, but that's
just who I was. Like, I was the guy who
played softball. You know, I was on seven teams when
we got married, now five nights a week, and then
(29:36):
if I could play doubleheaders and there's a lot of
bars a lot of taverns after that kind of life,
and that's who you know, that's who I was with
these kids at home, my wife at home, and this
is and I I'm ashamed. I'm embarrassed by it. And
I see guys now that I used to play it.
And you know, like you're doing a religion show on
(29:56):
the way, I go, I don't do a religion show.
I do a faith based show. And they're like, what happened?
I go, I'm glad you asked let me let me
tell you. So it's thank you so much for sharing that.
I really appreciate it. And this show. What happens on
this show, Kayla, is there are people that aren't will
not step foot in church. I have a lot of
coaches that tell me they get their dog ready every
(30:18):
Sunday morning at one minute to eight, and they love
the stories. They love to listen. This is as close
as they get to church, is this show. And we
pray every week and we hope that somebody that's listening
will hear a testimony like yours or like yours and say,
you know what, that's what I need, that's what I'm missing.
So thank you so much for sharing that we're going
to get to a break. Other side of break, our
(30:39):
special guests for the entire hour, Kyle and Kayla Keltner.
This is Pastor Ken's oldest boy, and I don't know
if he had to marry somebody with the first letter T.
I think maybe that was mandatory in that Keltner home.
But we're going to talk a little bit about soccer shots.
Kyle owns a company in a Gusta, Georgia call Soccer Shots,
(31:01):
and we're going to talk a little bit about that.
On the other side of the break. This is Faith
in the Zone on the Big nine twenty in year.
I Heeart Radio App. Welcome back to Faith in the
Zone on the Big nine twenty in year iHeart Radio
App Again. Mike McGivern flying solo, coming from the Donovan
and Jorganson Heating and Cooling Studios. Our special guests. That
(31:23):
was a great segment, Miss Kayla. I'm telling you, I
thank you so much. Kayla and Kyle Caltner. Let me
tell you our guests are. They're living in Augusta, Georgia.
And before we get to soccer shots and what you
what you guys are doing? Kayla driving in you knew
that I was going to ask you for your testimony,
and you came anyway, So thank you for that. And
(31:47):
when I told you about I never wanted to do
it again after the first time I did it. I
hope that that it's always going to be emotional for you,
but I hope that you're willing to share it anytime
somebody asks. You never know who's listening.
Speaker 2 (32:01):
Yeah, always, because I'm like, God wouldn't have allowed all
those things to happen if he didn't have a purpose
for it, because he could have not allowed a lot
of things. Yeah, but he did.
Speaker 1 (32:11):
I agree. And again I want to thank Kim, your
twin sister, and I want to thank Pastor Dennis. If
they hear this, I hope that they're just smiling the
work that they did in Kyla's life. Hey, Kyle, talk
to me about soccer shots. You were coaching college soccer
and decided to make a change.
Speaker 3 (32:28):
Yeah, that's a little bit of long story. I'll keep
it short. So his coach jump there for about five years,
met Kayla. We were there on campus, loved the ministry.
Kayla is really involved in the campus life. There did
some zoomba classes and some stuff. So I had a
great time, didn't really. I love the competitive aspect of
you know, the Kellt Nurse. We like anything competition, and
(32:51):
it has been competition this entire week.
Speaker 1 (32:53):
I'm sure the.
Speaker 3 (32:55):
Wives are probably the wives are probably tired of it
because we like to eating anything and so yeah, oh
for sure, we've been doing that in our driveway. But god,
you know, started to move, especially when we had our
first on Yeah, and our our first really kind of
(33:17):
changed because with coaching, and especially in the college realm,
it's just recruiting. You're going all different places trying to
find you know, athletes, right student athletes who want to
go to your school, who can play you know, that
pool who's a Christian It was a Christian college, so
who were believers, so that pool was really small. So
that means that you have to go and travel a
(33:38):
little bit more than maybe the typical college coach. So
like that part of it. But then when we started
to talk about having kids, and then when our first
came along, saying, you know, I don't know if I
want to do that or the recruiting side of it, right,
and so long story, I actually started coaching and when
I was in college, my junior and senior year there
(33:59):
was a who's now the CEO of Soccer Shots, which
is a franchise. He came to me, uh and when
we were playing in our off seasons, we would go
and coach, and so I first was introduced to Soccer
Shots coaching. And I love kids. They were they're they're
they're they're fun. And so we coached. I coached during
that junior senior year. After that, he approached me multiple
(34:23):
times because we ran in different soccer circles. Hey, I
think you'd be great at, you know, doing a franchise
doing Soccer Shots. I said, no, not right now. So
I got into youth and got into college coaching, and
then I reached out to him and said, hey, I
think the time's now. And there was a couple of
different locations because that territory that we were they do
it by territories. Oka territory with that I was at
in Scranton was already taken. So that was off the
(34:45):
off the table. So we looked and there was a
couple on on the map, Augusta being one of them,
and that's where her twin sister was and her family.
We wanted to get south. We wanted to get out
of the cold. Uh, and so we said, hey, let's
take let's let's look. And there's been just so many
validation moments along the way of that process. It took
(35:05):
us about a year to pull the trigger on doing
soccer Shots, and just so much God came along. Every
time that I would doubt, Hey maybe maybe we'll just
stay here, Lord just would prove, you know, proved that
he was faithful. And we ended up moving down there
in January of twenty twenty, right before COVID. So not
a great time to open a business, but God still
(35:27):
had a plan.
Speaker 1 (35:28):
Horrible time to open it.
Speaker 3 (35:29):
Oh yes, yeah, we I mean put our business plan
together that COVID wasn't. That was not a contingency plan
anybody ever thought of. Luckily we were in Georgia, they
were one of the first to open as far as
the restrictions, so we limped along that first year. After
the first year, we were able to you know, start
to really scale and bring other staff alongside it.
Speaker 1 (35:51):
Hey, so soccer shots is four kids at what age? Yeah,
good question.
Speaker 3 (35:55):
So we start at two years old and we go
up to eight years old, and so we're that first
introduction to sport and even when we were sitting down
talking just so many stories about coaches just ruining experiences
for kids, and matt being you know, one of them
where your experience that you shared, and it's just so
(36:16):
critical to provide a positive experience and a beloved growth
experience for the family, you know, because that's our first
experience with sport, and we're you know, at that age, right,
We're teaching them to fall in love with the game,
to be a good teammate. We focus a lot on
character development and also player development.
Speaker 1 (36:34):
So Matthew might be calling you because Liam is five
and he's playing it upward and Matthew has to coach. Oh,
and I just like that. I have no clue five
year olds. How And I said, you know what, I'm
not helping you. But in the crowd the coaching, he's like, oh,
(36:55):
that's great, Taylor. Are you involved as well with soccer shots?
Speaker 2 (37:00):
Not really, not too much, more so just supporting Kyle.
Speaker 3 (37:04):
There was a there was a point where we tried
to have her come on and help, but you know,
she runs things at the house and so for me
to tell her what to do, you know, it didn't work.
Speaker 1 (37:14):
But I with and how old a get to your
your kids.
Speaker 2 (37:18):
We've got three kids, four, three and one.
Speaker 1 (37:21):
Oh man, yeah, do not get involved in soccer shots.
You know what. I again, you have just beautiful children.
And the time that that I spent with you guys.
The other night, my wife Terry and I really well
behaved children. I think, is it there's one daughter, and
I think it it might be is it Kevin's who's
(37:42):
kind of a mother hen And she was like making
sure nobody was going by the pool and making sure
everybody was sitting and eating. And I thought, Okay, that's great,
But boy, I that's your Your life is full. Man,
You're busy. Huh yes, How at what age you start
teaching the kids Spanish?
Speaker 2 (38:00):
Because I bet just started doing it.
Speaker 1 (38:02):
I had a feeling I bet you were you were
doing that. You couldn't do what you're doing without right
support one undred percent. How big is your company right now?
How many employees?
Speaker 3 (38:13):
And yeah, great question. So we have around twelve part
time twelve to thirteen part time coaches, and then we
have three other full time staff wow with myself, yeah
or other?
Speaker 1 (38:26):
And then we have to get through a break. Other
soccer shots around the country as big as yours.
Speaker 3 (38:31):
So yeah, there's three hundred and twenty six territories I
think across the country, and they do a report on
enrollments and how you know where they fall. I'm usually
the middle of the pack. I think last time I
checked out was about seventy six. Is there one here
in Wisconsin?
Speaker 1 (38:47):
There is?
Speaker 3 (38:48):
Yeah, there is this area. Yes, there is, absolutely. I
can get you in touch with them.
Speaker 1 (38:51):
Yeah, that would be great either, that'd be awesome. I
don't know. I have not heard of them, but soccer
shots excellent. Let's get to a break. So, guys, I
gave you a little heads up. Every uniform you've ever
put on, you get to put him in a closet
and you get to pick one uniform out one game
(39:11):
with that team. What uniform do you pick? Who do
you play against? And why we're gonna ask both Kyle
and his wife, Kayla Keltner, thank you for coming in.
This is the most time we've ever talked. And I'm
a huge fan of yours. Do you know that he
my boy over here, did good and I'm so happy
to be able to spend this time with you, Kayla.
This is faith in the Zone on the Big nine
(39:32):
twenty in your iHeart Radio app. Welcome back to Faith
in the Zone on the Big nine twenty in your
iHeart Radio App. Man, it's a really fun segment. I
love asking this question. Our special guest Kyle and Kayla Keltner.
They are in from Augusta, Georgia. Pastor Ken's oldest boy
is in studio with us. So, guys, and I'll start
(39:53):
with you, Kyle, all the uniforms you've ever put on
your entire life, we put him in a closet. You
get to pick one out, get one more game. What
uniform visited? Who do you play against? And why?
Speaker 3 (40:04):
Great question. Everybody probably listening is probably gonna say soccer. Right, Well,
I think I'm gonna go throw a curveball and I'm
gonna choose basketball. They're at Lancaster Bible College. We were,
uh so as myself, Kevin, and Keith all on the
same team.
Speaker 1 (40:18):
I read that article. By the way, Yeah, we were.
Speaker 3 (40:20):
Not very good at that point, but uh there was
a few games. There was one in particular where we
had a we had a chance to beat a pretty
good team and uh just yeah we What was it then?
Was I think we're playing in uh Etown and they were.
They were they were pretty recognized. There were Division III,
(40:41):
they're pretty good basketball program, and we played them there
and we you know, my role was, you know, get rebounds,
guard their you know, best player, try to shoot it. Yeah,
so I didn't get a whole lot of opportunity to shoot.
I shot a few, but Kevin, you know Kevin, he
went off and he could not miss, and so we
were That was just a lot of fun and we
(41:03):
had a chance to kind of win at the end
and we didn't. But just playing with the brothers all together,
that would have been.
Speaker 1 (41:10):
I would like that. I would I would like that opportunity.
Just a great answer. And if you could get that back,
I'd come to that one. I'd come to watch that one.
Speaker 3 (41:18):
As long as you're coaching.
Speaker 1 (41:19):
Oh, I would love that even more. And I would
bench and I'd have Kurt on the bench. You're not
going to college, I have on the bench, and he'd
be would be a coach. Miss Kayla. Look you you
you were in ballet, track and field hunting, fishing, all
(41:39):
of that. It can be one of those if you
would like what what what do you pull out of
the closet you get.
Speaker 2 (41:46):
Back one time hunting, because there's this one time my
dad and I were up early and we were in
the on top of the mountain and we were in
the deer stand, and we were out there all morning
and it was so cold. It was like the last
day for rifle for buck. And finally, like this big
(42:06):
eight point buck starts coming along and it just started
coming into site where I can get the gun out.
And then my dad is older, I love him, and
we never let him live this down, and he starts
to try and move and get in a position where
I can get the rifle out, and he's just like
(42:27):
and he starts getting a cramp in the side of
his leg and it stiffens up and he falls down
and then the deer goes off. I was just like, no,
all season we've been up here.
Speaker 1 (42:40):
I love that. I love you, Salvator, Salvator. Do you
call him no? I call him down, Salvator. I love that.
What the worst time to get a cramp?
Speaker 2 (42:54):
Worst? And the well season.
Speaker 1 (42:56):
Took off, took off running.
Speaker 2 (42:58):
Yeah, I would I would love to get that shot back.
Speaker 1 (43:00):
You would have dropped it, huh.
Speaker 2 (43:02):
I would have. It was there, It was right there.
Speaker 1 (43:04):
Notice I don't know much about it, but you would
have dropped it. Look if you look at your eyes,
you oh you want that shot back? During the break,
you said, you know, I I like going out with
a bone and arrow because the weather's a little bit better.
Are you pretty good at that as well?
Speaker 2 (43:20):
I'm okay at it. I had to use a crossbow
because I can't pull back much weight or tiny. Yes.
Speaker 1 (43:26):
Is your sister a hunter and a fisher as well?
Speaker 2 (43:28):
She really liked hunting for a long time, and I
was more of the fisher one. I loved being out
on the lake early mornings. I could be out there
all day long.
Speaker 1 (43:39):
Guys, we got just a minute left here, and I
can't thank you enough. You know, Kyle, you and I
got a chance to sit the other night, and you're
gonna get me the name of a book that I'm
going to read. And I was very impressed with when
we talked to a little business. You know, you were
doing the same kind of the same thing right to
her own companies. And and and I'm struggling with some things,
(44:00):
and you said, look, here's I struggle with that too,
and and and this is the way I'm doing it now.
It's really working. And and that whole saying about you
know you can you can still teach an old dog
a new trick, right, I'm always trying to learn. And
thank you for the time that you spent with me
the other day. And Miss Kayla, I got very impressed
with you and I did some research on you. I
can tell you this that when I called Pastor Ken
(44:22):
and said, do you think it would be okay if
I asked Kyle to come in? He said absolutely? And
I said, how about Kyle's wife? And Pastor Ken said, please,
she she would be so good. And she and I'm
so impressed with her testimony, and you're gonna understand that
their testimonies are different. Please do what you can to
have her come in. I think she would be so
good on faith in the zone. He loves you to death.
(44:45):
We talk about you guys a lot, mostly positive, almost
all positive with you so much with Kyle, but you
know we got the count her boys a little bit.
But guys, thank you so much. You know, keep keep
loving those kids up and keep supporting him. And you
know this whole lot kicks your coverage, your man. You
did and she is as wonderful as you have told
me that she is and now I get it. I
(45:08):
didn't know her before, but I get it now. Man,
you did really good and it's so good to just
spend time with you. If there's anything, send Salvatore up
here and he can teach me how to hunt.
Speaker 2 (45:18):
You'd love it.
Speaker 1 (45:19):
You would like did you realize in the state of
Wisconsin that high school state championship football has to has
to be done before deer hunting starts.
Speaker 2 (45:31):
It's the same way where I grew up. You get
the first yeah, you get the first day of buck off.
All the schools are shut down.
Speaker 1 (45:37):
Oh my goodness. I used to say, look, why are
we starting so early in football? And that's the reason why. Guys,
thank you so much. I really appreciate your time. Thank you, Mike,
thank you. This is faith in the Zone. I'm the
Big nine twenty in your iHeart Radio app.
