(00:02):
Top notch sports talk you'll love fromtwo guys you know him love. Welcome
to the chop Talk Podcast. Hey, how's it going. Definitely a long

(00:27):
time and not a lot of talk, but yeah, we we did not
want it to get this bad againand this was definitely not part of the
plan, but finally had some time, so might as well get to it
here. This is the chop TalkPodcast in conjunction with Fox Sports Wheeling.
Just me, Corey, clue you'rewith you. Hopefully we can get Chris

(00:50):
in here next week if things don'tget crazy again. And that's the thing.
Things just got really crazy with theday job duties here. iHeartMedia Wheeling,
and whenever it felt like I wouldfinally have some time to give you
guys an episode or get Chris inhere to do an episode, things just

(01:11):
get busy again and I get swamped. So I don't want it to be
this way. I know you guysare sick of it, but just had
to roll with the punches here alittle bit. And Chris has been through
a lot in the last few months. Won't get into specifics on what happened,
but there was a loss in hisfamily and just need some time for

(01:37):
himself. So hopefully we can getChris in here next week as long as
things don't get busy again, likeI said, and hopefully get this thing
back on track here. We'll definitelydo everything within our power to get everything
back on track by the time highschool football season rolls around, because we
gotta go full steam ahead with that. But in the meantime, just got

(02:00):
to take care of what we gottatake care of, and we'll get talking.
We'll get back to talking on sportsas often as we can until then.
But we thank you for joining us, thank you for sticking with us.
If you're sick of our guts becauseof the hiatuses or hiati whatever the
plural for hiatus is, we don'tblame you, but we didn't want this

(02:22):
to be part of the plans. So we'll do all we can to write
the ship right here and get backto this regularly. We sincerely apologize that
it got this bad, but we'regonna do everything in our power to make
this right here. So this mightbe shorter, this episode might be shorter
than what you're usually used to,but you just gotta talk about something and

(02:46):
get you guys caught up in everything. So We'll go ahead here and talk
about the Pirates for a little bit, because there was a lot to be
proud of here for the Pirates, especially in the month of April, leading
the NL Central and just coming outof nowhere to be a surprise early on

(03:07):
in this twenty twenty three season. But since then it hasn't been all that
good because May was a big timedisaster. Things were a little bit better
in June, but you wish thatthey would have been better than they were.
And then July not necessarily off tothe best of starts. I mean,

(03:27):
you get swept by the Brewers, you lose three or four to the
Dodgers, I mean this past Dodgersseries. At least for the most part,
the Pirates kept things competitive throughout thecourse of this series, and at
least there were times where the offensewasn't exactly didn't exactly go ghost. But
one of the big things into thedownfall of the Pirates here after April was

(03:52):
the lack of offense for most ofthe games. Even when you would get
some really good starting pitching, theoffense would end up letting people down,
and injuries definitely contribute to that. You've missing you're missing O'Neil cruise, and
you miss Brian Reynolds for a periodof time, kee Brian Hayes too,

(04:12):
But you got to figure out somethinghere for the offense. Now. You
have had some good contributions from someof the guys you've called up. Nick
Gonzalez, he's had his moments.Jared Triolo, he's had his moments.
Henry Davis might have been a littlebit rocky at first, but he's really
started to figure things out here inthese last couple of weeks after making his
debut. I mean, last nightmight not have been good, but Henry

(04:34):
has picked it up here lately. You still just wish, though, that
the offense would be better than whatit is at times, and especially in
scenarios where they have people in scoringposition, but there are just times where
they just can't get it done andit just drives you up a wall to

(04:57):
see it happen. And then thepitch, not necessarily the starting pitching,
the bullpen more than anything else,it's kind of suffered as well. I
mean, you've had a lot ofpeople rotate in and out of the bullpen
and it's definitely contributed to the losingas well. But David Bennar is still
David Bednar, and that's why hewas able to be named to the All

(05:17):
Star Game after Clayton Kershaw won't bedoing it because of an injury, and
then Mitch Keller getting named outright initially, and if there was going to be
anyone to get the representation from thePirates for the All Star Game, it
had to be Mitch Keller because hisgrowth over the course of the season has

(05:41):
just been absolutely amazing. I mean, if you've listened to past episodes,
you know all too well. Ihave raked him over the coals so many
times and had just been ripping onhim because he just hasn't been that good.
But he has really stepped up thisyear, and maybe it comes with
maturing, because keep in mind he'sstill very much a young pup. You're

(06:05):
in the majors, but you gottatip you gotta tip your cap to Mitch
Keller. He is more than deservingof being the All Star representative for the
Pirates next week or coming up herein the next few days in Seattle.
You just hope, though, thatyou can see a similar turnaround with Roanzi

(06:25):
Contreras, because he didn't start outtoo bad to begin the year, but
has just fallen off a cliff eversince, and then went to the bullpen,
still continued to struggle, so hegot optioned to Triple A yesterday.
You just hope that this doesn't thatthis is not, that this doesn't mess

(06:46):
with Roanzi too much, that he'sable to work on some things down in
Triple A, he's able to gethis confidence back and he comes back to
the majors and he can be theguy that we that we hope he can
be. Had so much great potentiallast year and unfortunately it's just nowhere to
be found this year. So you'rejust hope and pray that Ronzi is able
to figure it out during this newstint here in Triple A. And then

(07:13):
you keep hearing the rumors a coupleof weeks ago that maybe the Pirates are
thinking about trading Andrew mccutcheen and maybethere's a chance to just reunite with him
next season, But thank god, that's not going to be happening. At
least Bob Nutting knows what he's doingthere, because you don't. You don't
just roll out the red carpet forthe guy who revitalized your franchise, got

(07:38):
you back into the playoffs, andgot you back into relevancy, and then
just ship him away mid season. If that word had happened, if they
would have ended up trading Andrew mccutcheen, it would have been the straw that
break that broke my back, becauseI would have been done. I would

(08:01):
have been done being a Pirates fan. I know that would have my father
in law rolling in his grave becauseI know he wants my son to be
the best Pirates fan he can be. But boy, that would be very
difficult if the Pirates ended up trainingcouch. But thank god, it looks

(08:22):
like that's not going to happen. So before the All Star Break gets underway,
the Pirates will have one more seriesin this West Coast trip. They'll
be in Arizona throughout the course ofthe weekend. But of course, Arizona
no slouch this year, very surprisinglystill leading the NL West. I mean
La was able to close in thanksto winning three out of four against the

(08:45):
Pirates. There are now only ahalf game back of Arizona. But Arizona
has been no slouch. This isa very young, scrappy team that is
definitely a force to be reckoned with, and you're hoping they can keep it
up if you're a d Backs fan, because looks like the Dodgers, even
with everything going on, working innew guys and just working through not being

(09:05):
as dominant as they were the lastcouple of seasons, still very much in
thick of it, still could verymuch win the NL West. Same thing
for San Francisco, they've been solidas well. I want to get my
hopes up about San Diego, butthey've been an epic disappointment. So Arizona
definitely has something this season, andthe Pirates need to do everything they can

(09:26):
to try and slow the momentum here, especially since the NL Central is still
somewhat kind of in reach. Iknow they're eight and a half back a
first place, but you never know. It could go back to hell.
It was a couple of weeks agowhen teams are struggling to stay above five
hundred. All depends on if Cincinnaticools down, if Milwaukee gets back into

(09:50):
a slump, and if the Cubsreally don't catch fire. So there is
still hope for the Pirates. Youjust hope that they can just get these
inconsistencies figure out it's going to beeasier said than done by some of the
play that you see, but stillgot to have hope, right, and
the hope has been tested here onmy end, believe me. But we'll

(10:13):
do what we can here. SoPirates and d backs throughout the course of
the weekend, you can listen toit on Fox Sports Wheeling and hopefully they
can create some positive momentum before theygo into the All Star break and then
head back home after the break whenthey host the Giants for a three game
series. I'll actually be at thegame next Sunday with my wife and my
sons, So my sons want toknow. So far when it comes to

(10:37):
Pirates games, and we went tothe one back on June third, I
want to say, now, y'await June fourth, June fourth, because
the next day was was my wifeand I anniversary. So yeah, went
to the one on June fourth.Pirates beat the Cardinals that day two to
one, So my sons want toknow and aims at p and Z Park,

(11:00):
so hopefully we can made two andoh on July sixteenth. Talk about
the Penguins here a little bit ofcourse, just went through the draft and
free agency for the most part here, but before that, able to get
a able to get a higher inthe front office and get Kyle Dubis away
from Toronto. I mean, youknew he was going to have a challenge

(11:22):
on his hands because the tight capsituation that the Great ron Hexstall was able
to leave him with. Please hintthe sarcasm in my voice there. But
we'll see what he's able to do, because you liked the pick that he
made in the first round of thedraft. Brandon Yeager out a moose job,
good little playmaker, speedy as well, has the potential to be a

(11:46):
top six forward. So hopefully thatall materializes. And then making some moves
either through free agency or trade toimprove the depth on the bottom lines,
because lord knows they needed that thispast season. Love the trade for Riley
Smith. Hopefully he's able to workthings out here in Pittsburgh and contribute to

(12:07):
getting the back of the playoffs. And then you got the signings of Acri
Larzeller and a few others that cancontribute to the to the bottom lines and
or even the bottom pairings in thedeal in the blue line. But then
you get the signing or the resigningI should say of Tristan Jarry and boy

(12:30):
were the comments on Twitter, entertainingto read, Look, I get it.
I understand if you're not that thrilledabout Tristan Jarry coming back. He's
good, but you wanted to begreat and he hasn't exactly gotten to be
great just yet. But it's thebest you can do right now. Might

(12:52):
as well have that to fall backon and be somewhat competitive, then get
the get you get somebody lower thanhim and potentially not even be a factor
in the playoffs or just not evenmake it, yeah, or even be
in contention, but just not haveany skin in the game. I still
have hope that jar can be somewhatgreat, but the clock is ticking,

(13:16):
to say the least, So we'llsee what's able to come of that and
what's able to come of the newadditions to depends. But one things for
sure, we down here in Wheelingmight be loving the Kyle dubis affect in
Pittsburgh because if you saw dj Abasilla'stweet when Dubisk became the guy, there

(13:43):
was the notion that he would signa lot of AHL quality players and have
them spend time at the ECHL affiliate. If he carries that same blueprint over
here to Pittsburgh, we might beloving it here in Wheeling. It's good
to know we got some familiar faceshere, some players signings coming through here

(14:05):
in the here this week. Peterlave Lett and Davis Buns will be back.
So good to have those guys back. But if we can get those
HL quality guys per Kyle Dumas's blueprintof how to structure everything amongst the affiliates,
I'm feeling pretty good about this comingseason if he sticks to that.
So we shall see. But makeit happen, Kyle, go ahead,

(14:30):
also make that Eric Carlson trade happen. I know it might be a little
bit difficult now since she has spentsome of the money, but we could
definitely use a little something something hereon the blue line, especially after losing
Brian Dumlin. I know a lotof you, I know a good few
of you are broken hearted about Dumlinleaving. But you could definitely use some

(14:52):
star power and Carlson can do justthat. So if there is a way
you can make it happen, Let'ssee if you can bring Eric Carlson over
here to Pittsburgh again. This isChoptalk Podcast in conjunction with Fox Sports Wheeland,
Corey Clue Gear with you, ChrisThoburn. Hopefully back next week as
long as things don't get too hecticwith my duties here on my end,

(15:13):
But just trying to get back ontrack right here, just try to re
establish some things this week. Sothis episode might be shorter than usual,
but at least we're talking about somethingyou want to catch up on past episodes.
We're on the iHeartRadio app, Spreaker, Apple Podcasts, wherever you get
your podcasts, and if you wantto sound off on something and you're listening

(15:33):
on the iHeartRadio app, click thattop back mike and sound off. You
have thirty seconds to do so,and if you do, you just might
hear your thoughts on a future episodes, so make sure you get to that.
I will close though by giving mythoughts on the Bob Huggins situation.
Horse been a pretty eventful offseason tosay the least. Bob Huggins goes on

(15:58):
a radio show and Snatty drops theF word when talking about Xavier fans,
and no, I don't mean theF word that you get when you try
to enter it in your smartphone andit auto corrects to duck, I mean
the one that rhymes with bags.So punishment gets hand down. He handed

(16:18):
down, his salaries reduced, he'ssuspended for three games, but he still
stays on as the coach on Mountaineers, but proceeds to make it worse with
a d uy in Pittsburgh. Andthat was a straw that broke the camel's
back there and he is now nolonger the head coach. And look,

(16:41):
I understand if people want to defendhim, because it was pretty it was
darned good for the most part, coaching his alma mater. But when you
put yourself in that kind of situationwhen you say what you said on the
radio program and then proceed to geta duy weeks later, what else were

(17:03):
they to do? Do you reallythink that WVU would have had enough rationale
to keep Bob Huggins after the DUI? And even just going back to the
incident with the radio show, howdo you not know that you're not on
air? I mean, you shouldn'tbe saying the word whether you're off air

(17:29):
or on air, But how doyou not know that you're on air?
Like the hosts are reintroducing their programand everything. You're here in bump music
and everything. How do you notknow that you're that you're on air.
Just a ridiculous way to go aboutit here, and then you shoot yourself
in the foot with the d UI. I appreciate everything Bob Huggins did during

(17:56):
his time at WVU. You're bringingthem back to relevance and the move to
the Big twelve and getting them backto being competitive, and especially the trip
to the Final four years back. But how else did you think this was
going to end? Now? Atthe very least, they were able to

(18:18):
find a coach in house, butunfortunately that's not enough to keep a lot
of the transfer portal recruits that youwere able to get over the course of
the off season. And that's theother thing. You were able to get
so many good players off of thetransfer partle you had a chance to to
have a really good season and giveKansas a run for their money and maybe

(18:41):
even be a dark horse to getto the Final four, and you just
and you just dump it all theway. I just don't get it why
it would why you would want itto happen this way, But it did.
We lost a couple people, butit's still a solid team to say

(19:02):
the least. You just hope thatthis shakeup doesn't hurt them all that much.
So we'll see how it goes lateron this winter. So I'll put
an end to the chop Talk podcasthere again, I know, shorter than
usual, but just trying to reestablish things, get back in the groove
and everything. So we're going todo everything in our power to make sure
everything does get back to how theyshould. Thanks. Just got crazy one

(19:27):
way or another these last couple ofmonths and just enough time, but we'll
do all we can to work onthings here, get back to these episodes
more consistently, and the goal isto have it all right by high school
football season because we cannot leave youguys hanging during that time of the year.

(19:49):
So again, we appreciate you standingby us. We understand your frustration,
but we appreciate your support more thanyou'll ever know, and we hope
you'll continue to be along for theride for us. So for Cory Klue,
thanks for listening to the Chalk Talkpodcast this week. Until next time,
keep calm and chocol
