live from Cold Beers and Cheeseburgers inOld Town Scottsta on Fox Sports nine ten
and the iHeartRadio WAT Welcome to thecourse light first period of Hell Frozen Over
now alongside Coach Powers, the voiceof Sun Devil Hockey Tyler Pale. Well.

(00:24):
We made it be two weeks intothe college hockey season, but these
days Sun Devil Hockey is all smiles. In the last two years, or
last two series rather number thirteen,Arizona State has swept a ranked opponent and
taking care of business against another deepand talented team. As we sit here
tonight, the Devils have a fouroh and o wrecord, the best start
in program history. They're one ofjust five remaining teams across the country with

(00:48):
a perfect record up to this point, and the way that this team is
playing shows that ASU can compete inevery game for a full sixteen minutes.
The Devils have perhaps their biggest testto date this coming week, hitting the
road for the first time to afuture NCCHC opponent, aiming to continue their
winning ways to wrap up October.Hi Everybody Welcome into episode two of this

(01:08):
season of Hell Frozen Over Live tonightfrom Mullet Arena for the next hour here
on Fox Sports nine ten, streamingon the iHeartRadio app, and on the
Sun Devil Hockey Facebook page. I'mTyler Paley, the radio play by play
broadcaster of Sun Devil Hockey. Happyto have you along as we discuss the
team's latest news and notes and getyou ready for ASU's next series against Miami.

(01:29):
We should note we're here at MulletArena instead of cold beers and cheeseburgers
this week because of the Game sevengoing on right now, the NLCS Game
seven. We'll be back at CBand CB on Tuesday, November seventh,
kind of switching things up. Tostart today's show, we are welcoming in
Ryan O'Reilly to the show, alongwith my broadcast partner on the Mountain America
Credit Union Sun Devil Radio Network,Alex Coyle. Great to have both of

(01:53):
you along with us for the lastthree years. Ryan O'Reillys, We've seen
what you can do with the puck. We have seen kind of your leadership
and your skill develop over the courseof time. A lot to talk about
with you, but First of all, how you doing. How you feeling
this season? You guys are offto a four and oh start. Is
what is your mentality right now?Yeah? My mentality is great. It's

(02:14):
been a really exciting start going fourand oh, it's been the best start
since I've been here, and youknow, playing through COVID and you know,
doing a year at Ocean Side andmoving into the new rink. It's
exciting and kind of get settled inhere and have this great start and keep
building momentum throughout the season. Yeah. I want to talk about that hot
start here in a moment. Butfirst, the big news of this off
season was that you were named oneof the four alternate captains on this team.

(02:36):
I mentioned before that it was aplayer vote actually played into this,
so something your teammates really believe thatyou earned. What was your reaction when
you learned that news? And whatdoes this mean to you to wear that
a patch on your chest? Yeah, it's really humbling to you know,
especially get picked by your peers onto be, you know, part of
the leadership corps and going in thisyear. It's really exciting for the five

(02:59):
guys who got picked. I thinkall of us are great leaders, but
throughout the room, you know guyswithout letters or leaders too, and you
know it's great to see how thisgroup's come together, informed and you know,
built leaders throughout us five and throughoutthis room we got. What was
your reaction when when coach came inand said, hey, these are your
captains for this year. It's exciting, especially to be a part of that
five. I mean, I thinkall of us are really close, and

(03:21):
you know, it's exciting to leadthis group, especially going in this year
with what we got. We gota really deep line up, and you
know, we've got a really goodshot this year and winning national championship.
Who are some of those leaders fromyour season's past, so you took things
from who are your favorite guys thatyou're followed, and how are you implementing
that to this year? Yeah,I think Donor and Jacob Wilson we're you

(03:42):
know, one of the really goodcaptains we've had here. And Colin Tyson
as well, he's here playing inthe NHL for the Coyotes. But you
know, those guys were great leadersbefore us, and you know they led
on and off the ice, reallyloud in the room and just really respected
all around people and players. Whatkind of leader would you say you are?
I mean, I asked Tyler Grattonthis a couple of weeks ago.
He said he kind of tried tostrike a balance between the Josh Jones,

(04:05):
the Colin Tyson's, the Jacob Wilson's, the Brinson Passnooks of the world.
What kind of leader are you?Are you more of a lead by example
kind of guy, a more vocalguy. What would you classify yourself?
Ast Yeah, I would say I'mmore of a lead by example. I
try to work really hard on andoff the ice, you know, whether
it's in the weight room, awayfrom the rink. I'm just trying to
lead by example, do things theright way, you know, whether it's

(04:27):
my teammates or people I'm around.I just want to leave a good mark
on the program and myself. Prettyawesome. All right, let's get to
the team's hot start four and ohthis season. I know the season is
young, so there's a lot thatcan happen, and we don't want to
get ahead of ourselves, but thereare a lot of reasons for you,
your teammates, the fans, useverybody to be excited up to this point.
How good does it feel down therein your locker room right now?

(04:49):
It feels really good. We talkabout having a winning swagger, and you
know four and oh definitely gives usthat. I mean, Merrimack and Northern
Michigan, they're really good opponents andit's great to have them off the start
of the season. But you know, we don't we don't really look back.
We keep going forward here and youknow, we got to get test
this weekend, going on the road. It's our first time playing you know,
not Mullet this season. So we'replaying Miami this week and then we

(05:11):
got Stonehealth the next and then abig matchup against Denver at home, and
we haven't played them here yet sinceI've been here. Yeah, lots to
prove. Yeah, the theme thatI keep hearing from all of the different
guys that I've had the chance totalk to, it was how important this
summer was for you guys, everybodyhere that that was able to train over
the summer, How hard training campwas for you guys. What did you
guys gain from that and how importantwas that session. Yeah, I think

(05:34):
it's great. We had we hadthe most guys here in the summer and
having a facility like Mullet, wehadn't really had everything on site, and
you know, we had a lotof guys hurt last year. I think
we had nine out you know, during the regular season at one point.
And you know, I have allthose guys, you know, take care
of their injuries and be here andget bigger, faster and stronger and get
ready for this year was huge andI think we've displayed that in the first

(05:56):
couple of games. What struck methe most this season, so it's kind
of the selfless play on every line, Guys looking to make smart passes,
play their role, Keith pucks downin the offensive zone, really as much
as possible in any way possible. What is it about this year's team in
particular that has the guys playing reallyselfless hockey? Yeah, just like you
said, I think everyone's selfless. And you know a lot of guys that

(06:18):
come here, especially transfers, andyou guys like you want to be here
for the right reasons. We're allhere to win. And you know that's
kind of what this group embodies,is a winning culture and that winning swagger.
What we have in these first fourgames, and I mean, it's
a living and breathing thing. Youwalk into our locker room, you can
see like the atmosphere that we have. It's it's something really special and I
haven't seen here in the past fouryears and it's the best it's ever been.

(06:40):
So it's really exciting. One ofthe key things that we've seen so
far early on is the depth ofthis group, and there's even some guys
that we haven't seen on the icejust yet. With that depth being such
a key factor in this team's successso far, is there almost a bigger
sense of urgency in practice to makesure you earn your spot, knowing that
the guys on the bench can easilycome over and take that. Yeah,

(07:01):
I mean it's it's great to obviously, you know, have the lineup that's
in, but you know, everyonethat's in is competing, you know,
as hard as they can, especiallyin practice. You know there's guys that
should be in there playing, youknow, on this team. They're wearing
suits during games and they can playon any other D one team, but
they chose to be here for areason and help this team win, and
that's exactly what they do. ButI mean, there's competition on the ice

(07:24):
during games, but it's within ourown lineup as well. What obviously lineups
you mentioned they kind of change alot, right, They can change game
to game, kind of shift around. But last weekend you played with Kyle
smoll In, a newcomer with reallya lot of potential. We've seen a
lot of good things from Kyle andBenji Eckerley, who was named the iron
Man after the last Friday's game. He's been such a critical piece of this

(07:44):
team for years now. What isit like playing with those two in particular,
and kind of balancing the younger guyin smoll In with two veterans in
yourself and Benji. Yeah, Ithink we've built a lot of chemistries past
two weeks. I know Smaller didn'tplay with me and Benji the first week
weekend, but I mean he's mystallmate in the locker room, so I've
gotten to doubt him a lot andbe next to him. So he's,

(08:05):
uh, he's great, and he'she's done a really good job as a
freshman. And Benji, I meanhe's my roommate freshman year and me and
him know each other really well.So I think our line has come together
and played some really good Hockey's youknow this last weekend, the weekend probably
how impressed are you with a guylike Kyle smollan And really, I mean,
you guys have nine freshmen on theteam this year. How impressive is
this freshman class? S feshman classis great. It's one of the best

(08:28):
we've ever had. And everyone's reallydeep with competition here. And you know,
with a guy like Smolly, he'sa guy who comes to the rank
every day and puts his work beatson and goes really hard, and you
know, you can see it ingames. You know, he doesn't take
a shift off, and you know, I think that's something that's contributed a
lot to our line and a lotof the success we've had in these past
couple of games. Yeah, coachpower is really high on him. You
when you see all the new energythat has come in, whether it's in

(08:50):
the transfer portal or from those freshmenthat Tyler was just mentioning, does that
give you, guys, the guysthat have been here, some more energy
to go out there every single dayduring practice? Even watching practice today,
it seemed very competitive and even Iguess you guys were having fun, which
I you could see that in thatpractice should Does the new Blood help you

(09:11):
guys out too? Yeah, newBlood definitely helps us out a lot here.
It kind of gives us a freshnew feel for things, and you
know, giving us new ideas evenwith like you know, you said with
the transfer re portal getting new playersand stuff, but a new coaching stuff
as well. We got two newcoaches who bring in fresh, new ideas
and you know, new ways tocompete, new looks at things, and
you know it helps and builds alot to a team that's trying to win

(09:35):
here. You talk about those newfaces, and what's funny is, you
know, you got a lot ofnew faces in your locker room, whether
transfers or freshmen. But I'm curiousabout your impressions of a couple of new
faces over in the coaches room,Coach O'Connell and and coach Borgs. What
do they bring to Arizona State. What's your evaluation of working with them so
far? Yeah? Albi is great. He was a head coach and he

(09:56):
brings a lot of great ideas andit's really hard on guys and uh and
practice for sure, and and Danaas well. He's really good on video
and he's he's always been here gettingfresh new ideas. He's worked with me
a lot, especially in preseason. You know, just little things like wallwork
and you know, how to likeas a bigger guy, how to use
your body, you know, withthe puck and create space as a bigger

(10:16):
player out here. Do you feellike you've gotten better because of those?
Oh? For sure that help?Yeah? Yeah, Dana, for sure
he's helped me a lot. Imean even he's pulling guys aside doing video
and you know, kind of nitpickingthings. But you know, if you
want to be great, you haveto, you know, find those little
flaws and make them great. Yeah, kind of rise to the challenge.
Yeah, that's pretty awesome. Asyou guys get set to go on the

(10:37):
road. Of course, we knowabout Miami gonna be a new conference folk
coming up next year. But asan independent right, you only get a
certain amount of times that you getto go on the road and the pairwais
you get helped out by some roadwinds. How important is it with so
few road tests this year to goout and get some wins early. Yeah,
going on the road early is huge, And I mean we we talked

(10:58):
big about the para Whites would bein the dependent team, and I mean
getting wins early on like that canreally help you later on down the line
when you're trying to get that bidto go to the NCAA playoffs. I
want to dive into your individual statsfor a minute, if you don't mind,
because what strikes me about your statsover the last four seasons that you've
been here in Tempe's is you're gettingbetter every year. Again on the stat

(11:22):
sheet, but it shows out there. Three goals your freshman year, eleven
total points as a sophomore, sixteenpoints as a junior, with those two
game winning goals that I'm sure youremember pretty well, and already one goal
and two helpers through four games thisseason. I know and I understand that
stats do not tell a complete story. So help us understand your improvement.
Is it simply just the experience ofplaying at this level over the course of

(11:43):
time. Is it something specific you'vedone to get better from year to year.
Yeah, I think it's experience andconfidence. I think this year coming
in, I'm healthier than ever andplaying with really two great line mates like
Benji and Smalley. I mean,it's been great, so I think my
confidence is up and you know, obviously that show is on stat sheets,
but I think just playing the rightway has really helped me to get get

(12:05):
improvement on stats like that. Ofcourse, the longer you play, the
more you have to rely on passionfor the game. Where does your passion
for the game of hockey come from? I think my passion comes from my
brothers. I mean I kind offollowed in their footsteps growing up, so
when I watch them play, Ialways wanted to do stuff that they did.
So they're not playing anymore right now, but you know, I kind

(12:26):
of played for them in my family. But we're always a hockey family growing
up. So it's nice to playhere such a great university like ASU,
and you know, kind of continuethat tradition that you know, my brothers
kind of got me into the game. I got two more for you before
we let you go eat dinner andgive you back your Tuesday night, which
I appreciate you you hanging out withus so much. All right, so

(12:46):
this weekend, you guys are flyingout to Oxford, Ohio two games with
Miami University. And that's a teamwe mentioned before that ASU is going to
face a lot, perhaps just aboutevery year moving forward, it's a new
NHC opponent. What will you guysneed to come out with and really do
as a team to come out withtwo wins in Oxford and come back here

(13:07):
and play Stonehill. I think justestablishing a game. It's really hard to
play on the road. You know, I played during COVID year every single
game on the road, so it'skind of hard to play living out of
the hotel room and you know, being away from your own bed and your
own routine. So it's it's gonnabe a different look for a lot of
guys here. But I think establishinga game early on and not deviating it
is kind of huge for games onthe road, especially against a team like

(13:30):
Mammy and the NC. Yeah, really talented team. Three and one on
the year. All right, mylast one for you. I know they're
still a whole season to go.I'm sure you're not looking too far in
advance, but I'd be remiss ifI didn't ask about the Red Wings.
You got, you were drafted acouple of years ago. They own your
right. Still, is that stillthe goal when you exit ASU, still
to hopefully go play in the NHL? Yeah, I mean it's always been

(13:50):
my aspirations to play pro, butlike you said, as of right now,
I'm you know, continuing my careerhere and I want to I want
to do as much as I canfor ASU and hopefully when a championship at
the end of you locked in andfocused. I love the goal. I
really appreciate you spending time with us. Safe travels to Ohio. We will
see you there and best of luckthis weekend. Thank you really appreciate it

(14:11):

(17:41):
Episode two of season two of ourshow where we talk all things Sun Devil
Hockey. Tyler Paley, joined byAlex Coyle and Arizona State head coach Greg
Powers. Here at Mulled Arena thisweek Game seven going on two to one
Philadelphia right now, unfortunately, buthey, we're we're keeping it on in
the background. Shut out a littleSun Devil Hockey in the mean time,
of course. All right, coach, good to have you. Appreciate you

(18:02):
coming down joining us. Hope yourvoice is recovered. It sounds back.
It's almost bad. Feeling good, feel great good, all right, good
stuff, all right, So I'llstart with this simple one for you.
You're four and zero on the season. How good does that feel? It
feels really good obviously to get offto the best start in program history.
And really what we're deeming as ourfirst full year at Mullet with an off

(18:23):
season to plan and prep and makeit our home. It feels like home,
you know. And and and we'recertainly treating it like home, and
have had four big wins to startthe year, and now we got to
put them behind us and move forward. Did you sense any pressure to come
in and get off to that hotstart, knowing again last season as the
independent, you got to start hotto get that foundation in the pair.

(18:44):
Wise, Yeah, I wouldn't saypressure. I would say I would say
more responsibility. This is this islike we said our guys from day one,
we have to treat this season likewe're wearing it like a badge of
honor, you know. And allthe guys that came here to help us
build this program and sacrifice other operastunities to play at a place like Ocean
Side and be founding father and bethe tradition, we owe it to them

(19:07):
to go out swinging, you know, and close this first chapter Son of
a Hockey on a really high note. And there's no better note to do
it than to go back to theNCAA tournament. We've talked over the years
for a long time about how difficultit is just to win in college hockey.
So four straight wins really in anyfashion against anyone, nothing to scoff
that, but we know there isa lot more work to be done.
How do you balance your team's welldeserved confidence and humility kind of knowing you

(19:32):
still have thirty four games hopefully morethan that to play this season again,
just you have It's so cliche, but you have to focus on one game
at a time. You know, back in our two really successful years,
we had a countdown clock and allit did was focus on the very next
opponent. And as soon as afterthe second period of a Friday night game

(19:53):
was over and the third period started, we have the equipment staff going and
change it to the next day.So when they walked in, they you
know, after after even after Friday'sgame, all they need to focus on
and win loser, draw on andand that game is Saturday. So we've
gotten back to that, just focusingand controlling on what we can control,
and that's the game in front ofus, and and right now we're worried
about Miami on Friday. One ofthe things that really stuck out to me

(20:17):
last year and this year one wordthat you have mentioned multiple times the idea
of being heavy. Right last year, at times maybe it wasn't that,
But something today that you mentioned specificallywas this team has been heavy. What
does that mean for people that don'tknow what that is? Just essentially,
it means hard to play against, you know, and and and and stout
and and and a team that finisheschecks and one that's not fun to play

(20:38):
against, one that's hard to playagainst. And if you're heavy, you're
not fun to play against. Andit's not necessarily just about size heavy as
a mindset. Everybody can play toan identity. We have told our guys
from day one this year. Ouridentity is is fast and hard. You
know, and and and if youplay fast and hard, it doesn't matter
how much you weigh. If you'regonna be in the lineup, you better

(21:00):
play fast and hard. What goesinto instilling that on a group, it's
just a mindset. I mean again, last year, I think the biggest
part of our issue was establishing whatour identity was. We had a lot
of skill. We had two tremendousplayers in Josh Done and Robert Master Simoni.
And when you have those guys, they get so much time that you

(21:21):
know, other guys they don't havemuch of identity because they're not getting put
in those positions that those guys were. And it just trickled down to where
those guys on third and fourth linesweren't playing the way you needed them to
play. And so it was justrestructuring a roster, getting back to what
makes us successful, which is beinghard and heavy, hard to play against.
And so far, through four gamesminus really a period we have been

(21:45):
I want to spend some time recappingthose four games. Let's catch everyone up
with how the last two weeks playedout. We'll start with that Mary Mack
series. Two weekends ago. Thenumber fifteen Warriors at the time came to
town, game one scoreless. Forthe entirety of regulation, we went to
overtime, took about two and ahalf minutes for Matthew Coppery to bury the
game winner, uh, just asthe power play expired, by the way,
sealing that one nothing victory in aone to oh start. You've got

(22:08):
to love the the grit that yourteam showed over the course of that game
and to start the season. Nonetheless, Yeah, it was it was something
the resolve that we felt. Itwas genuine on the bench and in the
room and during that entire game againnot to start we wanted against MERRIMACKT did
did you know? TJ held usin it for ten minutes, but after
after that we really settled in.There was never panicked, There was never

(22:30):
doubt, even you know, Saturdayagainst Northern you know, or Friday they
take a lead and and and ourteam has has responded every time we've been
down. They responded right away. And and so there's just an inner resolve
that this team has. And it'sall leadership. You know, our captains
have done a great job. Wehave an older team. We brought in

(22:52):
some older guys, fifth year transferslike Brian Chambers who's a complete mule,
Tyler Gratton who's obviously our captain,Brandon Tabac in a fifth year from Yale.
So they've just given us this experienceand and and confidence and and and
it's it's seeped into our entire rosterand and and you can feel it.
Yeah, you alluded to it.But that that game too. Kind of

(23:15):
a different story, but kind ofthe same takeaway. The storyline was was
grit right. You fell down onenothing scored, tied, the game fell
down to one, scored tied. The game eventually took a three to two
lead, held on uh to tobecome two and zero on the season.
Added an empty netter made it fourto two the final. What what do
you take away from a series likethat against I mean, you went into

(23:37):
it saying, hey, this isa really good opponent. They are no
longer ranked, but who cares. They are really talented and I'm sure now
they are today you know, ohthey are today? Okay, interesting,
So but I'm sure you're you're rootingfor them to win out for the rest
of the season now for sure. They're they're a great team there, they
really are. I mean, theythey handled their business against two really good
teams, and Clarkson and Saint Lawrencethis last weekend. They're they're they're they're

(23:59):
a top twenty team like bona fide, and so to get those wins that
early against the team that good. Both those games could have gone either way.
They're both very evenly played, butat the end of the day.
What I was really proud of wasthe discipline of our guys. We won
the series because we were the moredisciplined team on that weekend, and our
power play made them pay at theend of the game. And they weren't
great over the course of the weekend, but they were really good when it

(24:22):
mattered most, and that's what youwant out of your power play. They
scored two big power play goals towin it and seal it for us on
Saturday, and it's just resolved. It's confidence and experience and some veteran grit
that just goes throughout the entire room, and our guys have genuine belief that
Northern Michigan series right coming in,they had scored ten goals against a very

(24:45):
good team. Coming in, youknew how they wanted to play, and
they wanted to change INDs of theeyes very quickly. They wanted to push
the pace and it seemed like youguys knew that coming in obviously, but
they never got to play like thatat all. What does that speak to
you? Preparation and everything and overallyour team executing a game plan almost to
perfection. That's when you know youhave a team that's really bought in,

(25:07):
right. They were really this teamreally they want more. They constantly want
more. They take it all inreally well. You can feel that.
So they really are grasping how wewant our guys to play and what it's
going to take to be successful throughfour games. But they just played the
right way. They played the rightway. We had an F three that
that helped and slowed down transition. Our d did a great job with gaps

(25:30):
and that allows, you know, our last two guys with heavy back pressure
to close them out and not givethem much in transition, and they didn't
have much. They actually had afew odd man rushes on Saturday night early
and TJ held us senate. Wefixed a few things and and from really
that point on, it was itwas our game. On Friday, you

(25:52):
had talked to us after the gameand you said you did not love the
couple of penalties you took late inthat game against Northern Michigan, but you
guys still found a way to closeit out. It was brought closer,
obviously, three to one became threetwo, but you found a way to
close it out. I'd imagine you'repretty happy with the ability to play I
mean, we talked so much aboutplaying a full sixty minutes, but that
was kind of the epitome of it. Yeah, I think Saturday was for

(26:14):
sure our best game. Friday wasa good game. I thought we were
the better team. I thought wedeserve to win the game. What what
you like as a coach is,you know, Dylan Jackson takes an ozone
penalty with under ten minutes left,You're up two goals two hundred feet from
our net, and they don't scoreon it and we win the game.
It's always better when you can teach, and you can you can you can
go back and give those teaching momentsin a win, you know, And

(26:37):
and that's what we don't want. That's what we're gonna have to stay away
from, is those types of penalties. You know, they gotta be hockey
plays. The penalty that they scoredon, I didn't think it was a
penalty on Charlie So it was inour d zone. He was trying to
make a play. He kind ofjust got ran over and got called what
we saw too. But so itis what it is. But you know,
but but it's always good, youknow. We feel like our team

(27:00):
is playing well. We feel likeour team can play a lot better again.
When you're having success and and youknow you can improve, I think
that that that's that's what every coachwants. What was the lesson to Dylan
there? Was it simply, hey, don't do that again, or was
it just you know, it's it'sessentially don't do it again. It wasn't.
It wasn't egregious. It was justhim not moving his feet. And

(27:21):
then in college and when you getyour stick parallel and you make body contact,
you're gonna get called. So ifyou're going to do that, it's
got to be in front of yourown net to save a goal, right,
It can't be two hundred feet awayfrom your net when they're not dangerous.
So just anything to keep them awayfrom getting momentum. In a game
where we were playing a perfect thirdperiod, they didn't touch the puck very
much. I think they had ashot up until that moment. One shot

(27:42):
and it gave him a little bitof life, gave him little momentum.
So it's just learning from it.Dylan had a great weekend. I thought
he was tremendous. Uh, itwas. It was an honest mistake that
one our entire team can learn fromand will overall, we've touched on a
lot of the positives. What whatcan you guys improve upon from last weekend
heading into the rest of the season. Yeah, I mean puck management,

(28:04):
you know, better starts. Idon't think our starts have been great.
They're getting better every game, butyou know it just coming out ready to
go, you know, and andand in a much much better start where
we can play downhill from the firstshift, and and just bought into to
how we need to manage the puckat all times. It's getting better every

(28:26):
game and you can feel it.I don't think the team's not bought into
any any way or anything that we'repreaching or how we want to play.
It's just polished round confidence and we'regaining that with every win. You know,
you kind of alluded to it,and clearly this point isn't lost on
you. But this is this isinteresting. First four games there hasn't been
a single goal scored in the firstperiod by either team. I trust this

(28:47):
isn't necessarily intentional, but is thereany benefit to going into the locker room
scoreless after twenty minutes? Knowing whatkind of game the opponent's playing, maybe
be able to scout out, youknow, exploit. I mean adjustments.
Adjusts are important in our game, and we certainly make them no matter what
the score is. But I thinkI think going in you know, zero
zero four games in a row,is more credit to TJ than anything because

(29:11):
because we could have gone in everysingle game down, it's gotten better.
Like I said, but but hegives you a chance and gives the guys
a chance to settle in. Wegot a lot of new players, so
he's just a backbone back there thatsettles everything down. And even Saturday night,
in a really good effort, hehad to make two huge saves to
keep it zero zero. So youknow, it's having a good backbone that

(29:34):
lets your team settle into a game. That's all you got, That's all
you got. Oh my goodness, were left. Yeah, we seriously do
all right. We love to seewins, especially in those two big series

Coach Powers and Alex Coyle rejoined theshow. Now, all right,
Coach, I know you don't lovetalking about this, but it's only fair
to make our listeners aware. Allright. So, Arizona State ranked number
thirteen in this week's US Echo Poll, moving up from number eighteen last week.
Week. One thing I do knowyou care about is the pair wise
where ASU was number one for aminute, now number three. Okay,

(34:07):
I got to get it in now, all right? Did you at least
take a screenshot of that? Didit maybe you smile later on in the
season, or are you planning onbeing back to that number one spot.
I was sent screenshots of it.I can tell you that I should have
done that. You know, it'sit doesn't matter. You know what I
want to say, and like thelike I said this morning, and it's
it's nice for our guys to berecognized and respected by coaches and media.

(34:31):
But at the end of the day, it's all for you guys. It's
not for us. It means nothing. We're not in this to be paper
champions. We want we focus onone thing and that's a pair wise and
and really the data it doesn't matter. There's not enough dat in it for
it to have any relevance. Rightnow, after fifteen games, if we're
still three, you'll see me smilingat a lot more. Okay, fair

(34:52):
enough, getting off to this hotstart. You know we've mentioned all of
the first this first this this historywas something that Tyler Gratton mentioned was one
of his goals during preseason media availability. How do you guys ensure that history
keeps on being written in this programthis season? Well, I think the

(35:12):
biggest thing about this team is thatthey this team to a man, even
the new guys, the transfers respectour history as a program and actually made
him. It sounds kind of cheesy, take a history test and study for
one, because guys that came herein the early years and gave up opportunity
to go to blue bloods or moreestablished programs, they need to be respected

(35:36):
forever. And our guys need toknow what they went through to get this
and to be here and be inthis position. And so I think that
when you have guys you know, really dive into the history of how this
happened and who made it happen andthe players that made it happen, they
become more attached to it. Andyou have to do that when you bring
in and Tyler Gratton, who camefrom such a great program like State and

(36:00):
was a captain there and an overtimeaway from a frozen four, and make
him feel like he's a part ofsomething bigger than himself. And and they'd
all genuinely feel that way. Soto make history and moving forward, you
got to know your history. Yougotta know where you came from to get
to where you want to go.This team knows where we came from.
Okay, I have a lot offollow ups about this. Who did the

(36:21):
best on the test? They allpassed? Were there were ten questions they
needed to get nine out of ten, and everybody got nine out of ten
most most of them got ten outof ten. Was it like multiple choice?
Uh? Some were true? False? Some have multiple choice, some
were filling the blank? Got it? And what give me? Like an
example question like how far back didyou go back to like the a c

(36:43):
JA days? True or false?Let's see if I'll get it. Alaska
Fairbanks was the first NC DOUBLEA winfor Arizona State, first win against an
NC double A team for Arizona i'so I think it was Penn State.
I don't think it was Penn State. Galax has got all right, that's
right, Okay, so I gotto this were first win was actually as

(37:08):
a club team against Penn States, right, and the DBAs just took the
lead. Hey, let's go therewe go? Oh good, sets us
up well for the rest of theshow. That's the thing, all right,
Let's get back to hockey here.I feel like a broken record because
I ask you this about every timeI see you, at least once.

(37:28):
But I want to ask about thepower play because we'll be talking about this
every week. The team that unithas has improved so much. So let
me pose the question this way.Does your emphasis on practicing the power play
strategy change from week to week orare you putting as much time into it
after a successful weekend opposed to aseries where you perhaps struggle. No,
we put as much. It's thesame. We're big believers in a routine

(37:51):
throughout the week, theming your daysthroughout the week. So the guys come
here every day knowing exactly what we'regoing to work on. We will work
on it tomorrow morning before practice beforewe fly out to Miami later in the
afternoon. But Alex Hicks and nowAlby's chipping in. But Alex does a
great job running the power play andhe loves to work on it at least

(38:12):
two days a week every week,no matter if it's good or bad.
If it's good, we show himwhat they did really well and what's working.
And you have to tweak some thingsinto power play every week depending on
how teams kill. So it's it'sa constantly evolving, you know, piece
of the game and piece of success. And we get a guy that does
it first class and Alex six MatthewCopperod obviously is going to be the first

(38:36):
name mentioned alongside that power play bya lot of other teams, a lot
of people in the media. Howcool was it to see him number one,
get the winner on opening night comingoff the injury, and then number
two on Saturday break the program recordfor power play goals. It's awesome.
And he got right off the iceand he was like it was loud,
and he was telling me something andhe kept saying, like Johnny Walker and

(38:59):
I was like, Cop, hedoesn't play you anymore. And I'm like,
what do you talk to He goes, I just beat Johnny's record.
So it's the first thing said, and I go, Okay, we'll give
Johnny some crap after the game, like focus, you know. But CoP's
awesome, Like he's he's a beautyand we're proud of him. And I
know Johnny talked to Johnny this week. He's over in England. Johnny was

(39:20):
excited and he was excited that Coppwas the one that got it. Cop
even mentioned giving some of that toJohnny on the post game show after the
game two got it, I mean, and just seeing Cop this year as
opposed to last year. You couldtell it's just night and day, which
is is pretty awesome to see.All right, let's talk about this weekend
series. ASU hits the road forthe first time this season, traveling to
Oxford, Ohio two games with MiamiUniversity. This is one of the few

(39:43):
remaining teams in college hockey you've neverplayed before, but ironically will be one
of the teams you play the mostmoving forward as an NCHC member beginning next
year. RedHawks are three one tozero on the year. What's your scouting
report on Miami? Yeah, Imean, you know, they're off to
a good start themselves. If thepair wise matters, which it does to
you their third I believe, yesthey are. But no, they're an

(40:07):
NCHD opponent. They're gonna be good. They are good, they're well coached,
they have a chip on the shoulder. A lot of people count them
out and and we're not. Weknow that they're gonna be a tough test.
You go on the road and win. In college hockey, it's hard
to matter where you go. We'rejust going and focus on being ourselves and
playing as hard as we can andgoing out of there with with some success.

(40:28):
Going on the road for the firsttime in a season, it's usually
tough, especially for some of thenew guys to college hockey. What are
you guys gonna do, if anything, to make sure that they're ready to
play come Friday night. Yeah,I think more, you know, when
you go on the road for thefirst time is really just focus on you,
you know, not worry about externalthings that you can't control. We

(40:50):
do have the benefit of having areally good veteran team, guys like oh
and Cop and you know, BrianChambers and Tyler Grat and they've been around
the block. They've been everywhere. You know, Brandon Tabak and Timothy Level
they've played everywhere. So they're notgoing to go into any environment that's going
to intimidate them. We don't havea lot of freshmen in right now.
We have an old lineup right now. I mean you have you know,

(41:14):
Josh Neiermy or Anthony Dowd and KyleSmallen right now is the only freshman in.
Something could change, but that's whatit was last weekend. So we
have a veteran lineup going on theroad and not having success because of you
know, having it be a newexperience isn't an excuse for this group.
It's not so far this year. You have started TJ simptom Felter in net

(41:35):
all four games. We talked aboutkind of the balance you're trying to strike.
Starting TJ as much as possible withoutwearing him down. Can we expect
him to start one game two gamesthis weekend? We'll play it by year,
And to be very honest, therewas there was debate on throwing Gibbey
in on Saturday against Northern and wedecided we decided to go back with TJ's
workload wasn't that heavy on Friday. But you're going to see Homer very much

(42:00):
sooner than later. It could bethis weekend. He's ready to go.
He looked great today. He's chompingat the bit to get in there.
We know we can win with him, but we do have to manage TJ
better this year, and we will. But right now he's fine, he's
We're four games in and he's he'sjumping. But what when you do make
that switch for a game, whatare going to be some of the factors

(42:20):
that you look at to make thatdecision. Just when when we think TJ
most importantly needs it, he'll neveradmit that he needs it because he's a
competitor. But getting to know himand and and really, you know,
having him be our guy now fora little over a year, we're gonna
we're going to know, We're goingto know we haven't hit that time yet.
And when that time comes, youguys will see it. And and

(42:40):
again, I think it'll be forsure one of the next two weekends.
But he will continue to start amajority of your game. Yeah, I
mean absolutely, he's a guy.I think everybody knows that. It's very
clear and and but but we wehave a team we think can be playing
into April. And if you're goingto have success in April, you better
have a fresh goalie. So wegot to make sure that we do.

(43:01):
There were a couple of guys whogot banged up last seeraries Silly was slow
to get up at one point,Ty Jackson as well. They did continue
to play after they went down. But how are they doing and any other
injuries to note heading into this weekend. No, we're healthy. Some bumps
and bruises, but nothing out ofthe ordinary. We took Monday as an
optional day for guys to freshen upand get healthy and really get some working

(43:22):
with the guys that haven't gotten in, which are all working really hard and
chomping at the bit. And I'mexcited to see some other guys play here
soon too. But the team's healthy, and that's after we went through last
year, and never something I'm goingto complain about. Knock On Wood,
Kyle Smoller. You mentioned the threefreshmen earlier, but Kyle Smollen has been
the guy that really stood out forme. And how ready he seems for

(43:45):
college hockey. Why is that becausehe played four years in the USHL,
you know, and Smallen is justthese everything we want a Sun double hockey
player to be. He's mature,he's team first, to do anything you
ask. He can play up anddown the lineup. He's a smart kid.
He's an unbelievable person and human being. He's a great teammate. He's

(44:06):
everything you want. And you know, small In last year was supposed to
come in and then late in thesummer we were able to get Master Simony.
I called Smalls up and I said, hey, did you see we
got Master? And he said, yep, it's unbelievable. Let me guess
you need to be playing another year, and I said yeah, and he
goes, no problem, no problem, And anything I got to do to
be at a sull do, I'lluse it to get better. I haven't

(44:29):
forgotten that, that selfless attitude andapproach to our program, and he got
better from it. He went backto Fargo, Mountain was really good,
built his confidence, came in hereready to make an impact, and he
has made a huge impact team playerwithout even being on the team. Yeah,
it's pretty impressive. And he wasalways wanted to be a Sun Devil,
he told Alex a couple of weeksago. Yeah, all right,

(44:51):
coach, all in all, whatneeds to take place this weekend to secure
first Game five s win and thengame six wins? And I guess again,
just continue need to be us,you know, continue to get better,
you know, going on the road, I think we're gonna have to
have our best effort no matter whowe play. So if we can build
off of Saturday's performance and complete effort, do some things a little bit better

(45:13):
and a little bit harder and alittle bit faster, I think we can
have success. So let's just continueto get better every day in every game.
Well, we certainly hope, socoach Greg Powers with the lowdown.

all set for Arizona State's upcoming series, my friend, let's start with what
we saw from ASU the last twoweekends. Just talked about it with coach

(49:22):
first. That Marymack series really setthe stage I think for kind of what's
to come. It's a team thatknows that it's in it. Until the
final horn sounds, even when theyfall behind, struggle to put the puck
in the net or create that offense. Yeah, I mean coach used the
term resolve. I think that's thebiggest thing that we learned about the team,
right. I didn't know what toexpect coming into this season. Of

(49:43):
course, you beat the team fromtwo soon sixteen nothing. You're never going
to complain about that, But youcan't learn a lot about a group through
that. You could feel the differencethis year, but you hadn't seen them
on the ice against another team.So starting the season against Mary Mack,
a very good opponent, a rankedopponent, getting to early in that second
game and fighting back twice to goahead and win that, and then last

(50:05):
weekend just to really dominate in termsof the style played, how each team
wanted to play. It tells youall you need to know. I was.
I just want to bring up aquick kind of personal anecdote. I
was chatting with my dad the otherday and he was saying, he tunes
into all the games, he listens, he watches, and he even from
far away in New Jersey, noticedkind of a difference in the pace of
this team's play. A difference intheir attitude and their kind of willingness to

(50:30):
will a win and a victory. And to me, that shows so much
because if fans near and far areseeing the difference, you can't quite put
your finger on it, but there'sa difference about a team that just wills
its way to win. I thinkthat speaks volumes about coaching. I think
it speaks volumes about the talented playersand we're in for a fun season.
Benji Eckerley put it really nicely todayduring media availability. He was asked,

(50:53):
you know about the chemistry. He'slike, oh, yeah, chemistry.
We've always He's always been close withhis guys off of the ice. But
the difference this year they're close onthe ice, if not even more close
than they are off, and sothey're playing as one single unit. We've
seen that on some of the penaltykills. I think that the penalty kill
is an area where you can seethe chemistry of the team really shine and

(51:13):
grow, because when you're working asone unit, one guy down, you
have to be that one machine, and they've done that so far. This
is a fun team to watch. So I encourage anybody listening watching right now
go to the Sundevils dot Com getsome tickets because there's a lot of home
games left and this is a funteam to watch night in and night,
or even if one of the roadcities that we're going to this year come

(51:35):
up, say hi to us,of course, and you know, a
couple of trips out east which willbe interesting in the Midwest this weekend,
Yeah, trips to Alaska as well. We're traveling everywhere with the Devils.
That Northern Michigan series a similar casethat Arizona State fell behind one nothing,
both games came right back to tieand then take the lead on both Friday
and Saturday. That series struck meas more dominant. Devils were the better

(51:59):
team, I think, just justplaying and simple. Yeah, they didn't
lose a period, right. Alot of times we talk about during the
game, oh, you gotta winthe first period. Well they won all
every all six periods that in thatcontest. And again it comes down to
knowing how Northern Michigan wanted to play, how they played the week before,
scoring ten goals in a series atDuluth. I want to say it was

(52:21):
a very good team seventeen at thetime and going out and not letting them
play like that at all, right, seventeen shots in one of the games.
Of course, that helps TJ playmore games during the season, which
helps likely you win more games,of course, with the caliber goalie that
he is, and and you know, the resolve and confidence and togetherness.
Again, going back to it,it's gonna sound cliche. We're going to

(52:43):
beat it over the head all seasonlong, but that's just what it is.
You brought it up, and Iwas going to ask you about this
and in a few minutes, butgoaltending continues to be such a strong characteristic
of this team for the second straightyear. TJ semptm Felter really never waivers
between the pipes. You heard whatcoach had to say about TJ just a
few minutes ago. I think it'sgot to be so hard to think about

(53:05):
sitting your starting goaltender a guy whohas proven time and time again that he
will get you results. He hasbeen rock solid. But I totally understand
where coach is coming from. Wesaw what happened last season. The guy
was just over work. He washe again, as coach said, he's
not going to admit that, butyou could see that and him walking around
pre and post. But I waswatching specifically one guy during practice today.

(53:25):
They had a drill right behind us. They were on the center ice circle.
They had one net on one side, one net on the other and
playing a three on three. Iwas watching Gibbie the whole time. That
dude is massive, and that dudeis quick like he is a We haven't
seen him play too much yet,but he is going to step in very
very well when he gets his opportunity. So of course the drop off is

(53:46):
going to be there because of experienceand just simply who TJ is. But
Gibson Homer is a very very goodgoal And for all the hockey fans out
there, and even for the morecasual fans, it's so fascinating to me
to see a goaltender of his sizebecause naturally he does a great job in
the practices and even the minimal gametime that I've seen him in action,

(54:07):
he does a great job kind ofcoming out from the crease, which cuts
out angle exactly. And already,I mean, you could be hugging the
posts and you'd basically block ninety fivepercent of the net, But to cut
off those angles as well, you'resaying he's quick, he moves well,
he's he's very agile in the creaseand outside the crease. He's gonna be
a real talented goaltender for years tocome. And clearly we're gonna see plenty

(54:30):
of them this year. Yeah, and I think it's it's good learning experience
for him to number one, tobe behind DJ. But also he's gonna
get one game. Maybe could beone game a month, could be one
game every other weekend, but that'sgonna be his chance. All right,
this is my game. I'm goingto dominate my game to set myself up
to be the horse in years tocome. And there's not gonna be any

(54:51):
doubt in that Arizona State locker roomthat they have equally as good attempts to
win on the Knights that Gibson Homerstarts than they do. Remember TJ was
a backup, he was in.Yeah, so you never know, right,
and we saw how that worked out. Devin Levi, currently a Buffalo
Saber. A lot of our conversationlast weekend surrounded the defense, the Ty
Murchison Ethan Schmaggy pairing becoming arguably oneof the better more connected units in college

(55:14):
hockey. They anticipate each other's nextmove. They can both step up on
offense when needed. Communication is excellent. Then you add Tim Lovell, who's
probably the best d man at thispoint, along with Anthony Daod Brandon to
back in the Niedermeyer brothers. They'reallow they've allowed just five goals in four
games. Most of all, yousaid it before, they're preventing pucks from
ever reaching the net, right,And a lot of it was due to

(55:36):
the scouting report that they had helpedout by the F three, as coach
Powers said so many times, butspecifically the group of Murchison and Schmaggy.
Right, that pairing them being soconsistent and so consistently good allows you to
mix and match with the other twopairings. With two good veterans and then
three guys that are learning the positionor learning college hockey, it really helps

(55:59):
out the entire real tough matchup.Excited to call both games Friday and Saturday,
three point thirty pre game in Oxford, Ohio on both nights with a
four pm putt drop here in Arizona. Appreciate head coach Greg Powers, one
of the alternate captains, Ryan O'Reilly, and of course you my friend Alex
Coyle for joining us. Sean Crespinis our producer. He does a fantastic

(56:21):
job. We appreciate all of hiswork, and of course our producer back
in the studio, Chris Schubert. We thank him for all his help.
We'll see you back here on Fridayat three thirty for ASU and Miami.
Good night, everybody,
