(00:24):
The college hockey season is well underwayand the number sixteen Arizona State Sun Devils
are feeling good through eight games.Sun Devil Hockey remains undefeated at home after
extending their winning streak to six gamesthis past weekend, the longest stretch to
open a season in program history. The Devil's got their first taste of a
road series two weeks ago, andnow they're preparing for perhaps their toughest competition

(00:48):
yet as the Denver Pioneers come totown for an important series. This is
all to say, plenty to talkabout tonight, and plenty to learn from
Coach Powers as we get set forgames nine to ten of the season.
Hi, everybody, Welcome into seasontwo, Episode three of Hell Frozen Over
Live tonight and all season long fromCold Beers and Cheeseburgers in Old Town Scottsdale
for the next hour here on FoxSports nine to ten and streaming on the

(01:11):
iHeartRadio app. I'm Tyler Panley, the radio play by play broadcaster of Sun
Devil Hockey. Happy to have youalong for the ride as we discuss the
team's latest news and notes and getyou ready for another week of college hockey.
Joining me tonight and every other weekthis year, our Arizona State head
coach Greg Powers and my broadcast partnerAlex Coyle. Good to see you both.

(01:32):
How you doing today, Coach Great, Good to see you feeling good?
Yeah? Good stuff. All right. So, I know I typically
give you a trivia question toward theend of our show, but I figured
we'd switch things up. It kindof seems apropos right off the bat,
so no cheating on this one.Okay. I mentioned your home win streak
is at six games right now,but ASU actually has a longer unbeaten streak
at Oceanside and over at Hila ina previous season. Do you remember when

(01:55):
that was and how long the streakwas. I'm gonna guess it was in
two thousand and eighteen nineteen season andit was it nine games? Okay?
Both of those are wrong, butclose. So it was nineteen twenty and
it was an eight game streak. You went six oh to two okay during
that street, So it was anunbeaten streak. Unbeaten streak, right,

(02:16):
it wasn't a winning streak. Youhad to listen to the linguistics. Did
you say unbeaten? I did?I have it right in front of me?
All right, hey, fair enough, that's fine. We'll keep the
trivia questions rolling. I think Ihave one for later in the show,
but we'll see. All right, let's get back to this season. Let's
recap how the last two weeks havegone since our last episode back on October
twenty fourth. At that time, you were getting ready to head out to

(02:37):
Ohio for a series with Miami University. Game one, things were going really
uh really well. Arizona State's wayall the way. The Devil's got off
to a fast start, the offensewas rolling. ASU held a four to
one lead toward the middle of thethird period, but that's when things started
to go sour. Miami ended upchipping away, eventually tying the game with
under a minute left and winning itshortly into overtime. I'm sure that's one

(02:59):
you don't want to relive, neitherdo we. But what went wrong down
the stretch, you know, reallynot a ton it was. It was
it was they didn't have us hemmedin that we didn't feel, you know,
on our heels at all. Ithink the guys on the bench you
could, you know, you couldfeel them getting a little bit loose up
four to one, and and youtry to dial them in and and and

(03:22):
and whip them back into the focus. And we had a couple of chances
to go five to one, andand it just was one of those things,
you know where where where they scoredon a flute a flute play.
You know, we were going outof the zone and and it got bad
out of mid air and took abad bounce and three guys got caught on
the wrong side of the puck andtheir guy fell in the corner and r

(03:43):
D didn't see him and he gotit. It was just one of those
things that cut it to four totwo. They score a power play goal,
you know, to to cut itto four to three, and then
uh and then a six on fivegoal and then we losing three on three.
So it was just a weird,a really weird chain of events that
happened. That was what it was. And then the next night we bounce
back that the team we have isvery resilient. We bounced back incredibly well.

(04:06):
We felt like we really outplayed themthat Saturday, and obviously we got
to tie out of it. Butthe way our guys bounce back from such
a heartbreaking losses, it says alot about the character. Yeah, to
go off that second game as well. If you guys facedile quantifiable easy for
me to say, Tyler adversity aftergame one, and you guys bounce back

(04:29):
and go back to the identity thatyou wanted to play with. But you
guys just ran into a hot goaltender. Yep, this group came in.
We knew they were going to betight, but good to see it on
the ice and in action, right. Yeah. No, I mean if
their goalie was unbelievable that Saturday night, he played, he played an incredible
I mean, it could have beena five to one game, easy,
But I was just really proud withhow our guys responded, you know,

(04:51):
less than twenty four hours after droppingone that we should never drop, you
know, I mean That's when youknow you have good leadership and you have
a backbone and and a room fullof kids that really care about doing things
the right way, and the waythey responded was really impressive. I'm just
curious. Did you get to seeTeddy logerback at all during that series?
I saw him. I gave hima pat on the button and a hello

(05:14):
after the second game. But youknow, like it was good to see
him. He's an unbelievable kid andhopefully he does well there. Yeah,
which it came the best. Look. Miami is a team that you had
never played prior to that series, one you will see pretty much every year.
As ASU joins the NCHC next season, it's likely will head back to
Oxford next year. In fact,so at this point, ASU has traveled
to seven of the eight NCCHC schools, with North Dakota being the exception.

(05:39):
Does it help it all to geta lay of the land, understand the
environments, the type of fan basesthese schools have before you'll be entering at
the conference next man. By thispoint, we know we know what we're
getting into. We've played all theNCHC teams, we just haven't been to
North Dakota. We've played them,we know it's going to be incredibly difficult
to go to Grand Forks and playthem there. So you know, we

(06:00):
know what we're getting into, andwe're excited to get into that next chapter.
Right now, we're obviously just focusedon trying to continue to win some
games here as an independent this seasonand get into the tournament and keep pushing
forward. This might be a questionfor for maybe later on in the season,
but as you look at next seasongetting into the NCCH, is it

(06:20):
a thing where you're gonna have tolearn how to adapt and play their style
of play or do you want themto adjust to the sun Devil way of
playing hockey. I think it's alittle of both, you know, I
mean learning what it takes day inand day out, and to play in
the league and get points and climbup standings and you know, do those
things. It's going to be excitingto always be competing for a championship no

(06:41):
matter who you play. But butagain it goes back to you know what
we talked about before we went onair, and and and the best teams
are the ones that understand that youhave to play to an identity, no
matter who you play, you haveto really buy into what your identity is
no matter who you play. Thatway, you don't go up and down
based on who you're playing. Ithink that's one of the strengths of being

(07:04):
in Independent for eight years is youknow, it's really allowed us to understand
how important that is because as anindependent, your schedules like this. You
know, you got Stonehill brand newprogram. The next weekend you're playing you
know, arguably the best team inthe country in Denver, so you know,
then you have Anchorage come in,and then you have Providence come in,
who's one of the top five teamsin the country. So you know,

(07:27):
as an independent, it's so important, you know, to understand it
doesn't matter who you play, youhave to play to your identity, even
if you're playing the NCCHC referees. But I won't get too much into that.
All right, let's talk about thispast weekend against stone Hill. Skyhawks
came into the series at oh andseven, did walk out at oh to
nine, which is on its facegood good news. That means good things

(07:47):
two wins for the sun Devils, but that doesn't paint the picture of what
happened in game one took a thirdperiod comeback and an overtime winner to secure
that victory. How did your teamget in the position of needing to score
three times in the third to getthat game too? They thought it was
gonna be easy. They didn't playto an identity, you know, and
that that's what happens when when youdon't. If you think there's a night

(08:11):
off in college hockey, there's not. You know, we talked about it.
The portal has changed college hockey. We didn't have it when we started
a program. We didn't have theability to go grab twenty kids that have
Division one hockey experience to put ona roster. All these teams now,
do you know? And and sothey're all good. They're not bad hockey
teams. They're gonna if you don'tshow up to play, they're gonna scare

(08:33):
you. And some are gonna bea you know, and and and Denver
is a team that two weeks agofound that out. They played Augustana,
who's a first year program, andthey lost in a shootout. So you
know, it goes down as atie. But everybody's good. So so
you have to play to your identity. You have to know what that identity
is and and our guys didn't doit Friday. You complimented two guys in

(08:56):
the post game on Friday, BrandendonChambers, two guys that you've got in
the portal, veteran guys in collegehockey. How big have they been to
understanding it's hard to win in collegehockey and relaying that style of play to
the rest of the guys. They'vebeen rocks. They've been unbelievable in every
way, just just big, hard, veteran presences that you know, I

(09:16):
really thought both played well Friday, but Brian Chambers in particular, you just
do something about his game in thatthird period that he wasn't gonna let us
lose, you know, and youcould feel that. And it's always good
to have those guys on your side. So we're really thrilled that they're here
and they're doing a great job. There are a huge reason why we are

(09:37):
six one on one. One topicwe've touched on a lot, and you
just alluded to it and your lastfew answers is the parody in college hockey,
and I know you have a frontrow seat to it. One weekend,
your team dominates number fifteen. MaryMack a few weeks later, supposedly
struggling stone Hill gives a SUO runfor its money. It reaffirms that anything
could happen on any given night.Do you think your team understands that has

(10:01):
gotten that message now through eight games? I think so. I think it's
prevalent in college sports, you know. I mean, look at like college
basketball just started. James Madison justbeat the fourth ranked team in Michigan State
on the road last night. Youknow, so it happens everywhere you look.
And in college hockey it's even moreprevalent. Because there are only sixty

(10:22):
three teams. There's more good playersthan there are stalls. I've said that
from day one, so you know, there's just so many good players that
don't get a chance to play Divisionone because there's not enough spots. So
everybody's good. And now with theportal and the fifth year for one more
year, these startup programs have ahuge advantage that we didn't have, and
it's great for them because they canbe competitive right away. Lyndon Wood,

(10:46):
the second year program, I wentinto Ohio State and tied them this year.
So you see it across the board. There are no nights off it's
just that simple. Is that somethingyou have to have a mentality going into
the season, the understanding of that, or is that something you can learn
throughout a season to play the team, not necessarily the logo, you know?
And how do you teach that asa coach. It's just hammering home

(11:09):
an identity, you know. Andthat was one thing we really tried to
do early with this group was establishwhat our identity was going to be and
then address that every single day.Every single day we talk about it,
we address it. And that wasthe message Saturday morning is you have to
play to our identity. So itdoesn't matter who you play. Whether it's

(11:31):
Stonehill, whether it's Never, whetherit's Arizona's club team, it doesn't matter.
And that was why I was excitedto play the exhibition game against Arizona.
Was like, Hey, we're gonnaplay our way. It doesn't matter
who we're playing tonight. It doesn'tmatter if they're club. That was the
quote, the quote that got blowncompletely out of proportion. It had nothing
to do with disrespecting Arizona. Butit doesn't matter if you're a club team.

(11:52):
It doesn't matter if you're a varsityteam. It doesn't matter if you're
the little sisters of the poor. You have to play a certain way.
When you put on our jersey, you play that way, you know.
So we're still working on that.I really believe we have the group of
kids that will figure that out soonerthan later and play to that identity.
And it seems like you have thetalent too, So as soon as they

(12:13):
figure that part out, I thinkeverything is just going to start to click.
Yes, there have been quite afew miles Stones lately, both individually
and as a team. First collegiategoals for guys like Anthony Daud Cole Gordon,
and the first and second and thirdcareer starts for goaltender Gibson Homer.
For Gibbey in particular, what haveyou seen from him in his first three
games? I thought. I thoughtGibbey's first start at Miami was his best.

(12:37):
He was tremendous and calm, andhis hands are out in front and
he just controlled the game really well. The Friday night against stone Hill,
he was a little bit I thinkbeing at home in front of the big
crowd and the nerves kind of gotto him a little bit. He made
some big saves down the stretch whichyou want to see, which didn't surprise

(12:58):
me because he competes so hard. And then Saturday he turned back into himself.
He had a he had a good, good game Saturday and didn't see
a ton of action, had somebig saves early, and then after that
we we I thought, played prettywell. Knowing what you have in Gibbey,
Now, what does that do foryou as a program, and how
you deal with the balance balance?Yeah, balancing him and and TJ.

(13:20):
Something talter in terms of TJ's Uh, you know you want to have him
ready for the postseason. Yeah,I mean, I mean we were trying
to get to the postseason, right, that's the goal. And and and
we got we got we got awaywith it. I mean Gibby. Gibby
got us a tie at Miami andwe probably should have got a win.
And he got us two wins thisweekend. So you know, what we've
done and how we've managed it hasworked out. TJ will we'll be back

(13:41):
in net obviously Friday, and we'reexcited for that. He's gonna be well
rested, he's gonna be mentally ready, and and he's probably gonna see more
rubber than our guys have seen allyear. Because Denver's very good, so
he's going to be ready to go. And we know how good TJ is.
He's our rock, he's our backbone, and he'll be ready to go.
All right. We're looking forward toit. Eight games under Arizona State's

(14:03):
belt and they won't complain too muchabout a six to one to one record
to open the season. But plentymore work to be done, and it
does not get any easier as thealways dangerous Pios come to Tempe this weekend.
That one will be bound to bea fun series. When we return
to Hell Frozen Over on this Tuesdaynight, Coach Powers is back with us

All right, Coach Greg Powers backwith us now switching things up today

(18:12):
because the Seattle Kraken are in townand former Sun Devil goaltender Joey Decord is
set to make the start in netSo you're heading over to Mullet right after
this segment finishes up. Pretty coolto watch one of your former superstars play
at the rink that he helped tobuild. Yeah, it's going to be
incredible. We're excited for Joey.We had Joey come talk to the guys
this morning and he did a greatjob. It was great to see him

(18:36):
and the whole staff is going tobe at the game tonight. Hopefully some
players will go to if they gottickets and go support him. But he
did. That's what I think isso special about tonight is Mullet Arena does
not exist if not for players likeJoey to Cord who you know. And
that's what I explained to the playersthis morning. Joey came here was a
second over official visit that we hadat ASU and he came here and committed

(18:59):
here before we ever played a DivisionOne game, before Mullet was was a
was a was a pipe dream atbest. And and the success that he,
you know, uh had for ourprogram, and then our program have
because of him, is why Mullettexists and why the Coyotes are playing there.
So it's really exciting to see him. Played him tonight. Remind me
he was here with the team lastyear, right, but he didn't start,

(19:22):
Is that right? He didn't start, but he he he. I
think they put him in for likethe last minute, and then he started
the next night in Vegas. Soso he's excited. You know, he
knows how important he is to usand our success and and our growth,
and and we're excited for him togo get that experience tonight. So cool
to see. I know you'll bea cheering loud for him as well,
hopefully a lot of the current playerswho are building this program. All right,

(19:45):
back to this current program. Youmade some lineup changes this past weekend
for various reasons. I'm curious ifyou couldn't walk us through your thinking.
How do you think guys like ColeGordon, Cole Helm we saw for a
game Tucker Nests we've been seeing recentlyand so on, how did they do
against Stonetop. Yeah, everybody didfine. I think the guys that were
in and out actually, you know, you know played well. You know,

(20:10):
we're trying to get young guys inand get them some experience and see
what they have. Cole Gordon waswas really good, you know, he
he he didn't get a ton oftime Friday because we fell behind. And
he's not a guy you're gonna putout there to to go get three goals
for you. But he's just akid that that you win with. You
know. He he wins draws,he's he's big, he's he he's good

(20:33):
defensively. You know, I justtrust him. You know, he had
a huge shorthanded goal on Saturday,So he's He's a kid that I think
you're going to see a lot moreof. And and there's guys that that
you know, as we continue togo, we're going to lean on.
But we're deep, we're healthy, and we're six one and one. So
it's hard to make wholesale changes whenyou know you're winning. Guys just have

(20:56):
to stick it out, keep workinghard every day. What do you think
of real quick, Alex? Whatdo you think of and it's a five
minute major? I mean I thinkit's a it's a fair call, right,
you don't disagree with the call itself? No, I mean, cold
plays hard, right, and Idon't I don't want him to take Logs
off the fire because he gives usthat he plays with that identity that we're
trying to get our guys to playwith. He's he's he's hard, he's
fast, and he and he justplays you know, with with he plays

(21:19):
heavy. You know. So itcertainly was I think a good call and
and one he can learn from. But you know, we won that game
large in part because he was sogood. You've referenced to being nine deep
on the defensive side of things. So what goes into making the difficult decision
to choose your six or seven guys? It's hard because we have nine guys

(21:41):
that I trust and and that canplay, you know. And you know,
we finally got Kid Alami in onSaturday, and he did some nice
things. You know. I mean, he's he's long, he's athletic.
You know, Tucker is a guythat that's been in and out and he's
big and heavy and strong. Youknow. We rested Timmy over the weekend

(22:03):
and and so we're deep. We'redeep, you know, And it's nice
when you're deep and you're winning.And it's hard too, as a coach
to again make you know, wholesalechanges and get guys in, you know,
when when you're winning games. Soyou know, we'll we'll just keep
plugging away and figure it out.On Saturday, in particular, I noticed
that you guys really threw a tonof shots on net, which is something

(22:26):
we saw in the first few series, right against Mary mag even against Northern
Michigan. Do you feel like youroffense is getting back to that blue collar,
hard news mentality where shots on netturn into second chances which often turn
into gold on the shot volume isalways good. Pup possession is really good,
you know. So I don't believewe've been out shot in any game

(22:48):
this year. So that's the eightgames. That's pretty impressive, you know.
I mean, we really focused moreon keeping the puck out of our
net more than anything, and ourguys have done that. They bought into
good defensive hockey. I think Fridaywe got really loose against that team and
allowed a lot of adam in rushes. They didn't have a lot of zone
time, not a lot of shots. But you know, it's you know,

(23:12):
shots on goal doesn't necessarily translate topart heavy fast, you know,
but so far as is. Youknow, through eight games you can't complain
with the results. I feel likeTyler Gratton has kind of set the tone
of having net front presence, gettingthe gritty goals, being able to push
guys around in front. Does havingyour captain buying into that and showcasing that

(23:33):
make it easier on buy in fromthe other guys, Oh for sure.
Maybe you know Gratz just plays theright way. You know, he does
what he's asked to do, andhe understands what it takes to win.
He came from a great program,he contributed greatly to that program. He
came here to win, and he'sour captain for a reason, so he
knows what it takes. This isnot a question. It's really just a

(23:56):
comment because I need you to knowmy feeling about this. I was ranted
to to Alex about this in Gameone against stone Hill when they went up
to nothing. Their second goal,if you remember, it was a long
outlet pass to a hangar behind yourlast d man and then he had a
bit of a breakaway. I hatehanging in hockey. I think it's such
a lazy way to play, butI get it from stone Hill because they

(24:18):
need to find ways to win right. If you look at it that way
too, well, Stone Hills, you got to respect the way how they
went about. They played to winright, and it didn't necessarily play in
a fashion that's gonna win sustainably becausethey cheated for offense the entire weekend,
you know, And we pre scoutedthat. We had a feeling they would

(24:40):
do that. Dana's dad coaches ateam. He knew they would do that.
So you have to respect the factthat they went for it, and
they didn't just sit back and playa conservative movie. But they cheated all
weekend, you know, and itgave us trouble because we try to play
an honest game and they did not. And and you have to get really

(25:00):
good goaltending when you cheat it,and they did. Their kids Saturday was
unbelievable. He played, and heplayed, He played tremendously and held them
in it and they could have beena six to seven gold game easily,
and and it wasn't because him wellI don't know if that's hockey, but
they tried to pull him at thelast minute and he like wasn't paying.
It's pretty funny, all right,Let's let's get to this weekend, serious
familiar foe comes to town, butDenver Pioneers once again among the best teams

(25:26):
in college hockey. The Pios havean identical record to as U six one
and one up to this point. They're coming off a series sweep over nc
HC rival Colorado College. For thosewho aren't familiar, what can we expect
from Denver this weekend? No,They're they're good. They're they're they're arguably
the best team of the country. They went on the road, they barely
lost the Providence who's really good, and then they beat Boston College, So

(25:48):
you know, they're they're unbelievable. You know, we're gonna have to be
our very best to compete and geta win, and our guys know that,
and we're really excited for the challenge. So, you know, we'll
see how what have programs like Denvermeant to your program being willing to play
you guys ten times before this season, and then you guys are going to
be Conference bos come next year.Yeah, I mean, they they've been

(26:10):
great to us, you know,I mean, we've become kind of a
nice regional relationship, and I knowDavid carl And and Denver really supported us
going into the NCCHC to get anotherregional team to play in the pod,
and it's worked out really well.So you know, we we have a
great relationship with him. We respectthem greatly. It's hard not to when

(26:32):
you when you hang the eight nationalchampionships from the rafters and you know they're
they're they're a great program. Quickly. I've asked you this four years in
a row now, dating back towhen I was a student covering the team,
and I've always liked your answer. Is there a rivalry brewing with Denver?
Can you consider them a rival?I don't think we've gained that that
respect. I don't. I don'tthink we've earned that respect, you know.

(26:53):
I mean we want to be rivalswith them because of the regional thing.
But again, they have eight bannershanging some the rafters and we we
don't have any. So you know, we have to earn that that rivalry
and be really competitive with them tohave that rivalry, and that's our goal.
Alex tried to buy David carl Beerabout that Saturday of last series last

(27:17):
season and what you do? Hesaid no, he said no, he
would take it. Did he knowdid he know you were at the a
SU but we were both together.Yeah, Tyler D's he's a He's actually
a really good guy. So no, he was very nice. He was
just that's what they say about NorthDakota fans. I will not be buying
anybody from Grand Fort se beer.He probably just didn't think you're a very

(27:38):
good look at facts bar right oncampus. All right. A reporter asked
you this in your post game pressconference on Saturday, but I want to
follow up. My blood still boilswhen I think about that so called mile
high stick call in Denver last year. I know it's one moment in time.
Calls can go against you sometimes, but have you thought about that anymore

(28:00):
over the last few days? Andhave you ever been more grateful to have
big ten refs at home? No, you know, it's I haven't thought
about it, And it was,it was. It was one of the
Obviously we vehemently agree disagree with thecall, but they all played us,
you know, And and the reasonthe only reason we're in that game is
because of our goaltender, and wefelt bad for our goaltender. But at

(28:21):
the end of the day, theydeserve to win the game, and they
did. We even referenced that onthe Miami pre game show because one of
the officials was the same guy thatmade that call. In general, anyway,
you're welcoming in one of the bluebloods to your new arena. How
cool is that? I think it'sgonna be great. I think they're excited
to get here because they know they'regoing to come here every year, so
they're they're they're excited to see whatmul It's all about and experience it and

(28:45):
see it and you know, experiencehow good of a trip it is for
teams to come into play us andstay in a hotel that that they can
walk to the rink from and it'sa It's a really good trip for a
visiting team. So I think neveris excited for it. We talked about
this a bit in the first segment, but I want to chat about goaltending.
He made it clear since the preseasonyou were going to play Gibson Homer

(29:07):
quite a bit because he still putsyou in a position to win and to
balance out TJ Sempim Felters playing time. You said it before, but for
those who didn't hear, what's yourplan this weekend? In the goaltending space.
Well, TJ, I'll start Fridayand we'll see where it goes from
there. You know. I mean, TJ's still our guy, and he
knows that, and and then Gibbyknows that. And again Gibby did his

(29:27):
job. Gibby spelled TJ. Itjust felt right to give him those starts
because he's worked so hard for them, and he did what he needed to
do. He held Miami to agoal in the road, and we won
two games with him in Neta home, so you know, we mission accomplished
in every way. Is there anyworry about rust with TJ? Given that

(29:47):
he's been two weeks in a rowwithout a start, No good, He's
easy, love him easy, allright. In ASU's ten games, all
the time he gets Denver, thePioneers have scored first six times, six
times, and they've won each ofthose games. Considering what we've seen from
your guys this year, how importantis it to get off to a fast
start, and not only that, but then keep competing for a full sixty

(30:07):
It's just, you know, it'sit's big, you know, But you
know we've been in every situation througheight games, so whatever whatever happens,
happens. You obviously want to getoff to a great start, and we're
going to you know, stress theimportance of that. But you also look
at you know, Denver against Augustana. They went up three to nothing and
Augustana found a way to climb backinto the game. So it can be

(30:27):
done if you don't. So youhave to draw on experience, and we've
been through everything both ways at thispoint through eight games and had a lot
of success. So that's that's theway we got to play it. When
you look at the scope of theseason overall, how important is this weekend
final year as an independent you wantto sack those pair wise points up.
I mean, they're huge opportunities, right and if if you can get a

(30:48):
win or even two against a teamlike this, it's going to be the
gift that kind of keeps on giving. So again, like you guys always
get from me, we're focused onFriday, only Friday, and hopefully it
goes our way. All right, let me finish by asking you about Saturday,
then, curious about your decision. If it was your decision to play
Saturday's game at five pm, Isthis simply the time that the game was

(31:12):
slotted in, or is the ideato attract more fans with an earlier part
drop. Well, we've moved Saturdaystarts to five when there's not an NHL
doubleheader, so the majority of ourSaturdays are all at five. I think
that you know, it does twothings. It allows visiting teams to get
out on Saturday night, especially oncecoming from the East coast, so it

(31:32):
allows us to attract more teams tocome in. Stonehill flew out on Saturday
night, Merrimack flew out on Saturdaynight, Northern Michigan did not. And
it allows those kids to get backhome they are students and allows them to
get back home Sunday, get afull day Sunday at home. And yes,
I think we'll draw better with youngerkids being able to come to games

(31:56):
earlier at five o'clock. We didit a couple times last year to EXPERI
we liked how it felt. Theshorter turnaround was good. So most of
our Saturdays are at five, andthey're done that way on purpose. I'm
pretty excited for it, all right. Coach Greg Powers with the lowdown.

Hockey, Arizona State has had severalplaymakers who seem to be in the right
place at the right time, butit's not by chance. The latest addition
to that list is a newcomer toTempee, but a veteran in this league.
Brian Chambers now suits up in theMaroon and Gold after four years at
UMass loll and he becomes one ofthe key components in Arizona State's lineup.
Brian Chambers joins Alex Coil and Meon hell Frozen over now. Brian,

(36:44):
great to officially meet you. Thanksfor being here tonight. Yeah, Tyre,
I appreciate the introductor. Is thatgood enough for you to cover the

You can introduce yourself to all theseSun Devil fans. All right, First
things first, give us a vibecheck in the Sun Devil locker room right
now. Six to one and onehas to feel pretty darn good, does
it not. I mean, yeah, it's great. Six one on one

(37:06):
is definitely a great record if youlook at it. I mean, well,
past weekend wasn't the best hockey fromus, but we found a way
to get it done. I don'tthink we're all too happy about how we
played, but like I said,we found a way to get it done.
But now we're looking forward to Denver, so I guess it's a bit
more serious and a bit more intense. Yeah, isn't that the truth?
All right, let's get to abit of your background. You grew up

(37:28):
in Weymouth, Is that right?Weymouth? Yeah? That's use okay and
funny enough, only about forty minutesfrom Stone Hills campus. Oh yeah.
Now you know how much research Idid for this segment. I really I
looked into you. But forty minutesfrom stone Hill? How far is it
from Lowell Hour? Okay, soroughly the I guess not a huge state.
You played for Sioux Falls in theUSHL before going to UMass LOLL for

(37:50):
your undergrad years. What went intoyour decision to transfer to ASU for your
final year? I mean, thefifth year option is something not a lot
of people, and I'm very happythat I had it, very grateful.
I obviously grew up in Massachusetts.I was there for four years, so
I thought it was time that Ikind of grow as a person, maybe
look to go somewhere else. AndI had started talking to coach Powers,

(38:14):
and I mean, I just thoughtit was a no brainer to come out
to a SU and play hockey atthe Desert, especially with what he's provided
for this team. And the newrink like it just felt like an automatic.
Yes, you're one of the fewnewer guys, either freshman or Trench
was coming in. They actually gotto play at Oceanside as an away player.
What was that experience like for you? It was cool. I mean

(38:36):
I loved coming out here and enjoyit and enjoying the weather and and all
that. I mean, all thefamily came out, even my friends came
out to watch watch me play thatweekend. But not the best barn,
Not gonna lie, but uh,I had a great time. I think
we lost the first game, wewon the second game. It was a
good weekend. It was in acool experience. It was to open up

(38:59):
the season two years ago. Tyler, Yeah, that was I was gone
back then. I was in Ohiopersonally, so I don't remember those years.
But then again, as we learnedthis weekend, I don't remember what
I had for breakfast this morning. We'll move on you there. Let's dive
into your individual play for a minute. You are tied for the team lead
with Matthew copper Rude in points witheight through eight games, seven of which

(39:21):
are assists. What's been working foryou offensively so far? I mean,
I just play with great players, like having Cop on my wing, also
have the new transfer and team captainTyler Gratt and on my other wing.
I just give them to the pock, get to the right areas and as
you can see, they're scoring thegoals. I'm making the passes to play
with the guy like like copper rudright, especially with what he's done here

(39:44):
at this program. How lethal heis on the power play. How does
that open up everybody else on theice? I mean it's it's awesome.
Like obviously teams have to know, like no, he's out there and lock
them down, so it opens upmore areas and the others and the ice,
and like this, for him beingable to score the way he does,
it gives us confidence, It givesus leads in the games. This

(40:07):
is just huge and yeah, likejust a huge help to the team for
sure. You like laying checks onpeople. Yeah, yeah, we've noticed
that. It's pretty noticeable. Itonly gets more noticeable as the weeks go
on. I don't know if you'llbe able to top that. Cole Gordon
one, Yeah, I know thatwas a nice hit. Ones. Yeah,
of course he was taking up forteammates and in your preseason Player of

(40:30):
the Year. Oh okay, letyou forget that all right. Not sure
if you're aware of this since it'syour first year here in ten people,
but one area where ASU has struggledhistorically, especially in the last few years,
has been in the face off circle. We know how important face off
wins are because they start possessions typicallyresult in more puck control. Overall.
You lead the team in face offpercentage and you actually rank fourteenth in the

(40:52):
nation in draws one. How importantis that role for you? Yeah,
I've learned as I've played the gamelonger and longer and longer. You're like,
face offs are very important because youget the puck, you get possession.
My mindset is kind of just like, do whatever to win. Take
it a little bit personal to aOnce you start losing, you really don't
want to keep losing. But uh, especially on the power play, the

(41:15):
penalty killing and even more important andover time, like, possession is so
key. So the more you havethe puck, the more you're able to
make plays, and the more youare but score goals. I'm just curious
when when you line up for aface off, I know everybody does it.
Differently. Some guys try to gobetween their legs, some guys push
it to one side or the other. What I've noticed and correct me if
I'm wrong, is you're you're kindof on the forehand pushing it. Am

(41:37):
I wrong about that? Am Iseeing it? Well? My hand's turned
over, okay, So like Ihave all my weight towards the ground,
so once that puckets the ground,I'm able to put everything I have into
it and try to smack it back, back it back. Okay, So
you are always going back. Yeah, that's the one planning of Tylake,
and I'm trying to take advice forsure. Definitely we gotta win some face
offs, you and me. Theface offs in the overtime segment of the

(41:58):
post game show. Sometimes it getsa little lame, but overall, playing
with the group right coming into thisseason, we heard how close this group
was, how good of the summerthe group did. But now that you
guys are eight games in, what'sit like to play with this group?
I mean, it's unbelievable. Fromthe goalies up, TJ's been great,
Givey Gibby, it's an awesome defensemanhave been super sound, and the forwards

(42:22):
are finally clicking, and I justfeel like we're coming together and as the
record shows, we're doing pretty well. I've got another stat to throw your
way. You're second on the teamand plus minus rate at a plus five
on the season, and that essentiallymeans you're on the ice when good things
are happening. What's your mindset whenyou get on the ice for a shift,

(42:43):
no matter how short or how long, and how are you trying to
generate shots on net and ultimately opportunitiesto score goals? I think a bit
for me because of my where Iwas at before the past four years,
it's kind of defense first. ButGreg guy, I guess it's trying to
be put more offense into my game, which is great. So lately it's
been trying to keep the puck awayfrom our defensive zone and once I get

(43:06):
to the ozone and try to makeplays and try to score goals. One
of my favorite questions to ask guysnow that Coach Powers has kind of made
it. The theme is the ideaof playing heavy. You seem to set
that tone on Friday, hard fastand the heavy mentality. What goes into
that for you? What's your definitionof playing heavy? It's just getting pucks
down low and being like being adog on the puck, being a hound

(43:29):
on the puck, like you,you don't want to lose it. You
don't want to get the team theother the other chance to play with it.
And I guess it's like just doingeverything you can be heavy. I
guess, yeah, exactly. Weonly got another minute or so here,
so I do want to get acouple more questions. Okay, and I'm
switching gears here for a moment totalk about academics. I'm sure your favorite

(43:49):
topic of all time. Yeah, you're in the graduate Sports Law and Business
program. You're at ASU. Haveyour class has been What have you learned?
What have you enjoyed so much orso far this semester? My class
has been great and something I reallytake pride in and it gives me confidence
away from the rink. You know, it's not just hockey. Hockey hockey.
Every day I get to learn newthings. I'm in an amateur sports
law class. I'm in sports analyticsclass, and it's just like obviously,

(44:14):
like you get caught up. Youlove hockey so much, it's everything you
want to do. But when you'reable to go to the classroom and learn
new things. It's it's very interestingand I gotta I gotta shout out the
assistant dean and the executive directord AaronHernandez. He's been great to me.
And they're doing a Salek speaker seriesand next week on November fourteenth, just
talking about how hockey belongs in thedesert Desert. Greg will be there.

(44:37):
I'll be there and like, Ihope everyone listen listen to this right now,
will come to it. It's gonnabe a great to the public.
Yeah, open you do have torsvv oh yeah, so that's I mean,
such a good program. I tooka couple of classes through the Sports
Law and Business program when I wasthere. Why, like, what peaked
your interest to go into something likethat. You mentioned you love hockey,

(44:59):
love sports. That seems like theobvious next step. Yeah, you love
sports, and uh, I mean, obviously sports has been a huge thing
for growing up. But it's notgonna last forever, right, you know,
you got to you gotta do somethingin the classroom. And I'm not
a huge fan of learning about economicsand different degree, different type of stuff,
So now I can learn about sports. This is phenomenal. I get

(45:21):
to go to class and actually reallyenjoy what I'm learning. Man, I
got a ton more questions for you, but our producer's telling us we have
to go to brains, so we'llhave to bring you on again later on
in the season. So appreciate.I appreciate you guys having me seriously.
Now you're a plus six of theseason. All right, Brian Chambers adding
a lot of production to the topof the Sun Devil lineup. He's a
welcome sight here in Tempe, alreadyat the forefront of the stat sheet,

(45:42):
and I'm sure he'll only continue toget better as the season carries on.

be tuning in. So you gotone, one, a few, or
one listener there, we are, whatever you want to call it, all
right, plus one add to onemy plus mind. This is going great,
huge. All right, let's startwith what we saw from ASU hockey

(50:15):
the last two weekends. First,a frustrating start in that Miami series.
You and I kind of in shockabout what we saw on Friday night.
Not to rehash it, because lifemoves on. But from a four to
one lead to a five to fourovertime loss about fourteen minutes of game time
really tough to swallow. No,it is, but I think it's about
how you bounce back. We willget to more on that in a moment.

(50:36):
But if you have that, youwant to have a learning experience early
in the season. This is whenyou would want to have something like that.
And it helped them out on Fridaynight here they were down for to
one in a similar situation. Theyknew that they could trust their the way
they play and come back and wina game. Yeah, not an insurmountable
lead, right, and Game twoin Oxford much better. Gibson Homer was

(50:57):
unbelievable. I mean, he wasfantastic in his first collegiate start. Didn't
get the win. Game officially wentdown as a tie, but that was
a great defensive battle, great goaltendingbattle, and the Devils could walk out
of Goggin with their heads held high. Yeah, and you look at it
from the pairwise perspective, it waspositive right going in. If you know
you would have said that you gotsome pairwise results in both games, you'd
feel really happy about that. Theyplayed to their more to their identity on

(51:21):
that Saturday night and you know itjust ran into a really good goaltender.
As coach Polerson, I think it'sworth chatting about some of the milestones we've
seen over the last couple of series. I mentioned Gibson Homer's first few collegiate
starts and first win. If you. Guys made their debuts as Sun Devils,
including Kata Lami, your preseason playerof the year. Last Saturday,

(51:43):
Brian Chambers had his first goal withASU, Anthony Dawd Cole Gordon got their
first collegiate goals. Overall, itseems like things are clicking and the guys
who need to get hot are atthis moment showcasing the depth right that we
looked at coming in and it's goodto have the results that they have had
with maybe some of those guys notperforming to what we expected in terms of

(52:06):
the stat sheet, right. StatSheetdoesn't win you games. It just is
the product of the game. Butit's good to see those especially Anthony Doubt.
I mean, the way he hasplayed has been phenomenal, but to
see him finally get on the scoresheet a couple of points in both games.
If I, if I remember correctly. Just he's a very talented,
offensive minded defenseman, and he's gonnabe a catalyst on that power play unit.

(52:28):
Maybe the second line with Tim Lovellback this weekend, but he's gonna
he's gonna play a huge role.Yeah, it's a key point. I
know some people were asking, weare expecting to see Tim Lovell back in
the line. I'm not injured.Just again, roster maintenance is the name
of the game. We saw whathappened last year, and I know it
sounds like some sort of an excuse, but I really do think it's an
important thing that coach Powers and hiscoaching staff are focusing on this year.

(52:50):
Is that roster maintenance. You needto build durability. The college hockey season
is longer than any other college sport, and you need to be able to
endure a full six months plus ifyou're to compete into April, and when
you have the depth like this teamdoes, you can do that. You
can you know, you don't wantto take anybody lightly, And I don't
think that was the situation. Itwas just this is an opportunity in the
schedule with the no off weekends untilthe weekend before Christmas, to give guy

(53:14):
a couple You heard what Coach Powerstold us earlier in the show about his
approach to goaltending this weekend against Denver. We know TJ will start Friday,
TBD on Saturday. What are youhoping to see from TJ on Friday?
Being chrisp I think the first tofive minutes is going to be interesting.
You know, I asked Coach Powersabout rust. He said, no,
no chance of that, not worriedabout that at all, which you know,

(53:36):
hopefully that is the exact case.I know, talk to him today,
he's ready to get back out there. He's like, you know,
to be honest, and you knowhe understands the situation. But it's tough
to watch your guys go out andbattle and not be able to battle with
them. But so he's going tobe ready to go, and I'm excited
to see him. You know,as Coach Power said again, he's going
to be facing more rubber than hehas expected this season. And he's such

(53:57):
a team player he would he wouldstep out there for you know, two
games in a row if he neededto. Like, he's just a team
player who knows that he needs to. Again, it's all about endurance being
able to kind of rely on himthroughout the course of a season and perhaps
into the tournament. If they're ableto get that, it wouldn't be a
complete episode. If I didn't spenda few moments talking to you about the

(54:20):
Sun Devil power play. I thoughtyou were gonna mention North Dakota. But
yeah, tell, we already talkedabout that. They're nine for thirty eight
on the power play conversion so farthis year, good for fourteenth in the
nation. A bit of a mixedbag last weekend against stone Hill, but
they did score on the man advantagein both games. What do you think
is working for that unit right now? Just how deep they are and how
amazing some of their guys are.Right, Chambers mentioned the impact Gratton has

(54:42):
made. You have Matthew copperrud whois number one in power play goals active
in the NCAA right now, setthe record in the program scored again.
You have offensive minded defensemen to createendowed and Timothy level. You have the
Jacksons, which you know when youget this far down the list and you
have to the Jacksons, and thenCylinger. Right, there's so much talent
on the power play creates so muchspace and it's really hard to defend.

(55:07):
Let's chat about this weekend, specifically, Devil's welcome in Denver, very familiar
opponent that has had ASU's number overthe years. ASU just has one win
and one tie all time against thePioneers. What do you see being the
key to a couple of Arizona Statevictories this weekend. It's gonna take that
Sun Devil identity, believe it ornot. Back when I was a student,
I called their lone victory. Itwas very exciting at Ocean Side Ice

(55:30):
Arena, and it was gritty, right, it was physical. There were
some images of guys, you know, pushing faces after the whistle into the
ice, which you know goes tothat identity. You don't want to do
anything that's going to get you sentto the box. But having the identity
this is our house. First timeyou could see my old arena. We're
gonna play our weight, We're notgoing to play the Denver Well, did
you get the game puck from that? No? No, no, no,
