Speaker 1 (00:00):
You're listening to Hell Frozen Over with Sun Devil head
hockey coach Greg Powers live from the new Vanetsia's Pizza
Presto at ASU Campus on Fox Sports nine ten and
the Ihearts Radio lip. Welcome to the course light first
period of Hell Frozen Over now alongside Coach Powers, the
voice of Sun Devil Hockey, Tyler Paley.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
It's a good view from the top of the conference
standings for Sun Devil Hockey, winners of ten out of
their last eleven. Just about everything seems to be clicking.
They're almost fully healthy. Each phase of the game is
improving every weekend, and they're finding different ways to win
hockey games. But look, the job is far from finished
as conference play rolls on here in mid January. With that,

(00:44):
we say hi, everybody, welcome into season three, episode five
of Hell Frozen Over, Live tonight and all season long
from the new Vanetsia's Pizza Presto on campus at ASU
for the next hour here on Fox Sports nine ten
and streaming on the iHeartRadio app. I'm Tyler Paley, the
play by play broadcaster of Sun Devil Hockey. Happy to
have you along as we discussed the team's latest news
and notes. Joining me tonight is Arizona State head coach

(01:07):
Greg Powers and my broadcast partner Alex Coyle. Gentlemen, have
you defrosted from the weekend we just had quite yet?

Speaker 3 (01:15):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (01:15):
I have.

Speaker 5 (01:16):
It's great to be back. No offense to Saint Cloud,
but I'm glad we we only have to go there once.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
Yes, once this year. Yeah, yeah, all right, we have
a lot to catch up on. As usual, we left
off ahead of the North Dakota series, and we know
how that one went. We just got back from Saint Cloud.
A great, a successful weekend up there North Dakota really
maybe the most anticipated series of the season at that point.

(01:41):
Let's start with Game one if you don't mind, of course,
an Arizona State win in that one. Can you recap
kind of how you were able to grind that one out?

Speaker 3 (01:49):
Yeah, I think that's exactly what we did.

Speaker 5 (01:50):
We just played a hard, balanced kind of game and
that warmed down pretty good and went into the third
up of goal, which is you know, been a good
sign for us and was able to you know, we
were able, our guys were able to kind of build
a lead and get a couple there in the third
and it was a big win. It was a great
win for US National TV, a school that probably will

(02:14):
quickly become a rival of ours. Again, we have to
continue to do what we have to do to earn
the right to be called someone's.

Speaker 3 (02:21):
Rival as a new guy in the league.

Speaker 5 (02:22):
But we were we're really excited about that win.

Speaker 6 (02:27):
Well, one thing that's really started to jump out to
me among a ton of other things, but specifically the
freshman defenseman and really how they've grown through the season.
Like there were some struggles early during some of the
losing stretches, but now that you know each of them,
Joe Shelberg, Raising bose Er, Sam Cord have kind of
grown into their roles. What has led to that growth?
And where do you see each of them right now?

Speaker 5 (02:49):
I think you know all four freshmen that that are
you know in the lineup they play a lot.

Speaker 3 (02:53):
Oh yeah, so I mean clearly.

Speaker 5 (02:54):
That's that's that's going to help development and help growth.
And you know, there's still some freshman mistakes from time
to time, but they've limited those as we've gone on.

Speaker 3 (03:05):
But we trust all four of them.

Speaker 5 (03:06):
You know, obviously Patzi plays as much as anybody up front,
and the three freshmen have been tremendous, so you know,
it's it's nice to be able to have what what
is going to be such a nice young corps come up,
you know, and know that they can get it done
for us because you know they're going to be here
for three more years.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
Yeah. I don't want to spend a ton of time
on this, but I was looking forward to asking Gibson
Homer who couldn't make it tonight We have a great
alternate guest and David Haimovich coming up, but question Thank goodness,
but I do want to ask you about, you know,
the the kind of elephant in the room. In that
game one, which was facing off against TJ. Sempton Felter,
you could tell that Ghibby was far more excited and

(03:45):
emotional after that win then we usually see him typically
straight lace composed, whether it's a win or loss. Did
you sense that little added jug for the for the
win over TJ.

Speaker 3 (03:57):
Against Honestly, I don't think our guys really cared.

Speaker 5 (04:00):
You know, you know TJ's gone and and he's gone,
so we don't don't We don't waste our time thinking about,
you know, what's been or what could have been.

Speaker 3 (04:09):
We are focused on now.

Speaker 5 (04:11):
And that's why I think our guys have been so
successful these past you know, a dozen games, is because
they're just they're in the moment, you know, and they're
they're playing for each other. And when you do that,
you know, and you have the talent and the depth
that we have, it's pretty powerful. So I don't think
that was an issue or or anything. You know, we
didn't think twice about it.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
Yeah, worry about the guys in the room currently. Game
two felt different, at least from my vantage point. North
Dakota got off to a good start. Felt like your
team struggled, particularly in the second period, but yet they
were still in a position to win, leading by one
until that last minute goal by Cameron Berg and then
the overtime loss. How do you kind of reconcile us.

(04:51):
You've had a chance to think about it. What you
said was not deserving to win with the chance to
win anyway, you know.

Speaker 5 (04:57):
I mean, special teams is always the great equalized and
in that game, in particular, our penalty kill was very good,
and I mean we took I think seven minor penalties.

Speaker 3 (05:06):
We had no flow on the bench.

Speaker 5 (05:08):
We couldn't get guys into the game that we want
to get into the game because we were taking so
many penalties and they were all just undisciplined penalties, you know,
sticks and getting sticks parallel and not moving our feet
and killing plays in the d zone. So it's just
it was one of those games where we just couldn't
find a way to kind of stay out of the box,
especially in that second period. But what was impressive was

(05:31):
we got the opportunity to come back there in the
third and they took a five minute we scored two
on it, So our special teams put us in a
position even though we never got into any sort of
rhythm five on five to win a game, and obviously
we didn't close it out there, and it was disappointing.

Speaker 6 (05:46):
Yeah, five on five rhythms specifically, like obviously the pain
of taking a penalty, you give the team two minutes
with another guy, but how much more does it add
to the inability of that's also two minutes you can't
get in and start to take it to them in
the offensive zone and getting things deep, getting to the

(06:07):
for check like it felt like that game specifically, since
there were so many you just never had the opportunity
to get to that.

Speaker 5 (06:14):
No, I mean that's that's like a lot of our
best players don't kill up front, you know, and some teams,
and we've had teams where our best players do, and
obviously teams that don't.

Speaker 3 (06:23):
But we've been a really disciplined team.

Speaker 5 (06:25):
So it's a great way to get the benji eker
leagues and the Ryan Alexander's and you know, the Kyle
Smollens into into the game, but in getting them their
reps because they're they're such good they're such good killers.
So it's a really good way to balance kind of
roles and responsibilities if you have bottom six guys that
are great killers. I think it's a huge asset. Sure,

(06:46):
it gives the top guys a chance to get a
little bit of an extra breather. But the downside to
it is in games like that where you take penalty
after penalty after penalty, the top guys are sitting for
five six minutes, you know, and and they get out
of a rhythm and and and and the rest is history.

Speaker 3 (07:01):
So it's a slippery slope.

Speaker 5 (07:03):
But but we we we've been really disciplined, so hopefully
you don't have to face that again.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
Yeah, still one of the most disciplined teams in the
nation based on penalty minutes. All right, so North Dakota ends.
After that, it was Saint Cloud State. First matchup between
the Sun Devils and Huskies since the inaugural Desert Hockey
Classic back in twenty sixteen, and your first road trip
in nearly two months. Game one really a roller coaster.
We were just talking about that before we went on

(07:29):
the air to to say the least up one, down
to and then five unanswered goals to win the game
six to three. I don't even know what my question is, like,
how much resilience did your team show in that way?

Speaker 3 (07:41):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (07:41):
Well, first I'm gonna correct you. It wasn't the inaugural
Desert Classic, demanded Desert Classic.

Speaker 2 (07:45):
Year before that, a River Okay, yeah, Yukon.

Speaker 3 (07:50):
Yale and Michigan Tech.

Speaker 2 (07:51):
But just just just appreciate. Listen, you gotta keep me honest.

Speaker 5 (07:55):
Yeah's you've got to be a history buff here, Tyler.
But but no, it was great to play them again.

Speaker 3 (08:01):
They're a great program.

Speaker 5 (08:02):
They did come down when we moved it to one
year in Prescott and Saint Cloud was in that one.
But yeah, I mean, look, you know, five goals rattled
off on the road down three to one.

Speaker 3 (08:14):
They had a minute of a five on three to
go up four to one. Gibbe stood tall. The kill
was tremendous.

Speaker 5 (08:19):
It got us momentum, got our guys a little bit
of juice on the bench, and once we got that goal,
Kirwin's goal to cut it to three too, you could
sense something was gonna happen, you know, and our guys
just started rolling, you know. And when they started playing
fast and rolling and feeling it with all that extra
space out there, there was a you know, about a
ten minute stretch where we were a lot of fun

(08:41):
to watch in.

Speaker 6 (08:42):
The looking at the resiliency and what you were chatting
about earlier with like how everybody plays with one another
but doing that on the road at one of the
marquee teams in this conference, when you went into the portal, like,
of course you're looking for a great talent that fits,
but specifically, I think you look at some of the
guys you brought in this year, veteran guys that had
played in big conferences and know what to do on

(09:05):
the road when they're in a situation like that. How
valuable have those guys been at creating this pretty good
record away from home.

Speaker 5 (09:11):
They've been obviously very valuid. Look at the statue and
it says all it needs to say. But I think
where all these transfers we brought in have been so valuable,
it's in our room. They're just great kids. You know,
they've really gravitated towards what we stand for as a
program and what our culture stands for, and have come
in and obviously bought into everything that we try to

(09:32):
do and really enhanced what we do in so many ways.
You know, you look at you know, none of those
guys have letters this year, but they're all leaders. You know,
they're all really good leaders. And already schlenes a captain
in any room. He doesn't need a letter to be
a captain. Kerwin is just an unbelievable kid and teammate
that I think the guys all really enjoy being around,

(09:53):
and has already had fourteen goals. Noah Beck obviously in
his fifth year. His numbers and his season speaks for itself.
And then you got Cruise in Bennett and and pav
You know that that are all really high in kids.

Speaker 3 (10:06):
So we knocked it out of the park.

Speaker 5 (10:08):
I think with every single kid that we brought in
to fill a role and give us that experience that
we need to be in the position we're in today.

Speaker 2 (10:15):
I'll just say, a good thing you didn't recruit know
it Beck to be a football player. There's a bit
of an incident on the concourse had a game too,
but we'll just he.

Speaker 3 (10:23):
Could be a little clumsy, all right.

Speaker 2 (10:25):
Game two with with Saint Cloud was it felt much
more even, at least at the beginning. Tied one to
one after two. The turning point, obviously was a major
penalty and game misconduct called against Saint Cloud's Tyson Gross.
Five minute power play led to three ASU goals to
go up four to one. The Huskies would claw back.
They did make it four to three late, but then

(10:46):
it was our Tim Shlaine who sealed the deal with
the empty netter. In situations like those, how critical is
it to play with a little bit of cushion when
the opponent has the ability to make a comeback.

Speaker 7 (10:56):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (10:56):
I mean that was a weird game because you know,
I didn't love how we played. You know, I thought
the energy was low. It was back to back on
a big, big sheet of ice. It's it's weird for
our guys to plan a sheet ice. That's that's that's
that's that that that is that big and uh so,
it's just it's not normal. It doesn't feel it doesn't
feel right. And I thought that I thought that they

(11:17):
were really good Saturday. Yeah, I thought that they did
a really.

Speaker 3 (11:20):
Good job staying above us and slowing us down.

Speaker 5 (11:24):
You know, obviously we're a very fast team to love
to use our team speed.

Speaker 3 (11:27):
And they just kind of sat back.

Speaker 5 (11:29):
They didn't for check much and sat back and really
clogged up neutral ice and limited our our rush opportunities
and our transition opportunities, and did a good job with that,
and I think got us a little bit frustrated.

Speaker 3 (11:40):
And what I liked about our game, though, was that
our guys stuck with it. You know, they stuck with it.

Speaker 5 (11:44):
And and you know, the end of the game obviously
unbelievably well, you know, popping three on that that five
minute major, and and the rest was history.

Speaker 6 (11:54):
You now have three NHC sweeps to this point with
still about half the conference late to go. And when
you especially you look at the two places you've done
it on the road, at Denver and at Saint Cloud State.
Other teams in the conference are not going to get
consistently six points at those two venues. So when you're
going into those type of environments on night two, are

(12:16):
you kind of giving a message to your team like, hey,
like this is a really good position to create some
some of the difference in the conference standings, or is
it just Hey, this is the game we got to play.

Speaker 5 (12:26):
We have an opportunity to get to get six points.
It's huge, you know.

Speaker 3 (12:29):
I mean any six point we can home or on
the road.

Speaker 5 (12:32):
It is hard to come behind this league, and we
have a few of them, so which is exciting, you know,
And it's all all creating separation. You know, at this
point where where where we need to be, Western has
a couple of games in hand, so I think that's
important to note. So we have to continue to just
build and and and and pocket as many points as
we can. You know, CC has already swept us. You know,

(12:54):
we got one point up there, so six points up
for grab, and if we can get six points this weekend,
we can say we took the season series and that'd
be a good thing.

Speaker 2 (13:02):
So you kind of just alluded to it. But but
you sit alone a top the NCCHC, right now, I
know you're not necessarily watching the standings all that closely
in terms of oh we're in first, oh we're in second,
but I trust you know, obviously out tight of a
race it is, really among eight of the nine teams.
What's your assessment of the race for the Penrose Cup

(13:24):
right now?

Speaker 5 (13:24):
Well, I mean there's not much separation top to bottom, right,
I mean one through eight, you know nine, obviously there's
quite a bit one through eight. I think last weekend
there was only six point separation, so it's a little
bit more now, but it's it's right now. It's a
race that you know, one team up top has a
bad weekend, one team at the bottom has a good one,
they're right back in it.

Speaker 3 (13:45):
Yeah, exactly right.

Speaker 5 (13:46):
So it's all about just just building as much separation
as you can with the way our guys are playing,
the confidence that they're playing with. You know, our goal
really going in was the host of playoff series. Obviously
that's still a goal we still have work to do
in order to do that.

Speaker 3 (14:00):
It's it's beyond not a foe con conclusion that we will.

Speaker 5 (14:05):
But but I think just that goal right now, with
as good as our guys have proven we can be
and we are.

Speaker 3 (14:12):
Would be short change in our team. You know. Now
our goal is to win this league.

Speaker 6 (14:16):
Yeah, and again now that you guys are are a
top I was chatting with Kyle Smollen before the game
on Saturday, and he mentioned that, you know, you have
to kind of wear it as an honor being first place,
but you also have to, you know, crank up your
intensity that much more because you're going to be attacked.
You have that target on your back. Is that something
you had to remind of the guys, like, hey, we're
going to get the best shot or was that just

(14:37):
something that the room knew right away.

Speaker 5 (14:39):
I think everyone in the league, you know, the coaches
and teams knew we had a really good team.

Speaker 3 (14:44):
You know. I mean, the media is going to vote
the way the media votes, and it is what it is.

Speaker 2 (14:48):
But Tyler and I called him out when they did that.

Speaker 6 (14:50):
Yeah, yeah, we should get some credit a little bit.

Speaker 2 (14:52):
Huh.

Speaker 3 (14:52):
It is what it is.

Speaker 5 (14:53):
That's why you guys get paid to write and talk,
not coach, but clearly, but you know so so I
don't think we really have caught anyone tremendously off guard.

Speaker 3 (15:04):
I think that some might think.

Speaker 5 (15:06):
We've overachieved a little bit, sure, but you look at
our roster and I just don't see how anyone that
knows personnel could say that we have a really, really
good hockey.

Speaker 2 (15:16):
Team before we go to break one last one for you,
it's an area that's really unquestionably improved from the beginning
of the year until now, and that's our offense. Discounting
the first Air Force game, your team averaged two goals
per game in a stretch where you went two, seven
and one. In the last eleven games, you've averaged four
point four goals per game. How impressed are you with

(15:38):
that offensive turnaround which you told us the floodgates are
going to open eventually, and they did.

Speaker 3 (15:43):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (15:43):
I think we were out shooting teams, we were out
possessing teams. We weren't finding a way to put the
fuck in the net. We weren't getting to the net enough.
We're getting to the net now. We're getting pucks and
bodies to the net, which you need to do at
this level to have sustainable success on offense. And I
think we're, you know, obviously, our powerplay starting to click.

Speaker 3 (16:02):
You know.

Speaker 5 (16:02):
We also, I think the first twelve games the opponent
saved percentage was about a point nine to five.

Speaker 2 (16:07):
Yeah, it was.

Speaker 5 (16:08):
You know, we ran in some really really hot colt
tending every weekend, and I'm sure we will again at
some point. And that's when you got to clamp down
defensively and just you know, wait for your chance and
be opportunistic.

Speaker 3 (16:19):
And that's the other thing we have been. We've been
pretty opportunistic.

Speaker 2 (16:21):
Really good goaltender coming to Tempee this weekend.

Speaker 3 (16:24):
So it was great against us last time.

Speaker 2 (16:26):
Yeah, Okayman America, we'll talk more about him coming up.
The recent success. It's been a blast to watch for
everybody in this room and everybody out at home listening.

Appreciate you being here here tonight.

Speaker 16 (20:48):
Thank you for having me.

Speaker 2 (20:49):
We had to entice with you with some pizza. I
know otherwise you try to avoid us, like to play.
I'm just kidding, all right, So let's dive into to
this season overall. You know, you've been here for two
years now, played in a lot of different roles, right
all the way up to the first line earlier. This year,
you've played with some regular guys in terms of Cole

(21:09):
Gordon and Benji Eckerley, others just kind of been plug
and play. Give me a sense of how how the
locker room is this year as opposed to last year,
and what you're loving about this team.

Speaker 17 (21:20):
Yeah, this year the locker room is great. Obviously, last
year it was tremendous as well. It's kind of weird
when you look at it like that. Both were awesome,
but they were very different. I'd say it. I think
we're we have more of a younger feel this year.
I don't know if it was just having guys like

(21:40):
Tyler Gratt and yeah, no, both are great, different which
keep which keeps things fun.

Speaker 16 (21:48):
But yeah, it's been great this year.

Speaker 6 (21:50):
For you specifically, you went from last year skating in
two games to this year already twenty plus. What it
was something that maybe clicked for you a little bit
and overall, how cool is it for you to play
for your hometown school.

Speaker 17 (22:03):
Yeah, I think last year it was kind of a
good wake up call. Just had to work through some things,
get stronger, get faster, talking to staff, you know, really
hone in on the gym and off ice. Uh, and
then you know, confidence wise or hockey wise. I don't
think anything changed too much really. I think I came

(22:24):
into camp with with more of a better mindset that
you know, I want to make an impact, I want
to play in games this year and uh, luckily enough,
you know, things kind of worked out. Things as you said,
we're clicking and uh, and playing in front of friends
and family.

Speaker 16 (22:41):
Yeah, I mean, nothing beats it.

Speaker 17 (22:42):
It's every every game I put on the jersey and
see them in the crowd, it's it's it's an unbelievable feeling.

Speaker 2 (22:49):
Do you you generally have a lot of family and
friends at most home games?

Speaker 17 (22:53):
Uh, you know, not not too many my family and
maybe you know two or three friends there in there.

Speaker 2 (22:58):
But it's yeah, me too, Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 16 (23:01):
So, yeah, some some loyal friends.

Speaker 2 (23:04):
That's awesome. No, that's that's great and it's important in
a place like this. I want to ask about a
little more about you kind of being a plug and
play guy, right. You know, we've talked a lot about
how you've spent time, and Coach Powers has told us
like he doesn't put much stock in first line versus
fourth line, but generally just on the line chart. You've
been on that third or fourth line a couple series ago.

(23:24):
Because of injuries and because of how you had been performing,
you were elevated to that top line. I just remember
that being like for us looking at it as what
a great opportunity for you, and I think you ended
up scoring that game. It was either Omaha or duluthe
I can't quite maha, it was Omaha. What did that
feeling feel like at that time for you?

Speaker 17 (23:44):
It was fun? Yeah, like playing up and down the lineup.
Like you said, it doesn't really not we have four
lines that can go. It was fun for me. Honestly,
I just like playing with everyone. I feel like I'm
that type of player. I kind of feel like I
gel with a lot of players, So it's fun. And
at that standpoint looking at it, I get to play

(24:05):
with two new players, and then obviously scoring was was great.
But yeah, like no matter what role I'm in or
what line I'm in, I'm just trying to do whatever
I can to help the team. And you know, coach
in the in the staff does a good job of
kind of letting you know what what you need to
do that weekend, and that was just a weekend where
they kind of said, I, I can, you know, play

(24:27):
a little more loose and try to create more and uh,
fortunate enough that second game we we want and we
started started to streak there.

Speaker 3 (24:35):
Yea.

Speaker 6 (24:35):
And and I think that's the story of a lot
of guys have been playing with multiple linemates the entire season,
up and down the chart. What about the group gives it.
I guess the every single person the professionalism to be
able to be all right, this is where I am today,
and we're going to succeed in that.

Speaker 17 (24:51):
Yeah, I think it goes back to when we're talking
about the locker room. I we have such a great
locker room. Everyone likes everyone. We're always hanging out, you know,
whether it's here going out to eat or on the road,
everyone's hanging out together playing cards.

Speaker 3 (25:04):
So it's just the environment in the culture we've built.

Speaker 2 (25:06):
Here when you look at this roster, and I don't
think I've posed this question to anybody yet, but you're
you're kind of in a unique situation as a sophomore
right where you've been here a year. You've kind of
seen how things work. You've seen how good leadership works,
perhaps over your hockey journey, maybe some not so great leadership.
But you also have a front row seat to the
new guys, the freshman coming in. How as kind of

(25:30):
that guy in the middle, how confident are you in
seeing the leadership group and the veterans on the squad
now while also seeing kind of the next bearers of
the torch in who will carry this program forward?

Speaker 16 (25:42):
Very confident.

Speaker 17 (25:43):
I mean, the staff has done a great job to
recruiting great, great people, and I don't think that's an accident.
We we bring in guys that are obviously excellent hockey players,
but also great, great people. So when you have great
people coming in freshman wise and transfers, these transfers to
now this year like Shimmick Lucius juniors, they're gonna be

(26:04):
here for next year too, Like we're we're built for
now in the future with everyone that's coming in.

Speaker 6 (26:10):
Yeah, it's so cool to see you guys had everybody
skating a practice today, which is a great sign of course,
But how much the talent is on the team. How
much more fun does that make practice? But how much
harder does that make practice as well? In terms of
like making every single guy better?

Speaker 17 (26:26):
Yeah, no, it's truly incredible, Like every single player is legit.
And like you just said, it's fun. Like just watching practice,
watching some reps are like wow, like Diddy just you know,
like Potters Potter's a regular of that for me, Like
watching practice is crazy. And then yeah, the compete is up,
like when we play small area games at the end

(26:47):
of practice, you know, the the compete is through the roof.
You know, the coaches try to say, like, let's not
run guys through the wall, but the way our team
is and just how competitive we are, those games get
really tough, like sometimes you you're in an actual game
at the.

Speaker 2 (27:01):
End of those We were talking to Coach Powers in
the first period about the fact that you guys have
won ten out of your last eleven. You picked up
points in each of those eleven games. How good is
it feeling knowing the trajectory you're on but also seeing
the challenges ahead and saying the work is not finished
and we need to kind of keep going full speed ahead.

Speaker 16 (27:23):
Yeah, we like where we're at.

Speaker 17 (27:25):
I mean, it was definitely good to get success after
the start we had, and we never lost confidence either,
Like even with that start, we knew we were, you know,
just on the door when and go through it. But
we've put ourselves in a great spot and with the
games ahead, and we like where we're at and if
we just keep playing, how we know we can. Staff's

(27:48):
talk about a lot our standard. We like where where
we are and we like where we're gonna end up.

Speaker 6 (27:53):
Your hockey journey growing up. But I'll start with the
under seventeen five Nations Tournament playing for Team USA, teammates
with Bennet Chimmick, coach by Mike Corbot, who was an
assistant on that team, of course, assistant with an issue.
Now what was that experience like representing your country and
also the names on that team were pretty unbelieved.

Speaker 16 (28:11):
Yeah, yeah, it was unreal.

Speaker 17 (28:13):
I mean kind of feels like a blur sometimes, like
all those players are amazing players. I mean, I was
just I was lucky enough that that national camp which
you go to to it's kind of a try out
for the team. I just like things where things are
going for me that week and.

Speaker 6 (28:31):
We're a point per game guy in the tournament though,
so you can you can brag a little bit.

Speaker 2 (28:35):
There no need.

Speaker 17 (28:37):
It was all I mean, it was just incredible from
top to bottom. Like that's something I'll remember for for
the rest of my life.

Speaker 2 (28:45):
Und goaltender Hobie Headquist was on that team. If you
get a chance to catch up with yeah a little bit.

Speaker 16 (28:49):
Yeah, that's great, that's awesome.

Speaker 2 (28:52):
Moving forward, is is this a sport that you want
to continue to pursue. I know you still got plenty
of eligibility left, so I'm not kicking out the door.
But is this something that you want to progress to
to maybe go to the next level.

Speaker 17 (29:04):
I mean yeah, as long as I'm I think I'm
having fun and going to the rank every day with
a smileline face, and teams are willing to take me,
I'll keep playing.

Speaker 6 (29:15):
I do quickly want to go. You were a long
time Junior Coyotes player. Of course Coyotes are gone now,
but Arizona State and that prominence that has the Junior
Sun Devils program. How important is our programs like that
for youth hockey, for people like you that are developing
and ultimately want to play at ASU.

Speaker 16 (29:37):
I mean it's critical.

Speaker 17 (29:38):
If if I didn't have that program growing up, I'm
I'm not here right now. I wouldn't And and other
players like me that are now at the Division one
level or pro hockey, we're not developing into the players
we are, you know, especially when when you're in those
youth years, like those years are so important for your future.

Speaker 2 (29:59):
Got one more for you, a where we have to
take a break, and it's about this weekend, big one again.
I feel like we're gonna be saying this every weekend.
But Colorado College, you guys played them two and a
half months ago up in the Springs. We know how
that series went. What's it gonna take? And I know
you guys focus very much one game at a time.
What is it gonna take to get a win on
Friday to then have to worry about Saturday?

Speaker 16 (30:20):
Just just play our game.

Speaker 17 (30:22):
We have, We have the belief that we can win
and we will win. Obviously, last series didn't go how
we want and I think that series in particular stung.
That one was that stung a lot, and I think
guys still have that. Yeah, I think a lot of
guys on the team, if not everyone should be. We're
looking forward to this weekend, so a.

Speaker 2 (30:43):
Little bit of redemption and potentially eleven out of twelve
if you guys can get a win on Friday. Really
appreciate you joining us. Good luck this weekend. We'll talk
to you on Friday, sir, all right, thank you? All right?

That's solid here, and I'm not a solid guy either.

Speaker 3 (34:55):
Hey, New Year salads at a pizza Plazer.

Speaker 2 (34:59):
Okay, So we just had David Haimovijohn. What has he
meant to your team the last two years? Just being
able to be that kind of Swiss Army knife.

Speaker 5 (35:08):
He's he's just a great all around human being first
and foremost. You know that we're just thrilled that he's
in our program. He bleeds more in gold and comes
from a great family and and he's done everything we've
asked this year. You know, he he's a he's a
utility guy and his IQ is incredibly high, which allows
him to play any role.

Speaker 3 (35:30):
And he's been great.

Speaker 2 (35:32):
Yeah, it's been fun to watch him kind of develop
over the last couple of years. I know we don't
have time to at least on this show to hone
in on everyone individually, but I do want to ask
you and spend some time discussing the line that to
us has been so fun to watch since being formed
two weeks ago. Cruz, lu Benet Shimmick and Colin Potter.
Uh Shimmick and Lucius go way back to their childhood days.

(35:55):
What kind of threat do you think that they pose
weekend and week out to opposing defense?

Speaker 5 (36:00):
They're they're nasty, right, They're nasty, and they haven't even
scratched the service of how good they're going to be.
This is this is Cruise's first week of practice. He
didn't practice last week. Nobody knew that he almost wasn't
clear to play. He got cleared Friday mornings, so he
didn't practice again. So that kid played and he was
effective on a huge sheet of ice without another week

(36:23):
of practice and was really effective.

Speaker 3 (36:26):
He made a lot of good plays.

Speaker 5 (36:27):
I thought his best game so far was his first
game against North Dakota.

Speaker 3 (36:32):
But he's a he's a special player.

Speaker 5 (36:34):
Him and Bennett have unbelievable chemistry on and off the ice.
And then when you put him with you know a
kid that that that's a world class player like Patsi.

Speaker 3 (36:42):
It's it's gonna be really dangerous.

Speaker 5 (36:43):
What's exciting about that line is we'll get him back
next year, right, so you know we can really build
chemistry with them to where you know, you know, in
a year they they very well could be the top line.

Speaker 3 (36:56):
In college hockey.

Speaker 2 (36:57):
Yeah. Are you just waiting for kind of the conditioning
to come back for Crews?

Speaker 3 (37:01):
Yeah, and it's almost there. You know, it comes it
comes quick. Games.

Speaker 5 (37:03):
There's nothing better for that then games and themselves. And
he's played in four and he's getting eighteen to twenty minutes, right, so,
and he's dealing with it really well. You know, he
ran out of gas a little bit on Saturday the
big ice and you know the other team was desperate
and closing hard and killing plays, but he was really good.
I think he was down on himself and he had

(37:25):
no reason to be. He's he's been a huge shot
in the arm for.

Speaker 3 (37:28):
Us, and he's only going to get better and better
and better.

Speaker 6 (37:30):
Yeah, the exponential impact of having talent. Of course, having
talent makes the team good. That's awesome, But also the
cliche of iron sharpens iron and practice, it feels like
there's a more of a higher intensity. I guess with
that much talent there with this team in particular, has
that made changed the way you practice at all, with
some of the things that you're allowed to do, maybe

(37:51):
a higher level of ian.

Speaker 5 (37:53):
I think early with all the guys we had out,
we hadn't changed the way we practiced a little bit,
especially in the first you know, and games because we
couldn't lose anybody else. So, I mean, there were a
couple of games where we addressed Tucker you know up front,
you know so, but yeah, So it's nice to have
a full roster on the ice. It, you know, just

(38:14):
it allows the pace to pick up because you get
a little bit more rest in between reps, so you
can demand more pace, you can demand you know, more focus,
you can you can do more competition. There's so many
things you can do with a full roster on the
ice in practice. So today was nice. Tomorrow and Thursday
will continue to be really nice.

Speaker 3 (38:33):
It was.

Speaker 5 (38:34):
It was a really good breath of fresh air to
have the team that that we put together as a
staff finally on the ice together today.

Speaker 2 (38:41):
So that leads me perfectly into our injury update. Do
you have any injuries right now?

Speaker 5 (38:46):
Well, I mean, is there a chance Ara could could
maybe not go maybe, but I think he's gonna be okay.
He looked really good today. He's telling me he wants
to play. So we'll see how it goes throughout the week.
I anticipate Dylan Jackson and should be back in case
something happens this week. So we we you know, knock
on wood. Yeah, I mean, you know, I have some

(39:06):
tough decisions to make on who's in and who's out.
And that's what I tell our players, like, make me
lose sleep over who I put in the lineup, you know,
because they all want to play, and we believe in
all of them, you know, and and they do that.
They've done a great job of that because they're all
great kids. They all do what we ask on and
off the ice, and.

Speaker 3 (39:26):
They make my job really hard. It's it's a good thing.

Speaker 2 (39:29):
Yeah, I mean it will be. I mean, but like,
barring any other injuries, Like, have you have you thought
about who may be out of the lineup? I mean,
I i'd imagine like this is a decision like for
the ages, considering that fourth line of yours is like
has been super productive for most of the year.

Speaker 5 (39:46):
Yeah, they they've done, They've done what we've asked, you know,
And and so it's hard. It's hard to take kids
out that you know can get the job done. But
at the end of the day, you know, as a staff.

Speaker 3 (39:57):
We we we.

Speaker 5 (39:58):
We had in our mind the way we wanted to
build this roster and how we wanted to play with it.
And now we have all the pieces in place to
do that, and we're gonna do it, you know. So
there's some decisions that haven't been made. You know, we're
gonna look at some things this week in practice and
and as always, practice is gonna matter.

Speaker 2 (40:19):
It has to matter speaking of practice and kind of
making some decisions. And I know this is always an
evolving question and answer for for you and me. You
have two great options in debt. You went with Gibe
and the three of the last four. Can you give
us kind of your general updated thoughts on your goaltending
situation right now?

Speaker 5 (40:38):
I mean again, it it it's is what I just said.
I mean that they're they've both done their job, you know,
and have is six and one in his last seven starts.
You know, Gibb's three and zero in his last three.
They're both playing so well, and they both deserve to play,
you know, and and we can win. They've proven we
can win with both. Have sweeps Denver at Denver give you.

(41:00):
We've seen Cloud of sin Cloud. He beats no Darth Dakota,
you know. So we're comfortable with either.

Speaker 3 (41:06):
You know.

Speaker 5 (41:07):
It's been going kind of just with gut and feel
and instinct all year, and that's what I'll continue to do.

Speaker 2 (41:12):
Are you ready to name a starter for Friday yet?

Speaker 3 (41:15):
I have a really good idea who it's going to be,
but you're not gonna tell it. I'm not gonna tell
you perfect I love it.

Speaker 2 (41:21):
Let's dive into the series ahead. Colorado College coming to town. Tigers,
as of trust, you know, have been a bit up
and down since you were swept up in the Springs
in early November, but obviously they remain a good team
and can win on on any given night. Remind us
what to look out for from this Tiger team.

Speaker 5 (41:37):
Yeah, I mean I think that they hit a little
bit of a snag that that I don't think really
anybody that that follows college hockey, and certainly our conference
saw coming, you know, and and but we know how
good they are.

Speaker 3 (41:47):
They're they're built to win. They're built to win playoff hockey.

Speaker 5 (41:51):
They're incredibly well coached from top to bottom on their staff,
they have they have just a great program and really
really good players like we we played them last time, arguably,
you know, one of the top three four players in
our conference, and Noah Laba wasn't even in the lineup.

Speaker 3 (42:06):
So he's in.

Speaker 5 (42:07):
He's in this weekend, and he's obviously starting to play
really really well. So they're deep, they're big, they're structured.
They have an unbelievable goaltender in caden Burco, which we
learned the hard way when we were up there last time.
So you know, they're gonna come in hungry to get
get their season back on track, you know. And they

(42:27):
had a big night on Friday against the luth and
obviously dropped one Saturday, so they're gonna be hungry, right
And now it's a mindset we've never been in before.

Speaker 3 (42:36):
We've always chased.

Speaker 5 (42:37):
We've always been been kind of that underdog that's chasing
and trying to earn respect. Right now, we're in the
last third of the season in first place. We are
being chased, and and so I like it because because
you know, when you're being chased. You can't let your
foot off the gas because if for the gas, you're
gonna get caught. Right, So it's it's pedal to the metal,
you know, and and all the cliches you can think

(42:58):
of for us, but if for us, it's all about
creating more separation.

Speaker 6 (43:01):
With that being said, knowing that Colorado College swept you
guys last time, how much are you selling to your
team that aren't this is our chance to get retribution
for that? Or is it just another series against a
phenomenal team that we got to play our game against.

Speaker 3 (43:14):
Well, it's both, right.

Speaker 5 (43:15):
I mean, there's no weekends off in our league, and
we know that, and it's certainly how we've approached every weekend.
And I think I have a team where I don't
need to, you know, stand in front of them and
try and.

Speaker 3 (43:27):
Motivate them because we got swept.

Speaker 5 (43:29):
They already know that, you know, and they're mature enough
and handle themselves well enough, and we trust that that
they're going to be motivated on their own for that.

Speaker 2 (43:40):
CC Denver, Omaha, and Duluth are the teams you'll see
twice this season. You've seen teams twice in a season.
Before obviously the Alaska schools last year and some before that.
How much does it help, if at all, to prepare
for a team when you played them a few weeks
or in this case, a few months ago.

Speaker 5 (43:57):
Yeah, I mean, it's it's kind of nice, you know,
to be honest, Like, I mean, you prescott opponents so hard.
I mean, and Dana and I do the majority of
the pre scout work for all of our opponents, and
it was a lot lighter this week.

Speaker 3 (44:10):
You know. Obviously we look at.

Speaker 5 (44:12):
Current games or recent games to look at if tendencies
have changed, if they maybe have switched something up. But
at the end of the day, you really know what
you're getting into. You know their personnel, you know how
they want to play and what identity they want to
play to, and you know how to try and overcome
that or prevent them from getting into that.

Speaker 3 (44:30):
But so it's gonna be it's cool.

Speaker 5 (44:32):
It's gonna be a cool thing being in a league
where you get teams multiple times a year, and like
you said, we've done it, but not in a league
setting where where the games really really mean something.

Speaker 2 (44:43):
Yeah, and it's I mean, you have six regular season
series left, four of which you've already played the team,
So I'd imagine that's a positive implications of this series
in particular obviously six points on the line, the ability
to add a little bit more distance between yourself from
the Western Michigan's and North Dakotas and Omaha's of the world,

(45:04):
but also very well, I mean, you know, I haven't
looked at the exact point numbers, but you guys could
be in the middle of the pack by the end
of this weekend if it doesn't go your way. Is
that just kind of a mindset thing of bracing for,
you know, a roller coaster the rest of the way.

Speaker 3 (45:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (45:19):
I mean, we're out in front right now, right, And
to stay out in front, we have to keep our
foot in the pedal, right, And and you can't let up.

Speaker 3 (45:26):
You can't.

Speaker 5 (45:26):
You can't take a breath, you can't have a shift off,
you can't have a game off. Every minute is going
to matter here for the rest of the season. We're
obviously playing nowt to win a league, you know, and
and and and obviously jockey for the best position that
we can in the pair wise as we move forward.
But really we haven't even talked about the pair wise
We've looked at our conference as our our our you know,

(45:49):
pathway to doing everything we want to do as a team,
you know, hosting a playoff series, maybe winning a regular
season championship now you know, going to Minnesota for the
Frozen face off in the final four of the NCHC
and then obviously using all that as a catalyst to
get to the NCAA Tournament in advance in the nc
DOUABLEA Tournament.

Speaker 3 (46:09):
I think we have a team that just getting there
isn't a high enough goal.

Speaker 5 (46:14):
It's not and we we we've kind of had a
mindset early as a program where we wanted to prove
we could compete with everybody. We've already done that, you know.
Now now we have a group of kids that that
they know, they know if they show up and they
play to our standard and our identity into their full potential,

(46:35):
that we can beat anybody we play.

Speaker 2 (46:37):
I had another one that I don't think. I don't
think it'd be smart to leave it anywhere, but that

About that, Yeah, maybe the man of the Man of
the Week now I'm expanding, Yeah, you're ut. All right, Well,
first things first, happy to report I am fully defrosted.

Speaker 6 (50:41):
I think I'm still frozen in that seat in the
car with the cold air blowing.

Speaker 2 (50:46):
I'm telling you, we had like a thirty second walk
to the car. It was too much. Yeah, so anyway, easier.
It really clicked on how easy it is to recruit here,
at least at least we don't have to go back
to Minnesota for less than a month. Anyway, All right,
let's uh, let's get into business here. I think we
should start with that line we talked to Coach Powers
about the Shimmik Lucas Potter line. They've been wonderful and

(51:11):
a blast to watch, and I really thought what he
said was fascinating that, like, and he's right, they haven't
even scratched the surface, Yeah, which is wild.

Speaker 6 (51:18):
And he blew my mind for about five minutes thinking
that they're back next year too. Yeah, But like I think, what,
really you can tell the difference in skill on a
line by how mesmerizing the passing is. Yeahs, especially this
day and age, with with all the people have scrolling
on TikTok and all that stuff. You can just watch
the puck go around and and and we know how

(51:40):
you feel about that, how happy you are. But but again,
like just how much skill they have, and it feels
like they've been playing in the NHL for ten years together.
But again, how they work the strength and patients of cruise,
adding the skill of Potter and his house quick he is,
and then the gratty mentality and really the ability to
both of those things from Bennett Shimmick makes that line perfect.

Speaker 3 (52:03):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (52:03):
I mean they just have so much chemistry playing you know,
Lucius and him from their childhood, like having that knowledge
of one another and where they're gonna be is incredible.
Another guy who continued to like it rack up the
points this weekend was Ryan Kerwin. I think twelve twelve
points in his last eight games if I counted correctly.
He's been on an absolute tear. And what's so cool

(52:24):
about him is he finally gets to like have his
spot on the line chart after being one of those
plug and play guys with all the injuries in the
early portion of the season. But yet you know, he's
also a utility guy who will play anywhere and find.

Speaker 6 (52:39):
Success and just a guy that just gets it done. Like, yes,
he's a tremendous player at Coach Powers mentioned like this
guy could be our top score when he plays for
us this year. Like he just gets it done and
always has a smile on his face which helps. But
all again, he's one of those guys that comes in
from a program from a big conference that has played

(52:59):
in intent environments on the road, that has helped Arizona
State when they have gone to Denver swept them. And
this past weekend at Saint Cloud and had success away
from home.

Speaker 2 (53:09):
North Dakota they were in town two weeks ago. Hard
for me to remember back that far but I was
told they were here. I never forget them. I was
reminded by the you know, half the barn filled with
the green jerseys. But they're gone. Now that's all that matters,
and we go up there next year where I'm sure
we'll be quite welcomed. You in particular, four out of

(53:29):
six points. Sure, you know Saturday was was a heartbreak
or a stinger or whatever you want to call it.
But I think all things considered, I know you and
I felt pretty good at the end of that series,
knowing what they accomplish.

Speaker 6 (53:44):
Again, like, yes, the way it happened on Saturday, it
stings a lot. But again, when you can separate yourself
from that and say, all right, we took four of
six from another top ten caliber program, or you can
go further back in the one point you did get
on the road to Colorado College, That's the difference in
first place in second place in the NCCH right now

(54:04):
is being able to get a point there and get
a point here. So stacking those and to push to
overtime and getting points from every single game on this stretch,
it adds up in the long run, and again could
be the difference from either a conference Championship in the
second place, or hosting the first round three game series
as the four seed, or going two number four.

Speaker 2 (54:25):
As the five. Yeah, and we'll talk about all those scenarios,
you know, and they have.

Speaker 3 (54:29):
Another hour long show for that.

Speaker 2 (54:31):
Yeah, we seriously, we have to have an entire special show.
And then you go to Saint Cloud six points. So
you can't really complain too much about the results, obviously,
especially the comeback win on Friday. They were down, but
they were never out. And I feel like I've said
it a dozen times since since that game, but they
prove they can capitalize when they get an advantage, and
you know, the major call was a big part of

(54:53):
that on Saturday, but they proved that they can win
in different ways.

Speaker 6 (54:56):
And again, yes, you can talk about the major call
and that shifting the game, but they had to still
capitalize on the major call. And that's something earlier in
the season, when the wins weren't coming and they were
not capitalizing on the opportunities that their opponent gave them. Yeah,
Saint Cloud was struggling and they're in a tough stretch
without their goaltender. But again, the pairwise system just sees

(55:18):
a number they don't see injuries or anything, and the
number helped you go up to what eleven or twelve
right now in the pairwise, which again you're starting to
get those seatings where you can wear the home jersey
in the NCAA tournament. Yeah, which is wild to think about.

Speaker 2 (55:33):
All Right, we only have about a minute or so
left here, so let's chat real quick about this weekend specifically,
Colorado College is in town. As you earned one point
back in the series in November. It was that crushing
overtime loss, but I think these are two different teams
who have been through quite a bit since here.

Speaker 6 (55:52):
Yeah, and again, as coach said, Noah Lava wasn't on
the ice for Colorado College. But what they do with
their coaching staff when they what they've built is they're
a very structured team, tough to play through. Not necessarily
a high scoring team, especially when when you can rely
upon the goaltender that is Caiden Ambarico. And so it's
gonna be another gritty, tough test. Good to be at

(56:13):
home though.

Speaker 2 (56:14):
Yeah, we're excited for that series. If you're not heading
to the arena, or even if you aren't want to listen,
you can join Alex and me for pregame coverage at
six thirty Friday and four thirty Saturday, or you can
flip it over to NCCHC dot tv if you'd like
to watch and listen. Thanks tonight to head hockey coach
Greg Powers and David Haimovich for joining us and everybody
who helped us behind the scenes. We'll see you Friday

(56:36):
six thirty as U and CC. Thanks for tuning in, everybody,
