(00:25):
in Arizona State hasn't missed a beat. The number twelve team in the land
is still sitting pretty in the pairwise. They haven't lost since November,
and they have some hardware from anin season tournament for the first time since
twoenty eighteen, if you can believeit. Now another long homestand is on
the horizon as Sun Devil Hockey aimsto continue its winning ways and climb the

(00:47):
rankings in the final two months ofthe regular season. Hi everybody, Happy
New Year to all of you listeningtonight, Welcome into season two, episode
six of Hell Frozen Over Live tonightfrom Cold Beers and Cheeseburgers in Arcade Yeah
for the next hour here on FoxSports nine ten and streaming on the iHeartRadio
app. I'm Tyler Paley. Theradio play by play broadcaster of Sun Devil

(01:07):
Hockey, happy to have you alongas we discussed the team's latest news and
notes and get you ready for anotherweek of college hockey. Joining me tonight
in every show this year are ArizonaState head coach Greg Powers and my broadcast
partner Alex Coyle. Good to seeyou both. Happy New Year. You
made it back safely from Lake Placid. Yeah we did. You guys did
too atky after a fifteen hour travelday. But uh hey, you know

(01:30):
what, that's just the name ofthe game. I had fun, Tyler.
I enjoyed it was. It wasa peaceful home for me. Yeah,
you probably just passed out. Howare your New Year's celebrations? Mine
was very quiet? Yeah? Yeah. I went to bed very early,
you and me both, Alex.I didn't make it to five o'clock.
And usually I have to set myalarm to get up early in the morning.
Today last time it was went tobed early. The sun was still

(01:52):
up for me. Yeah, that'sjust that's how the weekend was going to
go. We could have predicted that, all right. So, uh,
like I said, we haven't beenhere in just of a month, so
a lot to recap. I don'tthink that there is a point in spending
a whole lot of time on theseries that took place, you know,
three four weeks ago, But let'sat least walk through them, if you
don't mind. Back in our lastepisode, if you can recall, you

(02:14):
were preparing for the Dartmouth Big Green. That series ended up going down as
two ties at home, of course, better than losses. But but do
you feel like any part of thatwas a missed opportunity. I don't know,
you know, I mean, they'regood. They've been a really tough
out for everybody they've played. Ithink they have more ties than anybody in
the country. They do, sothey're stout. They're there. They have

(02:34):
very good goaltending, they're very toughto beat, and they'd proven that against
you know, a number of competition, not just us. So you know,
we we we managed the puck poorlyin game one, came back from
two holes down to to to earnthe tie and the shootout win, and
then in game two we completely dominatedhim. I thought was one of our
better efforts of the year in everyfacet of the game. We just couldn't

(02:55):
solve their six to eight goalie. He was a complete brick wall every way.
So he was that good and andthat's that's hockey. You know that
that's a tie. The a oneto one tie and then the one one
tie Miami. We're both games thatwe were clearly the better team and played
really well. We just couldn't findthe back of the net. You mentioned
coming from behind on a two goaldeficit. That's happened a number of times

(03:16):
this year, including the last threegames you guys have played. Actually,
what what about the group leads youguys to to feel confident in those moments?
And and do you get a senseon the bench when the game is
about to turn. Yeah, Imean think it's just a resilient Like I
said all year, they're they're aresilient group of kids, great leadership,
really good captains. We're never outof any game. We've proven that.

(03:37):
We've we've been able to win gamesso many different varieties in different ways that
we we just know we're never outof it, you know. So,
I mean it's it's we're shot awayfrom from you know, making making a
game out of any situation. Andthat's what we did. The last three
games in a row. We've beendown to nothing, and we've we haven't
lost any of them. I assumethat there's gotta be some sort of conversation

(04:00):
of like, hey, it's greatthat we can do this, but I
assume you don't want to be doingthat. Every game is there is there
always love to go five nothing, that's that's that's you know, that's just
teams are gonna be ready for us, you know, like you look,
we've been ranked really the entire season. We're gonna get everybody's very best effort,
and we have for the most part. So do we want our guys

(04:21):
to come out and get better starts. Yes, We've also taken leads three
nothing leads against Denver to sweep themand and lost. Right, So we've
We've been in so many different situationsthat you know, you can't just template
it. It's just not It's justthere's so much parody in college hockey.
Everybody's good. Like I always say, you have to you just have to

(04:42):
learn how to and and find waysto win games any way you can.
And and this team has done thatso much parody. But you're gonna you're
gonna laugh at this next one.The next series that we have to talk
about is the Robert Morris Colonials. We hit the road to Pittsburgh a couple
of weeks ago. You and yourteam got off to a slow start on
Saturday, won the hockey game fourto one, then a few penalties early

(05:05):
on Sunday, of course, putsyou down to nothing. But your Sun
Devil's rallied again big time, outscoringthe Colonials eight to one down the stretch
for a eight to three victory.Tyler Gratton had his first hat trick as
a Sun Devil in that game.Look, we know those were both must
wins, right, and you tookcare of business. But I wonder what

(05:25):
a win in particular like the oneon Sunday tells you about your team's offense,
especially missing the Jackson brothers. Yeah, I mean, we're we're you
know, we are a skilled group. You know, we have we have
a lot of different guys that canscore. We have a balanced scoring attack.
It could come from any line, which it did this past weekend,
and that's a that's a huge benefitwhen you don't have the Jackson's. You

(05:46):
know, Silly was out and probablyfifty percent when he was in this past
weekend, so you really without youryour top line, you know, and
and but our guys are finding ways, you know, Robert Morris. We
we got going there and playing downhillfor that first time really all year where
it just felt like, you know, we we could have put up ten
or twelve. Yeah, you know, and uh, the guys are really

(06:09):
buzzing. So it was good tosee. It was in. Any road
win in college hockey is good.Any road win is tough. It's really
hard to win on the road.I think we're four to one and three
on the road this year, havea result from every game, and the
one the one losses is a youknow, probably the one that that will
will bite bite us the most aswe as we progress here, the four

(06:30):
to one lead at Miami and thenlosing an overtime. So we've been good
away from allent. We've been verygood at moment, but we've been we
have been good away from home.Yeah, it's good to see you seem
to really challenge your team before theSunday game at Robert Morris. Of course
it was the game before breaks. You didn't want any role from that.
But the great coaches, regardless ofsport, always seemed to know when to

(06:54):
either push the button or kind oflay off from the team. What signs
are you looking for for when youwant to push those buttons? Well,
I think it's always, you know, I found it's always easier to kind
of go after your guys a littlebit when you're winning, you know.
And and it's it's it's a it'san easier message to get across, you
know, having success. But youknow, you know, you don't want
them getting too comfortable, you know. And and I didn't like how we

(07:17):
played Friday at Robert Morris at all, or the first game at Robert Morris.
And you know, we we hada good result with a four to
one win. And I thought thatif if we didn't really pay attention to
the details and where we weren't good, it could have really cost us in
game two. And and so yeah, I was I was hard on them.
I was probably the toughest I've beenon them all year. But they

(07:39):
responded to this team. This teamdoes and they've continued to That's great.
All right, let's talk about thispast weekend. In the inaugural at Rondack
Winter Invitational that was up in LakePlacid, New York. You guys got
to play on the same ice whereTeam USA defeated the Soviet Union in the
nineteen eighty Olympics, the Miracle onIce. Of course, before we talk

(07:59):
about the results, which are fantastic, how special was it for you and
the guys to get to play upthere at Herb Brooks Arena. It was
incredible. I mean, obviously beingan American and you know, you know,
idolizing that eighty Olympic team and watchingthe Miracle and you know the movie
and just all the history that goeswith that building. It was a really
cool experience. I had never beenreally cool town, great little strip of

(08:22):
play. It's just really cool andI'm glad our guys got to go experience
it, and then to win atrophy on that ice as it makes it
even even cooler. You were incollege during that nineteen eighty or not right,
it's about right, right? Ohyeah, do you remember, Tyler?
Yeah? Yeah, no, notquite, But watched the movie the

(08:43):
first game, the first ten minuteswere not the first ten minutes that would
have been ideal, but you've founda way to still be in that game,
and you find a way to getJackson Piedermayer to score the two to
one goal wasn't the most pretty goal, but it kind of gave you,
guys some momentum. What was whatabout that game and about the team really

(09:03):
resonated against a team that was toughto play. It was a tail of
two halves, you know, thatwas what that game was. We were
we were as bad as we couldbe in the first half of that game.
We couldn't break pucks out. Pucktouches were awful from everybody in the
back end, just turning pucks overfor really no reason. But but it
was just a hot potato and itgot contagious. And once the guys reset,

(09:26):
you know, we got down topop that goal by needs, you
know, and and started to executehow we needed to play, which is
getting pucks in behind their D andhaving a hard f one and getting disruptions
and being above pucks. And thenwhen you establish a four check against a
team like that, we thought thattheir D would probably be there. They're
there, they're you know, positionthat we could attack and exploit a little

(09:48):
bit. And we were right. And once we started establishing our four check
against them, they had no choicebut to just chip it out, right.
So when you're chipping it out, that's when you can establish your transition
game and get moving north quickly. And then we started to hem him in
and really wear him down. Andthat's what we did the last half of
the game, and we felt likeobviously we wind up winning five to two.

(10:09):
I mean, you know, wewere really good in the back half
of that game. It was aclinic from a execution standpoint and what we
wanted to do and and it endedup being enough. Thank god. Game
two was closed as well, thistime for a full sixty five minutes.
I guess as you down to nothinguntil roughly the midway point of that game
as well, and Jacksonniedermeyer able tosneak a shot past Cornell goaltender Ian Shane

(10:33):
and the power play got the jobdone first minut of the third period.
That was cop scoring. In Gametwo, we'd had to overtime for the
seven hundredth time this season. Nobodyscored there, so this was the first
shootout that would actually mean something, right. It determined the tournament champion.
Kyle Smollen the only one to scorein the shootout. TJ made all three
saves and that's a tournament win forthe first time in nearly six years.

(10:56):
How pumped were you to get thatdub? It was awesome. I mean,
you know, it's you know,we're playing the shootouts now as an
independent. They're gonna matter next yearwhen you're in a league. Shootouts matter
I mentally, So you want toget that extra point win and you shootout.
And we're right now knock on woodundefeated and shootouts this year, which
is a huge testament to not onlyTJ, but but our guys were finding

(11:16):
ways to pop goals when it mattersmost. But yeah, it was fun.
We we knew when that. Youknow, when games for us go
to overtime, there's there's a bittersweetnessfeel to it because we know how important
it is for us to win gamesin regulation as an independent, but with
that one being down two to ateam is stout and as good defensively and

(11:37):
as heavy as Cornell is, theydon't give up many two goal leads,
like very very few times you eversee a Cornell team get up too and
and and let a team back init. So I was really proud of
our guys for getting it overtime. It was the first time all year when
we got to overtime. I waslike, okay, like that's a big
accomplishment. Down down two. Tocome back against that good of a team

(11:58):
and get there was a big deal. And then obviously the overtime was all
over the place and we got itdone in the shootout and brought a trophy
home. Yeah, you kind ofjumped on my next question, which is
quite all right, but just topress you a little further, not to
be a pessimist, but like thefact remains that you really only have what
like five or six games to playwith where you can't where you don't have

(12:20):
to win, right Like down thefinal eighteen, we were saying, like
you probably had to get another thirteenwins. You had like six games where
you could lose or tie. Ofcourse it depends on the opponent. Does
any part of that one do youwant it back? Or do you look
forward and say, hey, westill got sixteen to play. No.
I think if you would have toldme going into adiron deck we were going
to come back with the trophy, beat Clarks in a regulation and get a

(12:43):
tie against a team like Cornell,I would have taken it. Yeah.
I mean, that's a good roadtrip for anybody, anybody, and college
hockey would take that Obviously the gamecould have gone either way. It was
a really good game. I thoughtit was just a very well tight checked
game. Both ways. Both teamshad some good opportunities. Are really good.
They're young, but they are veryvery good. So it's gonna be

(13:03):
a war when they come in herein two weeks. It's gonna be an
absolute war. We're gonna look forwardto that one. Yeah, that's gonna
be a very entertaining series. Itdawned on me, and speaking of benji
acurarly earlier today, how important itis to just step back and Tyler and
I do a lot of talking aboutoh, pairwise, this, pairwise that
where you know, how much roomfor air do you have? But you're
twenty two games into the season andyou've lost three times. Just how much

(13:26):
fun has this season been? That'sthe biggest thing that people have to look
at, like, this is ateam that's played twenty two games in lost
three and three crazy the three youknow, ones in overtime where we had
a three goal lead in the third, the other we had a three goal
lead against Denver, and the otherone was a one goal loss against a
really good Providence team. So itis just a team that competes. They
compete, They're fun to watch. It's fun for me to be a part

(13:50):
of with these kids. It's it'sfun going to the rink every day.
It's a really really you know hereeverybody you know, teams and kids talk,
Oh, it's close, grow we'rethis is a really close group.
It really is. It's it's genuinein every way, and they want to
win for each other. They don'tcare who gets the credit, and you
could feel that this weekend they justwanted to bring on trophy home, you

(14:13):
know, and they were thrilled thatwe were able to do it. I
got one more for you before wehad to break. But no need to
worry. Coach Powers is sticking aroundfor the second period. It's not lost
on any of us how big TJ. Sampton Felter has been for this team
through those twenty two games. Obviouslyhasn't been perfect, but he's a big
reason that your team has fourteen winsright now. I know you've set the

(14:35):
bar high for him this year. Can you share your thoughts on TJ's performance
in that tournament, over the lastfew series and really through twenty two games
so far. I thought this weekend. You could you could make the argument
that he was the best he's been. And the reason I say that is
because he didn't see a lot ofrubber. He saw twenty two shots in
regulation both games. But Clarkson specificallyman that they have some great a's,

(14:58):
so he wasn't you know, theyweren't hem and a sin. They weren't
generating a lot of ozone time forthem in die zone time for us.
But they had some odd man rushes. They had a big breakaway that they
could have gone up three to nothingon in the second he made some huge
grade a's, So you know, when you're not getting all that rubber,
but you're staying mentally engaged to makethose huge saves when called upon. He's

(15:20):
taken a huge step from a churitystandpoint, from every every way you know,
he's he's been great. He's beena huge, huge reason why we're
having success. Yeah, he's funto watch too. Twenty two games down,
sixteen to go, twelve of whichwill be in front of the home
crowd at Muled Arena. Sun Devil'sundefeated in their last eight games, not
a ton of room for error likewe mentioned, and having some homeice advantage

(15:41):
will be huge for the next monthand a half. When we returned to

(19:18):
We're live every other Tuesday this seasonfrom Cold Beers and Cheeseburgers Now in
the Arcadia location right near fortieth Streetand Indian School. If you're not here
tonight, we do have a specialedition next week. We hope you'll consider
joining us Tuesday, January ninth. That's at six pm. You can come,
grab some delicious food and talk somecollege hockey with US coach. Greg
Power's back with US now coach beforewe get back to hockey now that we

(19:41):
know the College Football National Championship nextMonday will be Michigan and Washington. So
you got what a games, allthose games last night, it's gonna belong.
Yeah, you know, there's somethingabout this Washington team. There's something
about them. You know, Ican see them winning next week. Pennix
is the real deal, and thatthat receiver real they have is unbelievable.

(20:04):
Their defense is underrated. They almostblew it last night. Yeah, you
know, like that that kid thatgot hurt, that kid that got hurt,
like it he had to feel sobad. Yeah, you would hope.
Yeah, yeah, that's a coach, you would hope. Just speaking
of the the Washington area, Iguess Seattle joy to coord yesterday was the

(20:26):
first shutout in Winter Classic history.Of course, he's had a tremendous run
up in Seattle. How much ofthat game did you get to watch?
And what did you think of everythingthat he's been able to do. We
gotta watch the whole thing. Itwas really cool, you know, just
a great day for him and hisfamily and then obviously son of a hockey
because of the publicity that that ourprogram was able to get through his success,

(20:48):
which is tremendous. So we're proudof Joey. We're happy for him.
He's really established himself as a legitimateNHL goalie, and I think that
he's close to to be in ayou know, full time starter in that
league. And he's just got tokeep going, you know, and not
be content. And knowing Joey,he won't be He'll he'll he'll keep keep
grinding. I know you saw hispostgame interview with BIZ, but I have

(21:08):
to ask you, have you everexaggerated in your life? Never? Never,
ever, Joey doesn't like me tellingthe story about him getting lit up
for nine goals, so he wantedhe wanted to give it back to me
a little bit. But it's agreat story. It's a great story,
right, it's I think it's indicativeof of just you know, fighting through
adversity, you know, and it'sa great life lesson that if you don't

(21:30):
get off to the start doing somethingthat that you always dreamed of, it
it still can work out. AndJoey got lit up in his first start,
like that's looking. We were verygood, but we lost nine to
two, you know, in hisfirst start. And yesterday he's the first
first player ever to get a shutoutin the Winter Classic and the MVP of
the Winter Classic and he's six ohand two in his last eight starts.

(21:52):
And then the NHL and you know, it all started for him a Notre
dame. Yeah, that's right. You must have been smiling that that whole
afternoon. That was pretty dark.Cool. All right, let's get back
to this team now. We'll stayon the topic of goaltenders if you don't
mind. We talked earlier about TJ. Sempenfelter being one of, if not
the most critical part of your team'ssuccess so far this season. I guess

(22:18):
I'm wondering, with sixteen games togo, do you foresee Gibson Homer getting
to double digit starts. I thinkyou said that at one point. He
has four. Right now, TJseems fresh. I'm just wondering, can
you fit him in for another six? You know, I don't know it.
It's all gonna come down to justsituational awareness, you know, and
having a pulse on TJ's you know, ability to stay fresh. Right now

(22:41):
he is. It wasn't like hesaw a huge workload last weekend. He
had again twenty two shots in bothgames. So he's got pop. He's
he's rested. We're able to getGibby four starts. If I could go
back the first semester, I thinkthat I would have given Gibby the second
game with Robert Morris. If Icould go back, I would I would
have given him game to get intofive. But it's a beauty of hindsight

(23:03):
and looking forward, he'll still getsome starts. Will he get to ten?
I have no idea. You know, you just never know. You
got to play it by year.TJ right now is on a roll and
we're gonna ride them for the foreseeablefuture. So we can expect to see
TJ at least on Friday. Yeah, of course, Yeah, Okay.
I don't want to keep hammering onthis storyline, but if you'll indulge me

(23:25):
one more time. Here for thosewho may not have heard us share the
news this weekend on our broadcast, you told us that the sad news is
Dylan Jackson will undergo season ending surgery. I don't know if he's already gotten
it. He's getting tomorrow. He'sgotta hit tomorrow. Okay, So he's
out for the year and Ty Jackson'srecovery will take at least until the August
Stanus series later this month. Obviouslya huge loss in Dylan. We of

(23:45):
course wish him the best as herecovers this offseason. I just want to
know how are both of their spiritsright now? I think that their spirits
are high because we're winning, rightand they feel bad that they're not there
to be a part of it,and they understand how big of a part
of their team they are, youknow, I mean, they they were
really starting to pop, which really, you know, it stinks, but

(24:07):
we're built to sustain injury this year. Last year we just weren't, you
know, we had too many ofthem. So since Dylan and t I
have been out, ironically, westill haven't lost undefeated, which is really
a testament to our players for findingways to step up and their absence and
it speaks to our depth. Soyou know, look, it's it's the

(24:30):
next man up mentality. We're gonnamiss Dylan. He's a peer goal scorer,
He's dynamic, he scores the biggoals and the big moments. That's
just how he operates. So wemiss him. Ties a great center and
makes plays and makes our power playbetter. So we'll be excited to get
him back and we're hoping to gethim back here in a couple of weeks.
Of course he will be back good. Yeah. Of course, when

(24:52):
guys like that go down, youhave to have somebody or a group of
guys truly step up. And Ithink two of the guys that have popped
for me focusing on them a littlebit more. Kyle Smollen of course,
came up huge this weekend, andreally the same Jacksonniedermeier. Seems like both
of them are skating with more confidence, but the grit of small and especially
is coming through. He's going tobe such a good He already is a

(25:14):
good player for us, but he'sgoing to be a great player for us
for a long time. He's justhe does everything the right way. He
lives the right way, he treatspeople the right way. He's a great
student. He was raised the rightway by a great family. And those
are the kind of kids you wantin your program. You know that because
it translates, and with him,it's translated from day one and it will
continue to He's finding some confidence andlikes playing with O and Benji on his

(25:40):
wings, and they've really found agood chemistry with each other. And he's
just going to get better and betteras his career progresses. Here another guy
who's I don't know if you couldsay he's gotten hot, but he certainly
improved as the season has gone onis Charlie Shane. Yep. We actually
ran into him in the elevator inthe hotel this weekend and you could just
tell how happy he was. RightLike, sometimes all it takes is one

(26:00):
spark. He scored this weekend. He's been doing better. What's your assessment
on him? And Yeah, withCharlie, it's just all confidence, right,
and when he's confident, it's usuallymeans. We always tell him like,
Charlie, like you're this fun loving, great kid, like just smile
Talckey, have fun. When he'sgot a smile on his face, he's
really good. And so that's beenthe focus. Just go out have fun.

(26:23):
We don't expect Charlie Shane at hisstature to go and you know,
have big, open, nice hits. But he's he's got to be heavy
on his stick. He has toengage physically, take hard ice away,
limit transition, so his playoff thepuck has has room for improvement. That's
why you probably haven't seen him asconsistently as is. You know, you'd

(26:44):
like to with a kid is skilledin as fast as he is. But
he's he's starting to get it,he really is. And he played really
well against two really hard, heavy, big teams this past weekend and was
a big reason why we got atrophy. Yeah, it was great to
see. All right, let's talkabout this weekend as we wrap up our
time with you. Tonight, it'stime for the Desert Hockey Classic at mulit

(27:06):
Arena, a tournament which Arizona Statehas never won before Game one against the
Harvard Crimson. So it'll be Harvardagainst Harvard of the Southwest, which will
be really cool. That's a teamthat has struggled out of the gates.
Harvard just one win up to thispoint, tied for fifty second in the
pair wise all time though ASU isone four and one against the Crimson.

(27:27):
What should we know about this opponent, Well, Harvard's historically a very very
good, good hockey program, andthey're not a one win team. They're
very talented, very skilled. They'regonna want to get up and go.
They're completely opposite of what we sawlast week in Cornell and Clarkson. But
they're highly skilled. They're just veryyoung, very young. Teddy's told me

(27:48):
that this is, you know,in their eyes, going to be a
rebuilding year. But our guys can'tlook at their record. They have to
understand that Harvard is good enough tobeat anybody, and they are and they're
going to be excited to be here. So, like you said, we've
we've never won the Desert Classic, and one of our our goals all season
was to go in two trophies midseason. We did it. List past weekend

(28:10):
and now we're back at Mullet andI know the guys are excited to try
and win another trophy. Yeah, yeah, Harvard it seemed that, of
course defeated Cornell earlier in the season. But uh, in terms of preparation
for for series like these or Iguess tournaments like this, Uh, you
know who you're playing the one thefirst game the Friday night, what's the

(28:30):
preparation like on the back end gettingready for that second game? Yeah,
I mean it's it's got to bejust really focusing on us, right,
not necessarily the next opponent. We'llpre scout both opponents based on you know,
obviously this weekend will pre scout Omahaand Lowell, so we'll be ready
for either one. But but really, when you have such short turnaround time

(28:51):
and you play a new team thefollowing day, you have to focus on
what you can do better and whereyou can be better. That's why we've
been so focused all season on whatour identity is, how we need to
establish an identity as a team. Our guys have done a good job of
that. So as long as weplay to our identity, no matter who
you play, you're gonna make sometweaks and adjustments, but really the quick
turnaround you're looking at. You knowwhat they do on special teams and how

(29:15):
you can you know, do youknow, exploit them on on the power
play and things you got to maybeyou have to adjust in the kill to
stop their power play. Other thanthat, you focus on you and and
that's what we did last weekend, last one for you. Did you invite
Commissioner Wems from the NC to thistournament? Since there'll be Omaha and Asu,
it will Will she be there?I don't know if she's coming.

(29:37):
I didn't know because she didn't shedidn't come for the Denver Series. I
figured this was the only other realopportunity. I don't know if she's coming.
And that's a good question. Idid hear from a page that a
couple athletic directors and chancellors will actuallybe at this tournament, So some big
important people will be there. Maybethey just want to rather be in Lowell,
Massachusetts. Agree, Oh, don'tfollow me thing. Oh my goodness,

(30:03):
all right? Coach Greg Powers withhis thoughts on this Tuesday night as
we get sent for the Desert HockeyClassic. His sun Devil's back at home
this Friday and Saturday for the firsttime in the new year. Puck drops
seven pm on Friday against Harvard andagain at seven on Saturday against UMass Lowell

the Sun Devils were in play simplemode. A flurry of injuries up
and down the roster required Arizona Stateto stick to the fundamentals. They simply

(34:30):
couldn't afford to be too fancy,And what a shame that is for a
guy like then junior defenseman Tim Lovell. He thrives with the razzle dazzle on
the ice, and lucky for us, we've seen a lot more of that
this year. Timmy joins us nowlive on health Frozen over. Hey.
Congratulations on being the first ever returningguests to our hot seat. Or perhaps
sorry is the right way to phrasethat. I don't know whatever, It's

(34:52):
a blessing and a curse to sithere tonight, I suppose. No,
that's great, everything's great, Sothank you, thank you for having the
guys. You're here, all right, So let's talk first about the vibe
after that big weekend in Lake Placid. We're just talking before we went on
such a cool place, such acool atmosphere and ability to play there.

(35:13):
Had you ever played there before?I've actually never been there, which is
kind of weird. Yeah, becauseyou grew up in Massachusetts. Yeah,
exactly so, and they have alot of hockey like tournaments and stuff up
there, So it was kind ofinteresting for me and like a lot of
my family to go up there andkind of experience the whole thing. What'd
you think? It was awesome?I kind of liked it a lot,
like like again, like not beingthere and experienced something new, like it
was great. So cool? Yeah, so cool. How cool was when

(35:38):
you guys first walked in there?I think you guys had a practice on
Thursday, right, Yeah, whenyou first walked in there, I was
watching one of the videos that thepage posted on Twitter and just seeing the
reaction that kind of soak it allin, vibe the names and the rafters.
Obviously, you know there have beenrenovations and such. But did you
sit back for a moment and kindof soak in, like I'm playing at

(36:00):
the sight of one of, ifnot the most famous moments in this sport.
Yeah, absolutely, I was.I was pretty eager to get on
the ice, like just because oflike the whole historic piece there. Yeah,
I mean, I know, thethere was other teams that skated on.
I think like three of the teamsall skated on and we're the last
team to practice on the day.So the ice wasn't great but no,

(36:22):
but no, actually it was.It was awesome. I like kind of
took every moment into basically be likethis is where like this all went down.
I actually couldn't believe it. Butno, it was really cool and
a really cool experience that happened forme. So it was great. It's
gonna be even cooler that. Youknow, you're maybe playing your best hockey
of the season individually and as ateam. Heading in there. You're not

(36:42):
on what a four game point streakeight assists over that time and nine assists,
so you're up to what twenty sixtwenty seven a million points already this
season. You're playing really well. What's working for you? Honestly, I
think it's just that everybody's on thesame page and our ultimate goals to get
into the tournament tournament this year, and it's it's great for everybody to basically

(37:05):
have that same goal. I knowlast year there was there was kids who
are just you know, it justwasn't the same sort of vibe in the
locker room. No one was reallyNo one's really I don't know, like
brought together as one. I thinkeverybody's really close now and everybody's looking to
get this goal done. So itjust seems like everybody's like friends. Yeah,
Like obviously you have closer relationships withsome than others, but it just

(37:27):
seems like every guy's got every otherguy's back. Yeah. I feel like
in from the past too, likethere were there were friends and everything,
but it just wasn't the same.It wasn't the same feeling, you know.
I feel like more comfortable this yearheading into the heading in toward the
end of the end of the year. So yeah, that's that's awesome.
It's great to hear it. It'sthe same thing we've heard from every guest
so far. So that's certainly tracks. You had some family and friends in

(37:52):
like Placid. I saw you meetingwith them like after the games, and
and they some of them I thinkhad signs for you. Yeah, tell
us a little bit about who theywere. They made a trip from from
Massachusetts, right, Yeah, soI had a lot of my my mom's
side of the family. They're fromDarien, Connecticut. They actually came up
from there and spent the weekend there. They have three kids in college,

(38:14):
so it's a good experience for themto come up and see me play.
They always kind of make a tripout once a year into last year they
can in Arizona, but they cameout along with my grandparents from Kansas,
Massachusetts. They came out as well, traveled with my mom up, so
it was it was good for themto come up to because that's kind of
a big trip for you know, like older people for sure, right,

(38:35):
Yeah, so yeah, I kindof kind of a long way, but
they came out as well, andthen my uncle my dad's side of the
family, my dad's brother and hiskids, three boys, actually came up.
So yeah, it was it wasgreat for everybody to kind of see
me play and experience like Lake Placidin general, it was. It was
an awesome place. It was alittle cold for my partake, right,

(38:57):
but I'm a little fortunate to actuallybe at Arizona State, so no,
yeah, it's awesome. So itwas great. Must have been really special
for you to play in front ofthem. I mean, I know you've
grown up playing hockey, you've gottento play in front of them, but
being so far away from home. It's got to mean something. And then
just add the cherry on top ofplaying in that. Yeah, for sure,
it definitely like it makes it alittle more exciting, for sure.

(39:22):
Yeah, on the ice of course, Now you're one of the I guess
veteran leaders on this team. Ofcourse, even though it just kind of
feels like yesterday for me, rememberyou watching your first year here at ASU.
But Anthony Daud a player that isso similar in terms of the type
of game from a defenseman that youplay. What is the relationship that you
have with him? Like and haveyou kind of taken him under your wing?

(39:45):
I think I have obviously I kindof hung out with him all day
today. Yeah, yeah, thereyou go. We have our like secret
Santa gift exchange tomorrow. So everybodywas kind of scrambling all over the place
that in its fourth doubter, canyou give us a I wish I could,
honestly, but I could say,my guests pretty good. That might

(40:06):
be a fine in kangaroo court later. Well, yes, yes, well
I have to ask him on Fridayabout Yeah, yeah, you guys can,
but no, yeah, it was. Our relationship is great. We
hang out a bunch He's one ofmy closest buddies on the team for sure,
and like right off the bat,it was kind of awesome to see
that, like a player like meis like come to the school and just
makes me feel really like it makesme feel really appreciated for the player I

(40:30):
am. And you know, it'sit's just a really really good thing for
the school because I know, likewhat what he can do with the puck
and the plays he can make, and it's just it's only going to go
up from here for him. Sohe's yeah, yeah, he's fun to
watch it. And and you aretoo, And I alluded to this in
my intro, but you you lovegetting fancy with the punk. I mean,

(40:51):
like like sometimes too much. ButI told you I was gonna give
you a little bit of slack forthis. But you know, look,
when it works, it's super funto watch, right And I'm sure it's
super fun to do when it works. But I guess I'm wondering, like,
at what point do you determine allright to spin move here or a
toad drag here. Maybe it's alittle bit too risky or you know what,

(41:13):
you know, when you're back inthe defensive zone. I mean,
you're defenseman after all, Like, what what's your thought process there? I
think it just basically comes to me, like during the game if I can
actually like do something or to makesomeone think a certain way, you know,
it's just I know it kind ofcomes natural. But again, like
I obviously do things for certain reasons. It's not just to be fancy for
the hawk, but yeah, no, it's it's part of my game and

(41:37):
I think it's a strong suit ofmy game as well. But obviously sometimes
it can go one way or theother there, so kind of make sure
the ice is pretty smooth before Ican actually pull certain stuff off. It's
why morning skit is so important.Exactly where did you learn those skills?
Where'd you learn the game of hockey? Like what was your hockey upbringing?
Like, I hate to admit it, but it was all my father.
So probably the worst to say rightnow, but no, no, it's

(42:01):
it was great. So he's kindof basically taught me everything I know.
And I don't think i'd be whereI am today if it wasn't grim.
So you are regularly and I don'tknow if I'm saying something that I'm not
supposed to but you're regularly the lastguy on the bus on road trips,
but you are also regularly the lastguy off the ice, especially at practice

(42:22):
or those morning skates. Has italways been like this, is there like
a story behind that? I don'tknow if there's really a story. I
mean the bus thing that could theyjust be me being lazy and late?
He too though the same? Yeah, yeah, no, But for games
obviously, I like to like havemy headphones on and then if guys say,
like it's four forty five bus,I'll be on the bus like four

(42:43):
forty four so that we so youknow, we yes, we can leave,
like I don't have to wait. But no, Yeah, it's the
on ice thing obviously. I thinkit's the fact that just I love hockey
kind of a hockey year. Ithink everybody knows that. Yeah, And
whenever I'm doing I just want tomake sure like I'm doing it to the
best of my ability and like whateverit is, if that's either walking,

(43:05):
blue line shooting, parks, stickhandling, I always just want to get
better at what I do. SoI think that's probably a little OCD for
me, but no, it's it'sit's definitely a good thing. In my
my part take. So always goodto have that routine, that's for sure.
Now this weekend though, another bigchance as always as an independent,
to add on to that resume, another chance to win a trophy. Start

(43:28):
off with Harvard on Friday. What'sit gonna take to come away with a
successful weekend? Yeah, Harvard,obviously I I I have a buddy on
the team from there, Ryan,Ryan healings Kent's been there. He is
drafted by Miss Little Wild. Talkto him quite a bit. So they're
they're excited to come out, andthey actually do have a really good team
draft pick wise and stuff like that. Obviously their record may not be the

(43:49):
best of its ability right now,but yeah, I feel like every single
year they're a very skilled team. They can beat big teams. So you
know, like it's for us togo into this game. We just got
to go in with confidence and playto our best ability like we have been
so no doubt about it. Allright. We appreciate you coming on so
much. Hope you come back againsoon. I promise not to keep going

(44:09):
to the well. He could bethe first ever three times if you guys
want, Yeah, yeah, we'regonna We're gonna have to consider it,
but we'll keep coming to you.Timmy, you have more eligibility next year,
I do. Yeah, right, good, all right, so we're
making you come back. Go geta burger, have a great night,

for Arizona State's upcoming tournament, letme say to you, my friend,

(48:16):
that I really could never sleep onairplanes. But after we didn't sleep following
Saturday's game, we left the hotelat what like one one thirty am,
drove two and a half hours toAlbany. You drove behind me just so
we'd both stay awake catch the flightback to Phoenix. I slept like a
baby on both my flights, andI think I'm almost caught up now.

(48:37):
Yeah, yes, slept on bothand I'm usually one of those guys.
You got to take care to takeadvantage of everything that a that a flight
gives to you, especially when youget those free upgrades. Yeah, you
gotta get all the snacks, allthe free I slept the whole time I
did. Just give me a waterand I'll sleep. What a waste,
What a waste of a flight foryou. You gotta get that win.
They did, they did. It'sall about it. Yeah, you gotta

(48:58):
rack those up. All right.Let's talk about last weekend up in Lake
Placid, really such an iconic venuefor fans of hockey, but really just
sports fans in general. Right, getting to play at the site of the
nineteen eighty miracle on ice, literallythe same exact spot it took took place.
Both nights, Arizona State fell behindearly, and yet there was no

(49:19):
panic. This is something we talkedabout a lot on our shows, is
the fact that you know, look, you obviously want to get out to
better starts, there's no question aboutit, as you will undoubtedly need to
find a way to do that movingforward. But this is a gritty team
that truly just knows that all ittakes is one spark to get them going.
Yeah, And going back to CoachPowers's answer to one of our questions
earlier, like we've heard identity playedto the identity so often, and finally

(49:45):
clicked to me in that I believeit was the first period of the Cornell
game. It's like when they playedto their identity, they're just simply better
than everybody else that they've played. So you know that you can always go
back to the well and if youplay like the way you're supposed to be
playing, you're going to be fine. Showcased, especially in the Clarkston game.
But against the Cornell team that is, you know, so hard to
play against and has some of thatskill to break away from you, and

(50:08):
you you get down too well, and you're like, okay, you know,
after that first period they're down onenothing, and it was the seven
second power play goal for Cornell, but you felt like you dominated the rest
of the nineteen minutes and fifty threeseconds of that. But I also liked
I like things that are parallel andeasy to I like that, you know,
to nothing. The two to onegoal was scored by Jackson Diede Meyer.

(50:34):
The game tying goal was scored youknow, ten seconds into the third
period on a power play, andthen of course Kyle Smollen that's the winner
in both games. So finding aways to to you know, have those
things comes from anybody in this weekend. It was those guys. Listen,
if that's how it's going to godown every weekend, I don't think either
of us are complaining, right,And just to put a ball on last

(50:54):
weekend, I will say, socool for me to be at Herbrooks Arena.
It was for you. I meanI could literally feel the history in
that place. Surreal to see allthe names up in the rafters. The
tournament organizers were fantastic, that theexperience was top notch. And I'll remember
that weekend forever, as I'm sureSun Devil players, coaches, you and

(51:15):
everybody who went with it was socool and as I said after the shootout
on Saturday, like we're gonna rememberit even more, especially because they won,
they bring the trophy back. Butto make it about us even you
know, it's not about us,never about us, Tyler, but like
we were walking up the steps andyou're like, yeah, al Michael's one
time walked up these steps. That'san immediate you know chills, right,

(51:37):
sundal al Mike exactly. Yeah, and uh, you know, so the
layers of how cool that was,the history there, it's something that you
know, it's it's only hockey. Are you gonna get an opportunity to do
something like that at the collegiate level? Yeah? Super cool. We'll remember
it truly forever. Yeah, allright, let's come back to the Dartmouth
series for a moment. I askedcoach Powers whether he thought it was a

(51:57):
missed opportunity. His first answer was, I don't know, but I got
the sense that like it was kindof a yes. Like you know,
look, I think the best wayto describe it is it didn't hurt too
much in the pair wise, butfrankly, look those are both winnable games.
They got to win those games.Yeah, definitely is. You look
at Dartmouth, they lead the countryand ties, as coach Powers mentioned asu

(52:20):
as two of them. Clarkson haswon, and the team that you're gonna
play here soon, Harvard has alsotied them. I don't remember much because
it was so far away, butI do remember that second game. Just
how much as you dominated, butas coach Powers said, ran into a
great goaltender. And sometimes that happensin college hockey. Perhaps we have a
little bit easier of a time, remembering the Robert Morris series that was just
a couple of weeks ago. We'reso close to the ice. Not seriously,

(52:44):
we may as well have suited upfor that one. It showed asu.
Look, they were simply the moreskilled team out on the ice.
A few mental errors early on Sunday. I know coach Powers didn't love his
team's play in particular on Saturday, but it was clear which team was in
command. And that weekend. Yeah, we said this a couple of times
this year. That series went exactlyhow that series should have gone. You

(53:07):
should have swept them. It shouldhave been in convincing, convincing fashion.
It definitely was on that second night. And to see again, you don't
want to fall behind two, nothingbut the resiliency of this group to win
the rest of that game eight toone, and how much they did take
over and when they got ahead bytwo, they didn't stop. They wanted

(53:28):
to go for the kill. Theydidn't want to let the team back in
it. Because you can see youknow, I don't want to compare Robert
Morris in Denver, but Denver, you went up three nothing and they were
not out of that game. Theycame back, And so to push that
one all the way through for afull sixty was good to see. Yeah,
it certainly was. All right. When I take a step back and
look at the first twenty two gamesof this year, I think the theme

(53:49):
of this team, for better orworse, has been that resiliency. Right,
ASU's never out of it. Downone, down, two, down,
three doesn't matter. And I thinkthat's a characteristic of a lot of
teams who go on to be chaampionshiplevel contenders. Right, Yeah, that's
one you can't quit because, Imean, just look at that. You
mentioned the playoff earlier in college football. Look at all the ebbs and flows
of one singular game in a tournamentwhen teams are that evenly matched, Right,

(54:15):
you're gonna have a five minute segmentwhere it goes really well for one
team and then all of a sudden, a power play flips it the other
way and they're gonna get to capitalizeon something like that. So be able
to do that, to go throughthat in games on the road, moments
in a season and all of that. It's really good to see. But
again, I want to go backto a little bit what I mentioned earlier

(54:36):
with coach powers. The team hasplayed twenty two games and lost three of
them. Yeah, no matter ifpairwise, all they're gonna rank ASU where
they're gonna rank them like that isamazing And how much fun that that provides
everybody is just something that that thathopefully is going to carry them through best
team on campus, right, Yeah, crazy, pretty gosh darn cool,

(54:58):
isn't it? All? Right? With the a little bit of time left,
let's chat about this weekend. Harvardnot great this year, but we
know nobody can be taken lightly.ASU really wants to get a chance to
play for the Desert Hockey Classic Championshipon Saturday. What area of ASU's play
do you have your eye on tobe the difference maker this week? In
talking to the guys, it's,you know, they say the identity,
but that's a lot of the fiveon five play and finding a way to

(55:21):
get into the Ford check. Coachpower is mentioned against Clarkson. Once you're
able to get a team to simplyhave to chip it out of their zone,
and once they do get it outof their zone, they're dumping it
to get a change, and thenyou can just get it to go back
in finding a way to get intothat. Take it to a Harvard team,
and then hopefully set yourself up toplay an Omaha team that is a
top twenty five team in the pairwise, which will be a very nice opportunity

(55:44):
to add to your resume. Yeah, can't wait for it. Should be
a really fun weekend. We areback at Mullet Arena for the Desert Hockey
Classic, first of a ten gamehomestand for Sun Devil Hockey Game one against
Harvard, Game two against either Umass Loll or Nebraska Omaha. You can
