the course light first period of HellFrozen Over. Now alongside Coach Powers,
the voice of Sun Devil Hockey TylerPley, we are coming down to crunch
(00:23):
time in the college hockey season, when every game has even more meaning and
the pair wise rankings we'll start toshuffle just about every weekend. Arizona State
is still in the hunt. Withten games to go. The Sun Devils
likely need to win out to standa chance at the tournament birth. They'll
also need some help from other teamsaround the league, but they will focus
on themselves, aim to do theirjob and take care of business to reach
(00:45):
the goal ASU has been shooting forsince October Hi. Everybody, welcome into
season two, episode eight of HellFrozen Over Live tonight from Cold Beers and
Cheeseburgers in Arcadia for the next hourhere on Fox Sports nine ten and streaming
on the iHeartRadio app. I'm TylerPaley, the radio play by play broadcaster
of Sun Devil Hockey. Happy tohave you along as we discussed the team's
(01:06):
latest news and notes and get youready for another week of college hockey.
Joining me tonight every show this yearare Arizona State head coach Greg Powers and
my broadcast partner Alex Coyle. Gentlemen, good to see you as always.
Coach. First things first, Iwant to ask you about the crazy ending
of the Coyotes Penguins game last night. Let me phrase it this way,
(01:26):
how furious would you be if thatwas your team that put an own goal
in on an empty net? Orwell, it was a second period,
it wasn't the end. Yeah,I guess. Yeah, that's fair.
I mean, like it happens. We actually have had that happen to as
we were. We had the goaliepulled at Quinnipiac when they were third in
the country. This is three yearsago, and I won't say the player's
(01:48):
name because he's still on our team. He actually did to us, So,
yeah, what's happened to us.That's brutal. Yeah, I can't
imagine. Wow, Okay, allright, look as he looks backwards,
I wasn't gonna do it him.I was remiss not to ask you this
last weekend but you had some visitorsover at Mullet. It was alumni weekend.
(02:10):
I saw a bunch of familiar faceswho came to say hello to you.
How cool was it to see someof your Sun Devil hockey alone?
I saw him all. We sawthem all throughout the entire weekend. But
after the Saturday game, the alumniall get together and we go and hang
out with them and get to talktalk to them and catch up and see
what they was new in their livesand what they're doing. And they could
ask us all about the program andwhat's going on with the program that they
(02:35):
helped us build. So it wasgreat to see all those guys. And
it's no surprise at all. They'rethey're pretty much to a man, all
very successful doing what they're doing inand out of hockey. Yeah, pretty
cool to see all of them showup at Mullet. And I know it's
the second year, but I'm surestill kind of you know, them seeing
that place and seeing what they helpedto build was super cool for them.
All Right, we do have twoseries to recap tonight. I know Alex
(02:58):
is eager to ask a bunch ofquestions. Well, so let's talk about
Cornell and August Stana. We'll startwith the Big Red. Game. One
started well first five minutes. Yourguys really controlled the tempo. Things are
looking good. The Big Red thentook over. They scored two unanswered goals
in the third period. Your guysrallied like they've been doing all season long,
tied the game. We'd go toovertime again, but this time it
(03:20):
wasn't a thrilling Sun Devil win.It was a Cornell game winning goal in
the final two minutes to get thevictory. I know you were really proud
of your guys, however, forgutting it out simply to bring that one
to two. Yeah, for sure. It was a good comeback. And
we hate losing obviously any game.I'm well it, especially in overtime.
It's the first time we've lost thegame in overtime at Mullet and you know,
it just hurts a little bit morewhen you get scored on and the
(03:43):
game's over and the kid to scorethat goal. I think Robertson has been
He's a really good player. He'sstill draft eligible. He's going to get
drafted, probably pretty high this year, maybe third round, and even in
Lake Placid in overtime. That kidcontrolled the entire over time. Yep,
So we were we were fortunate andTJ made some huge saves and like Placid
(04:04):
to to keep it alive and andhe made some big saves in this one
too, But he was on theice pretty much the entire overtime in both
of those games, and he justvery good three on three. So he
made a hell of a play andhad a nice goal and that's just the
way. We've had a ton ofthose this year too, and just didn't
go ourway that night. That washis first collegiate goal too, so pretty
(04:25):
special for him. Yeah, he'she's almost a pointed game, but that
was his first goal. He's he'sa really good player. In that second
game, he guys fall behind, but then you make the decision to change
goaltenders and go with Gibson Homer andhe has twenty two saves in that effort.
Yeah, you know, coming inin relief. What about coming in
relief that he what did he dowell to make sure he stayed ready and
(04:47):
and answered the bell when he camein. Well, I mean, any
any goalie you know that's not starting. They have to they have to go
through their their pregame routine and staymentally engaged. You never know when somebody
in front of he is gonna gethurt. Tour, a coach is going
to make gage just to change upthe the mojo and and the flow of
the game and to kind of wakethe bench up a little bit. And
really that's what that one was,you know, TJ. The third goal
(05:11):
Cornell scored was was not a goodone, but you could tell he just
wasn't completely sharp like he always is, and and it was a good time
to get Gibby in down three andkind of reset the bench and wake him
up a little bit, and andit worked. Gibby. Gibby was really
good. He held a fourth downcop had a big power play goal to
cut the three one, and itreally felt like we could we could come
back. You know, I don'tthink there was a doubt with anybody on
(05:34):
that bench that we could do itagain. And their goalie was really good
and and they're they're a hell ofa team. You're going to see them
as a top ten team, Ithink very soon for the rest of the
season. And we had a wehad some good battles with him, and
you you called that in Lake Plastow. I give you credit because obviously the
IVY start later than a lot ofcollege hockey teams, and and you know,
(05:55):
it's hard to get a full pictureby the midway point of the season
when so many teams, you know, what, did you have like fifteen
games under your belt by then?Maybe even more. Cornell had like less
than ten at the time we firstsaw them, So it was it was
they just hammered Princeton and they justthey just be Quinnipiac. Right. They're
very very good hockey team, veryvery good hockey team. Definitely one to
(06:15):
watch for the NCAA tournament. Allright, let's talk about last weekend.
Augustana was in town. Fun factthat we picked up on Alex Young and
Dana Borges were reunited with former Colgateteammates Arnova Sean and Anthony Stark. Game
one pretty pretty much as as youknow, good a start as you could
ask for. You're up to nothingin the first You're dominating puck possession,
(06:39):
but the Vikings scored twice on theirfirst four shots to tie the game.
We'd go back and forth until thirtyone seconds were left in the third.
Augustana would score the game winning goalto seal a five to four victory.
That one stings so much because upand down the StatSheet it really wasn't close.
It could have been a six toone victory for ASU, Yeah,
and it felt like it should havebeen. You know, it to their
(07:00):
goalie. He gave up two earlyones and and then he really you know,
buckled down and held that team inthe game. And they were opportunistic
again. You know, I've saidit, you know, I don't think
TJ was at his sharpest, andhe'd be the first to admit it.
And he's been so good for usall year that that that that was bound
to happen. And and it wasjust one of those games where where it
(07:23):
just seemed like even when Gibby wentin, you know, there wasn't a
lot of pressure on him or sustainedoozone time. They just were really opportunistic
and found a way to pop fivegoals. And when you give up five,
very rarely are you going to win. We have, but but it's
it's usually not going to go yourway, you know. But we had
(07:43):
fourteen scoring chances to their three thirtyeight shots of their fifteen. We doubled
possession time we're better at the faceoff that where we probably lost the game
with special teams obviously, because wegave up a power play goal, we
gave up a shorthanded goal, andwe only had one power play goal ourselves.
You know, it was it wasa frustrating loss because we really felt
(08:03):
like we we played good enough towin and we're certainly the better team on
the night. Yeah, and thenyou guys bounce back in the right way,
winning three two, and you doit without your captain of course,
Tyler Gratton was out with the injury. But given where the group was heading
into that game lost three straight, how proud of your team were you?
And how comforting is it to knowthat no matter who's out there on the
(08:26):
ice, the group can come backand fight like that. It was.
It was really impressive, you know, just to see a lot of our
veteran guys really stepped up and playedplayed really well, especially like guys like
Benji and Cop and you know,oh just just just really stepped up and
took it to another gear to getthat win for us, you know,
(08:46):
and then having young guys on thebench that haven't played a ton like Matthew
Romer and David Haimovich just gave thebench in the room so much energy.
You know, it was it wasIt was a fun game. It was
probably a better hockey game than forbecause I thought august Ana played a lot
better than they did on Friday. But our guys found a way to win,
like they have pretty much all year. It was good to win a
(09:07):
game like that after losing one inovertime and then obviously losing the way we
did Friday. That's just a gutwrencher. So to come back the very
next day after losing a game thateverybody in our room knew we probably should
have won, not probably should have, was really impressive. I was proud
of them. Yeah, it wasa It was a pretty impressive win.
And you don't get back in thewin column no matter how it goes.
(09:28):
That's a good thing. Look,I want to talk big picture here,
and you already know this, butAlex and I tend to get in the
weeds a little bit with the pairwise trying to make sense of the path
forward. You'd probably consider us amateurs, which is fair, but that's why
we have this show to talk toyou, so you could set us straight
here. Layout that I would Iwould consider Yeah, I know, I
know, and we are and that'sthat's a fair assessment. But but I
(09:52):
want you to set the path forus here. What does your team need
to do? What you know otherteams need to help you guys out How
much margin for error is there atthis point to make the turn. There's
not a lot of margin for error. But but we also believe that we're
the best team left in all tengames that we have left, you know.
So if our guys play the rightway and they're bought in and they're
(10:13):
all pulling the rope in the samedirection, every cliche you can you can
lay out, we'll keep winning games, you know. And and all we
can do is play the schedule infront of us. That's all we have
done to this point. We haveone of the best records in college hockey.
We're not going to apologize for winninggames in overtime. That's the system
that they have as play and we'resuccessful under those premises, and and and
(10:35):
there's no apologizing for it. It'sthat simple. So you know, we're
just gonna keep playing. We're justgonna keep winning and and and let it
take care of itself. But wegenuinely believe if we do that, well,
we'll get in. Yeah, thisweekend, though, you have an
opportunity to watch some games, right. I know you're a fan of college
hockey and watch games all the time. But how much scoreboard watching are you
gonna do this weekend? Uh?I mean quite a bit, you know,
(10:58):
I mean, I mean it's it'swhere we're at. You know,
when you don't have that conference playoffto to, you know, have a
second life. And even the teamsthat go into the conference playoffs have the
opportunity to win their playoff to getthe AUTOBID, but they also get the
opportunity to win five more six moregames and boost their pair wise, so
(11:18):
we don't get that, you know. And and so you know, teams
could get in that are fourteen fifteenand then lose two in a three game
series and fall below us. There'sso many things that could happen. But
you know, we've we've been verytransparent with our players and telling them where
we are and what we need todo and who to kind of cheer against.
It's in the cluster in front ofus where we need help and all
(11:41):
those things. But so it's it'sthe reality that we live as an independent
We're enjoying it and treating this askind of a badge of honor the last
season of independent play at ASU andand our team has done an unbelievable job
with it, and our record, you know, speaks for itself. And
they're a great group of kids thathave really put us in a great position.
(12:01):
Who are we rooting for or againstthis weekend? Well, I mean,
I think it's it's pretty clear anybodythat that's really you know, nine
to fifteen, and the pair wise, you know, you don't want to
win, yeah, you know, and anyone that's directly behind you you also
don't want to win. So youknow, look, the pairwise this year,
in the two years that we madethe tournament, it was very friendly
(12:22):
to us. It liked us.This year, it doesn't seem to love
us. But but we did losethree straight and only drop one spot.
So the equity that we built inthe RPI and all the wins that we
stacked up really helped us maintain ourfooting and keeps us within striking distance.
So it all balances out in theend. And that's why I genuinely believe
(12:43):
if we just take care of business, focus on getting two wins against Lenna
Wood and go from there. We'llbe just fine. Don't worry. Coach
Tyler and I, I should sayI had a list of seventeen games last
weekend that we were focused on thatcould help HURU. We had a nice
one on Sunday with New Hampshire.New Hampshire losing and they bumped down five
spots, so you know, thatwas a good one. But you know,
(13:07):
there's a lot of hockey left, and it's like it always happens,
those conferences really start to cannibalize themselvesas they go deeper into getting closer to
the conference tournament. So you know, we'll just keep watching. This is
so fascinating. I actually had liketwelve more questions about this, but we
do have to go to break,so I'll just fit in one more last
one. This is about the guywe've got coming up in the second period,
(13:31):
Matthew Copperude. He's coming up onone hundred collegiate points, leads the
nation in power play and game winninggoals. What does he meant to this
team and what will he mean downthe stretch in the final ten plus something.
Well, I'm just happy that he'sworked so hard to get healthy.
You know, it's been a yearand a half really since he's been able
to play like he can play, you know. And he he didn't throw
(13:54):
in the towel. He didn't giveup. He worked really hard over the
summer, more than than really anyany summer and was there every day working
out with Leanne and getting his bodyright. And I thought that five on
five his best game of his careerwas Saturday night and he willed us to
a win. And it wasn't becausehe scored. He he was willing to
(14:15):
be an f one on a fourcheck and got the goalie to cough up
a puck and we got a biggo ahead goal. And at the end
reloaded like he like you know,he really you know, just was shot
out of a cannon, which isfor him hard to do. And uh
it made a hell of a playto Chambo and got us a win.
So played really really good hockey, winning hockey. And we're gonna need that
(14:37):
out of him in the last tengames, and we'll we'll get it out
of him. Such a critical pieceto this team has been for a long
time now. Well, some restand relaxation this week before it's back to
the grind to finish off the season. Coach Powers, We'll be back to
preview the path ahead in the thirdperiod. Coach, appreciate you as always
up next the Sun Devil Forward andalternate Captain who continues to lead the nation
(14:58):
in some key categories so it providesus every time he's on the ice.

hockey. We're live every other Tuesdaythis season from Cold Beers and Cheeseburgers now

(18:33):
here tonight, we do have anothershow coming up in two weeks time.
Believe that is February sixth, Correctme if I'm wrong, Sean Cresman,
I believe it is February six We'llgo with that, so we hope you
consider joining us. Then come grabsome delicious food and talk college hockey with
us. So last season, oneof the Sun Devil's best scores was hurt
for a majority of the year,Matthew copperu not quite feeling like himself to
(18:56):
a nagging knee injury. It's oneof the many Sundale who would have to
deal with injuries over the course ofthat season. But this year he's been
rejuvenated, playing among the most minutesof any sun devil and having the scoring
stats to back it up. Onceagain. Cop is live with us now
on Health Frozen Over. Good tosee you as always, sir. Sorry
it's taken us so long to haveyou on, but I think this timing
(19:17):
is actually pretty great. We havea lot to talk about tonight. Yeah,
it's perfect. I'm excited all right. So first things first, how
are you feeling this year? Howis your knee feeling? Coach just got
done talking about your recovery over thesummer, so tell us about it.
Yeah, body feels good. Yep. I was dealing with a lot of
knee injuries last year, but definitelyover the summer put in the work.
I was in the gym all thetime with Leanne, and this year I
(19:38):
have had no problems. And itfeels great. That's awesome, that's great.
How much fun has this season beenthough so far? Like, hey,
you know, of course, lasttwo weekends you double your loss total,
but like the first twenty two gamesof the season you lose only three
times, and it seems like theentire group was having a blast. Yeah,
it's a lot more fun to winthan but yeah, we're having a
(20:02):
lot of fun with it this year, and we got to keep going for
the last ten games here and haveto try and win out. But it's
been a lot of fun so far. What about the group makes it fun?
I think just everybody's so connected withinthe group, like everybody's friends off
the ice and stuff. There's noclicks or anything. Everybody could hang out
with everybody and it just makes ita lot of fun. Freshmen our friends
with seniors, which is really coolto see on that same token. And
(20:25):
I don't want to be a downerhere, but I am curious, like
going through that adversity, like whatis your message to the team or how
did you guys, how did youfeel like you responded? Because you haven't
faced a whole lot of adversity thisyear, what was the response over the
last two weekends. Yeah, Ithink it was just to keep going.
We know what we have within thegroup and stuff. We lost those three
games there, but I don't thinkthat brought us down too much at all.
(20:48):
We just knew we had to tryand get back into the win column
and it was nice to get iton Saturday night. We wish we got
it on Friday night, but we'lltake Saturday so how it goes sometimes?
Sure, Yeah, before we getinto the stats, you are the final
alternate captain we've had on the showthis year, So I'll ask you the
same thing I've asked all four othersor all three other alternates. What did
(21:10):
it mean to you to be votedin by your teammates as a captain and
to wear that letter each night?Yeah? It was awesome. I mean
being here for four years, yousee the captains who have been here before.
It's something you want to live upto. And it was a lot
of fun to get in and receiveit. And I love that my teammates
and stuff were able to help meout there, and it was awesome.
Yeah. Is that a goal ofyour Like? Was that a goal of
(21:30):
yours heading into the season? Yeah, it was definitely something I was thinking
about. I mean, I've neverhad one on any team I've played on,
so it was definitely cool to getit. For sure. I feel
like I know the answer to thisquestion. But what what's your leadership style?
Are you more of a vocal leaderor example kind of get Uh?
That could go either way either game. Sometimes it's example, or sometimes it
(21:55):
could be me using my voice aswell. You know, one thing I've
noticed, and correct me if I'mwrong, is that you've embraced, again
from our perspective, more of likean enforcer role. You defend your teammates
to make sure the other team knowsyou're there. Do you feel like that's
become a bigger part of your identityor was I just missing something for the
last four years. I don't knowif i'd call it an enforcer role or
(22:17):
more of someone who likes to geton their people's skin. If I seating,
I absolutely love seeing it. Yeah, I don't know if i'd be
in there if there's a fight, but I could definitely start up the fight
for sure, and then you probablysee me sneaking out the backside of it.
But can you explain to us whatwent down at the end of that
first August in a game where likeyou're trying to get the puck out in
the corner and then like you gotput in a headlock. Yeah, yeah,
(22:40):
I realized when the guy pinned thepuck on the boards, there is
no time left, so I prettymuch I tried to make him feel it
for the next night and stuff, and then the rest was history from there.
I mean that's hockey though, right, anything to get on that power
player or a four on four wereare so lethal. Yeah, exactly.
It was a lot of fun,all right. Obviously, the power play
right in the season as a wholehas been fantastic. You continue to lead
(23:06):
the nation with eleven power play goalsup to this point. You told Alex
last week that you attribute that inlarge part to your chemistry with the guys
on that unit, particularly Tim Lovell. Is there anything else to it other
than the confidence and the experience inplaying with one another? Uh? Yeah.
Lucas Cyllinger helps a lot too. He's dangerous. Yep. Those two
(23:27):
definitely make it pretty easy for youon the other side to just find the
open ice and stuff. They'll doall the work and they're two extremely smart
players. That just they make itvery easy to play when you're out there.
What fascinates me is like one onesequence, you could be incredibly patient,
right wait for a lane to openup and just kind of fire a
rister. Another you're waiting for ayou know, one time pass from from
(23:51):
timmy up top. What are youlooking for on different power plays or is
it just kind of situational like feelingit out as they come. Yeah,
it's situational, and definitely we runplays and stuff too, so sometimes I'm
thinking about what's gonna happen next orwhere we're gonna have to set up,
But a lot of times it's situationaland see if I have a shot or
don't have a shot, or tryand pass it and stuff. Got it
(24:12):
and the group had been so lethalin one of the strengths of the team
for the first majority of the season. Last couple of weekends it struggled a
little bit. Do you guys feellike you're struggling because it looks good.
It seems like you guys are stillgetting those good opportunities. It's just not
going in the net. Yeah.I mean we can feel it too that
it's not going in the net.But I think when we're out there on
(24:32):
a lot of those power plays andstuff as well, we're dominating. We're
controlling the play in their end.Like Friday versus August Siana, I think
we're in their end for the fulltwo minutes yep, at the end of
the one period, So it justdidn't go in, but eventually it will
start to go in. Do youfeel like there's something that needs to change
a little bit or is it justone of the like everything goes into a
rut. That's tip. I thinkwe just have to stick with it.
(24:53):
I think every time you look atwhen players are trying to score goals and
stuff, they don't score every game. They'd be the best, it'd be
Austin Matthews, but it's Matthew Coppery. The teams figure out what we try
doing stuff, and then they canread it and we have to try and
counter that and we'll get back ontoit. For the last ten here,
aside from the power play, youpersonally have been really big for this team
(25:18):
in kind of some key moments duringgames this season. You also lead the
nation with six game winning goals, which I chalk up to the fact that
you're pretty darn clutch. What makesyou give just you know, perhaps a
little extra juice or just be inthe right place at the right time during
those critical portions of games. Yeah, I try to keep sort of like
the time out of my head.I mean, you know, the score
(25:40):
of the entire game, or whenyou need to score and when you don't
need to score. But if youstart to think about that more and more,
then start to grip your stick alittle too tight and then it does
always work out. Yeah. Oneof the things that I admire about your
game is how competitive you are.And we spoke during one of the pregame
interviews this week about competition in practiceand even some side bets on who scores
(26:02):
the most goals in practice. Howmany times has somebody bought you lunch this
year? I normally I've had somepeople buy me some lunches. You've got
some lunch. I've also had tobuy a lot of people lunches as well.
That goes with it. Yeah, what usually goes into those competitions between
(26:22):
players during practice? I think justlike everybody wants to win and everybody wants
to be the best when they're outthere, and one way to do that
is to keep scoring, make minigames within the games, and then that
keeps the competition up within just youand then the person that you're going against
as well. Let me ask aboutyour goaltenders, and I use the plural
because they've both been fantastic, rightTJ. Over the course of this season
(26:48):
has been this team's rock. Gibsonhas has come in started five games,
come in in relief a couple oftimes, and he's done just about everything
that anybody could ask for. What'syour confidence level in the netminders, no
matter who's in net on any givennight. Yeah, we trust both of
them. And definitely when you goout and you can trust both your goalies,
it makes you a lot. Itmakes a lot easier to go out
(27:08):
and play the game that you wantto play knowing that you have those two
guys to back you up, andhaving TJ back there for most of the
year, it makes it pretty easyknowing that he's probably going to bail you
out or something and stuff. Justa little bit weight off your chest.
It is. Well can also comein and do the same thing, and
it's really nice to have ya.Do you feel like that kind of opens
up your game as well, knowingthat you know you can push a little
(27:30):
bit more toward the offensive. Ithink it sort of opens up the team
game and everything because you can youcan try and make plays that you might
not make if you don't trust yourgoalie back there. You feel a little
bit more confident when you have thepuck, for sure. There's a couple
more as we wind down here withour time in the second period. Look
there, how confident. Are youthat this is a team come tournament time
(27:55):
that should be in the field ofsixteen and what makes you believe? Yeah?
I think if we do what weknow we can do for these next
ten games, will be there andthen we'll be a team that people are
going to start to look at whenwe get there. I think we have
to. We can't look forward tothe tournament right now when we have linden
Wood coming up here next Friday. When you look back a fourth year of
(28:18):
the program, when you look backat your time here, what are you
gonna remember most? What do youreflect on? And you know how excited
or how much does that motivate youfor this final ten game stretch. Yeah,
I mean it's awesome. I've spentfour years of my life here,
four years of probably the best timeof my life here. I mean,

It's been a lot of fun.It's nothing. I wouldn't change it for
the world, and I for thesenext ten games, going to do it
for that. It's been a lotof fun watching you too, my friend
I wish you nothing but the bestand still get to watch you for at

fun question. Maybe this is fun, maybe it's stressful for you. Before
(33:04):
we dive back into your team,I want to ask you about jerseys.
Which college hockey team do you thinkhas the second best sweaters? I think
it's hard to argue we have thebest ones, but I will say there
are some others that are pretty sweet. Yeah, you know, I've always
really appreciated mains. Okay, that'smy number two. I completely expect that
one to come out. Yeah. What do you think of Michigan? Michigan
(33:27):
State like that? Have you seenthis? Yeah? They look good.
Yeah, I don't know. There'ssome hot takes out. I don't like
Michigan State's like old school script.Okay, I think they need to refresh
from that. I think are ourgold ones that just say Arizona State are
my favorite jerseys. They're nice,They're really nice. All right, let's
dive back in. I want toget an injury report from you, if
(33:50):
you don't mind, Tyler Gratton,ty Jackson, what are their statuses?
Could we see them come the lindenWood Series in two weeks. I think
there's a really good chance you couldhe tie Jackson back that's great. He's
starting to skate, and you know, if he gets cleared, it could
be a situation where we ease himback in that series and maybe as the
extra skater and give him some somepower play time and just kind of ease
(34:13):
him back in so we can reallyhave him ramped up and playing really well
for us, you know, thelast eight games, and what a shot
in the arm that would get ifwe get him back, especially offensively,
and just to have more depth downthe middle, which is huge. Tyler
Gratton. We'll know more tomorrow onwhat what to expect with his injury.
H We we are not anticipating greatnews, unfortunately, but we'll know more
(34:37):
tomorrow. Not to tease too much, but he means so much to our
team and and and so we werehoping for for good news, but we
don't know, you know. AndI think that it's again speaks volume to
to the rest of our team andhow well they've done. I mean,
we went almost two months without losinga game without our first line center and
(35:00):
first line right wing. It's noteasy to do. So it's it's our
guys generally have the the next manup mentality. Whatever we face, we'll
get through it. You know,we won without Grats on Saturday, and
it felt different without him, itdid. He's he's so good on the
bench. He's such a good leader. He's so good in the room that
we missed him. You could feelhis presence not there, but our guys
(35:22):
found a way. Of course, you mentioned next man up, and of
course last weekend it was David Haimovich. Got to see him skate for the
first time in his collegiate career. How cool was that to see him on
it? Yeah, it was awesome. Mean, he got about four shifts
and and he he played the wayhe needed to play. You know,
his first shift was a really goodshift, you know, to to go
(35:43):
in in a must win game. And I think his first shift we already
down a goal and he had shehas sure hands, he has a huge
i Q. He got it out, he got it in, He finished
some hits. But what the whathe really brought was was energy. Because
he's it's probably the best teammate wehave. Our guys really really appreciate his
(36:05):
support and how engaged he stayed throughoutthe entire year, how hard he works
off the ice. On the ice, he's almost the first one there last
one out every day and just asstuck with it, you know. So
he earned that and and he'll earnsome more here as we go. But
the energy he brought in the room, he did the starting lineup, the
energy he brought on the bench waswas unbelievable. Also really good accounting.
(36:29):
As the bona fide guy on roadtrips who counts everybody on the bus.
He has not messed up once. He's a smart kid. There's no doubt
about that, no question. Allright, I know you're still confident in
your goaltender, TJ. Sentim Felter. I know you loved the way that
Gibbie proved once again he can startand win games with ten games to go.
What should we expect here? Shouldwe expect some sort of even split
(36:52):
in starts? Is TJ still theguy who will get a bulk of them?
What should we be thinking here?Well, you know, it's it's
like with everything, it's it's weakedand and I go with my gut,
you know, And and you know, I think, you know, I
probably should have gone with with Gibbeyin the second Cornell game if I could
go back, because if you lookat TJ's run up until then. You
(37:13):
know, we came back from areally no break where he played both games
at Robert Morris. We go allthe way out east of Lake Placid.
He stands on his head, hewins us a trophy, we come back
play in the Desert Classic. He'sunbelievable against Omaha, wins us another trophy.
The first game against Cornell really reallygood. We losing overtime. He
probably needed a spell there. Sothat that's on me, you know.
(37:35):
And and but I just believe inthe kids so much that you know,
I you know, I wanted togo back with it, and and uh
so it's kind of a blind faiththing. And and I know he appreciates
that, and it's true, it'sgenuine I have it. But Gibby's been
so good when called upon him. He's held Dartmouth to a goal, Miami
Ohio to a goal. He hada great start and held Augustan at the
(37:55):
two. He was unbelievable in reliefagainst Cornell. So chance he's gotten.
He's performed too. So can Itell you what the split's gonna be?
I can't. We're just very thankfuland very lucky to have two very good
goalies yeah, I know TJ isa mentally tough guy. But with going
through something like this is a goalie, what do you do to lift somebody
up from that? Well, Imean, it's it's two games, right,
(38:17):
and and it is what it islike, it's it's gonna happen.
You know the problem with with ifa goalie is not sharp, especially one
that's just good and is flashy andhis athletic as him where where when he's
on, it's so evident, youknow, and he's on almost every time
he starts, but so you know, their last light of defense when they
(38:37):
make mistakes that they let in iskind of a bad goal. It's noticeable
where you know, the average hockeyfan, all the mistakes that led to
that goal don't go really noticed. They go unnotice, you know. So
it's it's it's not on him,you know it that that Friday night game
(38:57):
there was just opportunistic cockey by thatother team and he wasn't his sharpest,
but we we bounced back Saturday. You were a goalie back in your golden
days, right, you guess you'rein you could somewhat call it that.
Well, I mean, but butlike you do, you have do you
feel like you connect with goltend.I know you connect with all your your
(39:19):
guys, right, I think Ithink I can I think I can tell
when when he hasn't and when hedoesn't. Yeah, right, I mean
we we we've we've had him herenow for a year and a half.
And then you know, I tobe fully transparent at in the Cornell game
where I pulled him after the firstperiod, I told Gibby to get ready,
and I told him to get readyin Augustana too, and and so
you can just feel it, youcan see it. You know, he's
(39:42):
just in such control when he's onand and you know he's not kind of
fighting it and swimming and getting caughtout of position from time to time.
He he's he controls the game whenhe is sharp. He is unbelieve he's
one of the best in the country. And and he's so good and and
he's won us a lot of gamesthis year on his own back, and
(40:04):
you could go through the long listof them and he'll be fine. He'll
be fine. He nobody cares aboutwinning more than him. He's a goalie
that if we won that game fiveto four Friday night and he let in
four crappy goals, he'd be ashappy as anybody. Yeah, he just
wants to win. He just wantsto win. And I think you know,
he even said this week maybe focusinga little bit too much on the
result and not stay in processed focused. And but he's such a bought in,
(40:30):
dialed in committed kid to our teamthat that he'll be fine. Well.
To have that self awareness too, just speaks volumes about him. So
that's just who he is. Yeah, all right, So you got no
games this weekend, a rare weekoff this season. What is your practice
schedule look like this week? Andfrankly, how nice is it to have
a weekend off at this particular momentin time. We need it. We
(40:52):
need it, We need it morethan ever. We haven't had a week
off, even even the holidays. The guys didn't get to go home.
We had two showed of a breakto send him home, a long trip
out east and back. We havebeen busting it from the start of the
season more than anybody. Uh,and you can check schedules, we have
not had one break. So theguys need it. Very light week this
week, skills today and then thenprobably some optional stuff. Tomorrow, and
(41:15):
then a light day Thursday, andwe'll give them three days off Friday,
Saturday, Sunday. All the coachesare, all of us will be gone
recruiting, so you know, there'sno rest for us, but they they
need a break and then and thenwe'll get them back fresh on Monday and
and go into the home stretch. You get to go somewhere warm, No
(41:35):
Chicago, Chicago's pretty cold. War. Okay, you touch on this a
couple of shows ago, but Iwant to ask again, how much will
a schedule like this change next year? And once you get into a conference,
it's it's you get breaks. Imean, I already have our schedule
and we have we have I thinkfour breaks during the year, and then
we actually have Thanksgiving off. Wehave you know, uh three three weeks
(41:59):
off over the holiday if we want, you know, so the guys will
all get home for probably good tentwelve days and see theirs and reset.
It is an independent and that's Ithink again. You know, most people
understand how hard it is, butsometimes it's easy to lose sight of how
difficult it is for these kids. You don't get breaks. You have to
play really more regular season games.Bunched in than anyone else because we don't
(42:23):
get our league playoffs. We goto Alaska twice every year, so we
get those exemptions so we can addfour more games to our thirty four game
count. So we're playing thirty eightwhen everybody else plays thirty four, and
we have to play teams in oddweeks where generally a lot of college hockey
teams are off. So you know, going into the league, it's going
to normalize a lot of things forus. Scheduling is going to be the
(42:45):
biggest thing. Yeah, all right, just about a minute lefter. So
so let's talk about your next opponentif you don't mind, because we want
to have a show before that.Lyndon what sixtieth in the pair Wise,
it's a team you swept last yearat mult Arena, including an eight to
two route. Won't have another showuntil then, Like I mentioned, So
what should we know about linden Wood? Big, play hard. It's like
(43:07):
everybody in college hockey, anyone canbe to anyone. They just tied Wisconsin,
and Wisconsin they had a lead late, They've tied Ohio State at Ohio
State. You know they're not tobe taken lightly. Just like everybody else,
you know, and they're a newprogram. But but they're gonna come
in hungry and I think they playstone Hill this weekend. So yeah,
(43:28):
so the rest for us doesn't matterwho we play, it's gonna be it's
it's huge for our guys mentally, physically and in every way. Stone Hill's
got to win this year, right, I hope, So, you know,
I hope. So Dana's gonna losehis mind if they don't feel bad
for the guys. All right, last one before we let you go.
Look, we talked pregame Saturday abouthow passionate Sun Devil Hockey fans are,
(43:49):
right, many of them here tonight, high expectations. They've certainly showed up
this season. What's your message tothem as as this team continues to battle
and how important is it for themto continue to come to games be loud,
give you guys a whole miice advantage. Well, we love, we
love our fans. We love howpassionate they've become, and how how you
know you want your fans to havehigh expectations. That's what it's all about.
(44:12):
We don't want our fans to youknow, celebrate moral victories of having
you know, winning seasons our goals. They get into tournaments and give our
fans something really proud to be uhand excited about. And I just think
they got to keep doing what they'redoing. We've had a great year.
We've won a lot of big gamesin front of them, beating some blue
blood programs. It's the best recordwe've ever had. It's a great group
(44:35):
of kids that are committed to doingeverything the right way on and off the
ice. They're great students. Socontinue to get behind them because they deserve
it and and so far they deliveredwell, said coach Greg Powers on this
Tuesday night. Coach, always lovechatting with you, Appreciate your time.

(49:07):
Perhaps we thought this season wouldn't beas much of a roller coaster as
last year, but maybe we werejust on kind of the initial climb of
the coaster for a good majority ofthe season. Now's the time when the
twists and turns come and it's notjust ASU, it's it's really college hockey
as a whole, is it not. Yeah, I think we're feeling it
more this year because the stakes,if we can feel the stakes, are
(49:30):
higher, because that tournament is stillwithin a possibility, and there were points
last year where you know, wejust knew what the fate was going to
be. The injuries continue to pileup and let's hope that you know,
we're starting to see a little bitthere now, but let's hope that they
stay healthy the rest of the way. What tough news about Grats. I
mean, we don't know, soI don't want to jump to any conclusions,
(49:51):
but paying the way coach Powers wastalking doesn't have me feeling too good.
I mean, anytime you lose yourcaptain, right, no matter what
style of play that they bring,it's it's gonna hurt. But also especially
how he plays and what he's beenable to do to find some of those
gritty and dirty goals in front ofthe net. He's brought a good element
to the team. And I calledCopp an enforcer. Talk about an enforcer
(50:12):
that is crass, right, allright, let's talk about the Cornell series
for as short a time as possible, if you don't mind one that the
Devils needed, certainly really wanted.Cornell was a better team over the weekend.
I don't think there's a question aboutthat. That series wasn't necessarily a
dagger for the Devils, although theydid drop one spot in the pairwise after
(50:34):
that week. Yeah, I mean, we saw what Cornell was going to
bring in Lake Placid. But Ithink the difference really was they got a
week off and ASU did not,and as coach, Powers just got done
saying that the gauntlet of his schedule, you know, in playing weekend after
weekend and even talking to some ofthe guys, they're like, yeah,
like you could feel that they onlyplayed with what thirteen games coming in and
(50:57):
ASU had played twenty three, sothat if they could feel it on the
ice, and that's just one ofthose elements, especially against a team like
Cornell that is so impossible to getthrough with their defensive structure, that that
that's pretty much what caused it.Yeah, and it's the whole team.
Their goaltender, Ian Shane, hewas remarked, I mean he's, you
know, without a doubt of MikeRichter contender this year, you know,
(51:20):
And and that's saying something. SomeDevils have seen some of the best goaltenders
in the nation this year. Imean, Phillips fed back Cooper Black.
Uh, you know, like theythey have seen some really good goaltenders,
and Ian Shane is is right upthere, so pretty impressive. All right.
This last weekend, it was AugustStana. I personally give a su
(51:42):
a lot of credit for not takingthe Vikings lightly. We saw that with
stone Hill. We we experienced thatearlier this season with with them taking a
team lightly. And look, augustStana is in a way better position than
Stonehill. And I mean no disrespect, but that just is the case.
Perhaps they lost focus at times, but they never considered them a lesser opponent.
(52:05):
Game one was crushing because the SunDevils were absolutely dominant and they still
lost. Like you're gonna have gameslike that, but man, that hurts.
Yeah, and I think focus wasthe big word that we talked about
all weekend and the goals you lookat them on tape, they were all
focused things, either the goaltender focusor just simply managing pucks. Yeah,
(52:27):
turnover didn't where it wasn't where itneeded to be. But again you got
to tip your cap to them forcoming back, fighting back without your captain,
uh to win that second game.Game two, yeah, against Augustana
was a good win. We talkeda little bit about this on Saturday.
Last year. It felt like theSun Devils needed to play a lights out
(52:47):
pretty gosh darn near a perfect gameevery single time to win. Right.
This year at large hasn't been likethat. But the last four games have
have kind of felt like that onceagain. Yeah, And I think it's
a combination of the injuries, theguys that you're missing. You missed Ryan
Alexander for a game in there aswell, you know, missing the Jackson's
(53:10):
missing, you know a load ofother guys really and combined with how much
hockey they've played in that short amountof time, they were just gassed and
that turns into laps of focus. It turns into not being able to turn
on the jets that one extra timewhen you need to Chason down a puck
that turns into a goal. SoI think this is an important week to
(53:34):
get that rest, important week towatch some tremendous college hockey matchups this weekend.
I know I'll be scoreboard watching andsending you updates every time of score
changes, but looking forward to that, and that was actually gonna be My
next question is, like we're keepingan eye on the teams in front of
Arizona State, right Coach Power said, really like nine on down through sixteen.
Arizona State is seventeen right now, what games should we all be keeping
(54:00):
NYE on this weekend to help thesun Devils output. We're doing a scoreboard
updates and here let's do it.So there are a ton of games that
are like top ten ranked teams pittedagainst each other. There are four of
those. B you at BC numberone against number two. That doesn't matter,
matter, it doesn't matter to us, but that's phenomenal hockey to watch
fan. The big ones are Denverat North Dakota, Okay for what,
(54:20):
number four against five, Wisconsin againstMichigan Michigan directly in front of it that
matter pairwise, that's huge, andthat's at Michigan yep, and then Minnesota
and Michigan State. But there area ton a ton of games that are
going to impact them. And toreference the teams that coach Powers is looking
at Minnesota, Western, Michigan,Providence, UMass, Saint Cloud, Michigan,
(54:42):
Cornell, and New Hampshire. We'rejust naming teams at this point,
but you need you need help, yeah, you need help. And and
look the NCC Tournament, Hockey EastTournament, you know ECAC in there as
well. Like those all matter aswe get down to you know, mid
to late March before the NC DoubleA Tournament. But this weekend will most
certainly have some somew at least whoknows I as who's back in the top
six. I might just have totweet out my list of twenty games that
(55:04):
we're watch. You could you atleast text him to me? So yeah,
yeah, all right, that'd begreat. All right, let's just
end. We only have like ninetyseconds here, but let's just end on
a cool night a note rather soawesome to see David Haimeovich crack the lineup
last Saturday. Hometown kid born andraised in Phoenix, played for the Junior
Coyotes. Such a positive dude.He had a few ships. I think
Power said it was four right. It was awesome for him to get a
(55:25):
rookie lap. That was really coolto watch. We tend to lose the
forest in the trees sometimes, butthis is a sport, right, This
is supposed to be fun, andthat was a fun moment for us.
I'm sure it's super special for himand his family. Yeah, And I
think it's an example of what CoachPowers wants to see more and more of
guys that grow up playing hockey here, playing hockey at the Mountain America Community
(55:47):
ice Plex and playing for the JuniorCoyotes, playing for this Junior Sun Devil
teams that I actually walked in ona practice a couple of days ago before
the basketball game and seeing them, you know, we're the Roon and Gold
at the youth level learning hockey andseeing more of those guys play for as
so cool. All Right, We'reoff this weekend, Devil's get some much
needed rest and recovery. We're backin action February second and third over at
(56:13):
Mullett Arena. Friday's game six thirty, pre game seven pm puck drop,
Saturday four thirty and a five pmpuck drop. Our thanks tonight to Greg
Powers, Matthew Copperude, and ourfantastic team behind the scenes led by Sean
Crestman. We'll see a Friday,February second, six thirty, ASU and
Lyndon would Until then, good night, everybody,
