Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Hell Frozen Over with Sun Devil head
hockey coach Greg Powers live from the new Vanetsia's Pizza
Presto at ASU Campus on Fox Sports nine to ten
and the Ihearts Radio App. Welcome to the course light
first period of Hell Frozen Over now alongside Coach Powers,
the voice of Sun Devil Hockey Tyler Peley, the.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
Sun Devil's picked up right where they left off before
their December break, and they're riding a program record seven
game winning streak back into conference play this weekend. As
we make our way through January, ASU has ten wins,
sits in third place in the NCCHC, and is getting
ready for one of its toughest tests yet against the
North Dakota Fighting Hawks. Hi, everybody, welcome into season three,
(00:45):
episode four of Hell Frozen Over Live tonight and all
season long from the new Venetzi's Pizza Presto on campus
at ASU for the next hour here on Fox Sports
nine ten and streaming on the iHeartRadio App. I'm Tyler Paley,
the play by play broadcaster of Sun Devil Hockey. Happy
to have you along as we discussed the team's latest news, notes,
and storylines. And joining me tonight is Arizona State head
(01:06):
coach Greg Powers and my broadcast partner Alex Coyle. Gentlemen,
welcome back. I know, coach you've been here all along.
But how was the holiday break?
Speaker 3 (01:15):
It was great? It was great.
Speaker 4 (01:16):
It was nice to have a break. We weren't accustomed
to having a break normally being an independent school, so
it was good that the guy's got to go home
and be with their families. And good that's the staff
got to spend time with ours.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
That was your break, sir. It was good.
Speaker 5 (01:29):
Got time in the sun, got to go to the
football game and in Atlanta. That was a blast, of course.
Good to see so many Sun Devil fans there as well.
Felt like the Sun Devil Convention out there.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
It's felt like an all season long really all right,
we do have a lot to catch up on. I mean,
it's been roughly a month since we last spoke on
this show, so we left off ahead of the Minnesota
du Luth series in early December. You guys swept the
Bulldogs in that series, two really gritty efforts, five to
three and then three to two in overtime. Five conference
points from those two games on that weekend. What are
(02:00):
your recollections from that series and how it brought you
to the point you're at right now.
Speaker 4 (02:05):
I think I think the biggest takeaway was I thought
the loot is much better than the record. I thought
they were really good, you know, and obviously didn't get
to start to the second half last week that they wanted,
but they had a couple guys at World Juniors, so
I think that they're going to have a pretty good
second half.
Speaker 3 (02:18):
I think they're a really good team.
Speaker 4 (02:20):
So those are two really hard fought wins against a
very good hockey team. And again, anytime you take five
or six points in this league on the weekend, I
think you take it no matter what the competition is.
Speaker 5 (02:30):
How much did those two wins, But also, really the
five game win streak that you guys ended the first
half on change the I guess morale in the lockero.
What did that do for the mentality because it was
pretty frustrating early on when you guys were playing so
well but couldn't find the results.
Speaker 4 (02:47):
Yeah, exactly, I mean, we loved how we play, We're
playing without without getting the results.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
We just had to stick with it.
Speaker 4 (02:53):
And and and obviously the guys couldn't lose belief in
each other and especially themselves, and they didn't. But I
think I think the vibe earned obviously at Denver, you know,
and and when you when you go in and you
you you not only you know, beat them on their
home ice, but sweep them on their home ice and
regulation both nights. There's nothing left. There's nothing you can't do.
(03:13):
There's nothing you can't do right, like you set a
standard for how you want to play, and and and
and the identity that you need to play with. And
that's exactly what we did. And and that's we've been
stressing ever since.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
So after Duluth, you guys have that long break you
you mentioned it. You didn't have this last year. You
played the weekend up in Lake Placid New Year's Weekend.
UH two years ago it was a bit shorter, similar
kind of like two and a half week break in play.
Do you think it's valuable overall to have this much
time off in the middle of the season.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
Yeah, I do.
Speaker 4 (03:43):
I mean, I think I think, you know, you can
look at it one of two ways, Like knocking the
rust off is tough for a lot of teams, and
and we were able to do it against really good
competition in the National Development program. So those are two,
you know, great exhibition games for us. There's going to
be years where they just don't fit, they don't make
sense based on when you play and what the break
looks like. Next year we don't have exhibition games. So
(04:07):
you know, you have to you have to you have
to practice the right way. That's why practice. You have
to emphasize how important important practicing is. And you know,
not every team gets a gets an exhibition game.
Speaker 3 (04:18):
Robert Morris didn't.
Speaker 4 (04:20):
North Dakota's had one exhibition game since they've been back.
We had two exhibition games in a tournament. So we're
four games in. Technically they're one game in.
Speaker 5 (04:30):
I think, though, I give your team a little bit
more credit to because they didn't even let that long
break become even a question on what whether that was going.
Speaker 2 (04:38):
To be a problem.
Speaker 5 (04:39):
What was there more responsibility with this group of being
sure that you know, you can go home and spend
such time with family, but the second you get.
Speaker 3 (04:47):
Back, it's back to work and back to the it's
a mindset.
Speaker 4 (04:50):
You know, we have a veteran group that have that
have been through you know a lot of guys that
have played a lot of college hockey, that have been
through breaks and understand what they need to do when
they come back and the mindset they need to have.
Speaker 3 (05:00):
And they were great. We had a really good week
of practice.
Speaker 4 (05:02):
And you learn as you go as a program what
to do when guys get back, what to focus on,
what the stress, what the practice, you know, all those things.
And I think that overall, you know, the staff did
a great job, the players did a great job.
Speaker 3 (05:15):
And and and here we are sitting in a really
good spot.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
Yeah, you mentioned it a moment ago. After the break,
you guys had an opportunity to play two exhibitions against
the US national team development program. I know that one
was less about the results, but ASU did win both.
First off, what is the value of scheduling that program
in particular, and at this point in the season.
Speaker 4 (05:36):
Well, the best eighteen year olds in the country, right,
And and exposing you know, those players to our campus
and and Mallo Arena and our fans and everything that
comes with playing at Arizona State, I think is a
good thing for us, you know. And and while most
of them are all committed that they know they're their
national team players and they talked to the kids on
(05:58):
the seventeen team, and they talked to friends, and so
it's a good thing for our program to get such
a high caliber opponent in here. And most importantly, it's
a really good competition. You know, they're very skilled. You
have to defend, you have to play the right way
because if you take a shift off against kids that talented,
even though they're younger, they'll make you pay. And so
it was a really good test for our guys and
(06:18):
they did well with him.
Speaker 2 (06:19):
Yeah, they were two tight games, particularly on Saturday night
when the US team made a little bit of a
comeback there at the end. You also got to see
future son devil Landon Halfley in action. He played left
wing on the top line both nights. He's draft eligible
next summer. I believe projected to be kind of a
first maybe second round pick. How do you think he
(06:39):
played at Mullet And did you get to meet up
with him at all and discuss kind of the future.
Speaker 4 (06:43):
Of Yeah, we sat down to talk quite a bit
and we're excited for him. He's going to be a
heck of a player. He skates world class, kind of
like the other kid that we'd brought in from that
program this year. He works hard, loves the ford check,
he's good off the pucks. So he'll be effective because
he compete and he skates, and he's he's already you know,
six foot one hundred and ninety pounds. I think we
(07:04):
can get him to one ninety five two hundred by
the time we play next year, and he'll be very
effective as a freshman.
Speaker 3 (07:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (07:11):
One thing I wasn't at the either of those games,
but what from a fan perspective that I heard was
number one, building was packed and absolutely electric, but also
the intensity of the games. They said it didn't feel
like it was exhibition, and they told me that it
was their favorite two games that they had attended of
(07:31):
ASU hockey. What about really the the event? I guess,
did you guys do well? And in terms of fan
support for being an exhibition game and having that, I was.
Speaker 3 (07:41):
Really happy with.
Speaker 4 (07:42):
I mean, one o'clock games on Saturday and a Sunday,
a lot going on holiday season exhibition games no students,
so the student section obviously was empty. But I was
really happy with our turnout and I thought our vans
were engaged in supportive and obviously supported half when he
was announced in the starting up. I thought that was
cool for him, but it was great, not a surprise
(08:04):
at all. I think that we've we've built a really
good fan base here, that that that enjoys coming and
watch sundble hockey no matter who the opponent is, and
that we can prove.
Speaker 2 (08:12):
It in terms of recruiting from that program. In particular,
we've seen you guys, you get guys from the National
Team Development program. I'm thinking of Kurt Guys, Ty Murchison, Gibson, Homer,
Colin Potter, to name a few. How does that program
factor into your recruiting efforts taking into account the us HL,
the CHL, International and elsewhere.
Speaker 4 (08:33):
I mean, I think that everybody wants players out of
that program. They they generally take the very best of
their age group in the United States. So when you
can get kids from that program, it's a huge coup
for you for our program. You know, Kruz Luci's played
for the program, Sean Dougie, James Sanchez, Gosh Minescalco.
Speaker 3 (08:51):
You know.
Speaker 4 (08:52):
So we've had quite a few, you know, and and
and really had a lot of success with all of them.
They're all we're really good Sun Devils that have been
here and the ones that are here are really huge
contributors as well.
Speaker 2 (09:03):
All right, moving on to this past weekend. Excuse me,
your team won the Desert Hockey Classic last weekend. Second
straight year, you guys won the whole thing, so a
massive congratulations to you. Let's go game by game. First
one was Robert Morris. ASU won seven to three in
a really dominant performance start to finish to advance to
the championship game. You told us, I'm thinking back to
(09:24):
like November, maybe even before that, in late October, when
you said, look, the offensive floodgates are going to open
sooner or later. You just have to wait for it.
And it felt like that one was was the pinnacle
of it.
Speaker 4 (09:35):
Yeah, I thought, I thought, obviously that was nice to see, right,
I mean, we we we put up seven goals and
it felt like we probably could have had a few more.
You know, had a first hat trick of the season
with Kirwin.
Speaker 3 (09:45):
It was great.
Speaker 4 (09:47):
Second hat trick game one, Shim had it. It's right,
Shim had a hat trick. That seems like an eternity ago.
Speaker 3 (09:54):
But yeah, so it was good. You know.
Speaker 4 (09:57):
I mean, my daughter lived with their head coach playing
for the Penn's Elite program for three years, so there
was a little you know, side bragging rights at stake
and our guys hopefully, you know, luckily our guys for
me took care of business.
Speaker 5 (10:11):
And then Game two against Cornell, it just seemed like
it was going to be such a close game coming
into it, knowing the recent history between the two and
really how good Cornell is. But really, on the ice,
the score obviously said it wasn't that close. What allowed
you guys to take it to Cornell the way? You
didn't really impose your will on the style of play?
Speaker 4 (10:30):
Yeah, I think, I mean, I think it was you know,
you could probably argue maybe it was a closer game
in the score. I thought, I thought Cornell played pretty well.
But really we executed exactly how you need to play
against them.
Speaker 3 (10:41):
You get out to a lead. They're very very hard to.
Speaker 4 (10:44):
Play when they when they build a lead on you
because of how stout they play, how structured they are,
how tough to generate on them. They are that they
are to generate on. And we got out to a leap.
You know, we need the jet. The Twins scored a
really good goal to get us up one nothing and
then you know Ryan's putting on net and good things
are happening and got us up to and we.
Speaker 3 (11:02):
Never looked back.
Speaker 4 (11:03):
And I think that, you know, against the team like that,
that's bigger and really stout, use our team speed to
our advantage, which we have a ton of, and we
did that. That was a huge emphasis, and we kept
building on the lead and never looked back and got
them to play really a style of hockey that they
don't want to play. They don't want to be down
three or four goals and chase a game that's not
when Cornell plays Cornell's brand of hockey, you know.
Speaker 3 (11:26):
So that was the key and we were able to
do it.
Speaker 2 (11:28):
Gibbie was awesome and also Silly got one his first
of the year. Finally. I'm sure that was a big
weight off his chest.
Speaker 4 (11:33):
And his monkeys off the back with Silly were happy
and hopefully that that parlays into a lot more for him.
Speaker 2 (11:38):
When you look at it from kind of a higher
vantage point. How special is it to not only defend
home ice, but also defend your title as Desert Hockey
Classic Champs, the tournament you guys host each year.
Speaker 4 (11:51):
Yeah, we really placed an emphasis last year on getting
that trophy and winning it for the first time. And
it was an unbelievable tournament. Beat Harvard, beat Omahan overtime,
the loudest I've ever heard of mullet when we did
beat Omaha last year. And and and our guys this
year did a great job.
Speaker 3 (12:07):
They genuinely wanted.
Speaker 4 (12:08):
To keep that trophy here and and uh and win
it again and win a trophy in front of our
fans because our fans deserve that, and it's a lot
of fun to do that. And they they they were
dominant this weekend. They they wanted it, and they took it.
Speaker 2 (12:20):
You guys got a little help not only with the
ceremonial puck drop, but also reading off the lines from
ASU football coach Kenny Dillingham, who was in attendance. He
took the game in from from a suite with his family.
We saw them on the video board a couple of times.
It feels like an obvious answer here, but just to
get you on the record, I suppose why did you
invite him to come out?
Speaker 4 (12:41):
I'm just to celebrate his season, you know, I think
it's important that we continue to tie these great moments together.
I know Graham does as well, and and Kenny and
I have become friends, and I wanted to make sure
that he understood how valuable, you know, when they have success,
how valuable it is to all of us, and how
it invigorates, you know, fans across the landscape of Sun
(13:05):
Devil sports, and when you can go to a hockey
game and get a stand innovation as a football coach.
I think that's a really good thing. And I think
he had a lot of fun and we're thrilled that
he did it.
Speaker 2 (13:14):
Yeah, he was pretty fired up there. I'll tell you
from our vantage point at least, well, it's been a
whole lot of winning lately for Sun Devil Hockey. The
path ahead will be a challenge. We'll talk about ASU's
upcoming series against North Dakota with Coach Powers in the
third period. Coach, we will chat with you shortly, sir,
up next. The Sun Devils have been great at spreading
the wealth on offense, but one man has separated himself
from the rest in the goal scoring department. Singer winger

You're listening to Hell Frozen Over with Sun devilhead Hockey
coach Greg Power. Let's start the Tobo Chico Heart Seltzer
second period on Fox Sports nine ten and the iHeartRadio

Speaker 2 (16:54):
For sticking with us. Second period of Hell Frozen Over.
It's our hour long show talking all things Sun Devil Hockey.
We're live every Tuesday before a home series this season.
From Vanetzi, It's Pizza Presto right on College app in Tempe.
So if you're not here tonight, consider joining us Tuesday,

(17:16):
it's been the year of the transfer for Arizona State.
You'll recall our three player guests this year of Ben
Noah beck Art, demsch Lane, and Luke Pavisic. And we're
continuing with that trend. It's only right that the Devil's
leading goal scorer, Ryan Kerwin is on health Frozen Over tonight,
coming off one of the best individual weekends we've seen
in some time. Ryan joins us now on health Frozen
(17:36):
Over to officially introduce himself to Sun Devil Nation. Appreciate
you being here tonight, sir, Yeah, of course, thanks for
having me. You're gonna get some of the best peats
in the world after this. All right, First things first,
let's start at the beginning. You transferred here from Penn
State in the offseason. I'm just curious, did you ever
play with Tyler Gratton? Yeah?
Speaker 11 (17:53):
Yeah, I played with Grats my freshman and sophomore year.
Speaker 2 (17:56):
So did he give you any guidance on coming here?
Did did that play a role in your decision or
not necessarily.
Speaker 16 (18:02):
Well, obviously I saw how well he did here. You know,
he was a leader on my team freshman and sophomore year.
So once I entered the portal and everything and he
figured out the as he was a school that I
was looking into, I kind of leaned on him, and
you know, he definitely helped me with the decision and
just told me how great of a place it is here.
Speaker 11 (18:20):
And said nothing but positive things.
Speaker 5 (18:22):
So well, when it came down to making a decision
on where you were going to play for this season, Uh,
what what about as U stood out? Why did you
end up picking a su and and a semester in?
Speaker 3 (18:34):
Now?
Speaker 2 (18:34):
What have the expectations lived up to?
Speaker 16 (18:36):
Yeah, I mean it's been It's been amazing. Everything I
could have wished for, and I mean even more so.
This is just a place where you know, I was
looking into, and the coaching staff is awesome. The guys
they had a great team last year, so just building
off of that and then the facilities, the weather, I.
Speaker 3 (18:53):
Mean, you just can't beat it.
Speaker 2 (18:54):
Right. How are the guys in the locker room? I mean,
are you like meshing well with them? It seems like
you guys have great chemists.
Speaker 11 (19:00):
Yeah, we have a great team.
Speaker 16 (19:01):
I think ever since I stepped foot on campus and
a bunch of transfers, I'm sure we could all say
the same thing. It's just it's been awesome. We're super
close like brothers, so yeah, it's been great.
Speaker 2 (19:11):
That's awesome. All right, let's uh, I'm sorry, you go.
Speaker 5 (19:13):
We've heard from all of the transfers this year. What
chat about the coaching staff is the reason why and
specifically the honesty that they brought in the transfer process.
Of course, you know this could be an obvious answer,
but why is that so important for a young kid
looking to find their next place to develop as a
hockey player and hopefully turn that into a professional career.
Speaker 16 (19:35):
Yeah, well I just think that you know, coach Coach
Powers is just super straight up front and honesus. So
I think that's something everybody's looking for once when chands
the portal. You don't want to go to a place
where your promise some things and it doesn't doesn't deliver.
But you know, it's it's been awesome.
Speaker 2 (19:50):
So I'm sure that gets around for future guys that
go in the portal too. Yeah, he's been pretty blunt
with us. I think, so, all right, let's let's get
to last weekend and you were on fire. I think
that's kind of fair to say hat trick against Robert Morris,
a goal and an assist against Cornell. I know there's
a lot of hard work going on behind the scenes, right,
(20:10):
but it seemed like last weekend was just kind of
your weekend and everything you did resulted in a positive
for your team. And I think that that goal on
Saturday against Cornell really exemplified that. You threw a shot
on net. I don't know if you were thinking, yeah,
this is going in, but you caught the goalie sleeping.
It just felt like it was a weekend that you
know it was meant to be.
Speaker 16 (20:30):
Yeah, I mean it was definitely things are going my way,
things are going in the team's way. So definitely really
nice to help help team. When it does Air Hockey
Classic and you're being.
Speaker 2 (20:38):
Too humble, this is where you're like dragging you say, yeah,
I'm on fire right here?
Speaker 11 (20:43):
Come on, dadn' got that? Ivy?
Speaker 2 (20:46):
How did you grow up? Like?
Speaker 5 (20:47):
What got you into hockey and what made you keep
going and ultimately lead you to college hockey?
Speaker 11 (20:53):
Yeah, my dad played hockey.
Speaker 16 (20:54):
My whole family did obviously, So my sister played and
my brother two brothers played, but my older Luke played
for the us NCVP and then he went to the
ohl QMJHL and then he ended up in Canadian college.
But yeah, he was definitely a huge role model for me.
Speaker 2 (21:11):
The team overall seven game winning streak right now that
ties a program record with a win on Friday against
North Dakota to a new program record. Streaks are nice,
but this one just feels different because of the kind
of slow start that we talked about with Coach Powers
in the first period. What's been working lately to not
only generate good play on the ice, but to get
(21:32):
wins at the end of the game.
Speaker 16 (21:34):
Yeah, I think, I mean, I've been saying this, but
I think we're just sticking to it, you know. I mean,
when we were we were playing the right way, we
weren't getting our wins. We could have just veered off
and tried our own thing. But I think the buy
in as a whole has just been awesome, and I
think that, you know, it's really helping show us that
when we stick to the coach's plans, you know it's
gonna work out.
Speaker 5 (21:53):
You've played with so many different guys in terms of
line matchups this season. Yeah, honestly, probably go through and
you've probably played on the line with every single forward, right.
What does and you've succeeded in pretty much every single
facet too? What does that say about you and your
ability to play with everybody, but also the skill overall
(22:13):
on this team?
Speaker 16 (22:14):
Yeah, I think as a player, you know, that's something
you want to emphasize on as you know, you want
to be some of that players want to play with
and you can fit into any.
Speaker 11 (22:22):
Role of the team.
Speaker 16 (22:23):
But I think that's also just it just shows how
skilled players we have and everybody works hard, everybody's super skilled,
and we're all positive. So I think that's something that
helps to just get adjusted to different guys. Quicker, How
fun is that to compete in practice with all that skill?
Speaker 11 (22:38):
Yeah, it's a lot of fun.
Speaker 16 (22:38):
It's it's crazy some of the things you'll see in practice.
It's I've never seen anything like it on any team
that I've been on before.
Speaker 2 (22:43):
You were with schlane and uh and small and last
weekend ra is hurt, so you got plugged into that
line those two specifically, I mean, clearly it went well, Like,
how is how is it playing with those two specifically?
Speaker 11 (22:58):
I loved it.
Speaker 16 (22:58):
Yeah, I think that she is such a good player
to a center, so smart sees the game so well.
And then Smally is the same way. But you know,
he works so hard, he gets in the corners, he
gets in the dirty areas, and yeah, I mean playing
with both of them was just super fun.
Speaker 5 (23:14):
That's awesome from a student athlete perspective. Of course, you
had time at Penn State, which a big athletic department
similar to to Arizona State. But the amount of success
that student athletes as a whole are having right now.
Football we're doing what they did volleyball winning a conference championship,
men's basketball and women's basketball serting to build on their
(23:35):
big twelve wins. Can you feel that around campus with
all the other student athletes, the success you guys have
had as well? Of course it does. Can you feel
that when when you see each other?
Speaker 16 (23:45):
Yeah, for sure, I feel like you can, especially the
football team with how good of a season they had
this year, and then hopefully us, you know, we want
to keep.
Speaker 3 (23:51):
Building off of it.
Speaker 16 (23:52):
But yeah, like you said, lots of lots of teams
are doing having great success within the organizations.
Speaker 11 (24:00):
Yeah, that's been great.
Speaker 2 (24:01):
I mean I remember Alex when we were at Denver.
I don't know if you were in our immediate area occurs,
but we were down I think we were interviewing Schlaner, right, oh, yeah,
and we were watching I had the game, the football game.
I think it was the b YU Yes had, And
this is when b Yu was driving. It chanced to
take the lead and we had to start the interview
or else we were gonna be late. And I should
(24:21):
have started the interview sooner because right when we started,
the internet started cheering. Yeah, likes over. Yeah, the whole
team is cheering anyway. Yeah, it's just it just feels
like everybody's so engaged. But the whole team was watching
that they were watching. Yeah, yeah, all right, I'd be
remiss if I didn't give you a chance to talk
about your goaltenders. Luke has been on fire sixth straight
(24:42):
as far as starts for him. Gibby pitches a shutout
against Cornell.
Speaker 12 (24:46):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (24:46):
I'd assume that you and your teammates can kind of
sleep a bit easier at night knowing you've got two
guys kind of a one two punch who you can
rely on between the pipes.
Speaker 11 (24:53):
For sure, Yeah, for sure.
Speaker 16 (24:54):
I mean they're both such such amazing goal siders, such
great people. But you know, for me, I've I've no
both of them since I was I know, I've known
past since.
Speaker 11 (25:02):
I was about twelve years old. Yeah, we played.
Speaker 16 (25:05):
Played against each other growing up, oh Man in the
New York States and all that stuff.
Speaker 2 (25:08):
But it's funny.
Speaker 16 (25:09):
Then when I moved to Michigan, I played with the
played against Gibbs. So not fun to play against either
of those guys.
Speaker 2 (25:14):
Yeah, now, I'm sure you're you're happy there on your
side of the house. Now, all right, we've got some
rapid fire questions. I've done this with a couple of
the guys on previous shows. I kind of get to
know you a little bit better, you ready, Yeah, all right?
Have you found a favorite spot on campus yet to study? Relax,
chill out, hang with friends, the rink, the rink? Okay,
all right, dogg or cat person?
Speaker 11 (25:35):
I've won of both sog.
Speaker 2 (25:36):
Okay, dog is the right answer. Introvert? Extrovert?
Speaker 11 (25:40):
Probably introvert.
Speaker 2 (25:41):
Really, we don't strike me as that, but okay, who
has the best nickname on the team.
Speaker 11 (25:45):
Oh Sam court Courtsey, Oh wow, why is there ay
to that? Or is I'm not safe for it's I
mean you don't want to run into him on the
ice because he's so thick.
Speaker 2 (25:59):
So it's funny. He had a goal this weekend as well.
All right, last one for you, Where does Mullet Arena
rank on the list of the many college hockey barns
you've visited and played out over the years.
Speaker 11 (26:09):
One, Yeah, no bias. That's so nice. That's it's unbelievable.
Speaker 2 (26:14):
It's better than.
Speaker 5 (26:16):
Yeah, for for those that haven't seen many other rinks
around college, what about Mullet makes it the best?
Speaker 11 (26:23):
Just the environment atmosphere is just incredible.
Speaker 16 (26:26):
You know, fans are really just like it's the whole
balls just on top of you.
Speaker 11 (26:29):
So that's awesome. And I can't beat the Colors.
Speaker 2 (26:35):
Yeah, all right. The personal let's see there, but any
any individual personal goals?
Speaker 16 (26:47):
Honestly, just doing anything to help a team win, fitting
up and down the lineup, doing whatever I can, so
just trying to help you guys.
Speaker 2 (26:54):
What from your perspective, what what is the team excelling
in right now the most? And where do you guys
need to focus on perhaps improving to kind of take
that next step and continue this winning streak.
Speaker 16 (27:06):
I think that something that we're excelling on a lot
is just our defensive zone. Yeah yeah, I mean plan
playing a good Cornell team was you know, we were superstructured,
didn't really give them a lot, I mean, and then
what we gave them give me amazing.
Speaker 3 (27:18):
See.
Speaker 16 (27:18):
So I think that's something that championship hockey teams do,
and you know, something we emphasize every day.
Speaker 2 (27:25):
What will it take? You got North Dakota coming in here.
I know you didn't play with him, but former Arizona
State goaltender TJ. Symptom Filter coming back to Tempe is
a good team. I mean, they're right above you guys
in the standings. Obviously college hockey blue blood. What is
it going to take to earn a couple more wins
this weekend?
Speaker 16 (27:41):
Just playing our game for sure, you know, not getting
intimidated by a team that comes in, but you know,
just respecting them, knowing how good of a program it is.
Speaker 11 (27:47):
But just playing our game. That's the biggest thing for
us all Right.
Speaker 2 (27:51):
Forward, Ryan Kerwin, our guest tonight, had been an offensive
machine lately, looks to add to his team leading eleven

out with us Coach Powers and our Sun Devil Hockey guests. Sir,
we just got done with Ryan Kerwin. What has he
meant to you? Went to transfer to your team this year?
Both on and off the ice.
Speaker 4 (32:03):
Yeah, he's He's a He's a long line of kids
that in today's landscape, you you you kick yourself because
you only get a year with them. Yeah, you know,
he's and it's not just because he's obviously a great player,
but he's just such a good kid. You know, he's
gravit you needed. Everybody gravitates towards him. He's a nice person.
He's made a huge impact as a veteran guy in
our room. Came highly recommended by another kid that's cut
(32:26):
from the same cloth, and Tyler Gratton that played with
them at Penn State. So we we're just embracing and
enjoying every day we have with them.
Speaker 2 (32:34):
He doesn't have any more eligibility.
Speaker 4 (32:36):
Huh, Well, who knows. Maybe if they add this fifth
year thing that they're talking about, I'll beg him to
come back.
Speaker 2 (32:41):
Fingers crossed. All right, I want to talk to you
about some kind of big picture items before diving into
the North Dakota Preview, if you don't mind. First, it
was announced a few weeks ago, really exciting as you
will host the annual Icebreaker tournament next season. Notre Dame,
Quinnipiac and Alaska Fairbanks will come to Tempe. Can you
just kind of give us some backstory, like how did
that opportunity come to life?
Speaker 3 (33:01):
It's tough to get that.
Speaker 4 (33:02):
You have to put in a bid a couple of
years in advance, right when Mullett opened. Frank Ferraro, when
he was here, we sat down and decided it was
gonna be a good thing to put in a bid
and no Oakview group. But who manages Mullet for us
helped a lot with that a process as well, and
we worked with College.
Speaker 3 (33:18):
Hockey, Inc.
Speaker 4 (33:19):
And we won the bid, So it's really exciting. They're
exempt games. They count in pairwise, they're full regular season games.
But what that means is that they don't count against
your thirty four game counts. So next year we'll get
thirty six regular season games and it's just two more
home games that our fans get to see.
Speaker 2 (33:35):
That's so cool. And the field is pretty dang good too.
Speaker 5 (33:38):
Look, Quinnipiac who has won the national championship recently, have
Notre Dame who has that tradition, and then you have
a team that with some history against it in Fairbanks,
so we know how much fight they put up, that's
for sure.
Speaker 2 (33:50):
No pun intended. I thought about that during the break.
Speaker 4 (33:53):
Sorry, yeah, and fun fact it was it was the
original field was supposed to be North Dakota.
Speaker 2 (33:57):
Oh wow.
Speaker 4 (33:58):
But obviously when we join in the NCCHC, this ho long.
We' knew, I mean, we're going to have this event.
When they joined the NCCHC, we decided that, you know,
obviously we're going to play each other a lot. So
they decided not to come. But we're happy that Fairbanks
is coming. They get a great program.
Speaker 2 (34:12):
How special of an event is that? Though? For hockey
fans that don't know exactly what it is, I.
Speaker 3 (34:17):
Think it's just it kicks off college hockey.
Speaker 4 (34:19):
You know, it's the ice breaker, breaks the ice on
the season, and you want to get as good of
a field as you can. Obviously, Quinnipiac just want to
recent national championship, Notre Dames.
Speaker 3 (34:29):
Notre Dame.
Speaker 4 (34:30):
They'll have a huge alumni base out here, and I
think they'll be excited to see the Irish out in Arizona.
And then Fairbanks is a historic program as well, so
it should be a great event.
Speaker 2 (34:40):
Three conferences, one independent, all represented. Really cool. Does this
mean that there won't be a Desert Hockey Classic next year?
Speaker 3 (34:48):
No, there will be. There will be.
Speaker 2 (34:50):
That's good.
Speaker 3 (34:51):
Yeah, okay, I will tell you who's in it though.
Speaker 2 (34:52):
All right, well, fair enough, Well we'll chit chat offline.
I guess okay. I want to ask you about some
Marie sent developing news today, some reports coming out and
you might be able to confirm yourself that former Sun
Devil Tim Lovell signed with a pro team in Finland.
Is this true, and if so, how excited are you
(35:12):
for him?
Speaker 4 (35:13):
It's true, and we're really happy for him. I know
he went over there with his youngest sister, Annabel, who's
on the U eighteen national team, So his whole family's
over in Finland where that tournament's taking place. And I
knew he was having conversations with that club that signed him,
and they're one of the elite clubs in the Finish League.
It's a really really high end league. I think it
fits his style of play. Well, it's a big, big
(35:35):
sheet ice and they're gonna appreciate how he plays.
Speaker 3 (35:38):
And we're excited for him.
Speaker 2 (35:39):
Yeah, we're excited to see all his highlights. Maybe we'll
have to book a trip out there or something else.
Speaker 5 (35:43):
I mean, yeah, well we'll have conversations about that, all right.
Speaker 2 (35:47):
I know how you feel about Alaska. Yeah, well that's Finland.
I would settle for all right. Some other kind of
news around the hockey world. There was a big moment
you tweeted about it in college hockey over the holidays,
Denver hosted a c h A club team U n
l V and u n LV won the game. I
My main takeaway was clearly Asu sweep of Denver in
(36:08):
November made some waves and kind of ruined them. But
but in all reality, you commented on this, uh, and
I want you to expand on your thoughts around kind
of the value of D one teams scheduling a c
h A teams to exhibitions.
Speaker 4 (36:21):
Let's I mean, I guess you know, first of all,
it was a shootout win. So in Denver's defense, as
a Denver fan fans, it's technically tied, but it was
absolutely a win. And and and and those kids had
a great moment, Those coaches had a great moment. No
one can or should ever try and take that from them,
because we've been in their shoes, you know. And and uh,
(36:42):
we did it and went to Penn State and and
beat them in regulation. And what it did for our
program and the attention that it drew. I don't think
that we're here today without that happening when we went
to Penn State. I really don't, because it just drew
so much attention to what we were doing and what
we were trying to build.
Speaker 3 (36:58):
And I know.
Speaker 4 (36:58):
That that that the guys up in Vegas want that
to do the same, and I think it's tremendous you know,
I think that you know, if if those two teams
played a thousand times, you're probably looking at nine hundred
and ninety nine go Denver's way by by a lot,
you know, And and and but that was the one night,
that was the one night that they they.
Speaker 3 (37:17):
Made it happen.
Speaker 4 (37:18):
And I'm so excited for him, and you know, I
tweeted out of congratulations. It is certainly not anything to
pile on Denver because at the end of the day,
the game really didn't mean anything to them, but it
meant something to you know, v you know, and and
and those guys deserve all.
Speaker 3 (37:31):
The credit in the world.
Speaker 4 (37:32):
And I I just hope that moments like those, and
programs like Denver and c C scheduling a C h
A teams leads to growth in our sport. We need
more teams, We need more A s us, We need
more un l vs and u c l A s
and and Colorado's and Utah's and we need more of
those schools, you know, adding Division one college hockey. And hey,
(37:54):
if if if in two or three or four five
years un LV ads Division one hockey, you're going to
look back on that moment, I think is the main catalysts.
Speaker 3 (38:02):
Why they do it.
Speaker 2 (38:03):
All because a s U beat Denver. It's the conclusion I.
Speaker 3 (38:06):
Draw another Hey, like Denver is not ruined trust me.
Speaker 4 (38:13):
Uh, They're still, in my opinion, the best team in
the contract, so there are.
Speaker 2 (38:18):
No boltim board material.
Speaker 5 (38:23):
Another interesting quirk about the college hockey schedule.
Speaker 2 (38:26):
At least David Carl, the head.
Speaker 5 (38:29):
Coach of Denver, coached the World Juniors team for the
last month and missed a couple of games, including the
U n LV game. Did you follow that team much
at all? How cool is it to see a conference
mate bench boss win that for for tm U s A.
And and have you been from from yes, any interest
from from you at coaching that someday?
Speaker 4 (38:49):
I mean, I would be honored. Right, you have to
be selected, and there's a long way to go for
for me to be selected. But everybody in college hockey
follows the World Juniors, you know, because it's it's most
comprised of mostly college you know, obviously coaches and collegiate athletes,
and they go and play the other best country you know,
in other countries, best.
Speaker 3 (39:07):
Players in the world and in their age group.
Speaker 4 (39:09):
And look at what the US is doing with college players,
So we all pull for the US in a big way.
Everybody watches that, everybody supports them. Is a lot of
camaraderie and college hockey built around the World Junior Tournament.
And and we're proud of those guys and happy for him.
And it was a great outing.
Speaker 2 (39:27):
How about that pass from from the seve up town.
I'll tell you a great Yeah, great co All right,
let's dive into the series ahead. Conference play resumes this weekend,
North Dakota fighting Hawks in town. Let's start by saying
that the rest of this segment shall not be used
to create any bulletin board material for the Hawks. But look,
(39:49):
they've been nearly as hot as a su lately. They've
won four straight five if you count the Manitoba Exhibition win. First,
let's let's start generally, what is your scouting report on
North Dakota.
Speaker 4 (40:00):
UH elite skill up front, they got a good solid
decorps obviously, we know what they have in net and
kJ and a great coach. You know, they're they're they're
well coached, They're they're one of the elite, blue blood
programs in college hockey. I think it's it's unbelievable that
we get to host them now almost every year, but
in our first year in the NCHD, toy'll be able
to host such a great program, is uh is great
(40:22):
for us, you know, and we're really looking forward to
the challenge. They're gonna come in here playing very well.
They get some some big guns back that they've had
out uh the injury, and and I know Cameron Berg
probably is going to be back their first line center.
That's a huge, huge addition for them because he's a
hell of a player. And they were six to one
on one in their last eight before the break, so
(40:43):
they ended on a really high note.
Speaker 3 (40:44):
They're a very very good team. I think they're a
team that you're.
Speaker 4 (40:48):
Only gonna see keep going like this as as the
season progresses here and we go down the home stretch,
that's usually what they do and uh, hopefully they just
don't do it this weekend.
Speaker 2 (40:57):
Yeah, let's hope.
Speaker 5 (40:58):
So we've Arizona has faced a couple of former Sun
Devils this season on the road at home. Tim Levell
came back as a member of the Wolverines. A goalie
comes back this weekend and TJ he had a really
good run here at ASU. What's it going to mean
to have him back, and what are you looking forward
to for the weekend against him?
Speaker 3 (41:18):
I think it'd be cool.
Speaker 4 (41:19):
I mean I think, I think you know, it's it's
been an interesting year.
Speaker 3 (41:22):
This is there.
Speaker 4 (41:23):
The first year we really played we played you know, obviously,
Timmy Lovell, We played Ryan O'Reilly against Providence.
Speaker 3 (41:30):
We played Matthew Romer against Northern Michigan.
Speaker 4 (41:33):
So it was a year that that we just played
a lot of guys that that decided to go and
look for something else. And it was a good experience
with the first three and I'm sure it'll be a
good experience at TJ. Like all those guys we pull for,
I pull for every weekend, I want them to be successful.
Certainly not this weekend. I will not be pulling for him.
But but he's a great kid. He did he did
(41:53):
some really good things here at ASU, some big moments,
you know, beaten Minnesota Mullet, beating North Dakota in Las Vegas.
You know, we won twenty four games with him and
Gibbe last year. So he was a good Sun devil
and we're looking forward to seeing him.
Speaker 2 (42:08):
Yeah, not much history between these two programs, but the
one game you mentioned it that you've played all time
was a classic. You won three to two in the
US Hockey Hall of Fame game in Vegas two years
ago in front of eighteen thousand North Dakota fans. You
were down to nothing in that game. Kind of felt
like I was starting to slip away, and then you
come back, you claw back two to one to two two,
and then ultimately win the game. How much do you
(42:30):
think back to that historic moment for this program.
Speaker 3 (42:33):
Yeah, it was.
Speaker 4 (42:34):
It was such a cool environment, right, I mean I
think that you know, that game in Vegas says everything
that needs to be said about how great of a
program they have and how great of a fan base
they have. I mean they travel everywhere. You're gonna see
that this weekend. There is going to be a lot
of green and tempee.
Speaker 3 (42:50):
And then I don't blame him. It's four degrees in
Grand for becus.
Speaker 4 (42:53):
I wouldn't want to stay there either, So you know
it's gonna be it's gonna be fun. But that that
was a great event up there, and they act almost
eighteen thousand fans in T mobile and it was a
great win for US.
Speaker 5 (43:04):
You mentioned the fans support. Of course, I can't explain
how excited I am for this weekend. It's been been
building for a couple Like, there were random places, you know,
I live in Memphis in the summer and I was
at a restaurant. A guy that sat next to me
a North Dakota fan. Of course, so we're having banter
back and forth about it. But the importance though for
(43:24):
ASU fans that have tickets to this game or season
ticket holders to either go to the game or give
those tickets to ASU fans. What is the importance of
that this weekend.
Speaker 4 (43:34):
Well, obviously I'm biased, and I'm going to say I
would prefer for them not to sell their tickets to
North Dakota fans. Yeah, I also understand the pricing on
the secondary market is very high, and some people are
going to do what they need to do, you know,
and then then and pay for half their season by
by giving up a weekend. And I get that, and
it's on us to continue to build our program so
(43:54):
our season ticket holders don't do that, you know. I
think we were on the path doing that where it
wouldn't even be an option. And I know for a fact,
and there's people here tonight that would never dream of
selling your tickets to an opposing team. So we're going
in that direction and people forget you know, we're in
our third year in a real facility, so we're building
(44:15):
that loyalty every day and I think it's something we
continue to try and do.
Speaker 5 (44:19):
How exciting though, is it to know that your program
is at this point to where you know, the prices
are that high to come see you against one of
the boot boards.
Speaker 3 (44:27):
Yeah, I mean it's really cool, you know.
Speaker 4 (44:29):
I mean it's I mean, it's going to be a
raucous environment, you know, both ways, you know, and the
students aren't fully back, but hopefully the students, you know,
we find a way to get a thousand students in there,
even though classes don't start till next week. But so
I'm excited now. Our guys are really excited. It's gonna
be a fun weekend.
Speaker 2 (44:49):
A couple minutes left here, did want to get an
injury update from you. I know, we're kind of like
teetering on the edge of the return of Cruz Lucius.
Ryan Alexander was out last weekend and any other updates
you can give us here.
Speaker 4 (45:02):
Yeah, we're we're very confident, fairly like could say very
confident that Crews should play this weekend, so we're excited
about his debut. I think that people need to keep
their expectations in check. He's a great player, you know,
and and will he be at his peak right away
against a good team, Probably not, but he'll be effective,
he'll make a positive impact on the game, and we
(45:24):
can't wait to see fifty one in a sun Devil Jersey.
Ryan Alexander is probably out another week. I don't think
we're gonna have him, and we're also not going to
have the Jackson twins, so they're also out this weekend.
So it's been one of those years where we haven't
been able to put a fully health up line a
healthy lineup together at any point in the season. It
(45:44):
won't be that way for us this weekend. We haven't
used it as an excuse. We believe we have everything
we need to go out and have success, just like we.
Speaker 3 (45:51):
Have over the last month.
Speaker 4 (45:53):
And hopefully we get through this weekend, you know, unscate
knock on wood, and then for the rest of the year,
you know, we'll get we'll get the Jackson's back. Very
likely for Saint Cloud, I think so, and and Ryan
Alexander as well, and and uh, that's why you build depth.
That's why you build depth. We have everything we need
to go out and have success.
Speaker 2 (46:11):
Fingers crossed. We're so close, so close. All right, we'll
leave you with this question. You have a chance to
set a new program record with eight straight wins if
you knock off North Dakota on Friday nationally televised game. Unfortunately,
alex and I didn't make the cut for that. But
that's what's it gonna take to get the job done
and knock off the fighting hall.
Speaker 4 (46:30):
Well, just again, we set a standard, we set our
identity that that we were striving to set at Denver,
and it's it's it's every day holding ourselves accountable to
that standard and that identity.
Speaker 3 (46:41):
So we're focused on that.
Speaker 4 (46:42):
Hunting pucks and and and second and third efforts and
get into the net and defending with with relentless vigor.
Speaker 3 (46:49):
And if we do those things, we like our chances.
Speaker 4 (46:52):
And it's not a North Dakota uh thing, it's it's
it's anybody we play thing we think that we have
that that inner belief that that you know, we put
on the lineup sheet.
Speaker 3 (47:03):
If we play that way, we will have success all right.
Speaker 2 (47:05):

who's chomping away at his petty bony slice. Nice. It
looks good. I hope it doesn't taste very good. Yeah,
first off, happy twenty twenty five. Man, we've made it.
(51:03):
We've made it. I hope you enjoyed some time with
your your family, friends back home. It feels good to
be back in the swing of things, doesn't it all?
Speaker 5 (51:10):
It does, especially winning that's a lot of course, and
getting to see good hockey with no rust, no layoff.
Speaker 2 (51:16):
Yeah. I want to start with something and this is
kind of calling you out, but not really. We discussed
this two shows ago. It was my concern meter, right,
we talked about at that point, Asu was three six
and one on the year. I said, I was kind
of at a three on the scale of one to ten.
Now Asu ten seven and one on a seven game
winning streak. It's it's just wild to me to see
(51:38):
how things can change in the matter of a month
and a half.
Speaker 5 (51:41):
Yeah, and again I think I said what I said, okay,
And I think my reasoning behind it was, you know,
they were playing so well and we hadn't seen that result.
Now we're finally seeing the result. They're getting the result.
They're playing well, massive resume wins. You built that foundation
in the pairwise that we were worried about at the time.
That's been a really good development. And getting some of
(52:03):
the hurt guys. Unfortunately you're gonna miss the Jackson Twins
this weekend, but hopefully getting Cruise back adds to that
and adds to that angle. But hey, I guess reverse psychology,
I'm at a seven on the concern meter now.
Speaker 2 (52:15):
I guess if that's how you do yeah, if that's
how you do it. Yeah, So all right, Well I'm
kinda I don't know. I guess I'll be at like
a one.
Speaker 5 (52:24):
It's it's a great time to be to be around
this program, covering the program, and it again sets up
for a tremendous entertaining matchup against North Dakota because it's
basically two teams right now. I'm not gonna say programs
with two teams within the season that are at the
exact same point. Yeah, slower starts very similar records, almost
(52:45):
identical spots in the pair wise, very similar spots in
the NCHC standings, battling it out in the middle of
the season, right and you can ask, cannot ask for
a better situation against them.
Speaker 2 (52:55):
I mean, number fourteen versus number sixteen in Tempe two
games weekend of January. It's like, I mean, because why
you play, That's why you joined this conference. Ryan Kerwin,
we had him on earlier on an absolute tear five
point weekend, including the hat trick on Friday, leads the
team in goals, can kind of plug and play everywhere.
And what I think is most promising to me, he said,
(53:18):
he's scoring in different ways. I mean, down low, he'll
take a risk or and just throw it in like
we saw somebody's calf off somebody's calf, like I mean,
it's it's just so promising to see the puck getting
into the back of the neck.
Speaker 5 (53:29):
Yeah, And that's what Coach Powers mentioned when they got
him from Penn Sailor. This guy could be one of
our best guys, if not the best player on the
ice for us. And what is immediately jumps from him
when you watch him at practice, when you see him around,
is he's always has the smile on his face. He's
always giddy, he's always happy, and that really feeds in
the room, right, guys feed off of that. The group
(53:52):
of guys that they got in the transfer portal and
added to this mix, got a couple of tremendous leaders
that are you know, they're the same every single day.
And then you also have guys that are just so
happy to be there, be around and play hockey with
so much talent and that's why that the confidence never
wavered when they were not getting the results that they
probably should have with how well they were playing early.
Speaker 2 (54:13):
In the season. Well, and that theme kind of fits
another guy individually, and that's Lucas Cillinger presenting his first goal.
I mean, he had tennis cists coming into Saturday's game
against Cornell and he you know, he had been productive
in his own way, but we're so used to seeing
him put up what twenty goals, and he just hadn't
had one until Saturday.
Speaker 5 (54:32):
And that line really, right, Jackson twins with him, that
was arguably the best line, most impactful line last year.
And we were saying, and I'm not sure if we
mentioned it on air or not, but you know, of
course coach Bouers didn't like to talk about line one, two, three,
but they were listed as line three both games last weekend, right,
and if you would have told us that, you know,
that's a really good sign for what the top six
(54:53):
guys have done and what they brought so to get
him and allow him to play be listed line three
and make an impact some good number of assists this year,
but finally get that goal. He could feel some weight
jump off his shoulder.
Speaker 2 (55:07):
Fingers crossed. Everybody's healthy for Saint c Yeah for sure.
All right, we only have about a minute left here,
but let's chat for a moment about this weekend, specifically
North Dakota. Your favorite team of all time is in town.
TJ returns places sold out both nights. What kind of
series are you expecting.
Speaker 5 (55:22):
I'm going to do a lot of pacing deep well, yes,
that's I'm excited for it. Really really me too, truly excited.
That was the one series I circled when the calendar
came out. I'm happy that they're coming to us first
in playing each other as a conference opponent. It's just
going to be a tremendous event for college hockey two.
(55:43):
I think the ticket prices show that on the second
FLD market. Of course, it's gonna be great national TV
game on the Friday, then local TV with with you
and myself the next day, and I think it's just
gonna be awesome to watch the blue Blood come to Tempee.
Speaker 2 (55:58):
All right, six points.
Speaker 3 (55:59):
I'll on the line this weekend.
