Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Hell Frozen Over with Sun Devil head
hockey coach Greg Powers live from the new Vanetsia's Pizza
Presto at ASU Campus on Fox Sports nine ten and
the iHeartRadio lot. Welcome to the course light first period
of Hell Frozen Over now alongside Coach Powers, the voice

(00:21):
of Sun Devil Hockey Tyler Paley on this Tuesday night.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
The state of Sun Devil Hockey remains strong.

Speaker 3 (00:27):
Since we last spoke, the Devils have won three out
of four, including a sweep on the road. They control
their own destiny in terms of hosting a conference playoff series,
but with eight games to go, their aspirations are much
higher than that. Hi, everybody, Welcome into season three, episode
six of Hell Frozen Over live tonight and all season
long from the new Vanetsi's Pizza Presto on campus at

(00:48):
ASU Here for the next hour on Fox Sports nine
ten and streaming on the iHeartRadio app. I'm Tyler Paley,
the play by play broadcaster of Sun Devil Hockey. Happy
to have you along as we discuss the team's latest news, notes,
and storylines. And joining me tonight is Arizona State head
coach Greg Powers. And my broadcast partner Alex Coyle. Alex,

(01:08):
you weren't on our flight, but Coach felt like that
plane ride back to Tempe from Oxford much more pleasant
this time than it was about a year and a
half ago.

Speaker 4 (01:16):
Yeah, it was. It was. It was a great trip.

Speaker 5 (01:19):
Really really proud of our guys for going and getting
two big wins that we absolutely had to get and
they left no doubt.

Speaker 3 (01:26):
Yeah, we're gonna talk more about that series coming up
in a moment. We do have a lot to catch
up on. We left off ahead of the Colorado College Series,
which started super well.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
In game one.

Speaker 3 (01:36):
You called it and this is I think my favorite
Greg Powers is at this point a complete dissection. Can
you kind of explain what that excellent phrase means and
how your team found a way to win.

Speaker 5 (01:48):
I think it was just it was a first period
where there wasn't really much given up either way.

Speaker 4 (01:53):
They did a really good.

Speaker 5 (01:54):
Job slowing us down, you know, and preventing us from
generating very much. And when that happens, and your talented
team like we are, and your scoring goals like we
have been, it's easy to get away from what works.

Speaker 4 (02:06):
And and and and.

Speaker 5 (02:07):
Cheat the game a little bit right, Uh, And our
guys didn't do that. It was just a mature kind
of like I said, dissection where we we just were
patient and waited for our opportunity to you know, you know,
get ours and and we did and had a big
three goal second period and and and never looked back.

Speaker 6 (02:24):
It feels like a big aspect of that idea is
for checking, right. And of course we'll get into Saturday
when we get there. But uh, that was something that
you said you wanted to see more of from your team,
especially this weekend, this past weekend at Omaha.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
What did you see from that group?

Speaker 6 (02:39):
And overall how important is that to the game of
hockey and and to your identity?

Speaker 5 (02:44):
Yeah, I mean it's huge, right, And and you have
to be willing to give the puck up sometimes and
and put it in spaces where you know you can
get it back, you know. And and we obviously were
a possession team. We like to create off the rush.
We're dangerous off the rush. Teams know that, right, So
they're gonna have good gaps, are gonna have heavy back pressure,
they're going to try and clog up neutral ice on us.
And when they do those things which most likely every

(03:07):
team is going to do against us to try and
slow us down.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
A little bit.

Speaker 5 (03:10):
You got to be able to put pucks in behind him,
and everybody's going to buy into that. So we're managing
the game and managing pucks and and then obviously you
got to you gotta put it in areas where you
know you get it back, and that's before checking is
and I thought we did a good job of that
this weekend at Miami.

Speaker 3 (03:25):
We should note that that game one, you guys scored
four times. Like Caden Americo, he actually ended up being
called in the third period in to make way for
Carson Musser. Game two against Colorado College kind of looked
like we were headed for another sweep. You were up
to nothing, then up for one, but it kind of
all took a turn for the worst in the third

(03:46):
period when CC rattled off four unanswered to win the
game five to four in regulation. What happened in that one,
I don't want to talk about.

Speaker 5 (03:54):
Okay, you know it was. It was one of those
weird things which just unraveled on us, and it didn't
feel like we really deserve to be up for one,
to be honest, and and our guys played like it,
you know, instead of embracing, you know, or just really saying.

Speaker 4 (04:10):
Hey, it doesn't matter, we're up for one.

Speaker 5 (04:12):
We got to close this thing out and manage pucks
and and be a little bit urgent and desperate and
kill plays.

Speaker 4 (04:18):
We did the exact opposite. We looked like a team
that took winning for granted.

Speaker 5 (04:23):
And and I still say, if we would have gotten through,
you know, two shifts after the fourth goal, the game's over, yeah,
you know, but not only do not get through one,
they scored eight seconds later, right, and so that gave
them life.

Speaker 4 (04:35):
They knew they were in it.

Speaker 5 (04:36):
And from the net out we just looked discombobulated and
uneasy and and and you know, I challenged the fourth goal,
really not because I thought we were going to win
the challenge, but to get a longer time out and
and and it didn't work. Obviously, it's on me for
not being able to pull our guys out of it.

(04:56):
And I always take more accountability than anybody when stuff
like that happened. We wear it. We wear our hearts
art sleeve. We hate losing a home. We really really
despise losing in that fashion in front of our fans.
To pay money to see us play and spend their
Saturday nights with us to see us. You know, really
just just going to the tank those last fourteen minutes.

(05:18):
It was tough to swallow, and we all really owned
it and had a great week of practice and obviously
bounce back.

Speaker 6 (05:23):
Yeah, it got the sense of because of those fourteen
minutes or so that this week was one of the
more intense weeks of practice in terms of focusing on
the little things and attention to detail, and it felt
like you were you gave your team some tough love
all week. From the coaching side of things, how what
do you look for in a team to be like, Okay,
this is a group that I can be really harsh

(05:44):
on and really give them the tough level, Or this
is a group where I gotta, you know, not coddle them,
but lift them up in times of down.

Speaker 5 (05:50):
Yeah, I mean I think I think there's times where
you need to be hard on guys and obviously times
you need to support them. You always try to pick
those spots, and sure it's never perfect and you're never
you know, batting a thousand as a coach, But I
think last week was a really great opportunity you know,
as a coaching staff, for us to get our guys attention,
you know, and really make them understand winning's hard.

Speaker 4 (06:11):
You can't take winning for granted.

Speaker 5 (06:13):
It's hard to go thirteen and two in fifteen games,
you know, And for fourteen minutes, we just looked like
a team that took winning for granted and forgot how
hard we had to work to put us in the
position that we're in today. And sometimes it's all you
can do in those moments is spin spin it all
into a positive and try to be working into a

(06:35):
positive and make sure that that doesn't allow the train
to go off the tracks. And that's exactly what we did.
And and credit to our players, they responded in a big,
big way and again left zero doubt at Miami.

Speaker 3 (06:47):
You know, on a similar note to that, how do
you like, what's your philosophy around balancing playing with confidence
and swagger with preventing that complacency and taking winning for granted, Like,
how do you strike that bounance?

Speaker 5 (07:00):
Well, it's just it's you know, like I think it's
you know, we've lost two in these fifteen and they
both sting right. One was a late goal against against
North Dakota lost and overtime and a four to one
lead that we coughed up. And I think the message
is simple, like like, hey, we're really good. Yeah, you know,
and and we're gonna have leads. And I said to

(07:21):
the guys, we have ten games left. I think we're
probably gonna have leads and the majority of those games
because I believe in what we have and we have
to embrace not letting our foot off the gas and
going out and playing to win until the clocks hit zero,
not going out and just waiting for the clocks to
hit zero. There's a difference. So again, they know it,

(07:43):
they've done it. They've done it really well in big
moments against North Dakota on Friday night, at Saint Cloud
on Friday night, you know, up at Denver both nights.
So this team has it in them. And then then
in Miami, obviously we built leads and never looked back.
And they didn't let off the gas at any point
during the weekend, and I don't think they will the
rest of the season.

Speaker 6 (08:04):
How much of your I guess you call them off
season acquisitions, both in the transfer portal and the veteran
guys you got there, but also coach Corbett and leading
to a level headed room that can go through the
ups and downs of the season and feel like the
same person every day.

Speaker 5 (08:20):
Yeah, I mean, obviously, all of our new players this
year have been just incredible. Yeah, you know, from the
transfers to the freshman you know, across the board, huge
impact guys. You know, the three freshmen d have been great.
They get better and better every weekend and they're a
huge piece of our are now and even bigger piece
of our future. Obviously, the kids sitting across from us

(08:43):
is a special player and we're missed him. That's a big,
big loss against CC that not a lot of people
talked about. But when you lose that speed, and you
lose that player that drives to play every shift and
applies pressure to whether we have the puck or not,
you feel you feel it and we felt it in
a big way. So it was nice to get him back.
And the transfers have been obviously incredible. I mean you

(09:03):
look at it, you know, we we we hit it
out of the park with all of them, from pav
to obviously Ryan Kerwin and Schlanner and Noah Beck and
you know, I mean it's it's been outrageous how good
they've been for us, and you know, to Lucius and Shimmick,
obviously it's it's it's it's a it's a big part
of our our team and and there are a big,

(09:25):
big reason why we are where we are.

Speaker 3 (09:27):
Yeah, kudos to you guys for your continued success in
the transfer portal. All right after the SEC series, bounce
back time for a SU and Oxford Ohio against last
place Miami. It's a team that hadn't won a conference
game all year, still hasn't. In fact, before we talk
about the result, it was supposed to be the first
game in which all of your guys were healthy, and

(09:48):
that was the case until about an hour before game time.
Can you walk us through what happened to Benji Eckerley
and his status right now?

Speaker 2 (09:55):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (09:55):
Yeah, it was really just a freak accident during the
same dynamic warm up that benj he's done for five years.
You know, he jumped and sprinted and we actually have
it on film and it's it's hard to watch, but
and he bursted his achilles. It was just a freak accident.
Those things happen, you see, it happen in football and
in basketball and and and it's a major, major injury, right,

(10:18):
and he had a really successful surgery this.

Speaker 4 (10:20):
Morning, which we're happy about.

Speaker 5 (10:22):
Unfortunately, his playing career here is over, and it doesn't
mean his impact here won't be felt moving forward. He
has the most positive outlook on this situation than anybody.

Speaker 4 (10:34):
Right. It's breaks my heart, it breaks everybody's heart to not.

Speaker 5 (10:38):
Have him because he's such a big piece of what
we do and how we do it. His leadership, his tenacity,
his skating, his ability to get on ford check is
really where he's good. He's our best penalty killer, you know.
And the first thing he said to me when I
went into the training room Friday was, hey, we almost
we were an hour away.

Speaker 2 (10:56):
We were an hour.

Speaker 5 (10:57):
Away from getting to a game where we had our
projected top lineup all intact, and it just didn't happen.
And that's been this season, right, whether it was CC
we expected to have it and Pazzi, you know, got
an illness and was out, whether it's at Miami and
we put a lineup chart out with our our our
you know, projected top lineup and that happened to Benji,

(11:17):
it's been a season that that's I think the story
that that that that could be told is is how
resilient these kids have been and with the next man
up mentality, whether it's Kyle Smollen played a first line center,
fourth line center, you know, left wing, right wing, whether
it's Cold Gordon, you know, thinking he's not going to
play on Friday and getting rutched the rink and putting

(11:37):
his stuff on and then going out and getting our
first goal. For us, it's it's next man up, and
that's the way it's got to be the rest of
the way.

Speaker 3 (11:45):
As for the game itself, we kind of talked about
this in our post game show, like you guys got
better with with each period on the way to that
seven to one win.

Speaker 2 (11:55):
Biggest takeaways from the series opener.

Speaker 5 (11:57):
Yeah, I think I think we just kind of felp
each other out the first ten minutes, and once our
guys really settled in and found their game, there was
no looking back, and that they understood that under our
guys understood we didn't have any choice but to go
and get two regulation wins. They're in real rebuild mode.
I have a ton of respect for Anthony. I'm good

(12:18):
friends with them. He's going to get that going quickly.
But it is what it is right now out there,
and you know where they are in the pair wise,
you can't afford to slip up against them and our
guys again, they didn't. They didn't even leave a shred
of doubt, which was great to see.

Speaker 6 (12:34):
Yeah, a big part of that was special teams. He
had two goals for power play, but also two goals
from the penalty kill, and the penalty kill has gotten
shorties in bunches at times of this season. You think
back to the three they got in the first game
of the season as well. How much of that is structure,
how much of that is a good puck luck at times?
And then how much of it, though, is just guys
like r Tim Schlander, Ben and Chimmick just making a punt.

Speaker 5 (12:56):
Dana does a great job obviously with the kill and
it's gotten better and better as we've gone on. But
it's it's just having good players, right, you know, And
and it's the same with our power play.

Speaker 4 (13:04):
It's the same.

Speaker 5 (13:05):
You know, credit goes to the players that you know,
they do a good job applying pressure when they need
to force another team to to cough it up. And
then when you have guys like Shim and Schlaner who
can make plays on your kill. You get seven shorthanded
goals in a season, which is what we have.

Speaker 4 (13:20):
So it's it's all.

Speaker 5 (13:22):
The players and and Dana is obviously doing an incredible
job getting him ready for it.

Speaker 3 (13:25):
Speaking of our tem Schlane took about five minutes into
game two for a scary situation to do to develop
with him getting hit, slammed into the boards, went to
the hospital, but he did go back to the hotel
after being evaluated. What's already status right now and and
perhaps his status for this week?

Speaker 5 (13:44):
Yeah, his his his obviously getting carried off in a
stretcher was was scary, right, and it's hard for for
his teammate to see that and then be able to
refocus the way they did, which you know, I said
this to them after the game. The resiliency and and
and in facing moreversity than people actually thought. To see
your heart and soul guy got go down Friday, come

(14:05):
out win seven to one. Then see another heart and
soul guy that's maybe been the best player in college
hockey in January, go down and then boom score two
goals right after he gets stretchered off. They played for
those guys rallied around him. It was great to see
Artie will be okay. It was precautionary more than anything.
There's there's been progress throughout the week where we're hopeful

(14:28):
he can play Friday. I would say, right now, it's fifty.

Speaker 3 (14:31):
To fifty okay, amazing griss cross for him, but of
course one, what's what's best for him and his health.
Does it sting at all to not be able to
close that one with a shutout? I mean, I mean,
oh yeah, I mean I was a goalie. It was
a bad goalie, but I was a goalie.

Speaker 4 (14:45):
So anytime you can get a.

Speaker 5 (14:47):
Shutout, you you want one. I felt for Path more
than anything. But I think on the bench we were
really saying, hey, let's let's keep him under ten shots. Yeah,
the first time in program history would have been keeping
an opponent to single digit shots too, and so that
was what we wanted. And Schmags blocked a big one
in the last two minutes. I think r A blocked
one or maybe Chucky blocked one with about thirty seconds left,

(15:09):
and then they got the tenth and banged home or rebound.

Speaker 4 (15:11):
It is what it is. We move on.

Speaker 2 (15:13):
Yeah, eleven shots in total.

Speaker 3 (15:14):
All right, coach, before we head to break, the race
for the Penrose Cup is tight, but you guys remained
in prime position to host a first round series. The
road ahead is obviously really difficult, arguably the most difficult
in the conference. What's your assessment of where things stand
right now?

Speaker 5 (15:32):
Look, hey, we had eight games left, and we're a
dog fight to win a league, you know, And I
think if anyone would have presented us with, hey, you're
gonna be you know, thirteen to two in your fifteen
games since he played Denver, you got eight games left
half for a home against teams really high up in
the pair. Wise, We're looking at all as opportunity, you know,

(15:53):
and we're going to embrace the opportunity and have fun
with it. We've worked really hard to get here. This
team has worked really hard to get us in this position.
So we're gonna make sure we enjoy it and leave
everything on the ice and see what happens.

Speaker 3 (16:07):
Yeah, it's been a lot of fun so far, and
we are certainly in for a wild ride down the stretch.
A month ago in the regular season, next up is Denver,
which we'll discuss in the third period.

Speaker 2 (16:16):
Coach we'll chat with you shortly to preview the pios.

You're listening to Hell Frozen Over with Sun Devil head
hockey coach Greg Power. Let's start the Tobo Chico hard
Seltzer second period on Fox Sports nine to ten and
the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 3 (19:44):
Thanks for sticking with us second period of Hell Frozen Over.
It's our hour long show talking all things Sun Devil Hockey.
We're live every Tuesday before a home series this season
from Vanezia's Pizza Presto on College av in Tempe. So
if you're not here tonight, consider joining us Tuesday, February
eighteenth at six pm ahead of the Western Michigan series.
You can come, grab some delicious food and talk college

(20:07):
hockey with us. Over the years, ASU has had some
incredibly skilled players come through its doors, but perhaps nobody
with higher potential than freshman Colin Potter. We're always on
the edge of our seats when he has the puck
on his stick and you truly can't blink because of
how quick he is on the ice. And Colin joins
us now on Hell Frozen Over. Great to see you,
Thanks so much for being here to me.

Speaker 16 (20:26):
Yeah, thank you guys for having me.

Speaker 3 (20:28):
Your team has done a whole lot of winning lately.
How is that locker room feeling right now?

Speaker 16 (20:33):
Pretty good?

Speaker 17 (20:33):
I mean a lot of the guys are having a
lot of success, so it's easy to feel good about
yourself and you know, just hope to keep continue winning.

Speaker 6 (20:41):
And the mix in that locker room has a good
balance between young guys talent like yourself and the three
freshman defenseman, but also veteran guys that he have either
been here a long time or played at big time
levels in college hockey. How much had those veterans helped
you guys.

Speaker 17 (20:55):
The freshman I think they just help a ton obviously,
like Ardamschlane and Benji. Uh feel bad he got hurt,
but I mean they just have taught me so much,
just you know, training off the ice to you know,
staying happy on the ice. And things aren't going too great,
so I definitely want to be in the same place
without him.

Speaker 3 (21:14):
Since a lot of guys have returned from injury, your
line with Cruz Lucius and Bennett Shimmick has kind of
been solidified. How do you enjoy playing with those two guys?

Speaker 16 (21:25):
Yeah, I love playing with them.

Speaker 17 (21:26):
H They moved the pluck so well, like uh, like
my goal last Friday, you know, put it between his
legs and it's It's just a lot of fun playing
with those guys. And you know, I don't uh, I
can't complain at all about it.

Speaker 3 (21:39):
Yeah, they're they're too talented, talented hockey players. I'm curious
because I know you're kind of like a workhorse, and
we know that you love to hit the ice, perhaps
even on on off days, and perhaps even more than
anybody else on the roster. What about playing hockey, practicing, skating,
kind of all of it.

Speaker 2 (21:58):
Do you enjoy so much?

Speaker 3 (21:59):
Or maybe is it less about enjoyment and more about
just getting better each day.

Speaker 17 (22:04):
I think it all comes from just enjoying the game,
just growing up, going to like outdoor parks, skating on
the outdoor ice and stuff like that. You just it's
something you can't exactly explain. It's just you love the game.
You want to get better too, So I think it's
a little both. But I'd say I just enjoy the
game so much so I always want to be out there.

Speaker 3 (22:23):
We interviewed your mom earlier in the season when Duluth
was in town, and now you get to return to
her place where she played college hockey in a couple
of weeks.

Speaker 16 (22:33):
How exciting will that be for It'll be pretty fun.

Speaker 17 (22:35):
I've been there a bunch of times, so amaz Oil's
is a pretty cool place to play, so I'm really
excited for it.

Speaker 6 (22:42):
That's pretty cool. We see your parents pretty much at
every series. How much has their support meant to you
and where do you lean on, especially your mom at
the levels she played with getting through the ebbs and
flows of the season.

Speaker 17 (22:55):
I mean, obviously, it's like they're so supportive. They're always
there for me, so there's always someone to lean on.
And obviously I got all my teammates to lean on.

Speaker 16 (23:02):
Too, So.

Speaker 17 (23:04):
Yeah, it's so helpful really, And obviously, like you said,
my mom playing at super high level, she's taught me
so much, and same with my dad, so they know
a couple of tricks of the trade, and you could.

Speaker 16 (23:18):
Say, so, yeah, they're just so helpful.

Speaker 6 (23:21):
What memories do you have watching your mom play for
the Nationville team.

Speaker 3 (23:25):
Yeah, just to be clear, I just want to clarify
for everybody, like your mom played in the Olympics, she played,
she's a legend at Duluthe so like walk us through that.

Speaker 2 (23:33):
I mean, like she is a legend in this sport. Yeah.

Speaker 17 (23:36):
I can't say I witnessed too much of it. I
was only like two years old, three years old at
her last Olympic, so I don't remember too much. But
I mean all the stuff I hear, and obviously I've seen,
you know, some highlights and.

Speaker 2 (23:50):
The photo stuff like that.

Speaker 17 (23:53):
So it's pretty cool to see, and I wish I
could have seen some more stuff.

Speaker 2 (23:57):
I guess, Yeah, did she ever skate with you? Still?

Speaker 6 (24:00):
Uh?

Speaker 17 (24:00):
Yeah, all the time in the summer, she's out there,
you know, passing plucks and stuff. She doesn't doesn't do
drills or anything like that anymore, but she's yeah, yeah,
but uh, she's both.

Speaker 16 (24:11):
My parents are always out there on ice with me.

Speaker 2 (24:13):
That's so cool.

Speaker 3 (24:14):
As far as present day, your name is really all
over the conference leaderboards top fifteen and goals, top twenty
in face off wins. What stands out to me the
most is your top five in shots on net. So
it's it's obviously very apparent that you're you're a shooter.
But tell us your approach each shift in terms of
kind of creating opportunities for yourself, for your linemates and

(24:38):
the team overall.

Speaker 17 (24:39):
Yeah, I think, uh, just speed drives my play. So
I mean, I'm always looking to score, and you know,
I think you you look to make passes along the way,
and uh, playing with my two linemates and they make
it easy. So and obviously the more shots you take,
the more more chances that you're gonna score.

Speaker 16 (24:57):
So, uh, you know, I guess that's a.

Speaker 17 (25:00):
Pretty cool stat that I'm top five and shots in
the league. So continue to do that and continue to
better my shot too, so score more.

Speaker 2 (25:09):
We're expecting you to be number one at the end
of this weekend.

Speaker 16 (25:12):
Yeah, yeah, we'll.

Speaker 2 (25:12):
Hold you accountable for that one. I think.

Speaker 6 (25:14):
Look, it takes somebody one shift to notice that you're
a fast guy, Like you were one of the best skaters.

Speaker 16 (25:19):
In college hockey.

Speaker 2 (25:21):
You know, you came in as a seventeen year old.

Speaker 6 (25:23):
What were some of the adjustments that you had to
make to this level and look, there are some guys
who are twenty four to twenty five.

Speaker 2 (25:29):
Out there but that are pretty physical.

Speaker 16 (25:31):
Yeah.

Speaker 17 (25:32):
I think speed wasn't the biggest thing for me, just
because how fast I am, But I think just the
physicality and the strength of the guys, like being so
much older than me and you know, so many more
years of training and on the ice and everything like that,
that's something I definitely had to work on down low
and like the corners and stuff like that.

Speaker 16 (25:49):
So I'll just continue to work on.

Speaker 3 (25:51):
That aside from hockey, or perhaps including hockey. How has
your experience been at ASU so far?

Speaker 17 (25:58):
It's been amazing. I mean, either you can't complain the facilities.
I mean, there's there's nothing you can complain about here,
just the school, the atmosphere, the students at the game
are amazing, and the donors and everything like that.

Speaker 2 (26:13):
It's just uh the broadcast.

Speaker 17 (26:16):
Yeah, it's just amazing here. So yeah, there's nothing else
I can say.

Speaker 2 (26:23):
Yeah, no, I did. That's the right answer. Well, what
led you?

Speaker 6 (26:25):
Like, of course, you know, interesting recruiting story. I won't
to ask you about other schools, But what led you
to come here and ultimately to make this decision to
play as a seventeen.

Speaker 2 (26:34):
Year old at issue?

Speaker 16 (26:35):
Uh?

Speaker 17 (26:35):
Well, ultimately I was committed to Michigan State before they
just didn't really have a spot for me, and that
was fine. And so I mean I looked around, talked
to coach Powers. I mean I really liked when I
talked to him the first time around, Like the second
you talked to him, you can kind of like tell
how much he really like loves the game and you know,
just wants to win. I think my parents even mentioned

(26:57):
that to me, like after zoom call, Like how much
you can really tell how much he you know, is
support of his team and wants to win. So I
think that was something that just really made me want
to come here.

Speaker 3 (27:09):
And girl, as a player, I trust your You're focused
on helping your team win right now as much as
possible this season. But I'd be remiss if I didn't
ask about your NHL prospects. You will very likely be
a first round pick in the upcoming NHL draft, very
possibly a top ten or top fifteen pick. When you
hear that, how cool is it to be in those

(27:30):
discussions as one of the top draft projections.

Speaker 17 (27:34):
I mean, it's really cool. I mean it's a lifelong
dream to play in the NHL. So you know, the
higher you go, I guess, the higher chance you're going
to get to play a little bit. So it's it's
really cool. I mean, it's it's your dream of play
in the NHL. That's why I'm here at ASU, That's
why I'm on the ice so much. You know, Yeah,
so I guess, yeah, that's all I got for that.

Speaker 3 (27:55):
I know it's impossible to know for sure in today's
day and we're the world and time we live in.
But in your development plan, do you have an idea
of how many years of college hockey you want to play.

Speaker 17 (28:08):
I do not have like a specific time frame, you know, Uh,
just develop as much as I can as a player.
And you know, it's not really always up to you.
It's up to your NHL teams and stuff like that,
so a lot of it's outside of your control.

Speaker 3 (28:21):
Fair playing against the US national team development program earlier
this year and kind of that midway point, right out
the out of the holiday break, how cool was that?
Did you get to link up with anybody you knew
from from back in those days?

Speaker 11 (28:34):
Uh?

Speaker 17 (28:34):
Yeah, I saw a couple of guys outside of the rink,
you know, walking around, scooting around campus and stuff.

Speaker 2 (28:39):
They were probably having a blast.

Speaker 17 (28:40):
Yeah, No, they're just telling me how cool the campus
is and stuff. Yeah, they're like, we're coming here next year.
Yeah that's awesome. But yeah, it was really cool playing
the obviously a lot of connections from last year, playing
with them and going through all the the hard stuff
we went through. So pretty cool playing that's my old team.

Speaker 3 (28:59):
You have gotten a chance to play not only at Mullet,
but a handful of other rinks around college hockey. Where
has been your favorite aside from Bullet because we know
that's number one. Where where's been your favorite experience so
far this season?

Speaker 16 (29:11):
Jeez, that's kind of tough.

Speaker 17 (29:14):
Well, Denver's was pretty cool, just because I mean, I
guess the atmosphere just like of me thinking I'm going
in you know, national champions right, number one ranked team
in the country. They're undefeated, and we go in and
sweep them. So I have to say that's probably like
my favorite weekend of the year.

Speaker 3 (29:30):
Definitely not the wrong answer. All right, we only have
like a minute to go here. I want to ask
you kind of about the big picture here. Any personal
goals that you've set for yourself this year, and then
as a team, what's it going to take to earn
a couple more wins this weekend? And kind of keep rolling.

Speaker 17 (29:46):
Yeah, for me, I don't really have any specific goals.
I guess set uh, just continuing to you know, get
better work on my shot, you know, work on my physicality,
stuff like that that I already talked about, and as
a team, you know, just continue you get better work
on the small details, you know, the slip ups, you know,
prevent you know, there's always gonna be mistakes, but we
can work to prevent lit more and more of those.

(30:09):
So you know, continue to just score the goals too, please.

Speaker 2 (30:15):
Yeah.

Speaker 17 (30:15):
I mean, there's not too much to say other than
just continue how we're playing. Really, I think we're playing
pretty good right now, and there's not I mean, there's
always areas to prove, but you know, continue to work on.

Speaker 16 (30:27):
What we're doing now.

Speaker 2 (30:28):
If it's not broke, don't fix it.

Speaker 4 (30:29):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (30:30):

Our next one is Tuesday February eighteen, so you can
come grab a slices hang out with us Coach Powers
and our Sun Devil Hockey guests. All right, Coach, I
want to ask about a few individual players. First, the
gentleman right in front of you, Colin Potter, our guest
a moment ago. Unbelievable skater. Clear he's going to be
a top fifteen pick, if not higher, in the NHL draft.

(34:46):
The more you see him play, how much does he
impress you?

Speaker 5 (34:50):
I mean just yeah, I mean there's not much to say,
you know, other than he's been so good for us
in every facet right, and you know, coming in, I
think everybody knew he was gifted, you know, offensively and
could skate and could score and all those things. And
he'll continue to score more and more. He has nine
goals and and and probably fifteen posts. He had four

(35:11):
posts Friday, So to continue to grind through with not
much puck luck has been really impressive. It shows a
lot of maturity. But his his B game is really
really good. You know, he's so good off the puck.
He's tenacious. He applies pressure to the other team everywhere
on the ice. When we don't have the puck, he's
great at getting it back because he wants it so badly.

Speaker 4 (35:32):
He just competes, you know, he competes.

Speaker 5 (35:33):
He's a great kid, he's a really good teammate and
we're really excited for for the future.

Speaker 3 (35:39):
Yeah, future broadcaster too. Apparently because he was really good
there too. Curious far Yeah, no, well one day.

Speaker 2 (35:46):
Maybe he's got hoey love, yeah, whatever.

Speaker 3 (35:49):
All right, curious to hear how you think chrus Lucius
is doing. Very evident that what what your assessment was
before he came back from injury was accurate, just incredible skill.

Speaker 2 (36:00):
Seems like he's still maybe trying.

Speaker 3 (36:02):
To kind of get back into the swing of things
after his injury sidelined him.

Speaker 2 (36:05):
What's your assessment of Cruise right now?

Speaker 5 (36:07):
He took a huge step at Miami and and it
was really his first full week of practice with his line,
you know, and and and they boy did its show.
I mean they they were really good. They were dominant
in both games. Again on Friday, they they they could
have had seven goals on their own, you know. So
they're just gonna get better and better. Cruise is starting

(36:27):
to trust his legs more and more. And once he
really buys into trusting, you know, his legs, and and
and in the game shape that he's continuing to get in.

Speaker 4 (36:36):
He's special.

Speaker 5 (36:37):
He's he makes plays that that nobody else we've ever
had can make.

Speaker 4 (36:40):
He made one on Friday on Patzi's goal.

Speaker 5 (36:43):
I don't I don't know if we've ever had a
player that can make that play and make it look
so easy and natural to do. And you know the
best thing about him is is is just like all
these kids, they just.

Speaker 4 (36:54):
Want to win, you know.

Speaker 5 (36:55):
He he's unselfish, and he's a great kid. He's a
great teammate. Uh and we're just thrilled he's here.

Speaker 6 (37:02):
It's always a good sign when you guys have one
A and one B in terms of options for Forward
of the Month in the conference. Of course, Ryan Kerwin
won the award. What has made him so special this month?
It seems like every ship he's scoring a goal.

Speaker 4 (37:16):
Yeah, I think I think he's a big step that
he's He's always scored his whole life. You know, he's
always been a goal scorer.

Speaker 5 (37:21):
But what what we always try to really get get
these players to to understand is if you just buy
in doing what it takes to win, you know, the
natural ability what you are will take over, you know,
and and and it'll happen you know, organically that way.

Speaker 4 (37:39):
But kur Kurrz just wants to win.

Speaker 5 (37:42):
He he he doesn't care about scoring and and and
that's the way it works when you play a team game,
and you're unselfish and and one of our core values
is selflessness. And he's a he's the epitome of a
selfless player in person. Cares about everybody around him more
than he cares about himself. And it shows, you know,
and and and shows in his game. And he's really

(38:04):
bought into, you know, adding that extra probably sixty feet
to his game that he.

Speaker 4 (38:09):
May be lack prior to playing here.

Speaker 5 (38:11):
And now he's a two hundred foot player that's playing
the right way and he's getting rewarded for it with
more opportunity, more ice critical situations. He's out there five
on six for us now. Yeah, because he's trusted in
defensive situations and that'll continue to grow. And he's maybe
a guy that we're gonna throw on the kill now
because he especially with the size to once that he's
got a good stick, and with Benji out we need

(38:31):
somebody to step up.

Speaker 4 (38:33):
So he's he's a he's a great player.

Speaker 3 (38:35):
Yeah, super fun to watch. I want to ask you
about goaltenders. PAVs has has gotten the start the last
several games too great games this past weekend.

Speaker 2 (38:44):
Where do things stand in your mind between PAVs and
Gibbie it didn't.

Speaker 4 (38:47):
Where they always do.

Speaker 16 (38:48):
They're both great.

Speaker 5 (38:49):
They're both great options for us to win on any
given night. We believe in both of them. I think
we've proven that and they've proven it themselves. They're both
really good. You know, Gibby had a little bit of
a slip up obviously against CC. He was really good
in the first two periods though. He was obviously tremendous
against North Dakota and swept Saint Cloud at Saint Clouds.
So PAVs ten and one in their last eleven And

(39:11):
the challenge I give to every player at the start
of the year is make my life miserable on how
to make the lineup, you know, make me lose sleep
over who I put in. And those two kids have
done that in a big way. And you'll see both
of them here down the stretch. They're both they both
give us a chance to win every night.

Speaker 6 (39:28):
Yeah, there's a sense around the group that I picked
on and I'm sure Tyler has as well, and especially
on road trips, that the team is always doing something together,
even if it's three hours after a meal, you know,
the day you get in or you know why, like
what made this group so able to gel so quickly
and how are they so close to where?

Speaker 2 (39:48):
Again, winning helps, of course, but to play at this level.

Speaker 5 (39:52):
I mean, obviously we we we really focus and preach
culture in the off season, but most importantly, it's it's
our leaders captains, right and and you know, when you
got a kid like Ethan Schmaggie who's the ultimate character
guy and and cares about you know, the team, the
program more than himself, it goes downhill from there. Tom Murchison,

(40:13):
Benji Eckerley, Lucas Sillinger have been a great captain group
and they you know, they're guys that have come here
and helped us build this program in a major way.
And when you go from you know, Schmaggie and Merch
and Benji, guys that played at Ocean Side. They're the
last of that breed. They're the last of those founding
fathers that came here and played at ocean Side. Mullett

(40:34):
wasn't a reality yet, NCHD wasn't a reality yet, they
still wanted to come to Arizona State help us build
a program that carries a lot of weight in that
locker room because they're the epitome of what our mantra
is and be the tradition, and they do a great
job making sure everybody falls in line.

Speaker 3 (40:51):
I hope this is the shortest answer you have to
give this week. Do you have any injury update on
anybody aside from Already and Benji.

Speaker 4 (40:59):
Other than that those two, we're not going w good
to go.

Speaker 5 (41:02):
And again, you know, we're just at the point where
whatever we got we got, you know, and we believe
in every guy that we throw in. You know, guys
like David him Vinch and Tony Akille have done an
unbelievable job when called upon and helped us win a
lot of games this year.

Speaker 4 (41:19):
Tucker Nests same thing.

Speaker 5 (41:22):
You know, we have a lot of depth and our
staff did a great job building this roster. And you know,
whatever we got we got. We feel good about going
into to play whoever we play.

Speaker 2 (41:32):
Yeah, as you should.

Speaker 3 (41:33):
All right, let's dive into what everybody here is wondering
about the series ahead. Denver comes to town always a
dangerous team. It's kind of odd right this year because
the Piots top ten pair wise, but they're fighting for
home ice in the conference tournament. Asu of course, swept
the Pioneers at Magnus Arena back in November, the biggest
sweep in program history. Remind us what we need to

(41:55):
look out for with Denver.

Speaker 4 (41:57):
I mean, what not to look out for, that's the
question right there. Their special just beat.

Speaker 5 (42:02):
Omaha eleven to two, right and and so they're gonna
come in here, you know, feeling really good about where
they are and and and off a huge dominant win.
We can't hide, we can't hide from anybody. People know
that we're legit, people know that we're good. I don't
think anybody outside of our room expected us to go
up there and have success when we played them in November.

(42:23):
And they're gonna come in with a chip on their shoulder,
and we you know, we didn't get their best. You know,
I can honestly say that I've seen them at their
best and we didn't get their.

Speaker 4 (42:31):
Best up there. We're gonna get their best this weekend,
you know.

Speaker 5 (42:34):
So it's gonna be a great test of where we
are and and can our guys rise to the level
of our competition again.

Speaker 4 (42:40):
My bet is on us.

Speaker 5 (42:42):
I think that we we will, and it's gonna be
a hell of a series for our fans to watch them.

Speaker 2 (42:45):
Yeah, A stick in town.

Speaker 6 (42:47):
I'll tell you that what kind of similarities do you
see with in the You know, of course program wise difference,
but the these two teams specifically. Look, you mentioned, you
know how teams are got to be really cognizant of
you guys on the breakout and on rush opportunities and
having good gaps. You kind of felt the same way
leading up to Denver on what we had to expect

(43:07):
from from a team like that. You guys have scored
the most goals in the NCHC, playing ten more than Denver.
Where are your teams similar and where are you guys different?

Speaker 5 (43:16):
I think we're similar in that we both have incredible
high end skill right and and tons of team speed, a.

Speaker 4 (43:22):
Lot of depth.

Speaker 5 (43:24):
Top two power plays in the country are exemplified, you know,
the the level of skill that you know you're going
to see on the ice Friday and Saturday, you know,
I mean, but they're they're the defending national champs.

Speaker 2 (43:36):
You know.

Speaker 5 (43:36):
To compare ourselves to them, it would be unjust, you know,
And and we still have a lot to prove, and
we're still the new guy trying to develop rivalries and
and earn respect. And we got eight games left to
continue to do that and that's our intention.

Speaker 3 (43:51):
I know before the CC series you said it was
perhaps a little easier to scout them since you have
played them earlier in the year.

Speaker 2 (43:58):
Is that the case with Denver as well?

Speaker 5 (44:00):
Yeah, I mean we feel like we know what it's
going to take to have success this weekend.

Speaker 4 (44:05):
We've done it.

Speaker 5 (44:06):
We have that standard that we need to meet, and
I think we're going to have to exceed that standard
for the first time because of how good Denver is
going to be this weekend and just how dial they're
going to be, as you know, coming down the stretch
is the defending national champs and hungry to get some
wins back against us. So yeah, absolutely.

Speaker 6 (44:25):
For me, the circumstances of this weekend are a little
bit interesting in the fact that Denver is trying to
fight back in the conference standings, But is an opportunity
for you guys to worry if you rack up more
wins you continue to you know, it's what a top
eight win on the pairwise right now, which are you
specifically focused on? Is it only mostly the conference standings

(44:47):
pairwise will take care of itself or is it both?

Speaker 5 (44:49):
Well, I mean i'd be lying if it's not both
right and but at the end of the day, it's
like I said last week, Friday night, there's three points
up for grabs.

Speaker 4 (44:56):
Were our goals to go and get three.

Speaker 5 (44:58):
Points Friday, continue to bank points, continue to collect points,
and and and we're we're playing to win this league.
You know, if we win this league, the NCAA Tournament
will completely take care of itself and we won't even
have to worry about what happens after these next eight
games because we'll be in. So that's the goal, to
win the league. This is a huge weekend. In order
for us to do that, we're probably gonna have to

(45:20):
replicate what we did up there in order to do that.
Because Western has a couple of games in hand. These
guys have a couple of games in hand, so you
know they're they're from a from a Penrose Cup standpoint,
these are must wins. From an NCAA tournament standpoint. I
wouldn't say they're must wins, but boy would they opportunities
there do a lot for our resume.

Speaker 3 (45:40):
Only got less than a minute left, but I did
want to ask them not to get too ahead of ourselves.
But after Denver it's Duluth, Western Michigan and Omaha remaining.
Can you put in perspective just how challenging the path
ahead is for your team and how confident you are
in this group.

Speaker 4 (45:53):
It's no more challenging than what we've already been through.
And that's that's just the reality.

Speaker 2 (45:57):
Right.

Speaker 5 (45:58):
So we've been there, we've done that, We've played all
the teams, We've had success against all these teams. We
know what it takes to beat all these teams. We
just got to go do it, you know. And and
I like the way our guys really responded this weekend
at Miami in a must win situation. You know, I
just I just believe in what we have so much,

(46:20):
and I know the guys in the room believe in
each other, and that's all it takes.

Speaker 2 (46:24):
Yeah, they continue to prove it.

Speaker 3 (46:25):

Speaker 3 (49:59):
Wapp back in tem fee for overtime on Help Frozen Over,
Tyler Paley and Alex Coyle here on the Mountain America
Credit Union Sun Devil Radio Network. A much more fulfilling
weekend in Ohio this time around, Sir compared to when
we were there at the beginning of last season.

Speaker 2 (50:17):
Well, I had some Skyland chili. It was pretty damn good. Yeah, yeah,
you gotta. What were your thoughts on that? We got
to get your rating for Skyline.

Speaker 3 (50:23):
I'm glad I had it. Don't need to have it again, Okay, fair,
That's that's I think where I've landed on that about you.

Speaker 2 (50:29):
Did you have the flavored ice cream?

Speaker 16 (50:31):
No?

Speaker 2 (50:31):
Yeah, they had the the what was it chili? Was
Skyline flavored ice cream? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (50:34):
Lane flavored ice cream? Yeah? I think I'm good without it,
with all due respect. Did you like it?

Speaker 2 (50:40):
I never had it? No, that ice cream? The Skyline experience.
I've been there hundreds of times. Styler, he's a pro.

Speaker 3 (50:46):
Okay, all right, Let's start with the unbelievable success of
Ryan Kerwin in particular NCHC January Player of the Month.

Speaker 2 (50:56):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (50:56):
Pretty impressive there. Kerwin leads the NCC in several offensive categories.
He scores at a rate of more than one point
per game. He's simply the finished shirt that ASU needs
at this stage of the season.

Speaker 6 (51:10):
Yeah, and again, I think what coach Bowers said about
his utility becoming a full two hundred foot player only
adds to the resume of what he can do and
also score this many goals and be that guy. And
I think, what when you watch his shifts and you
look at the way he skates, it's his the way
he gets himself in position.

Speaker 2 (51:30):
He's not necessarily the fastest guy.

Speaker 6 (51:31):
He does have speed, Sure he can skate, but it's
it's getting his body in positions and getting leverage when
he's you know, going into the corner and battling for
a pucket or creating some space near the slot. Like
that's what makes him such a good player. To the
spatial awaren awareness and adding the skill with the stick handling.

Speaker 3 (51:49):
I thought it was really fascinating that coach said he
will likely be on the p K moving forward with
with Benji done for the season. And I wanted to
talk to you because you brought this up to coach
about special teams in general, and.

Speaker 2 (52:02):
Just it's been really good.

Speaker 3 (52:04):
It was good at the start of the year, but
it's just gotten to be like fantastic since the new year. Really,
it's just another threat that ASU poses, And to be honest,
it's kind of difficult to find like a weak spot
in this team this.

Speaker 6 (52:17):
Year, right, and look, it was really interesting because the
first half, first two thirds of what we've gone through already,
people were like, oh, what's wrong with the power play?

Speaker 2 (52:27):
Where's the powerpul had been?

Speaker 6 (52:28):
It was still a twenty percent, but it has literally
scored the most goals in the country since the calendar
turned to twenty twenty five, So it's been the most lethal,
it's been consistent. It's been helped by out by some
five minute majors. But again, the difference in the first
ten games of this team and the most recent fifteen
has been the ability to capitalize on those five minutes

(52:50):
and not just score one, score two, three, and even four.
So just making an impact that way it really just
completely changes hockey games.

Speaker 3 (52:57):
Yeah, all right, So recapping the seasones started well, ended
in disaster fantastic winning Game one, followed by their worst
loss of the year in Game two.

Speaker 2 (53:07):
Considering the stakes it was, it.

Speaker 3 (53:08):
Was tough to leave that series like feeling completely positive.
But at the end of the day, you still pulled
out three points against a good Colorado college team.

Speaker 2 (53:17):
Yeah, it was.

Speaker 6 (53:18):
It was happened really quickly, and again you look at
different ways. If you could have just you know, maybe
found a way to push that to overtime or prolong
that a little bit to get another point out of it.
You could feel a bit better. But I think, look,
you're gonna look back on that moment, you know, assuming
and knowing Arizona State is going to do a lot
of good things in the future for this season, that

(53:40):
that's going to be a moment you can look back on. Okay,
this kind of recalibrated everybody. It gave us fuel to
have an intense week of practice and go up and
take care of business up against Miami and reset the
tone to where like, Okay, that's what it feels like
to lose, or that's what it feels like when you
take one percent off the gas pedal, it has to
stay one hundred and ten.

Speaker 3 (54:00):
Yeah, you never want to see a game result like that,
but you do look to the silver linings of what
can it do and how much can it produce?

Speaker 2 (54:07):
Like the fire within you.

Speaker 6 (54:08):
But that's the difference between good teams and great teams
is using losses like that to go like this instead
of have it be your roller coaster where you fall
off the cliff.

Speaker 3 (54:18):
All right, Miami felt like there was just never a
doubt in either of those games.

Speaker 6 (54:22):
That's how it should have been though, right, Yeah, and
again like it's all about taking care of business, because
that's the one team in the conference to where you
have an unfortunate event like you did with Colorado College
or North Dakota.

Speaker 2 (54:35):
Or an air Force.

Speaker 6 (54:36):
It look that really tanks the resume, right, just because
of where Miami is Now, Miami gets a win against
somebody else around the conference, it'll actually, you know, it'll
probably jump them twenty spots in the parawise they just
haven't won. And again, Miami's going to be a player
in the conference for years to come. You can already
sense that the mentality and the morale of that group

(54:58):
is completely different than what it was when we went
in there last year.

Speaker 3 (55:02):
All Right, let's chat for just a brief moment about
the series ahead of us. Denver back in Tempe, still
one of the best teams in the country, arguably the
most pure talent on any roster. But the Sun Devils
now have home iice advantage and two wins in their pocket.

Speaker 2 (55:16):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (55:16):
Look, we kind of joke around my feelings of North Dakota,
but I really enjoy Denver. I really enjoy the battles
that Arizona State has had with them in the past.

Speaker 2 (55:27):
I really enjoy the way they play hockey.

Speaker 6 (55:29):
They have a phenomenal coaching staff, and so that means
brings a different level of intensity to the series, I think,
and it just becomes of who can be the sharpest
at any given moment. Unfortunately for Denver, they were not
very sharp in what October November when they did battle,
and as coach Byers mentioned, you can expect them to
be razors edge this weekend.

Speaker 3 (55:49):
All right, We're excited for that one six thirty pre
game Friday four thirty Saturday here on Fox Sports nine ten.
You can also watch on CBS Sports Network Friday and
