(00:00):
Jonathan campon Journey. Jonathan, thankyou so much for taking some time to
talk to me today to talk aboutwhat's going on and Journey in the past
and the future. We're going totalk about the past, but I really
want to know what's going on withyou guys right now. Well, you
know, we're excited to do thislast leg with Toto. They've been incredible.
I don't know if you know this, but Pee Luke At their son
married my daughter Madison, and theygot married last year after meeting at a
(00:23):
Journey concert in La and so itwas love at first sight, and you
never know can happen at a Journeyshow. Steve and I go back to
the seventies. He played on mydemos when I was a singer, songwriter
and solo guy. We go wayback, and it's amazing to be on
stage with a band that sold, you know, forty million records and had
five top ten hits, and itmakes for a really great night of music.
(00:45):
Our fans have adored the lineup. You know. We had Billy Idol's
scheduled a couple of years ago andhe couldn't make it, and Neil's idea
was to bring Toto and it justit clicked. And our fans, they
get there early, you know,is to the hear they're set. They're
amazing. I think Steve is playingso well and their vocals are insane.
So we're proud to be on stagewith such a legacy act. You know,
(01:07):
you kind of brought up the past, and I had actually some questions
about some of the things that havegone on over the last forty years.
Don't worry, don't be scared,but I'm sure I'm totally transparent about everything.
Don't worry about me. Well, really, Chicago, you know,
you know, Chicago guys are upfrontand Frank, you know, we're going
to give you the real deal.Great now I want Chicago pizza and we
(01:29):
can't get it anywhere here. Andthis, I know. You've been with
the band since nineteen eighty and thingshave changed a lot in this world since
nineteen eighty And when we were goingto Journey shows, and we were every
time you came through Omaha. Whenwe were going to Journey shows in the
early eighties, we were all onthe floor, all of us just pushing
to get to the front of thatstage. It was just like a big
(01:53):
party. Clearly that's not the caseanymore. The venues have changed quite a
bit for not just you, butfor as. Yeah there's a little more
you know, rules and rags, but they sound better, you know.
I have to say most of thenew venues sound amazing. So it's always
dangerous anytime, you know, youget a crowd and are pushing and shoven
and you know, we've seen alot of crazy, nasty things happen in
(02:15):
concerts. So I'm just grateful afterCOVID, you know, to get back
to it. And we took achance early on. We were one of
the first bands after Justin Bieber togo out, you know, and they
all said we were crazy and wewere going to get sick, and you
know what, we survived it.We were able to get through it and
do really well, you know, and those need to get back to that.
(02:35):
And just grateful for our fan baseand staying with us and being loyal
with us. And so I mean, party to the rafters on a Tuesday
night, that's pretty great. Doesthe venue change Does that change the the
energy of the band, because Iknow I'm sitting out there and if I
even stand up, will you startto get a little side eyed? Sit
down, lady. But does thatchange the energy of the band. No,
I don't think so. I thinkeverybody's kind of conformed, you know,
(03:00):
and certainly it's okay to stand andscream and dance and hug and kiss
and we see just about everything outthere. You know. I think you
have to keep your clothes on.That's one thing. Back in the old
days, they just take their clothesoff, you know, be like,
okay, wait a minute, holdon, hold out here. If actually
it happened in Omaha one time,No beause some lady got totally buck naked
(03:20):
and they asked her to go.You know, she's still on top of
her boyfriend's shoulders, and we werelike playing with cheap trick, and oh
my goodness, every all the roadiescame out from behind the stage. You
had to watch. Oh, I'msure, Oh it was. It was
one of those moments like only inrock and roll would you see this,
you know. But she was fancyfree and loving her nakedness. You know,
what's the what's the worst show thatyou ever did? You wish you
(03:43):
could forget about? Oh my god, let's see. Oh it would have
to be at Red Rocks. Itit sleeated on us. We had rain
and snow coming down blowing on us. My keyboard got soaked wet, the
monitors were stopped for king. Uhyeah, it was really really bad that
one. We got through it,but it was nasty. My hands were
(04:06):
like absolutely frozen. I don't knowhow I even played. How do you
get through stuff like that? Youknow, well, that's what I was
thinking. At what point do youfinally say, you know what, we're
done, We're done. We're showsover. You know, yeah, we
you know, we had shows wherethe storm comes in and the video screen
starts, you know, waving inthe wind, and the big stacks of
(04:27):
a speaker start going back and forthand back and forth, and we got
to call the show. You know, it's not safe for us to be
on stage or the audience for thatbatter. Uh So we've had those who
are we had to cancel. It'sjust too crazy. Or you'll land in
a place and there's a monsoon happening, and you know, we were in
Memphis one time and oh my god, when we showed up and they had
cancelation insurance, and you know,we never played, but boy, what
(04:50):
a what an amazing lightning We barelygot out of there. I remember the
bus. It was just kind ofsliding all over the place. It was
raining so hard. But you're fromIago, Yeah you should be used to
this. I could deal with it. Rain sleets. No, come on,
well, are headed back there. We're heading back there to hubb actually
(05:11):
next week. So I already bookeda Cus game on Thursday night. I'm
ready. Well, when you're inOmaha, you gotta have a pizza.
Lucy, and you a pizza. You know, you can send it,
but I don't know if it's gonnamake it. It'll probably be cold by
the time it gets to Omaha. You'll have to put it in the oven.
But just and you one. There'sa new place called pecause it's really
amazing. You will freak out. It's great stuff. You know. I
(05:32):
used to go to that, thepizza joint, and you're gonna you're gonna
think, why would you go there? It's a chain. I went to
Uno down there on Off State inOntario. And you still love that pizza.
Yeah, it's still there. It'sstill there, and it was one
of the original deep dish pizzas. You know. They still are putting on
a great product. The new thingover there is that stuff pizza. You
(05:54):
know, they they make a deepdish and they stuff it with cheese,
and I'm just not a huge fanof that, you know, I think
that needs to be on top.I agree. Well, when you're in
Chicago and you're traveling back through Omaha, if you guys happen to just maybe
want to drop off some portillos becausewe have none here, I would be
happy to take that. Well,we're gonna I think we're flying. I'm
(06:17):
gonna say we're going to have someon a airplane. I'll hook you up
before the show and just give youa box of stuff. Okay, I
had no idea that this conversation wasgoing to go right to food, but
that does not surprise me, knowingme, you've been doing this for decades.
What do you want to talk about? What do you want to say?
Nobody ever asks you about? Youknow how grateful we are for the
(06:42):
loyalty and for our fans sticking withus through Thickenson. And you know our
Neil's now celebrating sixteen years oh mygoodness, as our least singer. It's
probably the longest any singer has donefor Journey. He's been crushing it every
night. He's got his kids onthe road. It's a joy to watch
him in act with his children. And so it's a special year. And
(07:02):
then we're going to try to putout a new single and see if we
can get that going on with thesong I wrote for our fans. I
think we have the gold plated fans. So thank you so much from our
hearts. We really appreciate you comingand and partying with us. We plan
on continuing on and bringing that legacyand tradition get over one hundred million worldwide
(07:23):
sales, and playing with Toto hasbeen a joy, honestly. So you're
going to see a combination of overone hundred and fifty million records sold,
twenty five greatest hits. That doesn'tget any better night of music than what
we're going to offer, you know. And if they're just really super guys,
they sound so good and the twobands, it's a two for one
not to be missed. And justwant to say thanks for coming and considering
(07:46):
it and come party with us.Man Jonathan Kane of Journey, thank you
so much. I'm looking forward tothe show. Thank you so much for
talking with us today. And givingme those great pizza memories. Yeah,
we'll try to bring some back foryou. Hey, get it delivered.
I'll get it delivered to the station. That's a deal. You go get
ready for your show Monday night atthe Chi, and we're going to be
(08:07):
looking forward to seeing you. Thanks, Lucy, thank you. Have a
great day. All right, Byebye bye. I didn't want to ask
him about all the politics of theband over the last couple of years,
but you know, he sounded likehe was ready to talk about that,
which is pretty cool. But itreally is just about the music and about
the joy the memories that Journey canbring back for so many of us and
(08:28):
a new generation too. So thanksfor listening to this podcast, my conversation
with Jonathan Kane, keyboardist and rhythmguitar player of Journey since nineteen eighty.
It's going to be a great showat the Chi. Tickets still available.
