(00:05):
Welcome to the choir room. Inthe choir room, Patterson, Yeah,
get to the choir room. EricaCavell, Welcome to the choir room.
I like the choir room. Hey, choir SONY had a great idea.
I don't even know how to evenstart it. I do because people are
choirs. I think that's what wetalked about. So because we both grew
(00:26):
up in choirs, and for mostsingers, that's where it started. Absolutely,
did you grow up in church?I got Christ? I did.
Church wrote, Oh yeah you areare we are anointed by God, anointed.
This is the church. Oh GodChrist. My husband is p a
(00:51):
W. So he rebukes that song. Do you all do? How did
that work? Oh Lord? Yes? He Apostolic Lord him and you had
and the air Dawkins and all thoseguys. But it's always just a I'm
like, y'all know, it ain'tno coaching or no Apostolic section in heaven,
right. See. I like totry to bring them down and say,
you all formed outside of the tenCome on history. So you had
(01:19):
a great choir day when you werea young person. I did so.
I was twelve years old and mymom was over the choir and I was
outside playing jump rope with my friendsand my mom sent word and said,
somebody tell Erica to come in here. And I was like, for what,
And that's when I That's how Ijoined the choir. But I would
sit next to my friend, myfriend's mom, and she would tap me
and she'd go, it's gonna matter. One day she said, I know
(01:42):
you want to be outside, shesaid, but you got something special.
And so I stayed in the choir, fell in love with the choir.
Eventually all my friends joined, andthe choir was like the heartbeat of my
church. And we had something calledChoir Night every first Sunday night, and
all kinds of people would come, like even when we were young, teenage
girls and you know, boys wouldtry to talk to us. We'd be
like, you can't have my number, but you could come to church and
(02:02):
they would come to Choir Night. And so it was. It was the
culture of my life, the choirand the music, and so whether we
were singing Milton Brunson, because Iremember Tina's first solo, I think was
just ask Yes, And I thinkwhat was I singing? It was some
John Pea key song I can't remember, but just so many songs, so
many great memories of learning, unity, learning blend, learning to stand together
(02:25):
and clap together, and just pricelessmemories that I hold dear in my heart
today. Children. Your church wasin California, Yes, what part of
California? La La proper. Well, we were in North Hollywood and we
just got a building and that's inSan Fernando, which is about thirty five
minutes outside of La no traffic max. But with people to drive from everywhere
(02:52):
from San Diego, they some peopledrive an hour away. It's a total
total blessing. And so I didn'tstart the choir until maybe about six months
in it, and I called afriend of mine, George Potts, who
used to be with Bishop Morton, who moved to LA who helped start the
choir. And it's just it's beensuch a such a blessing. It's always
so sweet when I get to goto choir rehearsal. So when I'm back
(03:13):
in town on Saturday, so Igo to choir rehearsal. So you are
in the mix with the members.Oh yeah, I'm in the soprano section.
I really should be in the altosection. Sometimes ten are depending on
the day. But we do whatwe can. Oh, yes, fluctuating.
I love that Erica is in thechoir as Albertina Walker was in the
(03:34):
choir too until she died. Seriously, really, I mean, I think
it's just something very humbling and beautifulabout singing with other people. And you
know, because I do what Ido, people are always like, you
know, I'll see their eyes getbig when I sit next to certain people,
especially if they knew and just jointhe choir, you know, and
God hasn't allowed their voice to getwhere they you know, yeah, and
(03:57):
I go, that's all right, that's not the note. Okay, that's
not the note. So when youwere coming up, was it was it
strenuous rehearsals. Oh yes, ohgod, they went one one by one.
I need everybody to sing the note, old school. And then somebody'd
be like, baby, this isnot your ministry. Yeah, it was
(04:21):
that. It was like that.We didn't play. We wanted McDonald gospel
fast in nineteen ninety. There's avideo floating around with me in a light
blue robe and some really crunchy hair. You know, God has brought me
a madylum. It's crunchy, it'scrunchy. We sung I know who holds
tomorrow hallelujah. But we were Wepracticed standing up, sitting down. We
(04:42):
rehearsed every Monday, and like Isaid, so many of the young people.
The culture of our church was ourchoir. And we started our own
prayer meeting on Tuesday nights and peoplewould get filled with the holygoals. And
yeah, we were, we wasjust we was very safe. Everything was
a sin. Everything, Oh yeah, God, oh yeah, oh yeah,
absolutely yeah. And I see thatyour daughter is, I would say,
(05:03):
following in in your footsteph singing. She's in the choir college, and
how has that choir experience been forher to she's sing when she when she's
home too in the choir, orshe sings when she's home. I don't
when she's home, she acts likeshe's so scared, like we made her
get on the worship team, likewe'll make her lead every now and again.
But she's like, oh, Idon't know. I feel like,
girl, if you don't quit beingso dramatic. She's so so talented,
(05:25):
but she's she's coming out of thatand and owning who she is and not
feeling like I will only be comparedto my parents. I said, you
will, but you're good enough.I'm not gonna tell you they're not gonna
they one thousand percent gonna compare youto your mom. But you are amazing,
without question. I said, youdon't have a second rate gift.
You don't have an in addition toyou know, God gave you something that
(05:46):
I had nothing to do with me, and everything to do with the purpose
on your life. So you sayingyes to me, but really yes to
God. And so when you dothat with your whole heart, everything is
gonna change. I said, youcan give me a reluctant yes, but
you really who you're saying no tois God? Is that what you want
to do? Absolutely? Mom,gosh, it's so dramatic, I said,
no, you so dramatic. Ilove it. Sound like it sounds
(06:11):
like Maddie and Tweakie and Jackie.Oh yeah, my baby, she has
to sing too. Yeah, myvoice is not like that because you're not
practicing enough. Getting her so andyou'll sound better. Yeah, it's there.
Uh huh. The gift is there, and it it'll make room for
you. Absolutely well. This wholenationwide thing that happened with my daughter,
with her playfully singing nationwide. Thatwas about twenty seventeen. Now it's come
(06:34):
back around, and because of TikTokit went even further. So nationwide reached
out. I said, keep singing, precious Wow. College Funds posted again,
saying one more choir moment. Ijust this is fucked in my head.
Sister Act, you're just singing thechoir and sister I was, and
(06:54):
Sister Act too, and this fatherestsang, Lord send a revival. That's
right with Iris Graves, who's fromhere. She had come to a choir
knight at my church. Read Irisreed. Yes, she had come to
a choir knight and asked me ifI would be apart, and I said
yes. She actually asked Tina couldhave done it too, But Tina was.
(07:14):
She was like, I work atMcDonald's and I'm not lead. I
don't know what this is, andwe don't know what the pey gonna be.
I said, we keep serving infries here. And so at first,
you know, my family was like, we can't even see you in
the movie. I said, butI can see that check really good.
So pauls if you must to seemy face, but I know that I
was insin directed it was a greatmoment. It was a great moment in
(07:36):
life. From that I do.It used to be really nice and now
it's just like seventy eighty nine cents. Yes, but they used to be
beautiful around Christmas time. I loveit. What's coming up? Any any
new ventures TV? Because everybody's Iknow you, I know you did the
(07:57):
reality thing. Yes, I didjust sign a new agreement and there are
three shows coming. Oh wow, yeah I can't fully yeah, but three
things. I'm really really excited.Yes, yes, one will surprise a
(08:18):
lot of folks. Wow, Idon't know if they're gonna be mad,
what they like being mad? Theyprobably will, but it's the truth.
I'm telling you, they would beall right. I love it. In
