Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's another edition of Judy with an Ifour travel. This episode,
we hit the road to historic Main Street in Saint Charles, Missouri.
Me Linden Nolan from the twenty ninth annual Mosaic's Fine
Art Festival that is happening September thirteenth through the fifteenth
in Saint Charles, Missouri.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
Hi, Melinda, Hi, how are you?

Speaker 1 (00:20):
I am really excited because this happens to be my
favorite arts festival.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
We love to hear that.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
It's such I mean, as it is, we already know
Main Street Saint Charles is just such a great place.
I feel like it's it's just got its own character
and everything. But then you add to it the Mosaic
Art the Fine Arts Festival, and it just seems every
year it gets better and better.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
Oh great.

Speaker 3 (00:44):
We love to hear that too, because we're always striving
to make it better.

Speaker 4 (00:48):
So I love that.

Speaker 1 (00:50):
Let's talk about first you, Belinda, how what do you
do exactly for the arts festival?

Speaker 3 (00:57):
I mean, technically I am the vice president of the board,
but Denise Wolf and I kind of co chair it
because both of us knew that being you know, full
time workers still in our lives, we weren't going to
be able to handle it on our own.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
So when the.

Speaker 3 (01:13):
Last president retired, we decided that, you know, it was
a good idea to tag team to get all was done.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
It's always a good idea to get more people involved.
And how you come up with these artists to come
from all over the place to be in this festival.

Speaker 4 (01:29):
How do you do that?

Speaker 3 (01:31):
There's a great website out there called the Application and
that's actually where we run our applications through, do our
jurying through and everything. A lot of art festivals nationwide
use that and so a lot of artists find us
through that, but a lot of them also just word
of mouth.

Speaker 1 (01:48):
You know.

Speaker 3 (01:49):
Once once artists find this show and they love it,
then of course they talk to their friends about it,
and then we do you know, we promote it in
different ways to the artists.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
Too, out on different online.

Speaker 3 (02:02):
Sources and resources that they use to find our shows
that they want to exhibit in. And and then of
course we do a lot of promotion to the patrons
too to try and get a lot of people to
come to the festival.

Speaker 2 (02:14):
So but yeah, we've got we've.

Speaker 3 (02:15):
Got people coming from all over the United States, which
which is a lot of fun, you know, because you
get to talk to the artists and not only learn
about what they're doing in their art, but also about
what you know, where they're from and why they chose
our festival, and you know, sometimes they're just doing this
big loop to.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
The United States, right and they get to travel. And
for me, as somebody who's going, who loves going, I
love to talk. If you know, it's good that it's
three days because I like to meet ach artists and
there's a lot of them, and it really does bring
art to everybody, because I think a lot of times
when it comes to fine arts, people might think, you know,

(02:57):
it can be snobby a gallery or this is for kids.
You have a whole area for the kiddos. It's a
way to bring art to everyone.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
It is. And our festival is free.

Speaker 3 (03:10):
A lot of them charging admission, we do know that's true.
So we have free parking, we have the free festival,
we have free activities for the kids. But yeah, another
thing that our jury really looks for as far as
the artist go, is to make sure that we have
a wide range of things that are affordable too. So

(03:31):
many art festivals you go to, everything's in the thousands,
you know, And why while I appreciate that on originals,
it's nice when there are also some prints involved or
some smaller pieces that make it more affordable so that
everyone can enjoy art.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
And I still have my hand painted shower curtain from
a few years.

Speaker 4 (03:52):
This is quite a ways back.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
Oh my gosh, do.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
You remember that artist? Oh she was fantastic. She had
she was very whimsical and she painted shower curtains and
there was one of a I'm a redhead, one of
a redheaded mermaid, just covering the you know, the little
parts that you don't want seen. And I loved it,
and it was very affordable. I think it was like
fifty bucks for this thing. And I mean it's that

(04:17):
kind of stuff from obviously photographs and oils and acrylics too.
I mean there's some really steampunk stuff I've seen there.
What is something like things that stand out for you
for this year?

Speaker 3 (04:31):
Oh gosh, I mean we have a wide range, and
right off the top of my head, I don't I
don't think of anything specific, but there's just I mean
we have everything from you know, the watercolor paintings and
acrylic and oil. We've got several pottery people, and they're
all different.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
You know.

Speaker 3 (04:50):
It's like you think, oh, you know pottery or ceramics,
and I mean everybody's got their own spin on things,
which is nice, you know.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
It's just that's what I love about art. And I
mean everybody likes different things too, so it.

Speaker 3 (05:01):
Just makes it so much fun because you see so
many variations, and then you get to talk to them
and find out what their inspiration was as far as
coming up with their pieces too, and then it means
even more I think once you hear the story behind
the art.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
So true and there's a lot of them that you
will see the originals, but then they'll have prints. It's
like you said, you know, it might be a little
more for the original, and you go, I really like
that painting. They'll oh, there's prints there. I could get
a twenty by twenty four print and right.

Speaker 4 (05:30):
Which I love. I love that, Yeah, I do too.

Speaker 3 (05:33):
And you know, in our woodworkers, they'll have some small
woodworking pieces, you know that they've made, you know, a
little home decorps items and things like that that you
know next to their you know, three thousand dollars huge.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
Wall hanging piece that's awesome.

Speaker 3 (05:48):
I love it that they try to make sure that
they're that they've got stuff.

Speaker 2 (05:52):
For everyone, you know.

Speaker 4 (05:53):
Yeah, and they really do price point yes, and so
you've got so again, I want to give the dates.

Speaker 1 (05:58):
So it starts Friday, September thirteenth at four pm in
the afternoon, and then it runs through Sunday until four pm,
and you can volunteer. You're looking for volunteers at the festival, correct.

Speaker 3 (06:10):
We are.

Speaker 4 (06:11):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (06:12):
Really, it's just for simple stuff. It's for you know,
handing out water to the artists. We try to provide
them with enough water so that they're never thirsty, especially
if it's a hot weekend, you know, because you never
know what you're gonna get in the middle of September.

Speaker 4 (06:24):
You really don't.

Speaker 1 (06:25):
I remember one year it was really cold and I go,
how could it be this cold?

Speaker 3 (06:28):
I know. So, yeah, it's handing out water or you know,
being a periodic boothsitter if the artist needs to run
and get a boy to eat, or run and use
the bathroom.

Speaker 2 (06:40):
You know. It's it's never handling money.

Speaker 3 (06:42):
It's just basically sitting in their booth and watching over
things to make sure nothing happens while they're gone.

Speaker 2 (06:47):
You know, and walking out handing out the maps.

Speaker 3 (06:50):
With all of the artists booths listed on them and
that kind of thing.

Speaker 2 (06:54):
So very simple things, but just we do.

Speaker 3 (06:57):
We do like some men to help at the setup
time on Friday and the tear down time on Sunday
because we could really use some strong arms. Sure, we
have a lot of women on the board. We also have,
you know, some more older men.

Speaker 2 (07:14):
We can use some young buff men to help us. Sure.

Speaker 4 (07:17):
Absolutely.

Speaker 1 (07:18):
And by the way, if you look at the show
notes of this podcast episode, you will see the link
is there, but it's Saint Charles Moosaics dot Org.

Speaker 4 (07:27):
You're also going to see things like what you've got
going on.

Speaker 1 (07:30):
I've got the children's village with creation station along with
somebody so near and dear. I missed her so much,
Mary Hedeger's Memorial Art Shop for Kids.

Speaker 3 (07:40):
Talk about that. So yeah, we named it after Mary.
We miss her a lot too. She was just so
integral and putting everything together for Mosaics for so many
years before us, you know, as far as the pr
and marketing went.

Speaker 2 (07:55):
Anyway.

Speaker 3 (07:56):
The Memorial Art Shop for Kids is made up of
donations from all of the artists that are in the show,
and we put these donations up and price them in
either five or ten dollars, which is way below what
they're valued at WOW. And then allow children fourteen and
under to come into the tent without their parents so

(08:18):
that they can, yeah, so they can pick what speaks
to them. And I mean we'll still let parents stand
outside and try and point to things that they want
their kids to grab, and we're like, no, you're not
supposed to do that. Them be their own, you know,
form of self expression. And then we let them know
where that artist's booth is so that they can go
down and talk to the artists and tell them they

(08:38):
bought their piece and learn more about it with their parents.

Speaker 2 (08:41):
So, I mean, it's just a really.

Speaker 3 (08:43):
Cool way to help encourage art loving from the kids' standpoint.

Speaker 1 (08:48):
You know, that is absolutely brilliant. I love it. And
before we get to the pet pavilion, I know you
have live music, we.

Speaker 3 (08:56):
Do, yeah, So there is live music throughout the festival.
Of course, there's little breaks here and there for them
to tear down and set up too, because the different
groups have their different equipment. But we have two stages,
one on the north end and one kind of in
the center of the festival. And then sometimes we have
you know, people just playing on the sidewalk too down there.

Speaker 4 (09:18):
But they call them buster. Don't become buskers. Buskers, I think, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
I love that you let them do that. That's fantastic.

Speaker 1 (09:25):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (09:25):
I mean as long as they're not you know, hindering
the festival in anyway, or being too loud or anything
like that.

Speaker 2 (09:30):
We we'd love you know, encouraging that too.

Speaker 3 (09:33):
So it's it's yeah, it's a great festival for everyone
if people love pets. It's kind of a dog parade
down there because so many people walk their dogs along
main street.

Speaker 2 (09:45):
What is put out water bowls?

Speaker 4 (09:48):
Oh they do. I've noticed that they put out the water.
So yeah, let's get to that. That artist for adoption,
what is that exactly in the pet pavilion, So.

Speaker 3 (09:56):
Stray paws adoptables out here in Saint Peter's.

Speaker 2 (10:00):
They will actually be exhibiting there.

Speaker 3 (10:01):
We have a big tent with or for them down
by the Children's Village, and they bring adaptable dogs and
cats to the festival so that people can apply and
meet these you know, sometimes they're puppies, sometimes they're older.
But I mean last year we had a lady that
came by and she met one of the older dogs
and spent hours with this dog and ended up adopting her.

(10:25):
So it's just you know, anytime we see that, we
love it. I'm very into two animal rescue, so it
makes me happy anytime I see one get a new home.

Speaker 4 (10:35):
I'd love that you're doing that as well as if
you're not doing everything else. I mean, that's amazing.

Speaker 1 (10:40):
And just so if you're listening this, you're going I've
never been, or maybe you have been. Maybe you've been
and you haven't walked the entire thing. That's why I'm
glad you have more than one day because you can
go like where the first area is, where the music is,
you need to go even pass that for there is
it's long.

Speaker 4 (10:58):
I mean, you got a lot.

Speaker 3 (11:00):
And we do have shuttles that we've got, like the
long golf carts that will run people back down the
street if you know, if they've walked the whole thing
and they're tired, they just need to flag one of
us down and we'll give them a ride. So you know,
don't be afraid to walk the whole festival and you're
going to run out of energy because well, we'll help
you out on that part of it. But we've got oh,

(11:21):
I think one hundred and three artists right now, and
that number might change a little bit before we actually
reach it, but it you know, there's a lot of
great art and these artists count on these festivals to
make their living. And so I mean it's a great
time to do your Christmas shopping or if you've got
birthdays coming up. I mean, there's just so many great
ideas for gifts down there.

Speaker 1 (11:43):
A lot of jewelry too. There's a lot of jewelry there,
great gifts. There's a lot of functional art which I
absolutely love. Clocks I've noticed. I mean, just think you're
right perfect place Christmas lamps, yeah, pottery.

Speaker 2 (11:56):
That you can actually use, you know.

Speaker 3 (11:58):
I think a couple of years ago I bought my
my son and daughter in law for Christmas, like these
sushi bowls with the child like a place to hold
the chopsticks.

Speaker 2 (12:07):
They were really cool, you know. So there's just all.

Speaker 3 (12:10):
Kinds of stuff that you can think of for gift
ideas too. So encourage people to go down and just
think about Christmas and you know, and what you can
buy from an artist and that it's a one of
a kind piece usually and.

Speaker 2 (12:23):
Something really unique you can give to someone.

Speaker 1 (12:25):
So and if you want to see it, if you
go to again Saint Charles Mosaics dot org, which again
that link will be down there, you can see some
of the artists and they're everything. I mean, I'm looking going,
oh my goodness, there's hats, there's yeah, I mean, there's
so many things that I think I'm probably gonna end
up getting all of my Christmas gifts from there.

Speaker 2 (12:49):
That's a good way to go.

Speaker 1 (12:51):
If you know somebody who likes, like, for example, vintage airplanes.
I'm looking at Nick Ventimiglia and he's got this vintage airplane.
I don't know if it's I think it's photography. Yeah,
it's gorgeous. Like, Okay, I know somebody who I want
that for cool.

Speaker 4 (13:07):
From Martha's Ville, Missouri. I don't know. But these are
the kinds of things you can kind of look ahead
and go, okay, oh, I definitely want one of that.

Speaker 1 (13:15):
But yeah, I just I love everything about what you
guys are doing and any.

Speaker 4 (13:20):
Other things that I'm missing.

Speaker 2 (13:22):
Oh, just anybody that's coming with kids.

Speaker 3 (13:24):
If you want to take advantage of the kid activities there.
We only run those on Saturday and Sunday from eleven
to four, so that's the time to bring your kids,
you know. The rest of the time we have everything
else open, but those booths will only be open during
that time.

Speaker 1 (13:43):
So actually Friday when you open late afternoon, and I
think that would be a great date night.

Speaker 2 (13:48):
Yes, four to nine. We do have our wine.

Speaker 3 (13:51):
Booths, which we'll also have a few other drinks other
than wine, but we do have our I should call
them the adult beverage booths, so you can walk street
with an adult beverage too.

Speaker 4 (14:02):
Oh that's nice.

Speaker 2 (14:03):
That's good to know.

Speaker 4 (14:04):
I like that.

Speaker 3 (14:05):
And then of course I've got all the great restaurants
down there, so yes, we don't bring in food. We
just let people, you know, go to all the great
restaurants that are available. And then you've got all the
shops too, and some of the shops run specials during
the times of the festivals just to try and you know,
stay in the in the loop with all the people
that are down there.

Speaker 4 (14:25):
So I love that. I love everything you're doing.

Speaker 1 (14:28):
And by the way, I want to just just re
emphasize that it is free, because, like you said, a
lot of art festivals are not free. And also if
you think there's not enough parking, you will be shocked
at how much parking is available.

Speaker 4 (14:41):
There's two huge lots.

Speaker 1 (14:43):
You don't have to park on the street all the time.
There's so many of the two big ones I know of,
but there's even more.

Speaker 3 (14:48):
Yeah, and then the parking garage with City Hall during
the weekend you can park in there for free.

Speaker 2 (14:53):
So oh, I didn't know that.

Speaker 1 (14:54):
And do they have I know one year, a couple
of years they had the boy Scouts were helping us
out park which was fann tastic too.

Speaker 3 (15:01):
Yeah, I don't know if they're going to be down
there this year or not. So they've been on and
off as far as one. They've had lots, so I
don't I don't know if they'll be working it or not.
But yeah, there's tons of free parking and you know
along the streets and then of course all those lots,
so hopefully everybody will find their spot, and hopefully we'll
have perfect weather.

Speaker 5 (15:19):
And will and even if control you can't control it,
but that, you know what, support the artists, especially if
it rains or if it's really hot, because then they
really need it.

Speaker 4 (15:30):
And also are you going to have the horse and
buggies going up and down?

Speaker 2 (15:33):
Too? No?

Speaker 1 (15:34):
No, okay, so yeah, because I know some people go, oh,
just the golf carts.

Speaker 4 (15:39):
Okay.

Speaker 1 (15:40):
So there's plenty of walking room, plenty of walking room.
And I love that the stores are all going to
be open. So this is something local want, something I
just absolutely love.

Speaker 4 (15:48):
Again.

Speaker 1 (15:49):
It's the Mosaics Fine Art Festival, September thirteenth, fourteenth, I say,
save all three days. Yes, Melinda, You're wonderful, Thank you
so much. And by the way, can they get i
know online which I'm looking right now. Can they get
that little brochure ahead of time or do they just
wait till the till the weekend?

Speaker 2 (16:08):
Oh, just wait until the weekend.

Speaker 3 (16:09):
Well, we'll be handing them out, you know, at both
ends and at the info booth, and people will be
walking the streets to hand them out too, So yeah,
they can grab one while they're there. But all the
information is out on our website, so they can get
all of that out there, and we are updating all
the artist information out there too.

Speaker 2 (16:26):
But yep, only a couple of weeks away.

Speaker 4 (16:28):
So excited.

Speaker 2 (16:29):
I hope they put it on their calendar.

Speaker 1 (16:32):
Most definitely they should. It's it's a must go to.
And again, thank you so much. We have such thank you,
we have such a beautiful place in Main Street Saint Charles.
We all time favorite places to go to and this
is one of my favorites.

Speaker 4 (16:45):
So make sure you go.

Speaker 2 (16:47):
Thank you so much for having me on.
