Speaker 3 (01:05):
Time, get the second doll and ke queen bangs.
Speaker 6 (01:12):
Wags the great Mike Lang. Hey, everybody, it's tank And
it has been a couple rough days in Pittsburgh with
the passing of Mike Lang. When the ancient Greeks buried,
(01:37):
they're dead, a friend, a relative would get up to
speak first, and he would pose the question to the
people at the funeral, did this.
Speaker 7 (01:55):
Man live with passion?
Speaker 6 (02:01):
Did this man live with passion? And he would go
on to extol the virtues of said warrior, philosopher, poet, politician,
everyday average Greek citizen, did this man.
Speaker 7 (02:20):
Live with passion?
Speaker 6 (02:25):
To understand the depth and breadth of that question, think
of it in respect to your own life. When you
pass man, woman, will somebody be able to stand up
at your gathering of remembrance and say, did he live
(02:48):
with passion? Only you know that answer. I know mine,
and it is a resounding yes. I have grabbed the
bull by the horns. I have literally swam across the
Potomac River in the middle of the night. I have
swam with sharks knowing they were in the water at
(03:11):
dusk in Mexico. Whether that's passion or insanity. It was
my to doings. Mike Lang lived his life with passion,
passion for the Pittsburgh Penguins, but passion for life as well.
(03:36):
You're listening to Tank Tantlinger, let's talk pens. I'm gonna
tell you two stories. And these aren't on the ice
Penguin stories. They're not about Mike Lang. Many, many years ago,
I was on the golf committee for the Pittsburgh Children's Home, wonderful,
(03:58):
long standing institut here in Pittsburgh that helps with prenatal
care and at risk birthed children. Like all charities, we
had a annual fundraiser for the golf event, and Mike
Lang lent his celebrity, his celebrity. We're talking late nineties here,
(04:21):
when the Pens were really hot. Lent his celebrity as
the face of the event to help raise money. He
not only did that, but he actually cared about helping
and raising important funds. I remember Mike would go over
(04:42):
and above. And if you've ever been to a celebrity
golf auction or a golf tournament to raise fundans for charities,
you know you may have an Arnold Palmer signed picture.
You may have a Jack Nicholas Putter, he signed. In
the case of Mike Lang, he went to Great Stens
to get us. And you can only imagine the items
(05:06):
that he brought.
Speaker 7 (05:10):
And gave and took the time to get.
Speaker 6 (05:12):
I mean to get signatures from Mario, Kevin Stevens Barrasso.
Took time out of his day, took time his time,
which was precious. Did Mike Lang live with passion? Absolutely?
(05:35):
The second Mike Lang story I want to tell you
is a personal story directly, directly elbow to elbow, drinking
a few beverages. One night, many years ago, there was
a wonderful well nightclub bar music venue here in Pitts
(06:00):
were called.
Speaker 7 (06:00):
The Decade, The Decade.
Speaker 6 (06:03):
If you don't know about it, google it, it'll come up.
It was a dive bar dve here in Pittsburgh, but
more so in the heart of Oakland, where the University
of Pittsburgh is.
Speaker 7 (06:19):
Loved. The Decade.
Speaker 6 (06:21):
One of my favorite sayings ever came off.
Speaker 7 (06:24):
The bathroom wall.
Speaker 6 (06:26):
The bathroom wall at the Decade. It was a long
standing scribbling that while others won't passed and were taped
over or whatever, this stood for a long time and
it quite simply said.
Speaker 7 (06:41):
In the men's bathroom.
Speaker 6 (06:43):
If you're gonna walk on thin ice, you might as
well dance.
Speaker 7 (06:49):
One of my favorites.
Speaker 6 (06:51):
If you're gonna walk on thin ice, baby, you might
as well dance.
Speaker 7 (06:59):
Love that quo. The decade was.
Speaker 6 (07:02):
An incredible, incredible venue for music, blues music. I love
blues music. I've seen BB King when he was with
us more times than I know. Muddy Waters, the Blues
Brothers album, John Lee Hooker, you name it. Mike Lang
(07:24):
was a blues fan as well, and you would see
Mike all over town at the blues venue.
Speaker 7 (07:32):
There's Mike Lang.
Speaker 6 (07:35):
Just sitting there smoking a cigarette, sipping his drink, and
he was always gracious to any fan. Psburgers are good,
though we don't bother people. I don't know about now
with like one of the local sports guys told me
he well too. Actually, you know, if one more person
comes up to me and says, can I get a selfie?
(07:58):
Back in the day, you kind of didn't bother like
if you saw Myron out or Mike langout. But anyway,
many moons ago one World Champion Heavy eight of the
World Mike Tyson fought a nobody from Columbus, Ohio named
(08:21):
Buster Douglas. The fight was not held here in the
United States of America. It was in Japan, you know,
that hotbed for boxing, Tokyo, Japan.
Speaker 4 (08:35):
Uh huh.
Speaker 6 (08:39):
By the way, the odds on the fight were eighty
to one that Douglas would win. Not any of you
that gamble would take that bet for ten bucks. Won't
you think of the return on ten Dallas at eighty
to one or if you were let's just say unscrupulous
(09:02):
like Don King, and the odds were eighty to one,
and somehow, through your sicophants and minions, you were able
to put ten million dollars worth of bets out globally
on eighty to one betting against your fighter, Mike Tyson
(09:23):
that he would lose against Buster Douglas in that hot
bey of boxing, Tokyo, Chapan. Down guys, Tyson.
Speaker 5 (09:34):
Oh, the heavyweight champion of the world, Buster nobody to
be heard of ever again from Columbus and got fat
And it was a joke.
Speaker 6 (09:46):
Douglas. Yeah, go watch that fight if you don't know
what I'm talking about. The greatest con job ever in
the history of boxing, in my opinion, come on, eighty
to one Tokyo Tyson loses to an no buddy at
eighty to one. Don King spreads out ten million across
(10:06):
the globe via menions. I don't do math real good.
Somebody out there do dad on eighty to one, ten
million on eighty two.
Speaker 7 (10:17):
It's a lot of shackles. I loved the decade.
Speaker 6 (10:24):
If you're gonna walk on thin icehow might as well dance?
Baby Dance, Tank Dance. Hey you're listening, let's talk pens.
I'm Tank Tantlinger, reminiscent about Mike Lang. Did he live
his life with passion?
Speaker 7 (10:44):
Anyway?
Speaker 6 (10:44):
I'm in the decade a hundred years ago in Oakland,
and guess who was gonna have the fight on from Tokyo.
I don't even really remember. I think it was like
five in the afternoon than one of the best blues
bands in town, Red and Blue, Gary Baloma, I miss you, Rest.
Speaker 7 (11:02):
In peace, brother, sitting at the.
Speaker 6 (11:09):
Bar on the corner getting ready for the fight. There
were isn't too many people in there.
Speaker 7 (11:15):
It wasn't like.
Speaker 6 (11:15):
Pay per view is now. People didn't This thing was
on commercial television, which should even tell you more about
the fix was in anyway, Who pulled up the stool
beside me and said, this is even pre uh us
being on the golf committee together. In the mind, if
I sit down watching the fight Mike Lang himself, I
(11:43):
can't tell you how cool it is to sit there
and have that incredible, rich, brilliant voice of Mike Lang
not commenting and doing commentary.
Speaker 7 (11:58):
Tyson takes a left hook to the red.
Speaker 6 (12:01):
But his voice beside me as we watched that atrocity,
that con job from Tokyo when Buster Douglas knocked out
Mike Tyson. So yeah, it was so cool Mike Lang
broadcasting and commentary on the fight.
Speaker 7 (12:23):
That never was.
Speaker 6 (12:26):
There's nothing I can say about Mike Lang that hasn't
been said over the last couple of days. I feel
the sadness too. It's an end of an era. Is
I turned sixty? Real soon? Those legendary voices that embody
(12:50):
Pittsburgh Sports to me, Bob Prince, Chicken on you, my buddy,
Myron Coat, trimple YOI double YoY YoY. And now the
great Mic Lang silenced scratch my back with all hack saw.
(13:18):
Think of the image, Think of the image. Got to
see the incredible well, you know, the statue out in
front of PPG when Mario did the Magni feak. What
was at that game? Didn't hear Mike's call, but certainly
(13:40):
have heard it one hundred times since then. So Mike
Lang's passing in a town that prides itself from being
a sports town, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, got a problem with that baby.
It is sadness. I feel like an uncle's died. We
(14:02):
all do, right, Uncle Mike, that smile, that glimmer in
his eyes, We're all part of the Pittsburgh Penguins family.
We hoisted the cup with Borky when he screamed, let's
take this cup down to the river. Party All summer long,
(14:25):
we celebrated five Stanley Cups with Mike Lang in the Penguins.
He will be missed, he will be immortalized. Some are
(14:48):
talking already of a trophy of a statue at PPG.
I think much more fitting the statue than a plaque.
Let him forever be on the Mount Rushmore or Mount
Washington of sports broadcasters. I mean, Prince Cope Lang, the
(15:16):
Mount Rushmore, the Mount Washington of Pittsburgh sports broadcasters.
Speaker 7 (15:27):
A good long life did Mike have?
Speaker 6 (15:30):
We should all be so fortunate to live as long
be as cherished, be as passionate.
Speaker 7 (15:39):
As Mike Lang was.
Speaker 6 (15:43):
So as I close out this segment, I will ask
you about Mike Lang, now that he has left us.
Did this man.
Speaker 8 (15:58):
Live with passion?
Speaker 6 (16:03):
Who will speak for him?
Speaker 3 (16:12):
He puts him behind him, all off and the Penguins
and Green comes around through it in front. The Penguins
are there waiting and clear might better take off? Talpa
takes off, gets to the punk campitals in rich.
Speaker 1 (16:23):
Shon shuits and scored fs talbid.
Speaker 3 (16:30):
I might have been looking to get a pedalty there too,
but the Balkan late rush coming on the power play,
the cap said in Frighty goes off to the benchman
had the Penguins winning off Gunney Hawkin has scored on
the Penguins winning over time. Malkin offers gonna take him
into the net and the Pants win four to three
in the kitchen is close? Have Gunny Malkin with a
(16:50):
game winning goal. Penguins later the series three games to two.
Billot Pass comes to the betch My Heights Canary going
to the Penguins net and I'm.
Speaker 1 (16:58):
Going stop by furry Rockie. What a club say? He
came a lot of moods but Flurry kept that wicking please.
Speaker 3 (17:05):
On the left hand up and he pulls it in
and the Penguins pray man Old Batchkins triump, giving the Capitals.
Speaker 4 (17:11):
A one on.
Speaker 3 (17:11):
They laid a tank, gets it around the Crosby steers
it over the marking on the pill hands at the
gunjar center point for the Penguins, shoots it in front.
Here's Robbie, he shouts at Scars Shitney. Crosby gives up, Penguins,
I won nothing, laid oh By shame a drink and
get his dog. One two Rosby the recipent of another
(17:32):
bounce but another goal. Mike Crosby went in three feet
of the Capitol's goal.
Speaker 8 (17:37):
H Well the play by Sergei Gaunchar getting.
Speaker 9 (17:40):
The puck away quick and he was able to catch
the Caps before they were able to set up their
box and get him positioned af getting Monking from the
half wall gets it the gauntra at the center point.
Speaker 8 (17:50):
Off the back leg.
Speaker 10 (17:52):
It's a little half slap shot that goes off a.
Speaker 9 (17:54):
Stick of the washing the Capitals forward right the Sydney Crosby,
it's who's so good with his is able to kick.
Speaker 8 (18:01):
It from his right skate up to a stick and
pop them in net. What nothing pins.
Speaker 4 (18:06):
Hearing the Penguins Andy, They just scored again.
Speaker 3 (18:08):
Ferryman Adams his first ever NHL playoff goal. Greig Adams
beats far loom Off and the Penguins lead two nothing.
Oh Donald needs a donut. How about this Penguin team too.
In less than a minute gets it in deep with
the Penguins before he will let it go behind the
net for Mark Eaton. He'll go to fully pusha and
(18:28):
down the ice that goes off the stick of Adams
will be icy.
Speaker 4 (18:31):
No, it goes with two seconds ago.
Speaker 3 (18:33):
And the Pittsburgh Penguins have defeated the Washington Capitals in
Game seven of their best of seven series. The Penguins
win the series four games to three, and they win
here tonight it's the Penguin six and the Capitals two.
And now the respected teams will go to their goaltenders
and we will have the traditional handshake here, Borkie.
Speaker 4 (18:56):
This was an incredible series with these two clubs.
Speaker 3 (18:59):
Great individual shows, great team performances by both teams.
Speaker 4 (19:04):
Tonight the Penguins were the better team and they win
the series.
Speaker 3 (19:08):
Man cooks right there, full slamper on the way. That
hit Mallin and uh goes to the far wing. The
Penguins get it down behind on that to Kennedy comes
out in front.
Speaker 4 (19:16):
Now Maukin fix it up.
Speaker 3 (19:18):
He foiled that, but he throws them behind board. Had
the Penguins and a tuna one wade. Oh, I've seen
Matt fist before, and Kenny Malkin kind of nowhere to
find the bucket the feet of cayboard. The Penguin's lead
two to one. Cooners of the Penguins looking up. What's
he gonna do with it? Shoot her towards and that
I'm the fan rebound falking. Hey, Southside Stars have Kenny walking,
(19:45):
run in front, head up pick wins.
Speaker 1 (19:47):
Every game the lead it's five four Pittsburgh. Oh look out, Colorado.
Speaker 4 (19:53):
Here's walking behind the goal. Turns around, comes out back INChO.
Speaker 3 (19:56):
Ha seltic stars and came for just lost his slicker,
lifeless on a full time walkin.
Speaker 1 (20:05):
The Penguins say six to four, it's the eighth te four.
Speaker 4 (20:10):
Seventy line rows me back to the tank.
Speaker 3 (20:13):
Gotta look and shoot it quickly does off the stick
of Osgod back around on the near corner.
Speaker 4 (20:18):
Malkin to the Penguins.
Speaker 3 (20:19):
What it is Malcolin center point of Gauntar half slapper
stout the shot, Sir day Guntar and love Pittsburgh Penguins.
Speaker 1 (20:31):
Half the way waited two oh, big cow cack Sir
k Gunzar with the go ahead goal.
Speaker 3 (20:43):
On to brooks Orpik and the Penguins trying to change
on the move with Orpie gets centerized and drills a
dude red Wings territory. Stewart back defensively gave it away,
comes in front of Quicksot's card. Talbot hate scords. Look
at the Penguins the opening goal, how getting the pass,
laying Grandma?
Speaker 1 (20:58):
The pingo game is ready in their roll.
Speaker 3 (21:01):
Max Talmot gives the Penguins the first goal, wants Kennedy
to take possession. He'll go to Siskadeeri get bumped on
the boards by Draper buck Free though off the near
saying here comes Talbot back again with Kennedy open in
the right side, Talbot suits, Hey stars, Max Talbot be
scolting your rows good like a reddy mule, and the Penguins.
Speaker 4 (21:22):
Take a two nothing lead. Talmot his second.
Speaker 3 (21:26):
Orky, you know what my thoughts are on and you're
just dropping the putt because you take it to lay
a game. Generally it's okay, what's the difference for the
time the clock ticks down will be two seconds left.
They drop it and they got to the right point.
Here's for falsky shooting. Never got through loose wuck. Now
to the newt S they made rebound. Oh big say
by free and it is that's it. The Pittsburgh Penguins
have won this hockey game.
Speaker 4 (21:47):
The Penguins have won the Stanley Cup.
Speaker 3 (21:50):
And Lord Stanley scratched their names on your fabled Cup.
The Pittsburgh Penguins are Stanley.
Speaker 1 (21:57):
Cup champions two thousand.
Speaker 3 (22:00):
Nine, and they mob goaltender Flurry. The Penguins hold on
the Wings had one last chance on the net. Flurry
robbed them at the last second. And the Penguins have
done to Detroit what the Red Wings did in Pittsburgh
last year. And that's when in the wings own building,
(22:20):
the Penguins, jumping for joy obviously, have just surrounded their goaltender.
They stormed off the bench and the pinch is just
explosive down there as the Penguins win a Stanley Cup
for the first time since nineteen ninety two.
Speaker 9 (22:35):
What is a hockey game. What a hockey game. And
the Penguins, aren't it Mikey. They did all the little
things in this game. They took the body and the bounces.
Marc Andre Fleury was unbelievable on this hockey game. He
makes two huge says at the very end to preserved
the two to one lead and the Penguins It's coming home, baby,
(22:57):
The Stanley Cup is coming.
Speaker 3 (22:58):
Home, big hal Gill with his arms around teammate Pascal
de Pui. You just have to know the sheer emotion
of winning a Stanley Cup and what it's all about
unless you have been there and been around it.
Speaker 4 (23:13):
And I think more importantly that you.
Speaker 3 (23:16):
Folks know that that that when you it isn't just
accumulation of a playoff series. It is an entire year
of living basically with one another from the start of
the season until the very end, one hundred and six
games and you've become part of a family.
Speaker 4 (23:36):
You really do.
Speaker 3 (23:37):
And for the Penguins and this squad, certainly, the rewards
have been magnificent.
Speaker 4 (23:43):
What a story.
Speaker 3 (23:44):
Just there's so many side stories to it Workie that
it's just so hard to really bring them all to
the people. But the Penguins win it two to one,
back to back two to one wins, and they hold
on and they have done something. Or they mentioned last night,
worky that nobody in the world thought that this team
and that's win four up five against the defending champions,
and they did it.
Speaker 8 (24:05):
And the greatest thing in sports is happening right now,
Mike yep. The handshake.
Speaker 3 (24:09):
The handshakes here Tommy Fitzgerald, a Cup winner and the
Fins led by Sydney Crosby who had only one ship
in this third period after being hurt.
Speaker 4 (24:19):
In the second. The continuing handshakes.
Speaker 3 (24:22):
Chris Osgood and the last man for the Wings, congratulated
by brooks Orpik and Sergei Gonchar as they come to
the line. But certainly a very special moment for everybody
as the Pins have won the Stanley Cup. I don't
know how else to describe it to you except that
it is just pure excitement on the ice for the Penguins,
(24:44):
and as I said, last year, the Wings experienced the
same thing. On the plus side, this year their fans
get to watch them lose the Cup for the first
time since nineteen seventy one. The home team hasn't won
the Stanley Cup in the seventh game. Those numbers are
made to be broken. They are, I mean, those long
streaks and yes we are family from nineteen seventy nine.
(25:05):
Let's give the Pirates a little credit too, because they
were the last team to win.
Speaker 4 (25:10):
A seventh game on the road. They won the World Series.
Speaker 8 (25:12):
Well, the numbers just there's flying everywhere.
Speaker 9 (25:15):
This is the eighty seventh playoff game of the two
thousand and nine playoffs. Of course, Cidney Crowfe wars number
eighty seven. And the last team that won on the
road in the game seven, that mont.
Speaker 8 (25:26):
Yalwk Canadian team. Al mcdeal was the head coach of
that team.
Speaker 10 (25:31):
He's from Sydney, Nova, Scotia.
Speaker 8 (25:33):
Go figure.
Speaker 4 (25:34):
One last thought.
Speaker 3 (25:35):
The man that led the Penguins of the first Stanley Cup,
madra Bob Johnson, was hired on this day in nineteen
ninety by Craig Patrick and the Pittsburgh Penguins on June twelfth,
an anniversary. And if there is such a thing as
the hockey gods, yes there are. He looks down tonight
(25:56):
and he is saying to everybody, it is a great
day for hockey. The congratulatory hugs here by the Penguin players.
Shortly there will be interviews going on on the ice
and of course the entire celebration being videoed, obviously for posterity.
(26:19):
I think a really classy move here by the Red
Wings and watching them come over to congratulate all the referees,
for the two referees and the linesman for the work
that they did. The Red Wings staff came behind us
workI and all of them tapped us on the back.
Speaker 4 (26:32):
As if to say, you know, good job. And I
just think it's a remarkable story for the Pens.
Speaker 8 (26:36):
It really is the first class here in Detroit.
Speaker 9 (26:38):
Class organization. Their fans are classy. You can see why
they've won them as many cups as they have. But
guess what, it's our turn.
Speaker 3 (26:50):
So the Penguins win the Stanley Cup. That's the news
heard around the world. And now mister Gary Bettman will
step the center eyes. Do we have access to pick
him up?
Speaker 10 (26:59):
Yes we do, player con Smith.
Speaker 11 (27:03):
Let's congratulate two terrific teams on a great Stanley Cup final,
the Pittsburgh Penguins under Detroit Red Wings.
Speaker 8 (27:13):
The winner of the Con Smikee Trophy is a Guinea Maukin.
Speaker 4 (27:19):
You have Guinny Maukins the con Smike winner.
Speaker 3 (27:22):
He had more points than any player in this playoffs
and he has been awarded the con Smike Trophy.
Speaker 4 (27:32):
The magneta Gorse native except the trophy. Standing with a
commissioner with the National Hockey League, Gary Bettman.
Speaker 9 (27:41):
Wasn't ironic because mom and dad are not here, Mike.
They were superstitious. They came to the previous three games
here at the Joe. They said, we're staying home. Go
get it, Gino, and it worked.
Speaker 4 (27:53):
He had worked.
Speaker 3 (27:54):
Next up, as you well know, the Stanley Cup will
be presented and it is and ready to go.
Speaker 4 (28:02):
And as you well know too, the man that.
Speaker 3 (28:04):
Receives the cup first will be the captain of the Penguin,
Sidney Crosby. I asked him today, would you have a
trouble picking that thing up? I know after tonight getting hurt,
he might have a little problem. His idol get a
little support.
Speaker 9 (28:17):
That was a great interview he did with about his
idol Steve Eisman, who just walked behind us, shook our
hand with him in the building. Here Sidney gets to
win his first Stanley Cup with his idol watching over.
Speaker 3 (28:30):
Yeah, and amazingly so it really is, and I mean
all the ingredients were here, and he talked about his
leadership and the qualities that he had, and so now
Sidney's name will be on the cup. Look at Jordan Stall,
just twenty years of age on the ice, and then
he's the king of the Stall Brothers for the summer.
Speaker 9 (28:47):
And another ironic moment, his brother Eric in two thousand
and six won his Stanley Cup in a game seven.
Speaker 3 (28:53):
Also Eddie Johnson, who hadn't won a cup since night.
All right, here comes the announcement. Here on the Stanley Cup.
It'll be presented to the Pittsburgh Penguins who are still
remaining on the ice. The red wings them left obviously,
and the cup is being ushered out down the red carpet.
It'll be placed on a table and the commissioner again
(29:16):
will step forward, ram the microphone and let us all know.
Speaker 4 (29:23):
Who the champions are of two thousand and nine.
Speaker 11 (29:26):
It takes a great champion to be the great champion.
Congratulations to the Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Ray Ziero, coach
Dan Wilsma, and the entire coaching staff, Mary o Lemieux
and Ron Burkell for saving the Pittsburgh Penguins and bringing
(29:48):
them to this championship day.
Speaker 8 (29:50):
And congratulations to the great fans in Pittsburgh.
Speaker 4 (29:53):
For all of your support.
Speaker 11 (29:55):
Sydney Crosby, you will be the youngest captain to hoist
Stanley Cuff for graduation.
Speaker 4 (30:05):
Twenty one years of age.
Speaker 3 (30:06):
Sidney Crosby will take the cup from Gary Bettman. He
has it, poses for a picture now, but the next
moment he will have it up and here it is
about his head and pens respond to Sidney Crosby, who
kisses the cup and has his teammates surrounding him. At
the moment the Stanley Cup returns to Pittsburgh the greatest
(30:28):
moment in your life, and Crosby will go for escape.
There are no wires on the ice like there were
a year ago, or they couldn't hardly skate with it.
Crosby back pedals, has it over his head and he'll
look for someone now to pass the two The veteran
and Bill Garon is the first man to take it
in over his head, his second cup, as he skates
(30:50):
with it.
Speaker 9 (30:50):
In fourteen years since he won his last ninety five
with the New Jersey Devils.
Speaker 4 (30:57):
Morky, where were you in the pecking order when you
got the up the first time.
Speaker 8 (31:00):
Do you remember I was down there, Mike for you.
I was down the row.
Speaker 3 (31:03):
Surge gonejars, knucks and the Pens defenseman had never won
a championship and talking to him, this is his first
and it's a Stanley Cup championship. Burro Stan wants to
hold that big prize, the trophy, and he's got it now.
The Penguin winger who came in and filled in admirably,
(31:24):
Peter Sakora, is on the ice. He wants that buck
second time for him to hold it. He's got it
above his head and he is thrilled to death as
he skates with a puck.
Speaker 9 (31:33):
Out there with a broken foot right now, and boy
is he happy and beg hal.
Speaker 3 (31:37):
Gil will put the trophy above his head and almost
touches the scoreboard at six seven. You know that's got
to be a thrill for that Massachusetts native.
Speaker 8 (31:46):
Absolutely all right.
Speaker 4 (31:51):
The stories are just you know, continual here as it is.
Speaker 3 (31:54):
Filip Pouchet with the opportunity to hold it, and Rouse
Line fled a tank on no stranger to it.
Speaker 4 (32:01):
He won one with Tampa bay Nikiev Nadye and he.
Speaker 8 (32:06):
Got the Penguins to play rusty hockey. They called it.
That was a certain style, a certain playoff style.
Speaker 3 (32:13):
And Craig Adams, we'll take that. Stanley cupp his second
one one with Carolina a couple of years ago. Mark
Eat what a story, Max Talbott, No, he didn't.
Speaker 4 (32:28):
Get it yet. Here's Mark Andrey Fleury with it.
Speaker 3 (32:31):
He goes for a skate in the Pittsburgh fans that
are here in this building appreciating all. Mark Andrey Fleury,
you talk about a guy that survived it all. When
I say when we first started Borkie at the start
of the playoffs, the only way Florrie's going to get
the critics off his back is my winning a Stanley Cup. Well,
he has done it absolutely. Talbott went for escape. Now
(32:52):
it will come to him. Get any Malkin and a
consmith wrote winner kisses the cup rings at the Jordan Stall.
What a fabulous series he had against Detroit.
Speaker 9 (33:05):
They ain't meant to that, And what a game he
had tonight. He was monstrous in his own zone.
Speaker 4 (33:11):
The six foot four center Riceman.
Speaker 3 (33:17):
Any other players that will get a chance to handle
it here include Eric Goddard did not play in the playoffs,
but a very integral part. Just how valuable was he
The Penguins as a team voted him their Players player.
Speaker 8 (33:28):
That's awesome.
Speaker 9 (33:28):
If he has his gear on, put this full gear on,
even though he didn't dress for this game, that's awesome.
Speaker 3 (33:34):
And now it's Chris Latang and he played for one
reason for this whole playoff series, for his buddy.
Speaker 9 (33:40):
Luke purda On who passed away last year. On May
the twenty ninth.
Speaker 3 (33:45):
Mike Yo and Jill monass the coaches for the Pens.
They all get an opportunity to hold it up. What
a thrilling moment it is for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Sidney
Crosby's father was down on the ice too and just
saw him, Troy coming to give us son a beg hug.
As we said, so many stories that have developed here,
(34:07):
and the Penguins obviously thrilled, the fans are thrilled, and
it'll be just an unbelievable night in the city of Pittsburgh.
It has been a great Ron Gorkie. Twenty four games
it took for the Penguins. That's a possible twenty four
out of a possible twenty eight that's a lot of hockey. Yeah,
and the Red Wings played one last twenty three. But
(34:30):
I think you'd agree with me that the comeback this
club showed, being down two games to none as they
did against the Capitals is almost astonishing. But they did it,
and they won four or five against the champs too
and end up winning winning the whole thing. Okay, thanks Joey,
Joe mcaltty, longtime friend and a former player in the league,
(34:52):
coming by to give us a little thank you and
congratulations as the Penns won. So when we come back,
we'll take a look at the three stars of this
game tonight and our play of the game, and we'll
have that for you in just a moment right here
on the Penguins Hockey Network presented.
Speaker 4 (35:07):

Speaker 8 (36:32):
Three Lucky number thirteen.
Speaker 9 (36:34):
Nick Beanino gobbles up a loose puck in the blue paint.
It was a tremendous pass by Phil Kessel to find
Carl Haglin.
Speaker 4 (36:43):
In the slot.
Speaker 9 (36:43):
Haglin's original shot that stopped by Holping and on the
spot is Nick Beanino the shoveling.
Speaker 10 (36:50):
I need more.
Speaker 3 (36:51):
Banino wants me not going to be to a stick
and comes back to doing it now on to rush
to just enter the pictures into the Tampa zone and
goes to Rusby. He shot the start, senday find me

Forty second in into the overtime period and eighty seven

Speaker 3 (37:25):
Russ gets to it, got through behind headman going to

given the rebound two blue they have put that buck in,
Bryan Tubalan, we'll get the goal and the Penguins I
believe in taking the way our great balls of fire

Speaker 4 (37:41):
Pudding was going to his point dead, but hey, get front,

Speaker 1 (37:45):
Ferndo't shoot the saal Vanino games. It's personally sad and

Speaker 4 (37:54):
Jones just lost his liquor.
Speaker 3 (37:56):
Lightless Penglin three saddles in with two thirty three left.
Speaker 4 (38:03):
Here's the tang after the face off and the Penguin's
ham it goes over down the.
Speaker 1 (38:06):

Speaker 3 (38:25):
And Doomlin Carousy Doomelin back together, steer it up out
of aninopen heo to the left side over to Sheery
enters the San Jose. Saul comes near corner around the
boards and the end boards and the right point he
goes the Shultz left side of Duomlan a slipper store.
Speaker 1 (38:42):
Brian took them at a go and the pants. I'm
taking a one nothing lead.
Speaker 3 (38:47):
Oh that makes you want to see a silly seal
slide sideways and saus aledo. Penguins lead the game one
not lead, and with it is Cheery to the left
point on the time make a shot, circling back, skating
brilliantly turning back with the buck going to the goal
and goes behind on I throw it in front for
the conquest.
Speaker 4 (39:06):
Can't get a crossby mood of a tank shot.
Speaker 3 (39:08):
Score crisle fax it off Martin Jones on the setup
from Crosby and the Penguins take the lead two to one. Oh,
get that dog off my lawn. Wa a play by
Crosby and water play by the tang the spearhead the attack.
Speaker 10 (39:26):
Oh my goodness, gracious, the penguin's in.
Speaker 3 (39:28):
There's the tang again. But he played it right to
a shark on the right point, Burns left side. Last,
he gonna shoot it, blocked by Crosby, sends it up
to hork Quest cross the center red empty nad puts
it in.
Speaker 1 (39:44):
Patrick horn Quist.
Speaker 3 (39:45):
With a minute two to go, get sent empy neck
Coal and the Penguins lead this game three to one,
and he has spiling like a butcher dog.
Speaker 10 (39:56):
Penguins on the bench right now are like eight year
old kids.
Speaker 4 (39:59):
That's all right, it's awesome.
Speaker 3 (40:02):
They're waiting for the uh. They're all like the eighth
Greek picnic. Drop of the buck, classic shooting it knockdown.
Cosby's got it, play it up four seconds ago, the
Penguins have jumped over the boards. Its sales down. With
the Sharks in short headed, it's over getting the fast
laying Grandma. The pingo game is ready to roll. The
two thousand and sixties Stanley Cup champions, the Pittsburgh Pengues.
Speaker 10 (40:30):
What an effort for the Pittsburgh Penguins, locket, shots, you
name it.
Speaker 8 (40:34):
They did it all here tonight, Gloves.
Speaker 3 (40:36):
And sticks everywhere, and the Penguins in they mob Matt Murray,
the goaltender. The Penguins to a man, I've joined in
a big circle hugging one another.
Speaker 4 (40:48):
What an unbelievable moment here for the Pins and the Sharks.
Speaker 3 (40:54):
The ballion effort here in this game to try and
get back and save the season, but the Penguins were
too much. They win the series four games to two,
and they mob one another. The hugs continue. For these
players something that they will never ever forget, and the
bond between them all is something that you have to
(41:14):
experience to really understand how this will carry.
Speaker 4 (41:18):
The rest of their lives, and Mikey, the irony of
it all.
Speaker 10 (41:21):
They win the Cup in two thousand and nine, On
June the twelfth and nineteen ninety. On June the twelfth,
Bob Johnson badge of Bob Johnson is hired from the
by the Pittsburgh Penguins. And exactly six months ago to
the day, on December the twelfth, Mike Sullivan was hired
by the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Speaker 3 (41:42):
And the Penguins once again celebrating and now they'll have
to take some time. Here is the Sharks watch on.
It is not an easy thing to watch the team
celebrate winning the Stanley Cup on your home ice. And
the Sharks are showing a lot of class their waiting
for the Penguins to kind of peel away from the net,
get in these handshake life and to be a part
of it. And what a thrilling moment it has to
(42:04):
be for the entire team. But the coaching staff as well,
Mike Sullivan, Rick Tuckett, just to name two of them,
and you know the host of others that make us
so possible. Mike Bales, Jacques Martin his first Cup ever, and.
Speaker 10 (42:19):
Let's not forget about Trevor Daley on the ice, absolutely
last Gal Deputy on the ice, and all the blackases
are on the ice, and Sidney Crosby leads his group
in the handshake Lite.
Speaker 3 (42:29):
And Joe Pavelski will approach Sidney Closby. There's a great
respect in this game. They hug one another. Actually, as
the series is complete and I get Brett Burns, he's
front and center, right up there, the number two man
as they shake hands through the line. The Penguins watch
the Sharks come back and win in Pittsburgh and really
(42:51):
make a series of it. And the great goaltending by
Martin Jones. Who you know when you look at m
VP of a series, this certainly would be Martin Jones,
I think be the MVP.
Speaker 4 (43:01):
The way he played to keep the Sharks within range.
Speaker 10 (43:03):
Very similar to what Ron Hestall did in nineteen eighty
six when he was the MVP. He lost to the
Edmonton Oilers. But just an incredible performance by Martin Jones.
Speaker 3 (43:13):
And the Penguins now will finish up here with the
handshakes with the coaching staff all the way through, and
Sidney Kwansby getting his second Stanley Cup, Eric Fair his first.
What a thrill must be for him getting signing as
a free agent by the Penguins and coming to Pittsburgh.
(43:34):
Hevgheney Malkin his first and Rook the Penguins with Phil
Kessel getting his first everyone what a story Buck who
spook year for him to come out of Toronto and
from the Leaps to the Penguins and winner Stanley Cup.
Speaker 10 (43:50):
Well, there's been lots of father back and forth, or
who's gonna win the CONTs my trophy for the MVP,
but also a guy like Chris koennit's his third cup,
thirty nine year old Matt Cullen with his second cup.
Speaker 3 (44:08):
And the Pens again marching down that line Matt Murray
has already met. Here's Kenader Barton, Martin Jones and Murray
now furnishing up with Eunis Donskoy and Logan Couture.
Speaker 10 (44:23):
Well, I can ask you now, partner, but who's your
lead pony for the consmile?
Speaker 4 (44:28):
I think I would lean towards eighty seven Sidney Crosby.
Speaker 8 (44:32):
But okay, and it would make our usual wager.
Speaker 10 (44:36):
I'll take Matt Murray for that adult beverage.
Speaker 3 (44:39):
Okay, we're on, all right, And the Sharks come to
Santa Rice. Here response from their crowd eighteen Apartment seventeen
thousand and five sixty two.
Speaker 8 (44:51):
There's no doubt in the passing of hockey fans.
Speaker 10 (44:55):
This is as loud a building as I've ever heard.
Speaker 11 (45:00):
How about congratulateing the Penguins and the Sacks on a
great Stanley Cup final and.
Speaker 8 (45:08):
Your socks on a terrific season.
Speaker 11 (45:14):
The winner of the con smythe trophy, he has two
hard MVPs.
Speaker 8 (45:20):
He's now won his second Stanley Cup. It's the captain
Sidney Crosman.
Speaker 3 (45:29):
And said to kidd, no longer sidde kid at twenty eight,
we'll skate from the Penguins in all the way down
to the other end of the ice and shake the
hand of the Commissioner of the National Hockey League, Gary Bettman,
and he'll be the con Smith winner.
Speaker 4 (45:47):
For the first time in his career.
Speaker 10 (45:49):
All two primary assists in this game here setting up
La Tang and Hornquist. And now sid gets the con
Smeth Trophy and brings it back to his mates.
Speaker 3 (46:00):
We'll get a peek at it, and he takes it
immediately towards a bench and they'll take that piece of
hardware off. And now the next moment, which is the
biggest of all, the arrival of the Stanley Cup. And
(46:20):
yes they will lift it up. There won't be any
hesitation for a trophy as it was in the Western
Conference when they didn't lift it up, and the Stanley
Cup will be ushered into music.
Speaker 10 (46:34):
I might add dramatic music. Yes, Stanley Brown, the most
beautiful thirty five pounds of silver I've ever seen in
my life.
Speaker 3 (46:47):
And down on that piece of hardware is the name
of Philbourg, not once, but twice and now a lot of.
Speaker 10 (46:57):
Other Pittsburgh Penguins. Sidney Crosby, I, Kenny Mauk and Marc
Andre Fleury for the second time since two thousand and nine.
Speaker 4 (47:05):
Matt, I'm going to go down there for the third time, right.
Speaker 8 (47:10):
Years old. It's the hardest trophy in all of sports
to win.
Speaker 11 (47:16):
Congratulations tomari Olemieux, Ron Burkell, Sidney Rutherford, David Moore, House
and Mike Sullivan. The team played incredibly since he took over.
It's the captain's honor to hoist the Stanley Cup.
Speaker 8 (47:33):
Sidney Crosby, come.
Speaker 4 (47:34):
On back and soul.
Speaker 3 (47:43):
Sidney Crosby will be approaching that Stanley Cup as he
moves in once again, another handshake with.
Speaker 4 (47:49):
Gary Bettman, and the buck will be in.
Speaker 3 (47:53):
The hands of the captain. Sydney Crosby. First for a picture.
Then he has it up in a year ago. Everybody
raises their arms. He skates to set her eyes, kissing
the cup will be Sir Sidney. As he goes for
a little stroll and the penguin's watching.
Speaker 4 (48:11):
Stuff right at the red line. Then start to skate again.
Speaker 3 (48:15):
He just keeps wet on moving, skating through Penguin personnel
around at the big circle, coming back.
Speaker 4 (48:25):
To center.
Speaker 3 (48:27):
And he is looking, looking, looking, looking looking, and Trevor
Daily meets him.
Speaker 4 (48:34):
That's the coup.
Speaker 8 (48:35):
That's awesome.
Speaker 4 (48:36):
That is awesome.
Speaker 3 (48:39):
Trevor Daly, who sparked the Penguins so much in the
second half of the season, out with a broken ankle,
and guess what, folks, he's on skates and skating here,
holds it above his head and puts it back up.
When I'm sure with that ankle still bothered, no bit
has to put it down just a bit. He looks
for someone to give the bus and it's gonna go
(49:00):
to you got it number nine, Pascal du Puy in uniform.
The Mighty Kiss again. Used to be thirty five pounds.
Speaker 4 (49:14):
Oh, it's like gets heavier than that.
Speaker 8 (49:16):
It's thirty five point two.
Speaker 6 (49:19):
Right now.
Speaker 8 (49:20):
It feels like point two to put that over your
head and pass.
Speaker 10 (49:23):
Heal the weak go first, skate kid, beautiful, look at this.
Speaker 8 (49:28):
Whoever thought we'd see this?
Speaker 3 (49:32):
And Phil Castle receives it and he's gonna go and
he's moving.
Speaker 4 (49:37):
Those on and he has one happy camper as.
Speaker 3 (49:40):
He skates with a Stanley cup straight above his head
all the way in a circle.
Speaker 4 (49:45):
Boy, he is like a little kid.
Speaker 10 (49:47):
Take a couple off. Film's a it's a special special
moment here really is, as well as him kicking out
a pretty good rebound.
Speaker 4 (49:58):
Here's Angie after the face up missed the in the
rebound score.
Speaker 3 (50:00):
The Penguins to pick it up and they get the tying.
Speaker 4 (50:02):
Go by Gensel.
Speaker 3 (50:04):
He just knocked that buck off Lebronsky and the Penguins
have tied the game, getting the fast laying Grandma.
Speaker 4 (50:10):
The Bengo game is ready to roll. Number fifty nine.
Speaker 3 (50:14):
Jake Gensel, Felino checking him, passes over to daily center
point near side. The castle of the pad comes down
and shoots it, messing the neck. Ginsel gets it, shoots
in the end, gets off the backboards, gets the goal
and the pig Ones have taken the lead four to three. Oh,
Sergey Lebrosky just lost his liquor license, as it was
(50:35):
Ginzl who found the puck off the backboards and whips
it home. Penguins lead by one. Paul gets back off
the stick againstl The Jackets have the buck Anderson down
the swing. Penguin's hand shooting the buckle.
Speaker 1 (50:47):
Save rebound, Oh furry just.
Speaker 3 (50:49):
Rub Dubinski Novinski on an attempted rebound play. He just
got back at the last second and rubbed Dubinsky, who
can't believe it.
Speaker 8 (51:00):
As sick a save as you'll ever see.
Speaker 3 (51:02):
Around airsight, Crosby seems to be everywhere. Crosby around looking
for Sherry and said, he goes to the left of
the net, now goes to the right against the way
in front against the scars.
Speaker 1 (51:12):
Gettle. What's up by the beck was got up by
by Crosbie.
Speaker 4 (51:16):
What up finish by Gisel.
Speaker 3 (51:19):
This's a final Pittsburgh five, Columbus four and ladies and gentlemen.
Speaker 4 (51:24):

finish like Crosby and Getsel.
Speaker 8 (51:32):
Shaking bacon magic making what a magician? Sidney Crosby was there.
The Bets can get away with one there my keyth

Hey shouts and scars.
Speaker 3 (51:48):
Nick Banino beats Hope like a reading mule, and the
penguin three take the lay three to two number thirteen, Nick.
Speaker 8 (51:57):

Speaker 3 (52:02):
Beskin crossed, I pass over, the smith shot sorry me

Speaker 4 (52:16):
The camps girls. Look sat now knocking to the net

Speaker 3 (52:20):
The buck around on that brory stepped back. Way's gonna
be called here Fleury has he's the player to staff
the buck.
Speaker 8 (52:27):
That was unbelievable.
Speaker 10 (52:29):
Al's Noveskin lost himself at the marc ony flurry.
Speaker 8 (52:32):
Flury went flying all the way back into the net.
Speaker 9 (52:35):
Even if this buck does go into net, there's no
way they're gonna count that with the.
Speaker 10 (52:39):
Goalie interference by Oveskin the whole time Fleurie's making, says
Mikey and taking that contact by Obtskin with no stick
in his hands.
Speaker 4 (52:49):
It's base off call of floor in the circle to
the left that Mark Conway.
Speaker 8 (53:02):
Glori actually wants a little second here to.
Speaker 10 (53:04):
Reset his equipment because everything got dislodged Byovetskin watching launching
himself into the goal.
Speaker 4 (53:13):
Well, he made a spectacular safe scene through bounties, did
he ever on the first one with no stiff.
Speaker 9 (53:22):
That's just desperation and as ant athleticism by Marco mcflury.
Speaker 3 (53:29):
I'll give Creddy after evenskin dumped him and knock him
down under that and that big bruiser at two hundred
and thirty bounds, he got himself right back up.
Speaker 4 (53:38):
He won't right there. Took a check to make the

Speaker 4 (54:27):

empty atter and the Penguines have a two nothing lead.
Speaker 4 (55:56):
And ladies and gentlemen, Elvis.
Speaker 3 (55:59):
Has just left the building corner around it comes over
atturny shot towards the goal of Miss Myers. One second
to left to go and the bucking of the car
corner and it's all over. The Pittsburgh Penguins have won
the Stanley Cup. And you can tell your mom, you
can tell your paw, I'm gonna send you back to Arkansas.
Stanley Cuff Champions twenty seventeen, the Pittsburgh Penguins. They have
(56:26):
worked their way into a three to one series win
over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Some time ticks down on the
horn sounds and that'll do it. Big moment for the
Canadians and their crew, and particularly these young players the
Canadians have who would have never had the experience of
being in playoff hockey this year. If it had not
(56:49):
been for the pandemic and the opportunity to play among
the twenty four teams. For the Penguins, I would say
without question it would be a disappointing campaign for them.
But they'll have to work through it and get themselves
ready for another year of hockey.
Speaker 10 (57:08):
Yeah, coming on the heels of a sweep by the
New York Islanders last year, Mikey, I don't know which
one stings more. Yeah, it'd probably be this one here
against a team that was fifteen points behind the Penguins
twenty fourth team in the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (57:25):
And all I can say, BORGI is that's why we
play them.
Speaker 4 (57:29):
Yeah, it really is.
Speaker 3 (57:30):
I mean, you've got to realize it's a professional team.
On the other side, they're going to play their hearts
out every time you get into first series.
Speaker 4 (57:37):
You know what it's like.
Speaker 3 (57:38):
You played enough of them. Now every team is sky
high and win the Stanley Cup. And those first series
are so tough, and Carrie Price and Tristan Jarry converge
its center on the so called handshake, arm bunch or
fist punch. But it is a conclusion to the year
(58:00):
for the Pittsburgh Banguards, and one I'm sure they never
thought would would be.
Speaker 10 (58:05):
They'd be in this situation now as a healthy bunch Mikey,
not to get Jake Denzel back healthy, not to have
the depth, the speed, the youth in their lineup, The
way this team was constructed, the architect Jimmy Rutherford, and
the links that this organization has gone with Mary Lemieux
and Ron Berkel basically opening up the checkbook and say
(58:27):
do what you have to do. Let's bring another championship
back to Pittsburgh. To go out like this, Who boy,
It's going to take a while to get over this one.
