Speaker 2 (00:38):
Huddle up, Steelers Nation, It's tight for Let's talk Steelers. Man,
old man, Winter came out of nowhere. I kept telling
my buddies in October. Remember October, it was gorgeous. It
was seventy five eighty degrees. I'm like, let's go golf. Winter.
We'll be here soon. Come go with me.

Speaker 3 (01:02):
Like a siren that beckons the ships into the shore.
I beckon my friends and I told them December is coming. Well,
December is here, cupcake. And there ain't nobody, nobody golfing.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
Maybe that they're Rich conwell up there at that Wheeling
Country Club is you know, because Rich is a golf
a haol, like he can't get enough golf golf, golf, golf,
golf golf. If you want a good time, go see
Rich Conwell at the Wheeling Country Club. Great guy, great
sense of humor. You'll know Rich.

Speaker 4 (01:37):
He does his Rich Conwell Golf show right here every weekend.
But I begged my buddies to go golfing. I begged them,
got a couple rounds in. Hate golfing by myself. I
don't do it anymore. I golfed all over the world
by myself, and I.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
Hate it anyway. No golf this weekend for you, just
like the soup Nazi known to soup for you. No
golf for you anyway. This is the let Stock Steelers Show,
brought to you every week by nonsense. No, we got
great sponsors, you know that. Go over to the Red

(02:16):
Fox Winery. Red Fox Winery just a little north of
Washington County, Washington, p eight. They have created their Christmas
pop up bar. It's awesome, wonderful setting there the Red
Fox Winery. Of course we thank Italian Village Pizza. Got

(02:38):
a great location in little Washington you can go to,
or there are other seventeen locations. Don't forget to pick
up a bottle bark and Chair Vodka. Barkin' Chair Vodka
from Laurencetill to Stilling. It's Christmas gifts. All right, So
we've come to talk about yes Steelers.

Speaker 5 (03:01):
So just.

Speaker 2 (03:04):
Two brief thursdays ago, your Steelers went up to Cleveland
and laid an egg in what is now being called
the snow Globe Ball snow Globe Bowl. The Browns treated
it like it was their Super Bowl. Your Steelers treated

(03:26):
it like it's cold and snowy. Can we go back
home now? I don't really want to be playing this
inferior football team. And guess what happened. Ninth year veteran
thrown on the trapiche history as quarterbacks will go has
found a new life in Cleveland, Ohio. Jamis Winston orchestrated

(03:47):
the well incredible comeback even though they held Cam to
get in the end zone with that final rushing TD.
Lots of mistakes made in that game. So the Steelers
went in to Cincinnati last week to right the ship,
to write the ship. And they did as far as

(04:09):
I'm concerned, offensively, they did what they were supposed to do.
They did what they were supposed to do. Well, tank,
what what did they do that they were supposed to do?

Speaker 5 (04:22):
Well?

Speaker 2 (04:24):
Here's the thing. They're loaded with talent. If you don't
think the Steelers are loaded with talent. You're out of
your mind, man, You're out of your mind. You have
two solid running backs in Harrison Warren. Now you have
a third option with Quardline Patterson.

Speaker 5 (04:48):
There.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
Keep calling them Cordeline, Cordell, cord Roy, Corduroy pants Patterson.
That's what I'll call them from now on. Corduroy pants Patterson,
Cordnroy pants Patterson, your third running back doing some serious
damage to the Cincinnati kittie Cats. Now, look old number

(05:12):
eighty four there as old as a well, I don't know,
mountain goat. Mountain goats live a long time. You know,
old number forty eighty four. There, Cordial Patterson, Corduroy pants Patterson,
had a hell of a game. You had three productive

(05:34):
running backs in that game. What more do you want?
You have two outstanding tight ends. One tight end on
the Steelers would be great. Now you got two of them,
ladies and gentlemen in Darnell, Washington, Impact Frarmouth. Two really

(06:04):
good tight ends. So the Steelers took care of business
in Cincinnati Cleveland. Part two comes up this weekend. We'll
get to that later in the show. But the former
quarterback Mike McMahon, former quarterback of the Lions and Eagles,
and I teamed up every week. Let's talk Steelers on

(06:27):
twenty two to the point televisions on these at ten
thirty and well, anyway, let's throw it over to Mike
and me now talking about the game. Then let's head
into the locker room right after the game to hear
like guys from Harris and Friarmouth. Let's talk Steelish, puddle up,
Steelers Nation, Let's talk Steelers. I'm Tanky's Mike.

Speaker 6 (06:48):
You know the Cincinnati Bengals one of the best passing
offenses in the league, one of the worst defenses in
the league. Mike, things went exactly to tea in Cincinnati.
You saw Arthur Smith being creative, multiple receivers used, He
took advantage what the defense of the Bengals gave him
with those little dump passes down the middle.

Speaker 2 (07:11):
I know where you're going to go first, and I
do only you know how the one kid in school
it's always causing trouble and the teachers pay attention, and
there's fifty other kids. I don't even want to talk
about George Pickens in this first segment, so don't even
mention his name.

Speaker 7 (07:24):
Moving on.

Speaker 8 (07:25):
No, Actually, I love the creativity of the offense. I
think they opened it up a little bit more. They
were right around thirty three percent run game, sixty seven
percent pass game, and then when you go sixty seven
percent passing game, throw play callings on passes and then
Russell Wilson's up to seventy six percent completion percentage.

Speaker 7 (07:44):
You know, that's a recipe for success.

Speaker 8 (07:45):
And the thing is is, I think the pass game
actually helped open up the run game this time around.
And I actually like to see the Steelers open up.
You see, they had their highest score this season, you know,
putting up points. Now, the defense did get a touchdown. However,
that offense.

Speaker 7 (07:59):
That to me, that's the best they've looked.

Speaker 8 (08:01):
Again, it wasn't the Bengals don't have the stud defense
in the NFL. However, I think they did a good
job of mixing things up and keeping the defense off balance.
And it obviously showed because to me, Russell Wilson is
back playing at a high level, at a Pro Bowl level,
and I think he's getting his confidence every single week,

(08:23):
and I think that's what you need especially continue to
improve and you know, almost peak, you know, heading into
the playoffs.

Speaker 6 (08:31):
You know, you and I talked about this a couple
of years ago, what the Steelers needed moving on from
the failed Randy Fietner experience.

Speaker 2 (08:40):
The Matt Canada Sorry I even mentioned his name. We
talked last year about what did the.

Speaker 6 (08:44):
Steelers need in an offensive coordinator? I remember distinctly one
of the things we talked about was a football mind
that understood what are my weapons, what are the weaknesses
of the defense. I think you really saw that come
together with Arthur Smith's offense last week. He knows his
weapons and we're loaded. Friarmuth got involved with the game,

(09:06):
which was beautiful. But I like what Arthur Smith is doing.
I like how this team every week is getting a
little better offensively well.

Speaker 8 (09:14):
In the creativity, and he's getting everyone involved. It's not
just Friarmuth. You've got Washington as well, big tight end.
You can tell people do not want to tackle when
he runs, taking note of every single time someone comes
to tackle him. He doesn't just lower and run through.
He actually launches, and I would actually like to see
him just kind of high knee through it because I
think he will probably break those people don't want that.

(09:37):
It's like shack on a football field. He is basically
the Shack of the NFL. Right now, you get him
the ball in space, small corner, small defensive back.

Speaker 7 (09:45):
Has to try to make a tackle on him. It's
very difficult.

Speaker 8 (09:48):
Then you've got Friarmuth, You've got Pickens obviously, you've got
so many weapons. And then Najee Harris obviously, like you know,
we talked about it last week, one of the best
running backs as far as durability. He hasn't missed a start.
Then you've got to change up with Jayleen Warren.

Speaker 6 (10:02):
So they've got so many what about Cornell Patterson all
of a sudden execute, So.

Speaker 8 (10:07):
They're they're using everyone, not just it's a full team
effort and.

Speaker 2 (10:14):
Not one single jet sweep either.

Speaker 7 (10:16):
So you're seeing the creativity in the offense. You're seeing.

Speaker 8 (10:19):
But the thing is that they also have done is
they have gotten back the old Steeler identity. Whereas they
want to be aggressive, they want to establish the line
of scrimmage with their offensive line and get that run
game going, and they're able to do that now. Again,
they only had twenty one runs this past week thirty
eight passes, but they were still able to establish you know,

(10:40):
control the line of scrimmage.

Speaker 2 (10:42):
One of the things I really like taking away from
this Bengals game is I.

Speaker 6 (10:46):
Can't call them no name players. But when you're talking
about guys like Cordel Patterson contributing, Nick Herbig every week
steps up.

Speaker 2 (10:56):
Well, he's got a notiful on him. And Peyton Wilson
did well.

Speaker 8 (10:59):
First of all, Nick Kerberg is not a no name player.
He's a He's a great player, a great young player.

Speaker 7 (11:04):
They know what he could do. Obviously.

Speaker 8 (11:06):
That defense, that defensive line is doing a great job.

Speaker 2 (11:09):
Cam looks like he's ageless.

Speaker 7 (11:11):
And four he's coming up.

Speaker 8 (11:12):
I mean, well, you're talking earlier in the year, Tom
and challenged him and he stepped up and kind of
brought it to But to me, Peyton Wilson is, to me,
he's that we set it back earlier in the year.
To me, that was the pick of the draft getting
him in the third round. He is the modern day
Brian Erlacker. He can run, he can cover, he can tackle,
he can hit, he can do it all.

Speaker 7 (11:32):
And he's six ' four. I mean that's that's a
huge weapon. The half.

Speaker 6 (11:37):
Wow, they took care of business in Cincinnati. Now, Mike
it's on to the revenge factor against the Cleveland Clowns
coming to our field at Akroshor Stadium. Mike, you played
with Charlie Batch up in Detroit. Was he a nice
guy even then up in Detroit.

Speaker 8 (11:55):
Oh, he's a great guy, Charlie. You know, he very friendly,
goes out of his way for all the fans, helps
people out. He's got a great organization.

Speaker 7 (12:05):
He was a great team player as well. So but
he you know, he does a lot for the community.
And he's just a good person all around.

Speaker 8 (12:12):
Fact, my sister used to bust with Charlie, used to
bust on him, and she still does when she sees him.
And you know, but he's a good sport about it.
And he's just he's.

Speaker 7 (12:23):
A great person.

Speaker 2 (12:24):
He's a great person.

Speaker 9 (12:25):
You know.

Speaker 6 (12:25):
The Batch Foundation, the Batch Foundation was formed over twenty
five years ago. Charlie has done some.

Speaker 2 (12:31):
Incredible work with the youth here in western Pennsylvania.

Speaker 6 (12:35):
He has this incredible facility over in the Munhull Homestead area.
He has several fund raisers every year. Of course, a
couple of weeks ago you weren't there, but I was there.

Speaker 2 (12:45):
It was great. It was called in the pocket where
like guys like James Harrison were playing ping pong.

Speaker 6 (12:51):
Could you imagine James Harrison playing ping pong against you?

Speaker 2 (12:54):
No, not me. I'm not that coordinated. So let's take
a look at in the pocket benefiting the foundation.

Speaker 10 (13:06):
You gotta be a pretty good feeling coming here and
win it, right, Yeah, one hundred percent.

Speaker 11 (13:09):
Man.

Speaker 10 (13:10):
Coach Chief talks about those intimate division opponents, and you
always want to come in and get a win, especially
on the road and miss tough division.

Speaker 9 (13:18):
I guess these kind of back and forth games that
you have to have big plays and splash plays like yourself.

Speaker 10 (13:23):
Yeah, you know, that's what that's what we're preaching. Coach
I always say eight players, go be eight players because
that's what gets you out of the stadium. So if
you're a playmaker, you gotta go out there and show
up in these big games and pretend to do.

Speaker 2 (13:34):
That a lot.

Speaker 7 (13:34):
When you talk a little about that play, it was.

Speaker 10 (13:37):
Just off coverage on Tie Higgins ball got a little
bit behind him. I guess he was laid on the
throw of somebody was early on the route and got
tipped in the air.

Speaker 5 (13:46):
And yeah, man, gotta make it count.

Speaker 12 (13:47):
My girlfriend made thanks to having dinner for Nag and
apparently that's why he.

Speaker 2 (13:51):
Was tired today.

Speaker 7 (13:55):
Shout out jail though, yeah, shout out Thanksgiving, but no.

Speaker 12 (14:00):
It was it was awesome to uh bounce back from that.
You know, obviously tough way to start the game.

Speaker 2 (14:06):
I had flashbacks to my.

Speaker 12 (14:07):
Rookiear actually when they had a couple of pick six
in the first half, and I was like, not again,
but a big time for our offense to come back
and put up some points.

Speaker 13 (14:15):
Did you know this was going to be a game
for you mean, typical ways I can send that too
high shell and you you know, kind of keep it
off for some reason.

Speaker 12 (14:22):
Whenever we player, I just go off. So it was
awesome to player every.

Speaker 2 (14:27):
Time the offensive type of game, it was fun. It
seemed like, oh, say he scored it will But things
were working for you. Things were every you know, every.

Speaker 7 (14:33):
Time out there you felt like you could score.

Speaker 2 (14:34):
Is that kind of way it felt for you?

Speaker 14 (14:36):
You know that that's just the mentality you gotta have.
I feel like we bring that when we when we
step into the stadium, and you know, we just got
to continue to keep keep going down the right track
and and keep continuing the build off of it because
you know, everything wasn't perfect today.

Speaker 2 (14:52):
We still got a couple of things we.

Speaker 14 (14:53):
Can clean up on, and you know, once those, uh,
it's gonna be hard to stop the train. You know,
once we clean up the little things, you know, we
just got to keep doing it. We're just statement was
last week. Every game is a statement. You know, when
I lose a drive, doesn't matter. You got to come
dominate every game, no matter what.

Speaker 2 (15:12):
So that's how I looked at it.

Speaker 14 (15:13):
So you know, I just take that in every game,
game in and game out, and you know, I just
got to come with that mindset.

Speaker 15 (15:19):
So what do you see on that scooping far though?
I mean I just had the easy job. You know,
someone made an amazing play. Honestly, to this point, I
still don't know who it was because we obviously haven't
watched the film, but just saw the ball on the ground,
and if y'all saw earlier, I missed the one earlier.
I was trying to scoop and score that one. Probably
should have just jumped on it. But just by God's
great I mean, I got another opportunity and was able
to score.

Speaker 14 (15:38):
So pat.

Speaker 16 (15:39):
I know last week, you guys have talked a lot
about wanting to make that big play and not being
able to against Cleveland. Was it say, by the way
the Stevens was able to respond.

Speaker 13 (15:45):
And make those big plays in those elements.

Speaker 15 (15:47):
Yeah, I think it just starts all the way up
top with Mike t You know, you know we didn't
make any of those massive splash plays last week. We
had a few turnovers, but none crazy splash plays. So
just you know the way that we come back this
week to practice and coach Grady, who's our ball culture guy.
I mean, it just instills it into us. So credit
to the way that they are up top and continuing
to just be on us every day.

Speaker 12 (16:07):
You're doing this kind of a statement win for you
guys today.

Speaker 15 (16:11):
I mean we try to win everyone obviously. I mean
credit to the offense. They played lights out today. We
let up too much points and yards. But I mean,
every you gotta win every game. It's December football. I'm
kind of learning that my first year, but TJ the
older guys, I mean, this is why you play football
to play in December football. So you just got to
find a way each Sunday to get a win. No
matter how you do it, you're kind.

Speaker 13 (16:31):
Of getting a sensive with that ball.

Speaker 8 (16:34):
Next, Are you getting a sense of what a sea
football is your first year?

Speaker 15 (16:38):
Yeah, it doesn't really matter record scores any of that.
The best team is gonna win, not the best whoever
plays the best that day. It's so much momentum and
so much physicality in this division. It's it's awesome to
be a part of. And if you're a true football player,
you want to be in this division.

Speaker 2 (16:53):
When you clear the tackle, when.

Speaker 17 (16:54):
You see the ball back then, I mean because yet
like your eyes laid up a little bit when yeah,
it's kind of like slow motion a little bit, you
just in your head like don't.

Speaker 2 (17:01):
Throw it, I don't throw it.

Speaker 7 (17:03):
How much of your mentality to get the is that?
Because you look at the high ratio of strip sacks
a set.

Speaker 18 (17:09):
Okay, I mean look look who man, he been doing
it for what seven eight years now?

Speaker 7 (17:14):
Like he a Hall of Famer.

Speaker 19 (17:17):
And that he I'm sure he leads the league since
he's been in the league on fumbles forced fumbles. And
I think that just that's the culture that coach Salmlin
builds in Pittsburgh, man, and these guys like the foundation
for for guys like me, younger guys, you know, looking
up to them and like I said, like the chemistry
we having the room is unbelievable.

Speaker 2 (17:34):
It's important to get a turnovers against your guy like
Burrough because you know he's gonna get his or yeah, yeah.

Speaker 7 (17:38):
Like Joe Burrow is a great player, man, you know,
some anyway we can affect him.

Speaker 2 (17:42):
But that's awesome.

Speaker 16 (17:43):
I Mike Tomlin said earlier in the week that you
guys are gonna have to pretty much throw the kitchen
sing at them defensively because Joe can do so much. Ultimately,
how much of that defensive plan and you have to
use to diversify it for Borough.

Speaker 18 (17:54):
Yeah, we we have to put all the stops man.
Like like I said, he's a great player. He's gonna
get in the ball out and get sacked. The Lotti
is good pocket awareness and he puts the ball on money.
So you know, we have to come out there with
a solid game plan.

Speaker 9 (21:50):
No?

Speaker 2 (21:50):
I go crazy like an irishman if I drink whiskey.

Speaker 9 (21:53):
No, no, no.

Speaker 2 (21:53):
I learned that lesson a long time ago.

Speaker 6 (21:56):
You know who I hope has learned Their lesson is
your Pittsburgh Steelers went up against the Cleveland Clowns a
couple of weeks ago in.

Speaker 2 (22:03):
That it looked like a SnO globe got shaken up
up there, Mike.

Speaker 6 (22:08):
It is redemption game at Hinzfield at Akroshore Stadium.

Speaker 2 (22:13):
This coming Sunday.

Speaker 6 (22:15):
The Steelers offense caught it stride against the Bengals. How
do you see things playing out this Sunday?

Speaker 8 (22:22):
I actually think they got things going. I think they
got to just make sure they handle Miles Garrett.

Speaker 7 (22:26):
He kind of got after him a little bit the
last game.

Speaker 8 (22:29):
Maybe get help out a little bit on that left side,
that blind side of the quarterback, keep it tight, end
a half second longer, get that chip in there. But
and then maybe get a little bit quicker pass the game,
get the ball fast, don't allow him to have any
impact on the game.

Speaker 2 (22:45):
Miles Garrett has ten sacks on the year. No doubt,
he's formidable. Mike. I keep going back to the technique
of the Steelers offensive line. Now, look, Dan Moore was
thrown in the frying fam a couple of years ago
and trying to block for Big Ben. He has made strides.

Speaker 6 (23:01):
But again, just looking at the tape of Dan Moore
against Miles Garrett in the last game, there's some fundamental
techniques that are allowing Garrett to own him.

Speaker 8 (23:12):
But I don't know necessarily it's so much just him.
I mean, Miles Garrett. You have to give credit when
credit Meles Garrett is defending player.

Speaker 2 (23:20):
Thatchnique is off against Miles Garrett.

Speaker 11 (23:23):
He's gonna exploit that, yes, But I mean he's he
is one of the biggest, most you know, Uh, He's
just a specimen.

Speaker 8 (23:35):
He's a human specimen. He's like the Javon curse back
when I play. He's a freak and he's got no
Bondie fat on him. And the guy's a big man.
He can move, he can do basically whatever he wants.
You're gonna have to help out.

Speaker 7 (23:46):
It's tough. I mean, if you're gonna go.

Speaker 8 (23:48):
One on one with him, that ball has to be
coming out quick, and I think Russell Wilson understands that.
So they're gonna have to whenever they do want to
go downfield, get the chip. Otherwise that ball is gonna
be coming out quick. He's gonna make quick decisions. And
the thing is is got to play complinarian football with
their defense. Their defense, the Steelers defense is one of
the best.

Speaker 7 (24:03):
In the NFL.

Speaker 8 (24:04):
If they can get a few turnovers. You look at
what the Browns did this past week against Denver. Jamis
Winston had a couple of pick sixes that you know
they're playing up against a rookie quarterback and Boon Knicks,
and boon Knicks looks like he was a Pro Bowl
quarterback out there himself. So I think Russell Wilson, seeing
it the second time around, in a clear weather game,
good surface, I think the Steelers, I think they come

(24:26):
back ready to make a statement in this game.

Speaker 7 (24:29):
They know this is a race to the finish with
the Ravens.

Speaker 8 (24:32):
They get the first play seed right now in the
AFC North, the Ravens are behind, they know.

Speaker 7 (24:36):
That they can keep on that.

Speaker 8 (24:38):
They already get the win against the Ravens the first time,
so now it's their job to handle the AFC North
and I think they come out big this week.

Speaker 6 (24:45):
Again back to the Bengals game, I saw a maturation
in this Steelers offense, both with Arthur Smith's play calling,
the diversity of it. Mike, he used so many weapons
and this offense is loaded with web happens. You look
at George Pickens at wide receiver. It's a shame Austin
got dinged up with that concussion. But let's talk about

(25:07):
the running back position. What a wonderful position. Kind of
like your Detroit Lions have thunder and lightning in the backfield.
Up here, you now have two and you always have
had one. Two punch and Najy Harris Jalen Warren look
beautiful last week. And now all of a sudden you
throw him Patterson in the mix with I mean, I
mean he's drinking out of the fountain of youth.

Speaker 7 (25:29):
Well, yeah, you know it gives him a break.

Speaker 8 (25:30):
You saw how strong nause is sometimes he sometimes he
gets into the habit of holding the ball with one hand,
fighting for those extra yards, and he's got to make
sure he if as long as he's fighting for those
xer charts to cover that football up because he coughed
it up two weeks ago. You don't want to see
that happen to make fans nervous a little bit. He
does bounce around a little bit, but he needs to

(25:52):
get stay stay back to what you are. Nauji Harris
is the thunder, Jalen Warning is the lightning, and then
Cordall Patterson's little bit mixture of both. He kind of
is a change of pace guy. But I love when
Naugy goes north and south. When he gets going north
and south, no one wants to tackle him in the secondary.

Speaker 7 (26:08):
But you got to get him going early.

Speaker 8 (26:10):
That play action pass not only does it, you know,
not only the running game helps the passing game, but
to me, the play action pass helps the run game
because you know, you keep on doing it and keep
on doing it. Oh here, it's a fake. It's a fake.
It's a fake.

Speaker 7 (26:24):
I got to get out of there.

Speaker 8 (26:25):
And now all of a sudden, they do get out
of there, and now you're handing the ball off the
Nagie Harris, he's one on one with a linebacker in
the hole or even a safety, and he's gonna run
him over nine times out of ten.

Speaker 2 (26:34):
You know, Mike mentioned about fans and comments about Naugy.
I'm really adamant about this. I see so many comments.

Speaker 6 (26:42):
About Nagy all quit jerking around two years ago.

Speaker 2 (26:46):
People are throwing him under the bus.

Speaker 9 (26:48):
You know.

Speaker 6 (26:49):
Let me tell you something. Naji Harris is one of
the best running backs in this league, Mike. He is
only been in the league for basically three and a
half years now.

Speaker 7 (26:58):
This is his four season and he is the.

Speaker 2 (27:00):
Fifth leading rusher in the league over those four years,
behind Derek the Horse Henry Sakwan Barkley. That's rarefied here.
So I'm tired of you people in Junzer Nation saying
that Nanji ain't no good. He dances your and he
jukes around. Look, he is a special breed of running back.

(27:21):
He runs like he runs in tandem with Jalen Warren.
Don't change your style. No, he's a deep running away
you're running.

Speaker 7 (27:29):
No, He's a big guy. He can run hard. He's
got some good size to him as far as height
wise as well.

Speaker 2 (27:35):
He's a big man to me.

Speaker 8 (27:37):
Is he that top tier with Saquon Barkley and Derek
Henry h Not quite, however, this.

Speaker 2 (27:44):
Is rather he be the thirty ninth well I suppose.

Speaker 4 (27:49):
No.

Speaker 8 (27:49):
What I'm saying is is, like, you know, obviously this
is a contract year for him, he's going someone's gonna
come and get paid. This might be a situation for
him where, you know, the Steelers can maybe, hey, you
know what we do.

Speaker 7 (28:01):
We're gonna give you a little bit.

Speaker 8 (28:03):
You know, you're not gonna give him that top dollar
of a running back. However, you're not going to bottom
tier them either. I mean is a he's a top
ten running back in the league. He plays Steeler football.
He's extremely durable, and the Steelers would rather have them
than not have them.

Speaker 11 (28:19):
You know.

Speaker 2 (28:19):
One of the other things that happened in Cincinnati was
the development of both of our tight ends. Both of
our tight ends. We've seen Washington throughout the first part
of the schedule. He is what I knew he was
out of Georgia. He will catch anything you throw at him.

Speaker 6 (28:35):
Now, all of a sudden, Friarmouth is back in the mix.
He comes up with some points, some catches. Mike, Now,
you got running backs, you got tight ends.

Speaker 7 (28:46):
Well, they've got multiple tenants.

Speaker 8 (28:47):
They got Hayward and you know, so they've got I
think they carry four tight ends on their roster, which
they can get in a heavy package run. They've got
Scaronic who's a little bit more of a blocking receiver.
Van Jefferson is another one who's not afraid to get
down and dirty in that run game.

Speaker 7 (29:02):
And getting that blocking thing.

Speaker 8 (29:03):
They can open up some RPO type stuff with that
as well. But then you got justin Fields. It comes
off and again they keep on showing Justin Field's ability
to run. I'm surprised since he fell for the inside
zone and had no contain with him, they didn't realize
how fast he is.

Speaker 7 (29:20):
But he can move, but he can throw it.

Speaker 8 (29:22):
And the thing is is, at some point one of
those third or fourth and short yardage plays, you're gonna
see him pull up and hit something. And it's gonna
be because everyone's gonna expect him to run the ball everything.
So the Steelers are using everything, They're getting creative with
all their personal and that love Oversmith is doing. And
that's why you know his name's going to start to
surface around the leg is potential head coaching candidate.

Speaker 6 (29:44):
One statistic before we go to commercial break, I found
this week, Mike, that is really fascinating. Do you know
who has taken the most sacks in the league. What
two quarterbacks? You'd be right if you said Justin Fields
and Russell Wilson.

Speaker 2 (29:59):
At one hundred and fifty five sacks each. About that stuff, absolutely,
so that is a stat that concerns me. All right,
when we come back, we're gonna talk about well more
stealers versus that clowns. I really don't like Cleveland. I
don't like their lake. I don't like their beer. I
don't like their fans. I don't like that that what

(30:21):
is that an elf? All right or whatever it is?
I don't I don't like art Modells. There's so many
things I don't like about Cleveland.

Speaker 9 (30:29):
All right, fellas, this year we are we are announcing
our nominee for the Washing Payton Man of the Year.
I've had the privilege of winning this award. You know,
it's not about me. It's about what Walter Payton stands for,
being a good man on the field off the field.
This nominee hosts an annual youth football camp, provide school
supplies for books for over three hundred students, serves Thanksgiving dinner,

(30:54):
takes families on shopping trips for Christmas, host mentoring etiquette
dinners for young man. This nominee I have the privilege
of knowing personally this dude does a lot, doesn't say
a lot, but we get to see his work. Our
nominee is Larry Ogenjobbras brother.

Speaker 2 (31:12):
We got an obligation to give the guys. Let's just
tremendous way. You know, I feel like our opportunity to
get and get back at England today.

Speaker 17 (31:20):
So you know, you have an opportunity for others, you know,
kind of last one other than so you got any
chance to really make a difference. So you gotta let
us get examine any But you guys can do it,
keep you know, striking for great this species he's slight
something dice right now.

Speaker 2 (31:41):
Kam, How do you think you guys can defend it
tight ends this year?

Speaker 9 (31:47):
You know? Is it an improvement?

Speaker 2 (31:50):
I don't know.

Speaker 9 (31:51):
I just play the game, you know. I think numberwise, well,
according to you, I think we're doing pretty good. But uh,
you know, I think you know, we're honestly just trying
to win games. I don't think we you know, target
and say, hey we stopped the tight end, so now
we're all good. But uh, you know, whatever whatever task
we get, we got to stop.

Speaker 13 (32:10):
Okay, have the turnover culture that you guys have specifically
this season? What is it about this defendan that it's
not just enough to knock the ball loose, but to
jump on and recover it, score a pick six or
a scoop and score well.

Speaker 9 (32:23):
I think one we don't even acknowledge it if we
don't you know, recover it. And so the culture is
you have guys in this locker room, TJ. Patrick, Quay, Minka,
Deshaun Elliott, you know Nick Harbigh, they are ball savvy
and uh, you know, have a lot of awareness to it.
But uh, you know, it trickles down to everybody, and

(32:45):
everybody's just trying to you know, knock the ball looser.

Speaker 13 (32:48):
Obviously scoring getting the ball back to the offense is
a big motivation, but how much of a loose does
it to get a T shirt?

Speaker 7 (32:53):
A turnover T shirt.

Speaker 9 (32:54):
I'm still looking for my first one, so you know,
there's a lot of jealousy out there, but I got
picked my play up.

Speaker 2 (33:00):
Can you get like half a shirt for the.

Speaker 9 (33:02):
No, they haven't give me anything. You don't get anything
for the tip. Don't quote me on that.

Speaker 2 (33:10):
There was a time where young guys didn't play as
much early off with you guys in the last couple
of years ago, contributions from some of the players.

Speaker 4 (33:19):
What do you think is led to that and kind
of what's the impact of these young guys step up in.

Speaker 5 (33:24):
A Oh, you know, I think that.

Speaker 1 (33:30):

Let's talk Steelers.

Speaker 15 (34:45):
You know, someone made an amazing play. Honestly, to this point,
I still don't know who it was, because we obviously
haven't watched the film, but just saw the ball on
the ground, and if y'all saw earlier, I missed the
one earlier. I was trying to scoop and score that one.
Probably should have just jumped on it, but just by
God's grace, I mean, I got another opportunit and was
able to score.

Speaker 16 (35:01):
So Payton, I know last week, you guys have talked
a lot about wanting to make that big play and
not being able to against Cleveland. Was it say about
the way the defense was able to respond and.

Speaker 13 (35:08):
Make those big plays in those elements?

Speaker 15 (35:09):
Yeah, I think it just starts all the way up
top with Mike t You know, you know we didn't
make any of those massive splash plays last week. We
had a few turnovers, but none crazy splash plays. So
just you know the way that we come back this
week to practice and coach Grady, who's our ball culture guy,
I mean he just instills it into us. So credit
to the way that they are up top and continuing
to just be on us every day.

Speaker 5 (35:30):
Doing this kind of a statement.

Speaker 1 (35:31):
Win for you guys today, I.

Speaker 15 (35:33):
Mean we try to win everyone obviously. I mean credit
to the offense. They played lights out today. We let
up too much.

Speaker 8 (35:40):
You got Justin Fields. It comes off, and again they
keep on showing Justin Field's ability to run. I'm surprised
since he fell for the inside zone and had no
contain with him. They didn't realize how fast he is.
But he can move, but he can throw it. And
the thing is is, at some point one of those
third or fourth in short yard garage plays, you're gonna

(36:01):
see him pull up and hit something.

Speaker 7 (36:02):
And it's gonna be put because everyone's gonna expect.

Speaker 8 (36:04):
Him to run the ball everything. So the Steelers are
using everything. They're getting creative with all their personal love
and that love over Smith is doing. And that's why
you know his name's going to start the surface around
the league is potential head coaching candidate.

Speaker 6 (36:17):
One statistic before we go to commercial break, I found
this week, Mike is really fascinating.

Speaker 9 (36:23):
C J.

Speaker 2 (36:24):
Stroud has the least least sacks in the league at
seventy nine over the last four seasons. Do you know
who has taken the most sacks in the league? What
two quarterbacks? You'd be right if you said Justin Fields
and Russell Wilson at one hundred and fifty five sacks.

Speaker 7 (36:42):
Each about that staff.

Speaker 2 (36:45):
Absolutely, So that is a stat that concerns me. All Right,
when we come back, we're going to talk about well
more Steelers versus that clowns that. I really don't like Cleveland.
I don't like their lake. I don't like their beer.
I don't like their fame. I don't like that that
what is that an elf or whatever it is? I
don't I don't like art modell ELTs.

Speaker 7 (37:06):
There's so many things I don't like about Cleveland.

Speaker 2 (37:09):
I don't off Steelers Nation. It's Tank and Mike. We're
back talking. Let's talk Steelers. And can you smell that
pasta here at Italian Village Pizza? Can you smell it?

Speaker 7 (37:18):
Are you snorting?

Speaker 2 (37:19):
Because I'm like, I want to go eat, but we
can't until after the show.

Speaker 6 (37:23):
You got to come to Italian Village here at Waterworks
Small Route twenty eight. All the pastas homemade, the sauces
are homemade. It's delicious. You're you love their pizza?

Speaker 7 (37:33):
You mean I had the Bowlones last weekend.

Speaker 2 (37:35):
It was awesome, Bowlonaise, I can't even say that. All right,
Your Pittsburgh Steelers defense has to go up to a
hot quarterback.

Speaker 6 (37:44):
A hot quarterback, I never thought I'd be saying that
Jamis Winston and what is his ninth, eighth, ninth, tenth
year somewhere and there.

Speaker 2 (37:52):
This kid is now a hot quarterback.

Speaker 6 (37:54):
He's having fun like there's you know, I got nothing
to lose playing quarterback for the Clowns.

Speaker 8 (37:59):
Well, he's a little of a gun slinger. You saw
him at Tampa. He had a lot of interceptions early
and he kind of got benched, ended up going to
the New Orleans Saints, sat behind Drew Brees, learner nas
Sean Payton, and then learned behind Drew Brees.

Speaker 7 (38:11):
And that's one of the best things, is what a
young quarterback can do is sit and watch and learn.

Speaker 8 (38:16):
Now, he was forced to play early as a young player,
but then he got to go be played behind a
Hall of Famer and Drew Brees, and learn how to
handle himself on and off the field, how to prepare
like a professional, how to handle a locker room. And
you could see the mature, the maturation process and with him.
And so now he's getting another opportunity back with Cleveland

(38:37):
and he's taking care of the football a little better.
He's still that gunslinger. He still he still forces it
something the yeah, were interceptions a member and two pick sixes,
and he probably almost had a third uh down on
the goal line and squeezed in and just just got
knocked down. But the thing is is what he and
he knows that. He knows that's that's his weakness. He

(38:58):
gets a little too excited times sees those windows. He's
got a big strong arm and he had a couple
of tight window throws and he can make them. But
at the same time, sometimes he's putting his team at
a risk when he's doing so.

Speaker 7 (39:10):
He's gonna be a little smarter with the football.

Speaker 8 (39:11):
But with that being said, the Steelers defense knows that
they know they can bait him into throws and they
can confuse the.

Speaker 7 (39:19):
Secondary a little bit. They will bait him into those throws.

Speaker 8 (39:23):
And when you get those turnovers, extra possessions for your
offense equal success.

Speaker 7 (39:26):
It's the number one stat when it comes to.

Speaker 8 (39:29):
Direct win, the direct direct The one stat that directly
correlates to wins and losses is the turnover takeover. Absolutely
so if the Steelers can get, you know, win the
turnover takeover battle, get a couple extra possessions, have forced
Jamison wants to confuse him.

Speaker 7 (39:42):
Bait him into those throws.

Speaker 8 (39:43):
Because well, actually when he starts going and he starts
gun slinging it around and getting done. But they can
be explosive. You see Elijah Moore. You've got Jerry, Judy,
David and Joku. They've got the weapons.

Speaker 14 (39:53):
Ye.

Speaker 8 (39:53):
And the thing with jamis, though, is he will when
he starts heating up, he'll start taking a few more chances.

Speaker 7 (40:00):
Just because he might get going. It doesn't mean, you know,
look out, we're done. It's hey, we can still bait him.

Speaker 8 (40:05):
He's gonna give us one here and there, and we
just gotta be ready for it and catch the football.
Because that's the thing is, when you're playing defense, you
get that break on the ball, you've.

Speaker 7 (40:12):
Got to make sure you secure that catch and get
that turnover.

Speaker 2 (40:16):
You know, it's odd. I'm one of these guys that
used to go up the old Municipal Stadium as a
kid in Cleveland.

Speaker 7 (40:22):
I was the Municsipal Ctadium.

Speaker 6 (40:23):
It's someone they tore down and put the Rock and
Roll Hall of Fame in up there in Cleveland. I
was there when Rocky Blier blew off an eighty yard
touchdown run.

Speaker 2 (40:32):
I talked to Rocky about it. He said it took
him about an hour and a half to run. And
you know, but I remember the old Cleveland brown days
and it was really that bad. When you went up there,
they would slash your tires, they would throw things at you.
It was a nasty rivalry. As far as I'm concerned,
the Browns are in Baltimore. What I'm going to is this,
I never thought I would admire two players for the

(40:55):
Browns right now.

Speaker 6 (40:56):
You got to admire the Jameis Winston story. If you
remember the krab legs incidents, that was a kid that
was out of control.

Speaker 2 (41:04):
I like who he is now and.

Speaker 6 (41:05):
I'm happy for his success. You know, Nick Chubb's injury
last year would have put a lot of guys out
of the league. Coming back after ripping that knee up
like he did. He's having a pretty good year so far. Mike,
You've seen some catastrophic injuries in your career too.

Speaker 8 (41:22):
Well, that's always tough to come back from it, not
only physically but mentally and what that does to you
as an athlete and how difficult that is to come
back from.

Speaker 7 (41:31):
But once you do get that injury, it's it's never
the same. There's always a little. It's a little nagging there.

Speaker 8 (41:39):
You never feel one hundred percent and it kind of
feels like you have to change your game a little
bit now as Nick Chubb hit full stride. Yet no,
I think you give him one more year, he'll be back.
It's gonna take because that's that was a tough injury
he came back from and to do it in such
a short amount of time that what he's done. But
the thing is is like, yeah, he can get going.

(41:59):
But the run game quite for the Browns is not
quite there. Where their most explosive is in that passing game.
And to me right now, that's kind of where the
weakness is in the Steelers defense. They're giving up some
of those big yards, they're giving up some big plays.

Speaker 7 (42:12):
You got to get pressure on them.

Speaker 8 (42:14):
The one thing Jameis Winston does do really good and
I noticed it the first time against the Steelers. You know,
you didn't hear T. J. Watts's name. He had one tackle.
It was on Nick Chubb on the inside zone. He
wrapped hard and made the tackle.

Speaker 7 (42:27):
It was a big tackle. It was a third and short,
but no sacks in that game.

Speaker 8 (42:31):
And then you look at Jameis Winston against Denver, and
so many times you watch the film and you see
the DN coming high off the edge, outside linebacker coming
high off the edge, and you think, here comes a
sack on Jamis Whinston.

Speaker 7 (42:42):
The one thing he does great is step up into
the pocket.

Speaker 8 (42:45):
If you notice he gets up inside that Dan rush
and then he delivers it. He holds onto that ball
tight and he delivers it. He's got a big strong
arm and he can throw it from the phone.

Speaker 7 (42:55):
Both tight windows around, not much.

Speaker 8 (42:57):
Room around him, he can still deliver that football. So
the thing is, he says, when you get that pressure
on him, he's going to step up. That's where you've
got to get the d tackles to get that pressure
up inside, come high. It's not like Lamar Jackson where
you know he's gonna get up and out immediately.

Speaker 7 (43:12):
Jamis is gonna step up and stay.

Speaker 8 (43:14):
So if you can get that pressure there and forced
Jamis to get up and out, he's not quite as
elusive as Lamar Jackson. You get him outside the pocket,
you're not as worried as much. He can't run, but
he's not the Lamar Jackson.

Speaker 6 (43:25):
Look, I want to talk about two of our defensive
players that better get well they're head on a swivel
and get focused on the game.

Speaker 2 (43:33):
Joey Porter, Look, this guy's up. Junior junior. Yeah well
Joey Porter. Yeah that different thing, the junior the number two.

Speaker 6 (43:41):
Look, whatever it is, he's taken too many penalties, that
stuff that happened in Cincinnati.

Speaker 2 (43:46):
Is this the way I see it? And I want
you to correct me if I'm wrong. He has the talents,
he has the ability to cover the right way. He
doesn't need to be mugging the wide receiver. Is that
going to come with experience?

Speaker 6 (44:02):
Is that trusting his skills because he has the skills
not to play the game that way?

Speaker 8 (44:09):
I think you know he's he's kind of been very
vocal about wanting to cover the number one receiver for
every team you know, and had that one on one matchups.
He's been vocal about that ever since he's come into
the league, and he's done a great job. He is
number two in past interference calls in the NFL right now,
behind the rookie from Detroit, Terry On Arnold. But the

(44:32):
thing is is, Joey Porters have all come in the
last two three weeks and he's caught up to him
very fast. And so the thing is is, I think
what's happening is he is an aggressive defender. He's a
big corner. He's aggressive. He does get handsy, but I
think the book is out. I think people are realizing
what he does is he is more of a physical corner.
He loves to get hands on and I think coaches

(44:53):
probably have called the officials attention and said, hey, listen,
he grabs, he does this, and.

Speaker 7 (44:58):
They're bringing that to it. The officials tension early and
now now you're seeing that call.

Speaker 8 (45:03):
He's getting that reputation around the leg where the officials
are looking for it. And anytime he goes up against
those guys, he's gonna try and pose his will.

Speaker 2 (45:10):
But you know T.

Speaker 8 (45:11):
Higgins is a big receiver and expose him. And the
one time it looked like he was first getting patting
him down over the car. So he's got to be
careful because now not only has he caught up and
he's number two in the leg in pis, now he's
getting that reputation and it's it's becoming known.

Speaker 7 (45:26):
Every team knows it.

Speaker 8 (45:27):
They're gonna point it out officially, they're gonna they're gonna
attack him.

Speaker 7 (45:30):
They're gonna when they get.

Speaker 8 (45:32):
That one on one matchup, But they have a receiver
that can route run or can you know, can shake
and get looser good on releases. They know they can
get him caught with either a PI, a illegal contact
or holding. In fact, they got him twice on the
same play. Tie Higgins got him, so any good receiving,
he's gonna have his hands full if he goes up
against Jerry Judy. And not only just Jerry Judy, but
you got Elijah Moore who's pretty shifty as a route

(45:53):
runner as well, So he's going to try to get
hands on.

Speaker 7 (45:56):
He's going to be careful because he's got that target
on him.

Speaker 9 (45:58):
Now.

Speaker 2 (45:59):
Look, I think Joey Porter has the skills to play
the game the right way without being a bandit mugger.

Speaker 6 (46:06):
I want to go on to Patrick Queen here. I
was quite happy when he came in. He's a thumper,
he likes to hit things. But Mike, I've gone through
the last four or five games watching him in pass coverage,
pass coverage, dropping back with tight ends.

Speaker 2 (46:22):
Tara Austin likes.

Speaker 6 (46:23):
To play zone at that level situational awareness situational awareness.
Some players have it, some don't. Where they have the
ability to know, well, I'm going to throw something at you.
Greg Lloyd said, the best thing Bill Kaher ever did
for him was teaching him to know what the other

(46:44):
ten guys where they were and what their responsibilities were
during a play. Patrick Queen gets lost in the wash
on pass plays. What I mean is this, if you've
got that tight end releasing of a shallow depth, you're
supposed to lock him right.

Speaker 2 (47:00):
I don't care if you're in zone or not. You
need to know your space in the zone.

Speaker 6 (47:05):
Let's call it a ten yard differential in that zone,
he's not locking on and he's not.

Speaker 2 (47:10):
Defending his zone.

Speaker 6 (47:12):
You mentioned to me a couple of weeks ago he
was turning around and yelling at the defensive backs, the safeties,
Minka Elliott, et.

Speaker 2 (47:20):
Cetera, et cetera. That's what made me look at the tape.
It's not on them, it's on him.

Speaker 7 (47:26):
Well do we know that, because yeah, because I watched
the tape.

Speaker 2 (47:29):
But I watched the tape.

Speaker 7 (47:31):
You know the defensive scheme because look.

Speaker 6 (47:33):
If you're playing zone, you know as well as I do,
you have a responsibility in a certain zone.

Speaker 2 (47:38):
True, but he looks you look at the tape. We'll
talk about it next week. He looks lost in past coverage.

Speaker 8 (47:44):
Well, that's the one thing is you're always I'm always
skeptical to criticize certain guys because I don't necessarily know
what the certain scheme is.

Speaker 7 (47:50):
I'm not in the meetings. I'm not in there.

Speaker 2 (47:52):
So well, if it's man's on him, true, all right,
If it's zone, he's protecting his zone.

Speaker 6 (47:58):
I'm telling you, look at the if he gets lost
out there in pass coverage.

Speaker 8 (48:02):
Well, if it is zone, you'd rather have him keep
it in front and not lock on immediately and get
beat deep in that because that's where he'll get exposed
if he does get into that man type coverage.

Speaker 7 (48:13):
You know, Peyton Wilson, he can run with anyone.

Speaker 6 (48:15):
Yes, right, that's what I'm going to I'd rather see
Wilson's reps go up.

Speaker 2 (48:20):
If you want to put Patrick Queen in there, let
him be a thumper.

Speaker 7 (48:23):
I got to take a look at the film and
I got to know the scheme.

Speaker 2 (48:25):
A little bit. We're going to talk about this again,
because I trust your football mind. I will all right, Hey,
it's Tank It's Mike for Let's talk Steelers, Live from
the Well, Live on tape. Is there such a thing?

Speaker 7 (48:37):
Well we're alive.

Speaker 2 (48:39):
Yeah, yeah, you're alive. I'm alive. Well, the Steelers be
alive after the Clown's coming. You know what would be
miserable is if the Clown's coming here and they beat
us again and there's no snow and it's a beautiful
seventy degree day and all of a sudden we lose
to the Browns. I don't know what I'll do. I'll
have a nervous breakdown.

Speaker 7 (48:57):
He always does that, I think, I don't you went
on

Speaker 5 (49:12):
We're from this time with that drank football
