quarter former NFL quarterback, myself, Mike Uh. It's been about
six years now we've been calling the show Steelers Chalk Talk.
We're proud to announce that we have changed the name
(01:33):
and we'll be changing it over.
Speaker 6 (01:35):
To Let's Talk Stealers.
Speaker 4 (01:37):
Remember like your grandpappy used to say in a seventy
and M Stealers, guys, super bowl S, T I L
hyphen r s. That's called a colloquialism, a colloquialism. You
kids going to West Liberty and Bethany. Uh look it
up in that their dictionary. Colloquialism. Uh, that's a word
(02:01):
definition means local to the area. I guess, like we
speak enser in Western Pa. In West Virginia, unser, when
you speak in here, you're speaking in colloquialisms. So when
we say let's go Steelers, let's talk Steelers, we're using
colloquialisms for Steelers. We're excited about that that name change
(02:23):
comes because we have some exciting news. You know, Mike
and I have been doing radio for some different stations
for the last six years. Latrobe covering training camp. Of
course iHeart Fox Sports Wheeling, West Virginia. Shout out to

(02:44):
We're very excited that we will be on television. Yeah,
you get to see my ugly Mike mug mug tank Tantlier.
Of course, the NFL quarterback Mike McMahon who played for
the Lions and Eagles. Well, Mike, you know, I got
a face it's made for radio. Looks like somebody hit
me in a face with a coal shovel. Whereas Mike,
(03:08):
he looks like that prototypical, good looking all American boy
at quarterback. That's why we're going on television. Mike's the
brains and the beauty behind the operation. Here Sunday mornings,
ten thirty am. You can watch us on twenty two
to the point. Yeah, very excited about that actual television.
(03:30):
You know, Like remember Willy Wonker from the seventies when
TV Mike jumped in front of the camera after Willie
transported to the Chocolate Bar via TV waves. Mike said
on TV, Mike transport me, and he ended up a
little three inch little boy there.
Speaker 6 (03:47):
Hopefully, Well, the tank.
Speaker 4 (03:49):
Could lose some weight, so if they transport me through
the airwaves, I.
Speaker 6 (03:54):
Can use shit a few pounds. You're very excited about that.
Speaker 4 (03:58):

(07:12):
Talk Steelers. Welcome back to Let's Talk Steelers on Tankies.
Mike the former NFL quarterback NFL National Football League.
Speaker 9 (07:22):
Yeah, we're of a clipboard clipboard holder.
Speaker 6 (07:25):
By the looks of you, I wouldn't think that for now.
Speaker 4 (07:27):
Hey, this segment is sponsored by our good friends at
Lawrenceville Distilling. You gotta check them out, Mike. These guys
make ginger gin you know, like you insured, I love
that parking chair Vockey because you know your grandparents always
put a parking chair out in the street to keep
their space, and they come out and yell like I
got yelled at in La Trope. Some guy come out
and he's like, what are you doing.
Speaker 6 (07:48):
My chairs there?
Speaker 4 (07:49):
And I go, you guys pay Texas to anyway, coach,
check out Lawrenceville Distilling. They're great and they're in Lawrenceville
and they're opening up a new location around Christmas time.
Chiefs game time up on Route twenty eight. All right,
so everything is humming with this offense. You got a
great new offensive corner and Arthur Smith coming in. We
(08:12):
got a quarterback who's won a Super Bowl and Russell
Wilson who throws that bowl with quick velocity. There's a
couple Achilles Hills right now that could slow up.
Speaker 6 (08:22):
This offense and defensively too, even though Cam's having a
good year.
Speaker 4 (08:27):
So let's talk about your Pittsburgh Steelers offensive line. And
you know, I get a little bit nutty when I
talk about offensive line play. So if I start grabbing
you and throwing you around and using Mike as a
block in Dubby here, don't get all crazed about it.
All right, Young Dan Moore gets thrown in a frying
pan a couple of seasons ago. Never played left tackle
(08:47):
in college. They say, hell, by the way, we need
you to protect the hall of Fame quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.
Speaker 6 (08:53):
It's been an on the job learning experience for Dan Moore.
He's doing a solid job. How important is that left tackle.
Speaker 9 (09:02):
I mean it's huge because it's that blindside. You've got
to have that trust with the with the whoever's back
there protecting that because as a quarterback, your eyes are downfield.
You're not worried about what's going on up the front
unless you're playing against the Steelers and where you know,
you got to realize where TJ. Watt is. Now, when
you have a guy that can handle that, that speed
(09:23):
rusher off the edge, what that does is it frees
up the back in the passing game, you know, because
if you're coming up, if your guy's struggling, you got
to get that back to get over there and chip.
And now all of a sudden, it freeze up the
linebacker to either get dropping, getting coverage or a rush
late or some people call it rush to cover, you know,
rush to cover the back. By having that lockdown left
(09:46):
tackle who essentially can just handle whoever is over there,
it allows the back to either help out on other
sparts on the line or get out in the passing
game and influence a defender, get out in the flat,
get out in the check down, pull the linebacker up
and get the dig or the deep cross and behind it.
Speaker 4 (10:03):
He told me a story one time about Julius Peppers
chasing your rounds.
Speaker 6 (10:08):
Does that get him into your mind?
Speaker 9 (10:09):
Why do you keep on bringing up the past.
Speaker 6 (10:13):
Julie's Peppers.
Speaker 4 (10:14):
I mean, as a pro quarterback and you're worrying about
your left tackle miss and blocks, that's gotta affect you
on some level.
Speaker 6 (10:21):
No, I mean imagine Orangetown.
Speaker 9 (10:23):
You don't think about it. As a quarterback. You do
not think about it because your job is to focus
down the field, and once you start thinking about it,
that's where your game is going to start to You're
gonna be errant on your reads, You're gonna be errant
on your throat. So you cannot focus on that. However,
you will feel it the next day when when they
(10:43):
do get through ice packs. So you know, back to
your point, though, he's been doing a great job. You
know you heard it on the Giants game on the
Monday night broadcast with with Troy Aikman and Joe Buck
talking about how well he has developed and has become
the only guy that started every single game is the
O line. He's kind of the anchor of the O
(11:04):
line right now.
Speaker 6 (11:05):
Yeah, absolutely, you move to the right guard position.
Speaker 4 (11:08):
And I love Isaac Big Bad Mollo cup Man. This
guy plays angry. That's what you want your guards doing.
Came over from the Eagles. Now that he's healthy again,
he is solid.
Speaker 12 (11:20):
You know.
Speaker 6 (11:21):
Zach the Polar Bear, Zach the Polar Bear. Frasier. His
high school was called the Polar Bears.
Speaker 4 (11:27):
He was a state champion wrestler, so I called him
the Polar Bear.
Speaker 6 (11:30):
It's not looking good with that left ankle injury.
Speaker 4 (11:33):
He was in the locker room one of those little
carts they put you on getting through. I hope it's
just a precaution. Let's hope he gets back in action
right now. Ryan McCollum's been filling in pretty good.
Speaker 6 (11:47):
But I'm going to get into that Achilles Hill with
the offense. Right now.
Speaker 4 (11:52):
You go to the right guard position. James Daniels, Well,
you know, Mike, I was never high on him. I
thought the Steelers overpaid for a sea plus right guard
in James Daniels. He goes down. James Daniels goes down.
The kid out of North South Dakota. Something up there
comes in. He's been doing a pretty good job as
(12:13):
a rookie. Could you imagine being on that stage, coming
in as a rookie and they say, hey, guess.
Speaker 6 (12:18):
What, you got a block for Russell Wilson.
Speaker 9 (12:21):
It happens, and honestly, it's not that much pressure. I mean,
you look at O line is probably a little easier
to step into in the NFL than you know, go
say running back, say receiver. I think you know because
you do have a unit that can help you across
(12:42):
the board. The old line is a unit, and you
have to have that chemistry. You have to have that talk.
You have to be able to pass out, pass off
the stunts and the blitzes so they can help him
out a little bit. When you have one rookie, When
you have three in there, it's a different story. But
when you have one, you can work through.
Speaker 6 (13:00):
That, all right. I'm hearing it all over Steelers Nation.
Speaker 9 (13:04):
I don't think it's an achilles heel. It's just my
opinion because I think with the run game, with the
play action pass and with the quarterback getting the ball
and quick, I don't think it's as bad as you
think it is. I think Arthur Arthur Smith can help
them out, and I think the veterans can kind of
help me. I think Russell Wilson, with the veteran he is,
he could actually declare where the protection should slide to
(13:24):
a time. Love it can help them out as well.
Speaker 6 (13:26):
Love it. That's that knowledge.
Speaker 4 (13:27):
Russell Wilson brings you all right, the Achilles Hill. I
hear him out there, Mike and Young's her nation. That
Progerick Jones, he's a bush. He ain't no good look.
Proderick Jones is out of position. When he was at
the NFL combine, he ran the fastest.
Speaker 6 (13:43):
Forty for any lineman. He's out of position.
Speaker 4 (13:46):
You assault in the Giants game where he had a
grab got the face mask, costs us a touchdown.
Speaker 9 (13:52):
That was a slip of the hands. That wasn't a
true grab.
Speaker 6 (13:58):
That was you don't do that on Monday night. Football
is going to get cold.
Speaker 9 (14:01):
That's a little bit of a hand fighting. And he
you know, he kind of reached out there is grabbing
the offensive line. But it just happened. He just kind
of nicked it. It wasn't a blatant grab. It wasn't
like he was trying to do it. That was a
little bit of a slip.
Speaker 6 (14:13):
Here's the thing, and I believe this adamantly. He's out
of position.
Speaker 4 (14:17):
You have a solid right guard right guard in Broderick
Jones for the future. One of the reasons he grabbed
that face mask. One of the reasons you're seeing him
in the preseason getting just eaten by the edge rusher
from the Bills.
Speaker 6 (14:31):
He can't adjust to the speed to the NFL.
Speaker 4 (14:34):
It's too much space to work to cover from here,
those outside edge rushers. If he went up a tit
against DJ Watt, tj f fifteen sacks easily. I truly,
truly believe if you want to get the very best
out of Roderick Jones, you got to move him.
Speaker 6 (14:50):
The right guard.
Speaker 4 (14:52):
So that's Steelers offensive line right now. Let's hope it's
stays and play well.
Speaker 9 (14:55):
I think you just keep on letting him work at
right tackle and practice going up against you.
Speaker 6 (15:00):
Ussell Wilson killed in the meantime.
Speaker 9 (15:01):
But if he's doing that in practice against the best
with t J. Watt, he's only gonna get better.
Speaker 6 (15:05):
Are you gonna tell me that?
Speaker 4 (15:06):
In Week thirteen, when Russell Wilson is walking around with
a cast with Zach Fraser and.
Speaker 6 (15:11):
They're both like this, like like the toys from Christmas.
Speaker 9 (15:14):
He's gotta learn. Do they keep on getting them the reps?
And he's got to learn unless they have a better option.
Right now, I think you know they're there, they know
what they have. They clearly feel that's the best option.
Speaker 4 (15:26):
Listen, you're gonna have Russell Wilson and Zach Fraser gonna
look like the the Island.
Speaker 6 (15:30):
Of Misfit Toys walking around.
Speaker 9 (15:33):
How many party trophies do you have?
Speaker 6 (15:34):
How many one Bardi trophies? I got that replica.
Speaker 9 (15:38):
I think coach Tomin knows what he's doing over there.
Speaker 4 (15:40):
All right, we'll be right back to let's talk Steelers.

Speaker 9 (25:53):
So you know, back to your point, though, he's been
doing a great job. You know. You heard it on
the Giants game on the Monday night broadcast with Troy
Aikman and Joe Buck talking about how well he has
developed and has become the only guy that started every
single game is the O line. He's kind of the
anchor of the O line right now.
Speaker 6 (26:11):
Yeah. Absolutely, you move to the right guard position.
Speaker 4 (26:13):
And I love Isaac, big bad, mollow cup man. This
guy plays angry. That's what you want your guards doing.
Came over from the Eagles. How that he's healthy again?
He is solid. You know, Zach the Polar Bear, Zach
the Polar Bear.
Speaker 6 (26:29):
Frasier. His high school was called the Polar Bears.
Speaker 4 (26:32):
He was a state champion wrestler, so I called him
the Polar Bear.
Speaker 6 (26:36):
It's not looking good with that left ankle injury.
Speaker 4 (26:39):
He was in the locker room one of those little
carts they put you on getting through. I hope it's
just a precaution. Let's hope he gets back in action
right now. Ryan McCollum's been filling in pretty good.
Speaker 6 (26:53):
But I'm going to get into that Achilles Hill with
the offense. Right now. You go to the right guard position.
Speaker 4 (27:00):
James Daniels, Well, you know, Mike, I was never high
on him. I thought the Steelers overpaid for a C
plus right guard in James Daniels, he goes down. James
Daniels goes down. The kid out of North South Dakota.
Something up there comes in. He's been doing a pretty
good job as a rookie. Could you imagine being on
(27:20):
that stage, coming in as a rookie and they say, hey,
guess what, you got a block for Russell Wilson.
Speaker 9 (27:27):
It happens, and honestly, it's not that much pressure. I mean,
you look at O. Line is probably a little easier
to step into in the NFL than you know, go
say running back, say receiver. I think you know, because
you do have a unit that can help you across
(27:48):
the board. The old line is a unit, and you
have to have that chemistry. You have to have that talk.
You have to be able to pass out, pass off
the stunts and the blitzes so they can help him
out of little bit. When you have one rookie, When
you have three in there, it's a different story. But
when you have one, you can work through that.
Speaker 6 (28:07):
All right. I'm hearing it all over Steelers Nation.
Speaker 9 (28:10):
I don't think it's an achilles heel. It's just my
opinion because I think with the run game, with the
play action pass and with the quarterback getting the ball
on quick. I don't think it's as bad as you
think it is. I think Arthur Arthur Smith can help
them out, and I think the veterans can kind of
help out. I think Russell Wilson, with the veteran he is,
he could actually declare where the protection should slide to
(28:30):
a ton love it and help them out as well.
Speaker 6 (28:31):
Love it. And that's that knowledge.
Speaker 4 (28:33):
Russell Wilson brings you all right, the Achilles Hill. I
hear him out there, Mike and Young's her nation. That
Broderick Jones, he's a bush.
Speaker 6 (28:41):
He ain't no good.
Speaker 4 (28:42):
Look, Broderick Jones is out of position. When he was
at the NFL combine, he ran the fastest.
Speaker 6 (28:49):
Forty for any lineman. He's out of position.
Speaker 4 (28:52):
You assault in the Giants game where he had a grab,
got the face mask, costs us a touchdown.
Speaker 9 (28:58):
That was a slip of the hands. That wasn't a
true grab.
Speaker 6 (29:03):
That was you don't do that on Monday night football.
It's gonna get cold.
Speaker 9 (29:07):
That's a little bit of a hand fighting. And he
you know, he kind of reached out there is grabbing
an offensive line, but it just happened. He just kind
of nicked it. It wasn't a blatant grab. It wasn't
like he was trying to do it. That was a
little bit of a slip.
Speaker 4 (29:18):
Here's the thing, and I believe this adamantly. He's out
of position. You have a solid right guard right guard
in Broderick Jones for the future. One of the reasons
he grabbed that face mask. One of the reasons you're
seeing him in the preseason getting just eaten by the
edge rusher from the Bills.
Speaker 6 (29:37):
He can't adjust to the speed to the NFL.
Speaker 4 (29:40):
It's too much face to work to cover from here,
those outside edge rushers. If he went up a against
DJ Watt, tj F fifteen sacks easily. I truly, truly
believe if you want to get the very best out
of Roderick Jones, you got to move him the right guard.
So that's Steelers offensive line right now. Let's hope that
(30:00):
station plays well.
Speaker 9 (30:01):
I think you just keep on letting them work it
right tackle on practice going up against.
Speaker 6 (30:05):
You're gonna get Russell Wilson killed in the meantime.
Speaker 9 (30:07):
But if he's doing that in practice against the best
with DJ Watt, he's only gonna get better.
Speaker 6 (30:11):
Are you gonna tell me that?
Speaker 4 (30:12):
In week thirteen, when Russell Wilson is walking around with
a castle with Zach Fraser and they're both like this,
like like the toys from Christmas, I've gotta learn.
Speaker 9 (30:22):
Do they keep on getting them the reps? And he's
got to learn unless they have a better option. Right now,
I think you know they're there, they know what they have.
They clearly feel that's the best option.
Speaker 6 (30:32):
Listen, you're gonna have Russell Wilson and Zach.
Speaker 4 (30:34):
Fraser gonna look like the the Island of Misfit toys
walking around.
Speaker 9 (30:38):
How many party trophies do you have?
Speaker 6 (30:40):
How many Lombardi trophies? I got that replica.
Speaker 9 (30:44):
I think coach Tomlin knows what he's doing over there.

Speaker 4 (34:49):
Huddle up, Steelers Nation. It's Tank and Mike, Let's talk Steelers.
You know this offense it is not the Michael. I
did not see one jet swing against the Jets and
the Giants. I did not see one sidecar handoff. The
Matt Canada days are Oliver Arthur Smith is in town.
(35:11):
I love it mostly Mike for me at this point
I went.
Speaker 6 (35:15):
On last year a lot about how.
Speaker 4 (35:17):
Matt Canada did not use the monster Mount Washington out
of Georgia.
Speaker 6 (35:23):
Darnell Washington. Guys were saying, I want to leave him all.
I want to make him a tackle. He's no tight end.
Speaker 4 (35:29):
Now that you have an OC that knows what he's doing,
you're seeing the emergence of Washington.
Speaker 9 (35:36):
First of all, quit living in the past.
Speaker 6 (35:38):
Canada's gone. You don't need you know, they're just so happy.
Move on, Steelers happy Smith Canada's yeah.
Speaker 9 (35:44):
But so don't mention the name anymore.
Speaker 8 (35:46):
Oh that's won.
Speaker 6 (35:47):
It's done. It's it's like an ex girlfriend. Brady knows
on my car and she's gone. I don't want to
think about her anymore.
Speaker 9 (35:54):
Coach Tom was not mentioning that name. And then in
the building he's moved on. They move on, So you
need to move on as well. Focus on the positives
and what's going on with this year's team.
Speaker 4 (36:03):
Look, the positives are this, no doubt, Darnell Washington is
emerging as a threat.
Speaker 6 (36:09):
You now have Naugy Harris and a couple of young
guys unions.
Speaker 4 (36:13):
There's two years ago we're saying Naugy Harris is a bust.
Speaker 6 (36:17):
He ain't no good.
Speaker 4 (36:19):
Now you're seeing the very best out of Naugy Harris.
Jalen Warren is coming along after that injury. Your wide
receiving course seems to be coming together.
Speaker 6 (36:29):
But the big, big addition to.
Speaker 4 (36:32):
Your Pittsburgh Steelers Mike is a bona fide Super Bowl
winning quarterback who knows how to utilize the play action.
Speaker 9 (36:39):
Well, yeah, he's getting, you know, a second chance at
his second chance. You know, he went from Seattle to
Denver last year, which was the second chance, but he
also had the rumors of having his own office in
the building. A little too diva what you would say.
But now you know, you see him back in Pittsburgh.
He's getting a second chances at that opportunity, and he's
(37:02):
been doing nothing but great things. He's a leader in
the building. He got voted to captain. He's humbled himself
and he is all in on team first and doing
wins best for the team. Early in the season he
couldn't play. He was helping Justin Fields be a productive quarterback,
to find ways to get wins, to go to a
four and two record, and now all of a sudden,
(37:23):
he gets his opportunity and you can see how the
offense is taking off a little bit more. And it's
not a knock against Justin Fields. Justin Fields is a
young athletic quarterback who's still going, who's still developing. But
the thing is that Russell Wilson brings is he gets
that anticipation, he throws a little ball, the ball out
a little quicker and before the receiver makes a break.
(37:44):
You see how fast that ball comes out, which takes
pressure off of the offensive line, which wears down defensive lines.
When that ball comes out so fast, it gets to
the point where they're like, well, what's the point of
even rushing because he's.
Speaker 6 (37:55):
Not going to hold onto the ball.
Speaker 9 (37:56):
Yeah, he gave up and win maybe one or two
sacks last night, but for the most he was on
fire getting the ball, play action, getting the ball even.
Speaker 6 (38:04):
Off of that as well.
Speaker 4 (38:05):
You know, we're talking a little bit about living in
the past with the Jets sweeps and the Matt Canada offense.
It's been a long time since we've seen the play
action here in Pittsburgh. Parking back to Ben Roethlisberger, Mike
played for the Lions at Eagles at quarterback. He's played
at the highest levels. Let's go through the play action.
Especially when you've got a beast like Naugy Bulker. What's
(38:28):
it do to the defense? What's the advantages of now
instead of taking all these sidecars shotgun snaps.
Speaker 9 (38:34):
Well, you know you got Naugie Harris is a great
running back. And you say, you know people were calling
him washed up and they weren't properly using him. You
look at Arthur Motes. He came from Atlanta last year
with Bijohn Robinson. The year before that he had Derrick Henry.
Dereck Henry is a big back very similar to Naujie Harris.
I would say their styles are similar. But the thing
is with Naja Harris. When you can pound the football,
(38:57):
you can get those tight ends involved in the run game.
It gets that defense to suck up, especially with a
big back. They don't want to let that man loosen
the secondary. Those dds do not want to come up
and have to tackle them. And when they do, they
try to go low and what happens. Now he can
just hurdle you, he can run you over, or he
can jump over you.
Speaker 6 (39:15):
Is as good as he is.
Speaker 9 (39:18):
They're forced to come up, which essentially is going to
open up the vertical passing threat. Off of play action.
You're going to get the one on ones with George Pickens,
which is extremely difficult to cover with a guy that
has a range like a soccer net. So then you've
got Calvin Austin who's got the speed. They're starting to
find ways. You know, Van Jefferson another player who is
a very smart, savvy player. I played with his father,
(39:40):
Sean Jefferson, who's also a coach for the Jets right now.
Van Jefferson, great player, has that football mindset of a coach.
His dad played in the NFL with the Lions, So
they have those pieces.
Speaker 6 (39:51):
What Arthur.
Speaker 9 (39:53):
Smith is doing with the offense, pound the football, pound
the football, play action. The last two games, they've opened
up times with a little play action, pass boot, and
get the ball to Washington early.
Speaker 6 (40:06):
He is mainly a blocking tight end.
Speaker 9 (40:08):
However, how do you keep him involved mentally engaged in
the game instead of just feeling like a tackle ball game.
Get him the ball early, make him feel like he's
involved in the passing game. Then he will block even
harder for you. So that's what they're doing. They get
that run game established then they get the ball out quick.
I think they threw the ball only twenty sometimes. This
past week, seventy one percent completion percentage over you know,
(40:31):
it was two hundred and seventy eight or two hundred
and eighty yards passing over one hundred and sixty seven
yards rushing Nart Nausey was over one hundred. You got
Jalen Warren as your little sidecar, you know, screens sidecar,
run game, draw game, and he's a little change of
pace back. They're starting to find way. So what that
does is they're getting back to the old school steelerway
at football. You know when Kawer was there, they were
(40:55):
run the football, play action, pass, rely on your defense,
don't make any mistakes Offensively, they got beat Roethlisberger. They
got a great Hall of Fame quarterback who could do
some special things. Early in his career, they stuck to
that game plan. But the older he's gotten, they kind
of expanded and started chucking the ball around the yard
a little bit. Is that really still he football? Probably not.
(41:18):
They're kind of getting back to the days of the old.
Speaker 4 (41:21):
What I love about the Arthur Smith offense is this look.
We know George Pickens has all the talent in the world.
I've said to Mike, you know, there's potential there with
George Pickens. We all gather in Canton, Ohio to give
him his gold jacket down the road. However, if it
goes bad with George Pickens, it comes off the rails.
(41:41):
Arthur Smith now has him involved in the offense more so.
And I hate to harken back to Matt Canada, but
very simply, Kelvin Austin in his third year, really emerged
in the Giants game. Van Jefferson is a pleasant, pleasant surprise.
Speaker 6 (42:00):
So in the Arthur.
Speaker 4 (42:00):
Smith offense, not only do you have a season quarterback
in Russell Wilson, a dangerous threat in George Pickens. But now,
as you alluded to, you've got other aspects of the
passing game that are opening up.
Speaker 6 (42:13):
Friar moves Washington, Well it lost.
Speaker 9 (42:15):
That's the thing, you know. Van Jefferson realizes he's not
the George Pickens, so he's willing to get in there
and do the dirty work. You got a guy like
they picked up Scotty Miller. He's another shifty slot receiver
that they can use when Calvin Austin's not in the game,
so they've got the pieces. George Pickens is a guy
that you have to get involved th You have to
get him involved in the game early. He's one of
those receivers. It's like back when I was in my
(42:36):
Philadelphia days. You know, I sit in meetings with Andy
Reid and Donald mcnapp. We'd sit in Saturday morning, say, Okay,
this is the first fifteen place we've got to get to.
We've got to get Terrell Owens to touch the ball two, three,
four times early.
Speaker 6 (42:49):
Get him involved.
Speaker 9 (42:50):
Because you get him involved early, it carries over for
the rest of the game. If he doesn't touch the
ball to the late in the second quarter or the
third quarter, mentally, he's going to check out. And that's
just the way some of these receivers are. So you
have to get them involved in the game early, whether
it be a quick smoke, a hitch, you know, a
quick out. Get him the ball. Hell you are our guy,
(43:12):
you know, and then you can get the other stuff
going as well. But that's what they're kind of doing
with Darnol Washington as well. Get him the ball early
and then let him get back into the run game.
Go getting that blocking, you get that tight end, the
two tight end set that both can run routes.
Speaker 6 (43:26):
That's a weapon.
Speaker 9 (43:26):
That's a weapon because these guys can run pass those
linebackers and it's a mismatch on linebackers.
Speaker 6 (43:32):
Mike once again alludes to the linebackers. Again.
Speaker 4 (43:35):
You can't understate the fact that the play action passes
back in Pittsburgh. You know, Mike Russell Wilson actually used
to tape himself in practice going through the play action
motions locking up those linebackers.
Speaker 6 (43:50):
Is it a run? Is it a pass?
Speaker 4 (43:52):
It is so instrumental well doing it the right way.
Speaker 9 (43:56):
Yeah, it's not just a quarterback though. The quarterback is
a big part in selling that fake and making everything
look like the run game. But a lot of it
comes down from the tackles and guards keeping their pad
level low because a lot of times those safeties and dvs,
you know, they might be playing man the man, but
they're king. They're not king through the linebacker. They're not
keing through through the quarterback. They're keying through the left tackle,
(44:17):
the right tackle, the offensive guards are they pulling? Are
their pad levels high or low? Are they passing? So
that's what they're keying off them. The linebackers. Typically they'll
key off the guards, but they're also going to key
off the quarterback a little bit. And that's what they need.
They just need to show that ball get that linebacker.
They don't need them to step up two to three steps.
In the NFL, all you need to do is freeze
(44:38):
them for one step and then you got your guys open.
Speaker 4 (44:41):
All right, so excited to be six and two, you
got to buy we Hey, some guys get healthy. Zack
