Speaker 1 (00:00):

Speaker 2 (00:06):
Breaking ball popped up shadow right cha going up?
Speaker 3 (00:21):
Castiano's coming on.
Speaker 4 (00:25):
And the Phillies Championship.
Speaker 5 (00:31):
This is Luke and I on the Phillies brought to
you by Fox Sports The Gambler.
Speaker 4 (00:37):
What is going on? Everybody?
Speaker 5 (00:38):
Welcome back to another episode of Luke and I on
the Phillies. I am Luke Arcaney as your host. As always,
today we have a pretty special guest, Gabriel Rincones Junior,
currently the tenth Ranch Prospect the MLB pipeline in the
Phillies organization. Thank you so much Gabriel for coming on.
Uh you know, how's the body feel? How everything feeling
(01:00):
down there? And uh, spring training so far?
Speaker 1 (01:04):
I just got done with a lyft and kind of
forgot how how much I needed that. I went a
couple of days without lift and so yeah, you always
feel like you don't need one and then you lift
and you feel better.
Speaker 4 (01:13):
So absolutely I love it. Well. First of all, happy
belated birthday. I know your birthday was on Monday.
Speaker 3 (01:19):
I think so happy they.
Speaker 4 (01:22):
So, you know, what has it been like the last
few months?
Speaker 5 (01:25):
Because last year you were in Redding, you know, you
went to the Arizona Fall League, and it feels like
some some things are kind of starting to sort of
pick up now. I think a lot more people are
starting to know the name. If they didn't already, I
would say this time last year. You know, what have
the last few months been.
Speaker 4 (01:42):
Like for you?
Speaker 3 (01:43):
Just like in the Phillies organization.
Speaker 1 (01:46):
Uh, I mean it's been great and mentally been you know,
going steady with the same approach, same routines and stuff.
And that's always nice to do because when you have
a when that's going good, then you got to do
is ride the ups and downs and limit the downs
and kind of just ride that midline. But as far
as the people knowing my name, it's it's nice to
(02:08):
know that, but uh, that's more of a life more so,
like uh, you know, stuff, stuff that I can't really
keep track of. Were also I'll kind of think too
much about it, you know, absolutely, Yeah, so I.
Speaker 5 (02:22):
Do want to sort of. So I was looking a
little more in me obviously before this. And you had
a pretty you know, all around sort of like young life.
You were born in Florida and then correct me if
I'm wrong, you moved to Venezuela for a little bit,
and then you eventually moved to Scotland and then you
(02:42):
moved back to the US to pursue baseball. What was
your like childhood, Like it seems like you were like
all over the place and just you know, Venezuela, Scotland,
back to the US, Like what was that? Like when
did you really like start to realize because I know
I read an article if weeks ago that was that
you basically came back to the US because you wanted
(03:04):
to pursue baseball. You know, like, like, how is that
life over there? And like when did you really start
to first realize that, like, all right, maybe this can
be like my career.
Speaker 1 (03:15):
Uh, I mean the culture shocks that I that I
had between the transitions between Venezuela and Scotland and coming
here where it kind of took me a.
Speaker 3 (03:26):
While to get used to each one.
Speaker 1 (03:29):
But when you're younger, you don't really know what's going on,
so you just kind of transitioned pretty slewthly.
Speaker 3 (03:34):
But as you get older, you kind of realize.
Speaker 1 (03:36):
Oh man, this sucks, I'm doing it again. Oh my
friends are back home. Now you got to build a
new home.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (03:43):
It took me about three years to really get acclimated
to the you know, the country where I was born in,
And I mean I didn't speak English. I didn't learn
the English this way how I speak now. So that
was something else that I kind of acclimated too. When
I go back home, it's a little different, but.
Speaker 3 (04:01):
I mean something that you just gotta I don't know,
you just gotta learn your environment. You gotta. You don't
adapt to it, You're never gonna be comfortable.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
So I'm I'm I'm smooth sailing now, you know, been
in pretty well enough?
Speaker 3 (04:18):
Awesome?
Speaker 4 (04:19):
I love it, so do you.
Speaker 5 (04:21):
So you played most of your baseball in Florida, So
you grew up in Florida obviously for a little bit,
and then you played Juco in Florida if I'm correct,
there and and and then you eventually.
Speaker 4 (04:32):
Went to fau. What was it like, you know, getting.
Speaker 5 (04:36):
Drafted by the Phillies and then all of a sudden
you go from playing all your baseball in Florida and
then obviously with clear Water for a little bit, and
then you go to reading Pennsylvania. What is the difference
like there?
Speaker 4 (04:51):
You know what I mean?
Speaker 3 (04:53):
What is that like? Honestly? What the weather?
Speaker 1 (04:57):
There's kind of similar to Scotland, so I and sometimes
I was kind of back home, it's windy and cold
and there's more April games.
Speaker 3 (05:09):
I liked it.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
I I really liked it because it reminded me of
that crappy weather from back home in Scotland. So I mean,
I like, I like the sunshine and and the cool breeze,
but when it gets cold, I kind of I also
like that too, you know, I I stuck getting too
much of either one kind of gets a little boring,
(05:31):
you know.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
Yeah. Absolutely.
Speaker 5 (05:35):
So you're eventually drafted by the Phillies third round of
twenty twenty two.
Speaker 4 (05:40):
What was like, what was just like the first reaction
that you had?
Speaker 5 (05:44):
You know, because I mean every kid that grows up
playing baseball, I mean hearing their name cold or you
get in the call to get drafted, What is that
feeling like? What is the feeling of getting drafted? Because
it from everyone I've ever seen talk about it, it
seems like it's it's like it's like no other feeling.
Speaker 1 (06:06):
Uh For me, I was, I was in the locker
room at f a U and I had my uh
my fiance was with my girlfriend at the time, was
there and we're watching it on the on my computer
because we can't get it on CV, and my my
best friend Deck and his teammate was also there, and
my ultimate great nose trainer is there and it was
(06:27):
very very small.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
But as soon as my name gets called, my computer dies,
so it does.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
And uh and I get a call from my agent
and they're like, hey, uh please please want to take
you third round for this? What do you think about that?
And I'm like, I liked Phillis. You know, you go
ahead and do what you think is best. And then uh, yeah,
they picked me. And it took me about two weeks
(06:54):
to really like digest what had what had happened, like,
what had what had finally done after years of like
wanting to get drafted.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
And one day I'm just.
Speaker 1 (07:05):
In the shower and I'm like, I really just get
drafted by the Billy's and in the third round. And
I'm like, yeah, it took me a while to settle in.
Speaker 5 (07:16):
Yeah, it must be an insane feeling. So obviously this
year you get the non roster invite. Uh so you're
hearing clear water. What is it like just like being
around guys, you know, like Bryce and Schreber and and
and and Trey J. T. Castianus, Like, what is it
a just like being around those veterans, the guys that
(07:37):
you can sort of sort of get some tips from. Obviously,
I think I was going to get into this a
little more later, but one of them even handed you
the nickname Uncle Rico.
Speaker 4 (07:48):
A few weeks ago. I heard, what is it like
just being around those guys in that clubhouse?
Speaker 1 (07:54):
It's a real, dude, It's honestly, it's like freshman year
of high school all over again, where you're seeing the
big dogs.
Speaker 3 (07:59):
And I mean, these.
Speaker 1 (08:01):
Guys are a lot nicer than you know, the seniors
you get when you're in high school. But uh, but
it's just like you're you're climbing the ranks again, and
and for it to be these guys out of everybody
in the league, I mean, it's crazy. It's I am
just happy to be where I am, even if I'm
not on the team or don't make the team or
(08:24):
camp like that. That being around these guys is just
privilege on their own, on its own. So I I mean,
it's like being a fly on the wall, you know.
Speaker 4 (08:34):
Absolutely yeah. So so do you want to go back
to that Uncle Rico? How did that start.
Speaker 5 (08:43):
I think we all know it was Schwarber that started it.
You know, from Napoleon Dynamite. He can hit the ball
over the mountains. Uncle Rico like, why did that happen?
Speaker 4 (08:51):
Because I so.
Speaker 5 (08:52):
Did read an article the other day about how he
saw you in the outfield.
Speaker 4 (08:56):
He asked Kevin Long, like who you were? Kind of thing,
and then I guess he just gave you the nickname
the same day. Is that true?
Speaker 3 (09:03):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (09:03):
So we're so I get I hit a couple of BPS,
and it's like three days in a row. We're hitting
the stadium and all the outfielders on the on the
on the stadium, and I'm in the third group or
fourth group, and i gotta wait my turn because you know,
big dogs are big dogs are hitting, so uh when
it comes signed for me to hit, I'm just like,
all right, I put every single bit of my swing
(09:26):
into these balls, and I'm gonna send I'm not I'm
not only gonna aim the right. I'm gonna try and
name left center right. Because these guys are taking professional vps.
You know, line drives opposite way every single first round.
Everyone's red liners are just opposite way. And I'm like, nah,
screw that. I'm gonna show these guys what I got.
So they're over here taking swing to send.
Speaker 4 (09:54):
I think we lost them. I think west we're gonna try.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
And there we go, there we go somewhere. Uh And.
Speaker 1 (10:04):
What was I saying?
Speaker 3 (10:04):
That's right?
Speaker 1 (10:06):
So I think, you know, three days, three days of
really good VP, and I'm really feeling feeling pretty good
about myself and I'm working with k Long and uh.
And the next day Schwarver was like, hey, let's let
me just like, let me tag along. And I'm like, heck, yeah,
you can tag along. And just I'm hitting with Dallas
Rover and then we're talking and k Long is like,
(10:31):
what you got on this guy? Uncle Rico here is
hitting balls over the Milton Mountains. But uh, I like
that name, and especially because it's because I did something good,
you know exactly.
Speaker 4 (10:44):
If you get a nickname from Schwarber, you want to
keep it. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (10:48):
So obviously, heading into this season, it's a big year
for you. I think you once again, I think you
want to prove to a lot of people that you
you can play in the pros. And I think you
and I person I think you can play in the pros.
Speaker 4 (11:01):
Very soon. What would it mean for you to be
up in the pros this year?
Speaker 1 (11:09):
I mean everything, But at the same time, it would
mean the start of my career. You know, my career
didn't start three years ago when I got drafted. I
can do, I can put up crazy numbers in the minors,
but to me, you, I mean, the career starts once
to get to the big leaks you know so well,
it would mean everything. It also means the start of something,
(11:32):
something that I've been really been working for. So I'm
not trying to rush it. But at the same time,
I'm trying to play as well as I can so
I can get there as quick as possible.
Speaker 4 (11:41):
I love it so obviously.
Speaker 5 (11:43):
I think these last few years the Phillies have have
really continued to grow their farm system. Some some guys
like you, Andrew Paynter, Adam Miller, justin Crawford. How are
those guys to be around, you know, hanging around with
uh Miller, Paynter, Crawford and all those guys down in
the minors.
Speaker 3 (12:01):
Those gets, I mean, they're super disciplined for their age.
You know, they're like twenty one and twenty years old
and working. You know, they're working like me.
Speaker 1 (12:09):
And like the veteran guys. You know they're but at
the same time we're all messed with each other. And
you know, there were still you know, early twenty year old,
so it was some fun that goes into working with them.
Speaker 4 (12:24):
I love it.
Speaker 5 (12:25):
What's one goal for yourself that you have this season,
if you have any like specifically set for yourself this year?
Speaker 1 (12:33):
To be just consistent, consistent in uh, in my routines
and consistent no matter how you know what ruts I get,
and just sticking with my my routines, whether it be
you know, ice tubs every single day, no matter how
I'm feeling or not changing my swing and my approach,
(12:54):
sticking with it because a lot of it is is
how how disciplined can you stay in your own thrown
swing or a routine so your hits are gonna fall,
You're gonna get some barrels. But if you change like
I have in the past year, is here.
Speaker 4 (13:14):
Are losing them a little bit?
Speaker 5 (13:15):
Here, Sorry at anyone watching, he should be back in
a few seconds.
Speaker 3 (13:21):
Then I cut out.
Speaker 4 (13:23):
Uh, now you're back, Now you're back.
Speaker 3 (13:24):
Well, when'd you lose me?
Speaker 4 (13:28):
I lost you like midway through your last sentence.
Speaker 1 (13:33):
I was just saying that it's usually when you go
and when you get into ruts, it's just you start
getting desperate and changing things. So if I, you know,
I do get into something like that, just staying consistent
in my.
Speaker 4 (13:49):
In my.
Speaker 3 (13:51):
I love it.
Speaker 5 (13:51):
I got a few rapid fire ones for you. I
got one more and then we'll get out of here.
Who is your favorite hitter to watch growing up.
Speaker 4 (13:58):
In the press?
Speaker 3 (14:00):
Verry Bonds?
Speaker 5 (14:04):
If if if you're a lefty and there's one guy
you should probably model your swing off of, it should
probably be Arry Bonds. One one legend, one legend you
wish you could face in their prime.
Speaker 4 (14:17):
As far as pitchers, no one, no one, Ryan, I
love it.
Speaker 5 (14:23):
What's one word and why that you would use to
describe your game on the field?
Speaker 1 (14:33):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (14:35):
Unexpected for sure.
Speaker 4 (14:37):
I like that. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (14:39):
Uh? Last on what other sport would you have the
best chance to go pro? In?
Speaker 3 (14:45):
All of them?
Speaker 4 (14:46):
All of them? If you had to give me one?
Speaker 3 (14:48):
Yeah, who give me one? Probably be probably be a fighter,
either a boxer or UFC fighter. It seems the easiest.
All right for me?
Speaker 4 (14:58):
Answer all right? Last one for you, Gabriel, not going
to get you out of here.
Speaker 5 (15:02):
If I was walking around Citizens Bank Park in fifteen
years and I said your name to a random person,
what would you want them to say about you?
Speaker 3 (15:12):
Sorry? You cut out? You said? If you were, You're good?
Speaker 4 (15:14):
If I was.
Speaker 5 (15:15):
If I was walking around Citizens Bag Park in like
fifteen ish years and I said your name to a
random person, what would you want them to say about you?
Speaker 3 (15:33):
Uh, Philly lesen.
Speaker 4 (15:38):
