Speaker 1 (00:00):
The NFL drafts, and it's gonna be a great one.
It starts, to believe here at it's so crazy. It
starts at four thirty year local time. I'm not used
to that. I'm always used to the seven thirty start. No,
it's gonna be a late night, but it is. That
is the great part about being in the West Coast.
It's those early start times are something Mike McDonald and

(00:23):
John Schneider held their annual pre draft press conference, which
is what McDonald did for years with Pete Carroll and now,
excuse me, what John Schneider did for years with Pete
Carroll and now is doing with Mike McDonald. So we'll
start off with the draft process number one for both

(00:44):
of them and what they look into when they go
into the.

Speaker 2 (00:48):
Draft been outstanding.

Speaker 3 (00:49):
Being able to having the majority of the offensive staff,
you know, our new staff haven't been through the process
several times at different buildings and organizations has helped as well.
Think every just has a better feel for each other naturally,
like are constantly like evaluating the evaluators, right, So that's
you know, that's coaches, it's it's scouts, it's doctors, trainers,
it's everybody.

Speaker 2 (01:09):
It's just a much stronger comfort level.

Speaker 3 (01:12):
Mike for you, just same kind of thing.

Speaker 4 (01:14):
Now that you've gotten all this experience doing.

Speaker 3 (01:16):
This with John, what's it been like for you?

Speaker 5 (01:18):
Yeah, I think you just you have a really strong
feel for the cadence about what happens and when and
what those conversations are like. But just like John said,
I mean, it's just it's year two understanding our process
and how we do it.

Speaker 2 (01:29):
Just it really helps, all.

Speaker 1 (01:32):
Right, ear two, That's true. You're not a rookie anymore.
You're not a virgin to being a head coach. You've
gotten one year underneath your belt. Not a wealth of experience,
but certainly experience nonetheless, and you know what things to
do and what not to do. Now here's the big question.

Speaker 2 (01:46):
I want to know.

Speaker 1 (01:48):
We all know what the Seahawks need. They didn't really
address it in the off season on the interior of
that O line. So when does need come into play
regarding players in this draft?

Speaker 3 (02:02):
It ends up pretty much being all the way through.
But really, you know, your need ends up being part
of our grading system too. We're comparing prospects to our players.
Not necessarily, it's just the way we do it not
necessarily the rest.

Speaker 2 (02:14):
Of the rest of the National Football League. What does
our team look like?

Speaker 3 (02:17):
Yeah, what I was talking about with the combine is,
you know sometimes you just think you're just you know,
filling a hole and you're you're jumping that player ahead
of more talented players.

Speaker 1 (02:27):
So need will be a factor, which they kind of
said that right then and there. They admitted it, which
it should be. Which it should be because this team obviously,
like I'm all about the tight end in eighteen, you
know where I stand on that. But you're gonna have
to address that. And you've got a lot of picks,
five in the top ninety two. If they make some

(02:48):
trades and trade down, they could acquire more draft capital.
So there's that. Speaking of track five, what is it
like to have five picks in the top one hundred.

Speaker 3 (02:59):
Yeah, we're in there yesterday afternoon staring at it for
a while. It's it's fun. There's a lot of room
for activity. So movie line, it just provides us with
more opportunities to either just stay and pick good players
or or maneuver around.

Speaker 1 (03:14):
Schneider's so unpredictable, he really is, and it's one of
the things and he's had success, he's had failures doing this. No, listen,
nobody's batting a thousand. We all know, okay, you know,
I mean Howie Roseman took Jalen Reger over Justin Jefferson.
It's why he had to make a trade later to

(03:35):
get aj Brown.

Speaker 6 (03:37):
You know.

Speaker 1 (03:37):
So, nobody's perfect. Even the best in the business aren't perfect.

Speaker 2 (03:41):
They're not so.

Speaker 1 (03:42):
I mean, Jason light took Kyle Trask in the second
round out of Florida, the quarterback who's done nothing, and
he's I don't even know. I think he's still there,
but he can't get on the field. And that's why
Baker Mayfield just got one hundred million dollars guaranteed. But
where is the team right now going into Thursday night?

Speaker 3 (04:03):
Like where we're at, we can just go pick during
good football players. We're excited to have, you know, four
of those quarterbacks. We have three quarterbacks that have you know,
thrown for over three thousand yards in a season and
all of them can move. That's a pretty cool group.
Getting Drew back here, Jew's very well respected in the building.
It's great to get in back here into the mix.
He had other opportunities and we just stayed in touch
with his agent and we spent time with him in Florida.

(04:25):
Someone could get to know him a little bit when
we're down there, and he's just a great person, great competitor.
Out of this building.

Speaker 5 (04:32):
This is an interesting timing for me, like as a coach,
because normally you're about a week or two into the
process f dress week comes up. So I'm excited to
start our process as a team to see kind of
see how everything's going to kind of come into focus
over the next eight to ten weeks and into camp.

Speaker 1 (04:47):
But I'm really excited.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
About our guys.

Speaker 5 (04:49):
Just today, a lot of the guys are starting to
trickle in. You know, we start officially tomorrow, so seeing
guys we haven't seen in a good bit, and just
like they're excitement for the off season program and just
feels like spirits are really high. Enthusiasm's high, and got
a lot of work to do, but I feel like
the guy's metals in the right spot and we get
a great opportunity in front of us.

Speaker 1 (05:06):
All Right, Another big question the O line and the
specifically this draft class O line, which has been graded low.
What do you think about that? John Schneider, I think.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
It's an area of need. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (05:18):
Absolutely, I think we've been very well documented throughout the spring.
But you know, it's also a little bit of a
lazy narrative because every team is looking for offensive linemen.
We're trying to create guys every single year. It's just happened.
It's not anything that anybody in football is happy about,
to be honest with you, it's just it's an area
that hasn't been developed as well as the other side

(05:40):
of the ball for one reason or another. And it's
really I think it just fundamentally comes down to, like,
if you're gonna be playing football at a young age,
you want to go sack a quarterback and do your
sack dance?

Speaker 2 (05:50):
Or do you want to go block for a running
back or a quarterback? And I think it comes down
to that.

Speaker 1 (05:58):
I'm always when a public figure says to be honest
in an answer, because that usually means that they're being
dishonest in other of their answers. Now, I'm gonna give
him the benefit of the doubt on that that that's
not the case, But I don't like the to be
honest thing. My biggest question is why the hell going

(06:18):
on a decade and I'm just saying this right now.
You know, I don't think anyone asked this renting yesterday.
Why is this still a recurring problem after all this time?

Speaker 2 (06:34):
Why?

Speaker 1 (06:35):
I mean, why can't you fix this freaking O line? Uh,
it's frustrated. It's got to be so frustrating for you,
and I get it. And you know, and here's the thing.
It's too It is a little bit of a mirror
image of the Mariners in the sense that you look
at the Mariners starting pitching closer pretty much second to none, right,

(06:57):
and you look at the lineup and the lineup what
it's been the last few years. Yeah, I know they've
won nine out of twelve, but we know what this
lineup is. And ultimately, if you compare and contrast this
lineup to other teams in Major League Baseball, it doesn't
even compare. So why man, It's like, so, it's like

(07:18):
Jerry Depoto with the lineup? Is John Schneider with the
O line? It's it's why can't we get this fixed?
And it's gone back for so long, back to the Rust.

Speaker 2 (07:29):
Days and.

Speaker 1 (07:31):
Gino. And you know, that's one of the things that
when you know, even though I have coined copyright in
trademark the north Strom rat quarterback phrase on Geno Smith
I do have. I do look at it from the
standpoint of didn't have any protection, didn't have a quality

(07:55):
O line that could keep him up. But what he
was he was pressured forty plus percent pressure rate on
dropbacks last year. That's not any quarterback is not going
to be successful in that nobody All right, Track nine,
What kind of player? How do you evaluate your type

(08:18):
of player?

Speaker 5 (08:20):
From my perspective, I think it's kind of irresponsible to say,
like I can I can get this guy figured out
in twenty minutes or an hour or a day. It's
just you got to go with this perspective of there's
not like one singular thing uh that was red flag
like can't touch this guy.

Speaker 2 (08:33):
It's just I don't know.

Speaker 5 (08:33):
It just feel like that's a little overconfident in the process.
So or my role is in my opinion is it's
another data point to augment like what all the scouts
have done the rest of their work that our coach
has been doing with all their interviews, and I just
want to I want to just have an opportunity to
connect with that person for that you know time that
they were at that opportunity, and really excited about the

(08:55):
guys that I've met and been able to connect with
over this process. There's a lot of great guy, great
human beingsft They have awesome stories, and it gets you
excited about the opportunity to coach some of these guys.
So when they're in the building, you get a better
feel for who they are and what has got him
to this point.

Speaker 1 (09:09):
I feel like this draft, that this this is the
draft that's gonna make or break John Schneider's future here
in Seattle with the Seahawks. He's been here for sixteen
years almost, and he was the one that had the
power to pull the trigger on firing Pete Carroll. Well,
now can't point any fingers anymore, can't do that. You

(09:32):
brought in your guy, Mike McDonald, excellent, higher so far,
defensive guy. That's fine. Mike McDonald did not like Ryan Grubb,
fires him, brings in Clint Kubiak. Okay, But now this
draft is really a make or break one for John Schneider,
no doubt about it. What about now that you've brought
Drew Locke back to Seattle to back up Sam Darnold,

(09:55):
what does that mean for Sam.

Speaker 5 (09:57):
Howell, Well, it means that those guys are going to
be competing. So both guys know that. And Garren's part
of the mix too, He's gonna be competing with those guys.
But anytime you're adding competition to a room and a
side of the ball and a football team did force,
especially when they're great players and great guys, And it's
gonna be fun to see how it shakes out.

Speaker 1 (10:15):
I think it means at Sam Howell's days in Seattle
are numbered, you're not going to keep three quarterbacks, and
if you do, he's not going to be the guy.

Speaker 3 (10:23):
Now.

Speaker 1 (10:23):
He came over from Washington, had a decent season a
couple of years ago through for nearly four thousand yards.
He hit twenty one touchdowns, but he also had twenty
one interceptions, which were six more than Gino Smith had
over this past year. But oh man, that game he
came in, I know it was you're called in and

(10:44):
you're just hey, you got to go in, and Gino
got hurt and against Green Bay. I just cannot get
that out of my mind. And I don't think John
Schneider and Mike McDonald can get that out of their
mind either, And I don't think that's the reason why
he won't be here, you know. And then not so
distant future Charles Cross fifth year option track eleven. What's

(11:07):
the latest on that? Oh?

Speaker 2 (11:10):
Answer, we'll answer that at a later date.

Speaker 1 (11:12):
Oh oh quick and to the point, ooh uh oh,
Now you don't think there's any reason they don't pick.

Speaker 2 (11:22):
It up, do you?

Speaker 6 (11:23):
No?

Speaker 4 (11:23):
No, I don't think he's.

Speaker 1 (11:25):
One of the guys that you can you can actually
count on in this O line.

Speaker 4 (11:29):
He is the only right abe Lucas who had injury concerned.

Speaker 1 (11:32):
Yeah, I mean Charles, you know, yeah, Oh, we'll trust him.
Oh that was quick. And to the point, how about this?
How do Clint and John evaluate an O lineman in
this draft last track number twelve?

Speaker 5 (11:53):
Well? I think I think you know, the system has
been defined and uh, they've been running it for quite
a long time. I think what's cool about what these
these guys. You could make the mistake of saying, hey,
we're gonna be really myopic and this is what we
need and we're not budging. They're not like that, you know,

(12:13):
They're kind of seeing the whole player and then having
a vision for how they would fit with us, but
definitely understand like what we're going to be asking them
to do is really clear.

Speaker 1 (12:24):
Well that's good. We have to see it materialize out
on Sundays. That's it. That's all anyone here asked for.
Will this thing materialize on Sunday, That's all we care about,
because it's it's just become.

Speaker 2 (12:42):
A thing.

Speaker 1 (12:43):
It's really become a thing in the you know, oh yes, uh,
it's become a thing that it's it's almost like you
just expect it now, right Like you expect the Mariners
to not do anything in the off season with the lineup.
You expect the Seahawks to somehow have a broken O
line going into every single season. That's what I want.

(13:07):
I mean, I just we've got to find a way
to be able to get it done. And maybe with
Clint Kubiak, he's going to be a Now they've got
a new O line coach, John Benton. But how many
on line coaches Chris are they working on now in
the last five six years?

Speaker 4 (13:23):
How many?

Speaker 1 (13:26):
I mean, it's just like another It's almost like you're
catching up to the Kraken or the Krakens catching up
to the Seahawks new O line. Coaches a new one,
and it's like, just get DJ khaled on standby, and
another one and another and another. I mean, you know,
let's get this thing right, Like, let's get the O

(13:48):
line right, let's get the Kraken head coach right, and
let's do something here. I mean, it can only go
so far. It's only goes so far. So yeah, all
in all, I'm looking forward to being out there on
Thursday and seeing what's going on there for the first time.
And just don't take a receiver. Please, don't take a receiver.

(14:12):
And here's another thing too, And I'm sure you realize
this as well, because there's everybody in their mother has
a mock draft out there. How can anyone out there
have a mock draft if you don't watch college football?
That boggles my mind, It just does. Don't tell me
you're getting tape in film and watching that after the season.

(14:35):
I just don't. I don't understand that so many analysts
that not the national guys, Matt Miller obviously, mel Kiper
is the guru of the NFL draft, Todd McShay not
those guys. Those guys obviously do watch film. Daniel Jeremiah
is the best at what he does. He's probably the
best draft analyst in the business. I'm Mel's lost some
velocity off his fastball. He's not what he used to be.

(14:59):
So all in all, yes, we will get to the
text line four nine four five one. If you want
your text to be read in real time. Oh, let
me just go ahead and say one more thing, Christopher Kiddle,
back me up on this. For those of you that
want to text in and SAYO, you're talking too much NBA,

(15:25):
let me tell you something. The draft will be over
with completely come Monday. If you think I'm gonna do
three hours a day on the air talking about the Mariners,
you are sadly mistaken. So we are gonna be talking
NBA playoffs, and we're gonna be talking a lot of
NBA playoffs, and we're gonna be having guests on, including

(15:48):
Iron Eagle, who did last night's game between the Knicks
and Pistons. Okay, so this isn't on demand radio, all right,
And we've done our research, even in Seattle. And I
didn't know this till Purple Sheet told me the second
most popular topic next to the NFL. I thought it
was college football, and I was told it's the NBA

(16:11):
still today, So sorry if you're gonna be butt hurt
and you want to continue, ooh tony much NBA? Really, like,
do you want me to do? You want me to
talk about the VGK playoff series? The NBA moves a needle,
especially on sports radio. We know what we're doing here,

(16:32):
so it's the second most popular topic in sports radio.
So get ready. Sorry, We're no, not sorry. We're gonna
be talking a lot of NBA from now into the finals,
into the Draft, So tough ish if you don't like it,
because we're gonna be talking it. I'm not talking Mariners
three hours a day not doing it. I'll give them Marriners.

(16:53):
They're just due. And there were no games last night,
but we'll give them. They're just due not doing it
three hours a day, not when there's NBA games and
a lot of good things going on. I mean, believe me,
nobody wants an NBA team here. Well, I mean, I
know you do, but I want the NBA as much
as you do. But we can't pretend it doesn't exist
because of what they did to this city. And I
hate David Stern for that and f Howard Schult and

(17:17):
Clay Bennett to the nines. Okay, till the cows come home,
but we're going to talk NBA. Just thought I mentioned
that your text of the day four nine, four, five
one and Degeneration X used to say something which I
won't say. If you're not down with that, I got
two words for you, MJ. In the midday ninety three
to three KJR.

Speaker 6 (17:37):
You're listening to the home of the Huskies KREK and
Seattle's best NFL Draft coverage in the twenty twenty five
NFL Draft. Now back to Mark James MJ in the
midday on Sports Radio ninety three point three KJR FM.

Speaker 1 (18:00):
Oh, they got the mock traf going on ESPN right now.
They have the Colts taking Colston Lovelan fourteen. No, no, no,
that's the guy I want here in Seattle. I mean, listen,
it's who knows what's gonna happen four nine, four or
five one. You know, that was sort of an unexpected
spontaneous rant that I went on. But there's always one
Chad or male Karen, there's always one Chad out there.

(18:22):
It's like, who just give me? What do you hate
about the NBA so much? Besides the fact of what
you know again, that was seventeen years ago, and I
get it. And we're waiting on pins and needles to
get the Sonics back. But and I understand, regular season
NBA leaves a lot to be desired. But playoff basketball. Wow,
did you watch that Clippers Nuggets game last night? I

(18:44):
mean that that was this series. You're already getting your
money's worth? You know what felt good? Can I tell
you what I did during the break place my over
bet for tonight? Nice little text down to Florida, so nice,
so nice. No more runs to the kiss, you know,
no more having to find a parking spot on the

(19:04):
eighth level and and go through smoke cigarette smoke and
give my ID so they can facial resh facial recognition me.
And oh it's just so nice to text. Oh thank Lord.
Hopefully one day in Washington they'll do it the right way,
all right, I'll eat it off. Two o six. Wait

(19:25):
a minute, j Moore is married to Genie Buss. Most
important thing I've learned today from the two o six.
Yes he is Jay Moore. He got that ring bro
I give the man credit. I'm like, good for you.
You are now a co owner of the freaking Lakers.
Good for you your he really is and listen J

(19:47):
Moore No Sports. I think he used to have a
show that was called j Moore More Sports on ESPN.
Didn't last long, but yes, you learn something new every day.

Speaker 7 (19:56):
From the two o six great coach, Mark for the Kraken.
They're all in on it. Yeah someone, yeah it is Yeah, listen.

Speaker 1 (20:06):
Rick Tockett obviously has experience retread. I don't have a
problem with it. There are guys out there. Mike Betton
added to the list, and Mike Betton brought up a
great one that and I can't believe I'm a little
mad at myself that I didn't think of. Uh is
the Providence Bruins head coach, which you got to add
him to the list as well, Ryan Muganel. But I

(20:28):
would imagine he and Jay Leech are going to be
interviewing for that Bruins job pretty soon. So you better
get on this. Let's let's let's do this. Let's be real.
I'm a big fan, but you are nowhere near as
hot as Adriana Lima, not even close. Four two five. Well,
I know that nowhere near. Absolutely no.

Speaker 7 (20:48):
This is from our guy, Marcus out of the two
oh six. I don't like the Poto because he seems arrogant,
but people who don't like him for his decisions don't listen.
And back to back off seasons, he pretty much said
he can't spend money, so his hands are tides on
what he can get. I think we would still have
GENO and DK if it was up to him.

Speaker 1 (21:09):
Oh, if he was running the Seahawks. Okay, yeah, yeah,
they probably would just status quo. And you know, I
talked to someone recently who had a twenty minute conversation
with John Stanton at spring training, and if that conversation
could be made for public dissemination, let's just say, Mariners fans,

(21:31):
all of your criticism I'll lead a disc is completely
warranted and validated. And if you knew what I know
about this conversation, you would be even more pissed off
than you are right now. And I'll leave it at that.
All right, Let's see here, let me get this straight.
From the two zero six. Crappy roster players blame coach,

(21:54):
fire coach new players. Crappy roster players blame coach, fire
coach promote GM. How about get some good players from
the two zero six you have no argument from me,
no argument from me.

Speaker 7 (22:08):
From the two five to three fifth year option for
Charles Cross is north of seventeen million. That's why John
needs to evaluate his options. My question, would you pay Cross?
And is he worth that seventeen plus million?

Speaker 1 (22:22):
Yeah, because he's the only thing I got. Yeah, I
would you paid? You paid eighteen million guaranteed to freaking
DeMarcus Lawrence. Yes, I want a guy who's got one
of the most important positions on this football team to
help protect the quarterback, which is something notorious leaders franchise
cannot do. Is John under pressure to have a great draft?

Speaker 4 (22:41):
From two to five to three million?

Speaker 2 (22:43):
Percent?

Speaker 1 (22:44):
Absolutely co sign on that one.

Speaker 4 (22:47):
This next one is from the two five to three.

Speaker 1 (22:51):
I missed it. Take who in the over Grizzlies thunder
over two twenty nine, two twenty nine and a half?
Bet it over? Betted out that me later. There you go?
Uh you do, Let's see.

Speaker 2 (23:06):
Let me see.

Speaker 1 (23:09):
Huh you're five okay, Mark, You're finally getting it. This
is a league orchestrated trade from the Office of Silver.
It's la you know, strange stuff happens in the biggest
market in the league, well, second biggest market in the league.
It's just amazing how the one thing that LA never
got David Stern, it's nade the Chris Paul trade to

(23:30):
the Lakers.

Speaker 4 (23:31):
Chris Paul and Kobe rightscussed.

Speaker 1 (23:34):
Oh, unbelievable, unbelievable.

Speaker 4 (23:39):
Mark.

Speaker 1 (23:39):
I also placed a big bet, how do you feel
Grizzlies first quarter plus four.

Speaker 2 (23:42):
And a half?

Speaker 1 (23:43):
I don't do a lot of that for it. I
don't do the first quarter first half stuff. I'm not
a big fan, just not a big fan of it.

Speaker 7 (23:52):
So from the two o six, any quarterback is going
to struggle with the Seahawks k Mart offensive line.

Speaker 1 (24:00):
Oh yeah, Kmart's not even in even around anymore, which
is pretty much the Seahawks ol line, all right. From
uh the four, two five, Ty Warren is worth a
trade up for the Hawks. Dude is a game breaker
and Darnell needs a solid tight end. Duke Iron I agree,
who's your partner? Is it gonna be New Orleans at nine?

(24:23):
I don't think. Oh, oh, here's another thing too. The
more and more I read, so first I thought that
Shadur was a foregone conclusion to the Saints at nine.
Now I'm starting to think he might not be going
in the first twenty picks. Some people, including Jonathan Jones

(24:43):
from CBS, don't even have him going in.

Speaker 2 (24:45):
The first round.

Speaker 1 (24:47):
So there's that. So we'll see. That's gonna be the
interesting I'll tell you what, He's very smart to not
go to that green room, very smart to not go.

Speaker 7 (24:58):
This is from Rod out of the two six, where
does Steph rank as the greatest of all time? And
if he wanted another title, where does he go?

Speaker 2 (25:06):
Then?

Speaker 1 (25:07):
Well, it's two separate questions right now. I have him.
I mean, listen, I'm biased. I know him, I love him.

Speaker 4 (25:14):
I I okay, take the bias out.

Speaker 1 (25:16):
Okay, take the bias out. All right, take the bias out.
It's tough to do, but let's do it. Take your
buy do it. I see, I have to equate one thing.
When you talk about Steph christ change the game more
than him?

Speaker 6 (25:29):
Who?

Speaker 1 (25:30):
I sound like an owl, but who? Who? I'm waiting.
It's a rhetorical question. Nobody, no one, No one has
changed the game of basketball more than Steph Curry. Nobody.
He's the one who made it be played beyond twenty
four feet. So from that I have listen, he's got

(25:52):
the same amount of titles Lebron. But here's the difference.
Lebron had won in the bubble. Steph was the reason
Lebron had the brick again. Miami Boss kicks it out
to Ray Allen, nails the three bails out Lebron there
to win it. I've got Steph over Lebron, and I'm
and i am being as unbiased and objective as possible

(26:13):
at time.

Speaker 4 (26:14):
That doesn't get a bump.

Speaker 1 (26:16):
You see who is the second all time leading score
after like before Lebron surpassed like him in the second place,
Karl Malone. Do you see you know what I mean?
That's a longevity award. That's a long Jemmy, No, no, no.
And by the way, his stat line hasn't dropped off,
and and so there's that as well. I just I

(26:38):
have Steph abum, I have Steph five five. Not I'm
mount Rushmore, but pretty damn close, pretty damn close. What
else you got? H?

Speaker 4 (26:47):
Four two? Yeah?

Speaker 7 (26:48):
Four two five? Ty Warren is worth a tread out
for the Hawks, Dude as a game breaker. I think
you read that one, didn't you. I did go for
another one.

Speaker 4 (26:55):
This is the last one for me.

Speaker 7 (26:59):
Okay, this is from Ben I know it's supposed to
be some historic ballpark, but I hate watching baseball from
Fenway Park.

Speaker 4 (27:08):
Watching that
