Nick Baumgardner, Senior writer and draft analyst joins Marc to give his thoughts on the Seahawks selecting Grey Zabel with the 18th pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, plus much more. my favorite pick of the night.

Quite frankly, I think that.

I gave it. I get yeah, I gave it an
eight plus on our site when we did immediate grades.
I just we talked about this when I was on
with you guys last week, and I've said it to
a few other people in Seattle, like it seems like
every year for the last several years, we've been talking
about they need to fix, you know, the interior that
offensive line. And to me, in this draft, Zabel was
absolutely the best interior offensive lineman in terms of versatility

IQ you know, teammates loved him, knows what he's doing.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
You know, can handle.
Speaker 4 (01:09):
Multiple different positions, could be a center, could be a guard,
could probably even play tackle in a pinch if you
really need him to do it. I think this guy's
just a really really steady, solid football player, a culture changer,
you know, possibly as well, who I think is just
going to do a ton to finally help, you know,
the Seahawks, fix some of that stuff inside and maybe
help get the run game going a little bit and

everything else. So to me, you know, finding a guy
who can be in front of Stam Darnold, which was
a big problem last year with him in Minnesota. Right
when their offensive line broke down, things kind of got
wobbly for him. So everything about the pick fit need
where they got him, I thought he could have gone higher.
I thought was great. I thought this was an outstanding pick.

Why would you take him over Donovan Jackson who moved
from guard to tackle and never allowed to sack the
rest of the year when Josh Simmons went down with
a torn Pateeller tendon Ay and Listen Nick against much
better competition, including a run through the playoffs Tennessee Oregon
Texas and Notre Dame.
Speaker 4 (02:09):
I like Donovan Jackson, I even like Josh Simmons, but
to me, Zabel is the guy who I just it's
really really hard to find anything, including his run at
the Senior Bowl where he's overwhelmed, where he's out of place,
where he's not exactly where he needs to be, and yeah,
is there a type of risk there with you know,
he was playing at a lower level. Obviously the guy

like Donovan was sure, But at the same time, you know,
a lot of the appeal for Donovan Jackson was four
games at tackle or whatever it was, five six games
at tackle.

At the end of his run.

He was also sort of inconsistent as a guard earlier
in his career as well. I think Zabel technically, with
his technique and all that stuff, is a better player.
I don't know if he's physically a better player, but
it's also close. He's a very good athlete. I think
people kind of underrated that in the process as well.
So to me, he is He was unarguably a top
fifteen player in this class, and I thought it was

a great, great spot for them to find him.

Yeah, that's a great question.

I don't know if I don't know if I have
one that's pop it at the top of my head.
I just it's hard because he literally has done everything
all five positions. I just I don't know that you
find too. You find a lot of guys that come
through that have that say they can do this, or
you often see guys that played guard tackle that get
asked to play center in draft prep and they get

through it and it's what we'll see. But like this guy.
My favorite story about grays Abel. He told me this
actually a while ago when he was in high school. Right,
he was a sophomore in high school. He was a
starter on one of the best teams there in Dakota.
They were in the state championship game. He'd played tackle
all season at like, you know, fourteen years old. Okay,
they get to the halftime of the title game. The
team starting center breaks his hand. The coach goes comes

to grays Abel asks him if he asks him if
he's ever snapped the football before he says no, he says, okay,
well you got ten minutes to figure it out. He
figures it out, They go back out, they win the
state title and everything, you know, everything with him football wise,
just comes very very easily from a family of athletes.
So to me, he's just one of these unique guys
who's a grinder, you know, like who just finds a

way to get it done and doesn't really ever seem overwhelmed.
I think that's the one thing that I take away
from him the most, is like no challenge that was
put in front of him ever seemed too big. He
was also a guy that was offered a lot of
money to leave and he didn't. You know, one of
those guys too. I think that the character there with
him is really really high up, you know, close to
to like what it is with Will Campbell, who was

the top offensive lineman in the draft. I think he's
able and him are pretty similar in that sense.

Okay, fair enough, Nick So no real name, but he's
his own thing. I gotta tell you, you made such
a compelling case that I'm starting to field literally.

now that being said, and I think I think they
got the pick right is certainly the position right I personally,

an only child and I've been and I've lived a

a I mean, I grow up in Greenwich, Connecticut, but
I also didn't grow up in you know, a trailer
park in Alabama. So I've lived a pretty nice life
where I've you know, kind of when I got things,
I'm like, yeah, that's nice, but I would rather have that.
So I've always will apply that to everything in life.

That being said, Seahawks are on the board tonight, fifty
and fifty two. Let me throw not that I need
to basically influence the witness on the stand here, I'm
gonna throw two names at you. Jaden Higgins six four
and a half wide receiver Iowa State, and my guy,
you know, I believe that you, Elijah Arroyo, Seahawks need

a tight and would are those guys that you could
see either one of them or maybe both of them
here in Seattle.

Absolutely, I actually gave Jaydon Higgins in my mock this
morning for rounds two and three. I think that that
would be a really good fit there if to do.
Seattle's got an awesome opportunity here, by the way, four
picks on day two, a chance to get four more
starters in there. And Higgins is one of those guys
who he's not as fast as what you're losing with DK.
He's not, you know, world class burner.

He's a sub four or five guy. Four four seven
I think it was. And he's legit big, like six'
four legitimately sixty four two hundred and fifteen. Pounds was

one thing, too with Those Iowa state receivers him And
Jayleen nole, there they didn't play with the league. Quarterbacks

they made, adjustments they found a way to get, open they,
blocked you, know they worked through a lot of no
to make things. Happen SO i loved. HIM i think
he's a fantastic. PLAYER i think he's gonna be really
solid THE. Nfl and Then arroyo, Too, YEAH i. HADN'T
i hadn't talked too much about tight end For, seattle
but you're, right they could use. That And arroyo is
really really, interesting AND i Was i'd, wondered you, know

a few months, ago maybe even if he would slip
towards the top of the second bottom of the first,
round even with as athletic as he, is you, know
just basically like a two hundred and forty pounds, receiver darn.
NEAR i, mean they converted him over to tight, end
but he also is a willing, Blocker like he's a
better blocker than a lot of those hybrid move tight
ends that we end up.

Go up in the air and make plays on the
ball and just be like a big giant target with
a you, know super wide range that would be really
hard for linebackers and safeties to deal, WITH i think
is very very. Good so him or my Guy Mason,
TAYLOR i think would also be a good fit For
seattle if he's still.

what would you see a potential fits there For John.

SCHNEIDER i, LIKE i Like Ashton jellette the edge From
louisville or or a couple edges in that, range depending
on who. Falls But jellette was one that WHEN i
was going through it this, morning fell into the right
spot for. Them it could also, be you, know a
guy like Princey umntmelian the the guy from a from
an old miss or maybe they want to go inside
with defensive. Tackle BUT i, figured you, know there's, enough

there's enough defensive tackle talent and defensive end edge talent. Here,
uh that'll be there on day three THAT i think
these guys will be starting level players Like jilet's every down.
GUY i can move around a little, bit you, know
can bounce out and cover plays really really. Hard one
of the hardest playing guys in This in this, CLASS
i think a guy would be really. Versatile and then
with the other, ONE i think you can go a

number of different. WAYS i, Mean i've almost wondered if
they would go back to the offensive, line you, Know
i've almost wondered if they would do it. Again you,
know you Have Marcus bau, there if you Like Gray
zabel as a. Guard you even Have Jered, wilson the

other players down on that in that. Range we'll see
if al Far, Tate ratlie and those guys.

about they need to fix, you know, the interior that
offensive line. And to me, in this draft, Zabel was
absolutely the best interior offensive lineman in terms of versatility

IQ you know, teammates loved him, knows what he's doing.

You know, can handle.

Multiple different positions, could be a center, could be a guard,
could probably even play tackle in a pinch if you
really need him to do it. I think this guy's
just a really really steady, solid football player, a culture changer,
you know, possibly as well, who I think is just
going to do a ton to finally help, you know,
the Seahawks, fix some of that stuff inside and maybe
help get the run game going a little bit and

everything else. So to me, you know, finding a guy
who can be in front of Stam Darnold, which was
a big problem last year with him in Minnesota. Right
when their offensive line broke down, things kind of got
wobbly for him. So everything about the pick fit need
where they got him, I thought he could have gone higher.
I thought was great. I thought this was an outstanding pick.

Why would you take him over Donovan Jackson who moved
from guard to tackle and never allowed to sack the
rest of the year when Josh Simmons went down with
a torn Pateeller tendon Ay and Listen Nick against much
better competition, including a run through the playoffs Tennessee Oregon

I like Donovan Jackson, I even like Josh Simmons, but
to me, Zabel is the guy who I just it's
really really hard to find anything, including his run at
the Senior Bowl where he's overwhelmed, where he's out of place,
where he's not exactly where he needs to be, and yeah,
is there a type of risk there with you know,
he was playing at a lower level. Obviously the guy

like Donovan was sure, But at the same time, you know,
a lot of the appeal for Donovan Jackson was four
games at tackle or whatever it was, five six games
at tackle.

He was also sort of inconsistent as a guard earlier
in his career as well. I think Zabel technically, with
his technique and all that stuff, is a better player.
I don't know if he's physically a better player, but
it's also close. He's a very good athlete. I think
people kind of underrated that in the process as well.
So to me, he is He was unarguably a top
fifteen player in this class, and I thought it was

a great, great spot for them to find him.

find too. You find a lot of guys that come
through that have that say they can do this, or
you often see guys that played guard tackle that get
asked to play center in draft prep and they get

through it and it's what we'll see. But like this guy.
My favorite story about grays Abel. He told me this
actually a while ago when he was in high school. Right,
he was a sophomore in high school. He was a
starter on one of the best teams there in Dakota.
They were in the state championship game. He'd played tackle
all season at like, you know, fourteen years old. Okay,
they get to the halftime of the title game. The
team starting center breaks his hand. The coach goes comes

to grays Abel asks him if he asks him if
he's ever snapped the football before he says no, he says, okay,
well you got ten minutes to figure it out. He
figures it out, They go back out, they win the
state title and everything, you know, everything with him football wise,
just comes very very easily from a family of athletes.
So to me, he's just one of these unique guys
who's a grinder, you know, like who just finds a

way to get it done and doesn't really ever seem overwhelmed.
I think that's the one thing that I take away
from him the most, is like no challenge that was
put in front of him ever seemed too big. He
was also a guy that was offered a lot of
money to leave and he didn't. You know, one of
those guys too. I think that the character there with
him is really really high up, you know, close to
to like what it is with Will Campbell, who was

the top offensive lineman in the draft. I think he's
able and him are pretty similar in that sense.
