One to one point five. Ye, fam Madison's classic rock with the cars
on this back to work Monday. Also in Mondays with Matt the Voice the
Badgers Matt Lepey, He joins us, Matt, how are you? You
know it's going good today? Yourtime with us brought to everybody by Middleton
Ford. I want to throw thatout there as well. So let's just

(00:20):
dive right into Saturday. Matt,Badgers fell fifteen to six to Iowa,
And you know, I guess wecould say it was a defensive battle.
Badgers defense played really well, asdid that Iowa defense, but the offense
for the Badgers just really couldn't findtheir footing their groove if you will.
Of course, for everybody that watchedit. Ten and Mordecai he did get
hurt and he left that game aswell. So what were kind of your

(00:43):
impressions after, you know, callingthat game and thinking about it here over
the last couple of days. Yeah, I think, Yeah, defensive battle
is one way of putting it reallyhard to watch with the putting it,
you know, to be to beperfectly honest, I think, but I
think in Tash and I talked aboutit after the game It's a pretty simplistic
view, but sometimes simple is betterthan trying to, you know, do

(01:06):
any deep dive, analytical type ofa study. Here, you've got an
Iowa team that really knows who itis, and it plays really good defense.
It has exceptional special teams, whichthey've been hallmarks of that program forever.
Their offense is bad, they knowthat they've got a backup quarterback who
has limitations, including experience. He'sbarely played in his college career, so

(01:30):
they kept it very, very closeto the best. It's almost like Wisconstant
got ropidote in that the old OmahammadAlio because they weren't going to make a
mistake. They were going to justdo what they do. Whereas that's their
identity Wisconsin. I just think it'sstill trying to find it, you know.
I thought in the last couple ofgames with Purdue of Rutgers they were

(01:53):
starting to form an identity. Theywere establishing the run a little bit more
effectively early in games, and inthe first half on Saturday, they were
throwing the ball around a lot.Now Brailn had to get checked out,
missed a little missed a little bitof time of there in that first half.
But there were a lot of passingattempts in that game, and it
didn't seem like there was much atall of a commitment. It seemed there

(02:15):
was no very little commitment trying torun it. And then you know,
the second guessing becomes very predictable.Wisconsin goes for it on fourth and one
at the thirteen, misses it,and that's the classic. If they make
it, it's daring, it's bold, it's aggressive. If they don't make
it, what the hell are youdoing? Why didn't you take the points?
I really I dismissed that kind ofthing. My head scratcher. Was

(02:38):
just what they were trying to doin the first half of the game,
so they still had It was thekind of game you figured ben was going
to be low scoring going in.Iowa made one big play on the eighty
two yard touchdown run. Otherwise itdid very little offensively in the course of
the game. But Wisconsin's offense ithad the two field goal drives in the

(02:59):
third corps and otherwise, did youknow, next to nothing the rest of
the way. So it just itwas a step back, which which happens
in the course of a year ifyou're rebuilding or building or however you want
to term it. Frustrating. Iget that very frustrating, but it is
a part of it. Sometimes you'regoing to have a couple of steps forward
and you're going to have one bigstep back. And now the fun part

(03:22):
of all of this from my perchis just seeing how they come back from
that, playing an Illinois team thatwas reeling until it went into Maryland and
one on a last second field goal, which surprised a lot of people.
They responded, well, really, well, we'll see how this concert response.
Yeah, and kind of going backto the first half of the lost

(03:42):
to Iowa from this past Saturday,as you mentioned, the Badgers ran the
ball six times, they threw ittwenty three times. So and Luke Fugel
post game, I mean he evenkind of alluded to it. It was
almost like the Badger's got I wantto use his exact verbic here, kind
of got lulled into throwing the footballagainst that tough Iowa defense. So now,
with Tanner Mordecai out for a while, I have not seen a complete

(04:04):
timetable on broke. Yeah, brokein hand, and I don't know that
timetable, don't know, but hedid break his hands. Okay, you
got to figure it's going to beBraidon Locke show here for the foreseeable future.
Yeah. And what's also interesting tonote there is the Badgers they want
to get back to running the footballbecause that is really what has worked so
well this year. But now you'vegot Chess Mlucy out and you've got Tanner

(04:24):
Mornechai out. Badgers have fifteen rushingtouchdowns in the season and eight of those
were from Tanner and Chez. SoBraylon Hellen the only healthy one left on
that roster who's got a rushing touchdown. So it's going to be interesting to
see how they use Braydon Locke inthis game against Illinois and really what this
offense looks like because you think Mattthey want to get back to running the
football. Yeah, and there's goingto be more on the plate for Brail

(04:46):
and they know it'd a thirty carrydeal. I don't know about that,
but there's going to be more onhis plate. They're gonna need Jackson Acer
a little bit more. He didn'thave very many carries in the game on
Saturday against Isowa. Well, youknow, as a pretty going to get
drop off from the Rutgers game,so you figure they're gonna have to get
more out of him. Uh,you know, Braydon can run it,

(05:08):
but he's the number two, sothat you probably want to be careful with
that. But you know he's he'sfor a guy again with really next to
no experience. Visiting with him backin the spring, he's and then again
in fall camp. He has alot of poise for a young guy.
You talk to him, he wouldn'tthink red shirt freshman. Just in talking

(05:30):
with him. Now, that's differentthan than playing. You know, I
thought he had a couple of flashesin the game on Saturday and then other
other instances where he showed that thelack of experience. So it's gonna be
it's gonna be fascinating to see whatthis what this offense is going to look
like. But you've got to thinkand as you know, as you mentioned
Luke me Finkle mentioned in the postgame, you gotta think is maybe gonna be

(05:55):
a directive here. We're gonna needto We're gonna need to lead on this
offensive line to do its thing andget the running game going and do everything
you can to help a young quarterbackhave the best chance to have success.
Talk with the voice of the Badgers, Matt Leapey is time with Us,
brought to everybody by Middleton Ford hereon i BFM. So, as we

(06:15):
mentioned brad Lock, you will startthis coming Saturday for the Badgers, and
it's a road game against Illinois.Matt, you mentioned that win. The
Aliini are coming off of twenty sevento twenty four over Maryland. Now this
game obviously is going to mean justa little bit more, do you know,
not only to Badger fans, butalso to the head coach of Illinois
as well. So kind of giveus a preview of the ALIGNI and what
we may see Saturday. Well, they've had their struggling offensively too. I

(06:38):
mean, the twenty seven points wasbig for them. They're only averaging twenty
per game, which, by theway, Wisconsin is actually averaging a little
bit more points per game than whatthey have the last three years. Not
a lot, but it'll put alittle bit. But Illinois has struggled Mighty
League scoring. They were able tofix that to an extent. They've in
fairness, they've had a lot ofinjuries. They're running back has been hit

(07:00):
pretty hard. They were running outa couple of freshmen against Maryland on Saturday.
Their quarterback is a transfer from OldMiss. He threw it around pretty
well in the game against the Turps. He's got some gifted receivers, a
kid by the name of Isaiah Williamswho originally was a quarterback in the Illinois
system, and then when Brett Bretttook go over, he said, hey,
you know, we think wide receivercould be really good for you,

(07:24):
and it has been. The guy'scaught forty two passes so far this year.
Defensively, they were one of thebest in the country last year,
but they had a lot of thekey pieces ended up being high draft picks
in the NFL last April, sothey're not as good, but they're still
good up front. They've got acouple of guys kid then Keith Randolph miss

(07:46):
last week's game, but he's reallygood on the defensive line. Treers On
Newton really good on the defensive line. They've battled through injuries, but they
to be able to keep Maryland apretty good offense down the way it did
that, I think that that bodeswell, you know, some signs of
improvement. Brett's a former Badger. You got Aaron Henry, a former Badger

(08:07):
defensive coordinator. Antonio Panello's a formerBadger, is on the staff, Barton
Miller a former staffer in Wisconsin.Jim Leonard is an analyst on the staff.
So you've got a lot of veryobvious and intriguing storyline, but the
most important one is from here ishow is Wisconsin going to be able to

(08:28):
bounce back and it start to findits identity either again or period as they
get ready for the second half ofthe season Wisconsin Illinois Saturday. You can
hear that game here on ib AFFAM kickoff set for two thirty pregame starts
at twelve thirty. So as wetransition kind of away from football for a
minute, Matt's I want to talkto some badgerman's hoops. Ren White scrim

(08:48):
is yesterday at the Cole Center. If it matters, White one sixty nine
to fifty one over the Red team. But you were there, what did
you see? Yeah? Throughout therecords when the rest face the White team,
unlike any other uh they have Iwhat I think is that the makeup
of a team with a lot ofpieces. Uh. Nolan Winter got people

(09:09):
excited yesterday a young man out ofout of Minneapolis, out out of Lakeville.
Uh, and it's uh, hehad to you know, scored a
lot of points. He can shootit. He's a big he can step
outside with a good shooting touch, you'll go hit the glass. He's someone
who I think is could really youknow, provide some help for Stephen Crowell

(09:31):
and in there for instances. Yesterdaythey had them both on the floor together.
So that that that's intriguing. Otherfreshman, you know, John Blackwell
is someone who you know, maybeis ahead of the curve as far as
freshmen go. Here on the defensiveend, Uh, they they've got a
lot of interesting pieces. Chuckie Hepburnlooks great. You know, he's he's
shaved some some weight. He looksreally good. Max Klesbitt is still all

(09:56):
day tough. Tyler Wall you knowparticul with Wall at Hepburn. They were
they were playing through a lot lastyear they had with the sprained ankle with
with Tyler and Chucky you know, had had the need that he had to
kind of nurses as best he couldto get through the season. They look
healthy, they look good. Thekey is depth, you know, can

(10:20):
they handle either different looks that they'regoing to get from opponents, foul trouble,
that type of thing. They wererazor thin last year, and the
belief is they've got a little bitmore depth, more pieces, better competition
in practices every day. And youknow, I think the whope Wisconsin basketball

(10:41):
has has had a rep of beingsneaky good, not talked about a lot
over the years. There's a feelingthat this could be another one of those
sneaky good Wisconsin teams. Like it'sso succited here as we're way through October.
But the Benjamin's basketball team next upexit abition game against you W Stevens

(11:01):
Point that is on November the first, and you can hear that on our
sisters station as well in news Talkthirteen to ten WYBA. But Matt,

La Pey Podcast. You and thevoice of the Packers Wain Larvy. You
guys are set to record another episodehere soon. Yeah, we're gonna visit
with Todd roseiact on Milwaukee Journal Setin'llbe reporter for multiple things, but for

(11:22):
today's purposes Brewers Baseball, I justget his thoughts on the season to put
a rap on it as best wecan, obviously, a couple of unanswered
questions one in particular, but thoughtsof the playoffs format and then where maybe
he sees the Brewers, you know, moving forward with with roster makeup,
so on and so forth. Butit should be a fun little baseball chat

(11:43):
