(00:00):
One to one point five. I'bafm Madison's classic rock some queen there as
we now welcome in the voice ofthe Wisconsin Badgers, Matt Lepe Matt's how
are you today? Well, Ben, how's it going? It is going
good today? Glad to catch upfollowing the game from this past Saturday night
Wisconsin and Ohio State. Wisconsin loss. Everybody knows that by now twenty four
to ten. So Matt, Ithink I want to start on defense for
(00:23):
the Badgers. What a game thiswas against Ohio State. I know,
maybe their offense hasn't been as highpowered as we've seen in the past,
at least when it comes to pointsthat they've put up against opponents. But
this batter defense. They forced threeturnovers by Ohio State, including nine tackles
for loss and four sacks of Kylemccordy. He threw two picks as well.
So I mean it was just areally good showing I thought from the
(00:45):
defense, Yeah, it was withouta doubt. They You know, Ohio
State has two elite playmakers. MarvinHarrison junior, who might be the most
talented player in college football. Hewas He was terrific for Ohio State.
And then they got Trayon Henderson backat running back. He had missed the
previous three games, and he wasreally, really good. He's a home
run hitting type of a threat atthat position, and he ran for one
(01:08):
hundred and sixty plus. But still, you know, to hole Ohio State
to twenty four points, it's aboutnine or so below their average, And
you're right, they're not as highpowered so far as they've been the past
few years, but it's still apretty good offense. And to be able
to force the turnovers the way theydid, getting the end zone interception for
(01:29):
Preston Zachman that was terrific, andRicardo Hallman his fifth interception, and they
were able to knock the ball outearly in the game on a fourth down
on the fourth down play. They'regetting better, yeah, they are.
We're we're seeing the seeing the evolutionof it. We talked about it on
the offensive side, but we're seeinga defense that you know, maybe statistically
(01:49):
isn't as good as some that wehave seen over the past several years,
but still it's allowing less than twentypoints per game. And when you're doing
that, you're you're giving yourself achance just about any week, So it
was encouraging from that perspective what theywere able to how they performed on Saturday
Night Song with the Voice of theBadgers Matt Lepe his time with Us brought
(02:10):
or presented by Middleton Ford. Hereon, I be afm putting a rap
on the Badgers and Ohio State fromthis past Saturday. So as we moved
to the offensive side of the ball. Brandon Locke eighteen for thirty nine,
one hundred and sixty five yards anda touchdown as well no interceptions the offense.
They weren't able to move the ballagainst Ohio State, which was really
encouraging. I love Phil Longo again, just he's got such a creative minds
(02:32):
on the offensive side of the ball, drawing different plays up, which in
my opinion, the Badger's offense waslacking over the past few years as well.
Now there were some injuries here.Braylan Allen went out, didn't come
back in the second half. ShimRay DK also got hurt. I heard
coach Fickle earlier this morning. Hedidn't really give a ton of updates on
Braylan Allen. Have you heard anythingabout either Braylan or shim Ray DK no,
(02:55):
no, I have not. Sohe's got a good align with what
with what Luke Tickle was talking aboutearlier this morning. So it but certainly
it's you got to think it changedthe changed the complexion of the game a
little bit. And now they scoredthree points in the first half with Brailn.
But you know, he's a guywho had you know, had ten
carries fifty yards, so he wason a pretty good pace and you know
(03:15):
it's one of those what what mighthave been kind of kind of games And
the same thing with you know,Jim ray Dk being out. That's a
that's a hit to the receiving course. So it's you know, that's the
obvious storyline here this week and movingforward with this team because it's still there's
a division title that could still bethere for the taking, see, but
(03:36):
you would like to be as closeto full strength with your with your top
players as possible. So I thinkeverybody's kind of kind of nervous here moving
forward. But you mentioned Braydon Locke, and I think he's a guy that
you really do have to look beyondwhat you see on a stat sheet because
the other night, again there werecatchuble balls that were not caught. Uh.
(03:57):
He did a great job on acouple of occasions of escaping sacks and
was able to throw the ball away, and a couple others he just had
to throw into a dirt with somepressure. This guy really does have poise
and a physical toughness, a mentaltoughness to him. It looks like they've
got something with him. You know, we'll see where Tanner Mordecai is in
(04:18):
his recovery, but I think ithas to be really encouraging for this staff
to know that for however long Mordecaihas to be out, there is growing
trust and a significant level of trustfor Braidon Locke and what he brings to
this offense. Yeah, even justseeing Brandon Lock throw in a tight windows
(04:38):
kind of throwing receivers open, ifyou will, throwing that ball before the
receivers have broke on their route, all encouraging things. And as we've talked
about so much, it's just theexperience that's what Braidon Lock needed. He
seems the beginning then now, butof course we'll see what happens here as
Tanner Mordechai starts to you know, get healthy after that's broken hand, he
suffer back in the game against Iowa. But you know, I wanted to
(05:00):
throw this year away. And Istrictly speak as a Badger football fan,
and I don't know, maybe thelast three, four, maybe even five
years, whenever the Badgers have goneup against in Ohio State or a Michigan
for example, as well, Ifeel like us as fans, we go
into these games just thinking, allright, this game is probably over before
it even started. But I haveto say watching the game Saturday, and
(05:24):
I did from start to finish, this was the first Badger football game in
a long time that I really feltlike they could keep up with the likes
of in Ohio States. And yes, I know the talent, it's not
quite at the same level. I'mboth squads there, the Badgers and the
Buckeyes. But did you kind ofhave that feeling too, that Wisconsin they
could hang with teams like Ohio State, the upper echelon, if you will,
(05:47):
of the Big Ten. Yeah,I think the issue is it's really
been I know Michigan has won theleague the last two years, but the
problem, you know, in thedecade twenty ten to twenty twenty or twenty
twenty one, it was at OhioState problem because they had Wisconsin's fared pretty
well yas Michigan. The last timethey played Michigan a couple of years ago.
You know, they got trounced,But Wisconsin had trounced Michigan in twenty
(06:09):
nineteen and twenty twenty. They beatthem in twenty seventeen, so you know,
the Paul Christ Badger teams fared prettywell. Really, you know,
they were able to kind of goright down the middle with the hardball coach
Michigan teams. It's Ohio State that'sbeen the issue, right And there have
been games where Wisconsin has played themwell, the twenty nineteen Big Ten Championship
Game, twenty seventeen Big Ten Championshipgame in particular, that was a one
(06:32):
score game. There have been someovertime games over the last ten years,
a couple of them matter of factin Madison. But there have been other
games where they've been boat raced. And I do think you saw Saturday night
there's still a talent gap. Let'sdon't fool ourselves here in Ohio State has
a lot more in terms of elitetalented college football players than most schools.
(06:58):
The overwhelming majority of programs of thecountry. But you are seeing a growing
you know, belief and an understandingof the messages that the Fickle and his
staff are sending and the process tobuilding what has been you know, further
building what has been established here overtime. So yeah, it's uh,
you know, it's a whole moralvictory type of thing. I'm not going
(07:20):
down that path. But I leftthe stadium thinking, Okay, they've got
something going here. Now it's justa matter of you know, developed,
continuing to develop the players you have, let you know, giving them the
opportunity or those guys giving themselves theopportunity to be those difference making guys,
the playmakers. And then you know, through recruiting and if it's if it's
(07:44):
high school, if it's the portal, whatever it is. But I do
think you're you're seeing a culture, and the culture was always good here,
but you're seeing you know, Fickle'sway and his staff of what they're doing
and how they want to do it. I left there disappointed for him,
but thinking, I think they're startingto you know, the players, everybody's
(08:05):
starting to figure this out now andhopefully, for their sake, they can
have their best month of the yearcoming up, but obviously they help us.
Some key players will have something todo with that. Yeah, health
is such a big thing too,and that is so hard to kind of,
like, you know, describe inwords. It's just kind of a
feeling I think fans get when theywatch these games. And I don't know,
I left with a really good feeling, as you did as well.
(08:26):
It sounded like they're after the gameSaturday night. But next up for the
Badgers they match up with Indiana inBloomington this coming Saturday match. You got
your hoo's your scouting report for us. Yeah, they you know, they
really having a tough year. Butthey played Penn State. That game was
in doubt in the final two minutes. You know, Indiana kicked the field
goal to tie the game and attwenty four, and then Penn State goes
(08:50):
down. They hit a big,big pass play for a touchdown and then
there's a safety ball in the lastyou know, a minute and a half
two minutes of the game and itends up being thirty three to twenty four.
But Indiana, Indiana has had injuries. I think this is a year
where their head coach Tom Allen istrying to find the right pieces, and
it seems as though he has settledon a quarterback helped permitting Brendan Sorosby played
(09:13):
pretty well against Penn State. Hegot banged up late in the game.
So it's a storyline to watch somepretty talented players individual players. Offensively,
they've struggled to score. You know, they're not gonna not gonna lie about
that. But the way they cameout against Penn State was was pretty impressive.
So it's something to it's something towatch. And the other thing ben
this is it's a road game,it's an early kick. I'm guessing it's
(09:39):
going to be a fairly lightly attendedgame in Bloomington. They're fired up about
basketball down there, much more sothan football, So well, the Badgers
are going to have to you know, the atmosphere is going to be quite
a bit different, I think thisweek as opposed to Saturday night at Camp
Randall Stadium. But this whole themehere with Fickle and his staff has been
play your best ball. Now youget into the month of November, so
(10:01):
you know, whatever the atmosphere is, they've got to create their own energy.
Otherwise they're going to be vulnerable,I think with this team if we
haven't learned anything else, We've learnedthat you better not expect anything to be
easy for this Wisconsin team this season. You can say that about everybody in
the West. Yeah. Yeah.Talking with the Voice of the Badgers,
Matt Lefe his time with Us presentedby Middleton Ford Mondays with Matt Wisconsin and
(10:26):
Indiana. As we mentioned Saturday, our pregame coverage here on IBAFM starts at
nine, kickoff a set for eleven. Matt. Before I let you go,
I wanted to bring this up formerBadger in now Baltimore Ravens right guard
Kevin Zeitler. He has now beatevery single team in the NFL and he's
only the third offensive lineman in leaguehistory to accomplish this feat. The Ravens
(10:46):
did that in their win yesterday. So Wisconsin's produced a lots of good offensive
linemen. You've seen quite a fewin your time with the Badgers here.
Does he rank right up there withsome of the best? I think so?
I really do just a tough Imean, of course, an offensive
line is going to be tough. But this guy, you know, his
idea of a good time is uh, you know, his Christmas morning thing
(11:11):
is getting in a good lift, you know, at the gym and then
going back home and working on hispass protection work and all that stuff.
He is. We talked about quarterbacksbeing you know, football junkies all that.
Kevin Zeitler is a football junkie. Is like that here, really intense.
It's been fun. We stay intouch sporadically. Even now. If
(11:31):
the basketball team is playing down inMaryland and the schedule works out, Kevin
will come to the game, heand his lovely wife Sarah, and it's
it's it's been a lot of funbeing able to visit with him when when
the situation exists to do that. But this guy's had a really really good
career, you know, Cincinnati,Cleveland, and you know what he's doing
now with with the Ravens, Andyeah, I do think it is in
(11:52):
a glamour position the position he plays. But every coach I know who has
worked with him loves him because theyknow how much he loves football and all
the work that goes into it.He just loves all that stuff. And
most importantly, he's really productive onSundays or whatever day of the week the
(12:13):
Ravens are playing. He's been really, really good for a while now.
Yeah, that's very cool. Andas a fellow offensive lineman at Hart myself,
I love shining some light in thebig guys up front doing the dirty
work. It's awesome. So Matt, thank you for your time as always.
All right, Ben, good talkingto you. Take care. Yes
again, you will hear Matt Lape, Mark Touser, Mike Keller as well
(12:33):
in the pregame coverage coming up Saturday, nine am kickoff set for eleven Wisconsin,
Indiana right here on ib FEM
