One at one point five, IBFM Mattison's classic ronk and and Nancy Wilson
hearts on this back to work Monday, also in Mondays with Matt the voice
to the Badgers, Matt Lapey,he is with us, Matt, how
are you? I'm doing well.I had a crush on Nancy Wilson back
in the day, and I wasgrowing up with in the heart, So
I just thought i'd throw that outthere. Yeah, funny fun facts about

(00:21):
Matt Lafair. I love it.Well. You know, I was going
to dive run in and say,you know what. The sun came up
Sunday morning. It continued to comeup today too. I know some imagination
where they were having a rough SaturdayBadgers fell to Indiana twenty to fourteen,
and really Matt's it was kind ofmore the same of what we've seen throughout
this year to this point. Slowstart early, they get things going,

(00:42):
but yet they couldn't finish. Isthat what you saw as well? Yeah?
Absolutely, the things that they wantedto emphasize last week. Start the
ball or start the game fast,be able to run the ball, stop
the run. They at times ranit pretty well, didn't run it a
lot, you know, through itforty one times and in the fourth order
couldn't score opportunities were there to doso, a kind of a bizarre sequence

(01:06):
where you get a delay a gameinside the Indiana twenty and then there's a
sack and just it's frustrating. Ithought Ben at the beginning of the year
would be clunky when you're when you'rechanging what you're doing. I thought by
now it would it would smooth out. But in fairness, you've got an
offensive backfield that's completely different than oncestarted the year. I think that that's

(01:26):
legit, but still missed opportunities,uh you know open receivers where the throw
wasn't good, or you know, catchable passes that haven't been caught. It's
been an ongoing problem penalties that havereally hurt this team. It's a team
with very very little margin for error, and it does just enough of the

(01:47):
self inflicted variety to cost it dearly. Talking with the voice of the Badger's
Matt Levee his time with Us presentedby Middleton Forward recamping the Badgers twenty to
fourteen lost to Indiana from this pastSaturday, I think you great choice of
words there, Matt kind of youknow, self inflicted mistakes and even postgame
hearing coach Fickle talk there, andthen even hearing him this morning he talked

(02:08):
about how this was the first gamepostgame I should say, he really got
after these guys and really was like, guys, this is all right here
for you, the self inflicted mistakes, and then he mentioned this morning too.
They practice on Sundays, and hedid say that yesterday he thought could
have been their best Sunday practice allyear. He didn't say, you know,

(02:28):
everything is you know righted now withthe ship, if you will,
But I think that's important too tokind of note that the guys now in
that locker room, the players, they got, you know, an ask
to and if you will from theirhead coach. So we'll kind of see
how they respond going forward here.Yeah, with three games left, I
mean, you know, Iowa wasthe one team and a four way tie
going into last weekend, Iowa wasthe one team to win. Not real

(02:53):
pretty but no, they're not areal pretty team, but they're winning.
They're seven and two, so they'redoing what But I think even beyond trying
to win a division now, you'rejust trying to trying to find a way
to be consistently better, especially onoffense. You could say in all three
phases. But look, the defenseis played well enough for this team to

(03:15):
win games. I mean, atleast from my vantage point, the offense
has not. You know, it'shere's one for you, though, Ben
Wisconsin in the Big Ten, WestWisconsin still has the best points per game
in the division. Believe it ornot. Nationally, it ranks ninetieth out

(03:36):
of one hundred and thirty three programsin the Football Bowl Subdivision. The other
six rank in the one hundreds atI mean, it shows you that there's
just not good offense in this division. And you know when you have to.
If you're giving up twenty points andyou're not winning games and you just

(03:57):
leave us so much out there, that's tough times. They show flashes without
a doubt, you know, BysonGreen with the long catch and run on
a fifty four yard touchdown. WillPauling is having a really nice year I
think for Wiscontinent as their top slotreceiver. But the problem is they just
haven't been consistently good enough. Andit doesn't matter what sport you're talking about.

(04:18):
If you can't be consistently good atwhat you're trying to do, you're
probably not going to have a verygood season. So we'll see if they
can straighten this out. They gotthree games left and see if they still
can't put some good football together andfinish this season as best they possibly can.
Yeah, defense playing well, asyou mentioned there. I mean,

(04:39):
they have their spurts where yes,you know, they don't play as good
as they show us in different portionsof the game. I mean, but
they held the Indiana to what thirtysix yards in the second half and just
three points in the game Saturday. But when we look at the offense too,
I think it's hard to be consistentwhen you're dealing with all of these
injuries. You're starting quarterbacks, yourtop two tail bags are out, and

(05:00):
then arguably your top whine out well, I mean he was also out this
past Saturday, and him Ray TK. So I think it's hard to be
consistent with injuries, which I thinkis important to remind people, right,
Yeah, I do. I tryto live in a fact based world,
which doesn't always work, especially insports. But those are those are facts

(05:21):
you know you've got. But Ihaven't said that. I think Braydon Locke
has a lot of promise. Hehad a tough day on Saturday. You
can't deny that. But you don'thave Braylan Allen, you don't have Chess
mlucy. But I still I thinkJackson Aker and Kate Yacamelli they did some
pretty good things. I know thefumble from Yakamelly was was a costly one,

(05:42):
but those two guys combined for betterthan ninety yards on twenty one carries.
That's pretty good. You know, you feel like, all right,
you've got a little something going there. I mean, I don't know in
retrospect, if maybe you try tofeed him the ball a little bit more
one or the other, if notboth and not rely on forty plus pass,
you know, those are easy secondguesses, I imagine. But in

(06:04):
talking with Luke before the game,he talked about they still wanted to run
the ball, knowing that they probablyweren't going to have Braylan Allen, but
they still wanted to try to poundaway. But the injuries are legit.
I mean, that is a partof it. I mean most programs,
you take away you're starting quarterback andyour top two running backs, and you
might struggle and you're leader, You'reunquestioned leader in the receiver's room. But

(06:28):
we also know how we know howit works, and I understand where fans
get very frustrated to it, thelack of consistency. Talk with the Voice
of the Badger's Matt Leapee, histime, presented to us byd Middleton Ford
here on IBAFM. Now we lookforward to Northwestern. They're at Camp Randall
Stadium this coming Saturday. That gamewill kick off at two thirty. Are
coverage starts at twelve thirty and theWildcats match. They're coming off well a

(06:51):
loss. It was ugly against Iowa, but it was only ten to seven,
and it was a kind of aunique game. They were in Chicago
playing yet Wrigley Field. Now,I don't think the Wildcats may have thought
they'd be four and five and twoand four in Big Ten play at this
point of the season, after allthe transition they went through with their head
coach coming into this year. Butthey're not playing horrible right now. Well

(07:13):
they're not. They're I mean,they're a team. Given what was going
on with you know, the wholethe story with Pat Fitzgerald, I think,
and then they were. They hada really bad year last year.
People wondering, and I think itwas a legitimate question whether Northwestern would win
a game. Yeah, and andthe fact that they'd won four and it
you know, they lose on afield goal on the closing seconds to to

(07:34):
Iowa on Saturday. They are anotherone of the offensively challenged teams, to
be sure, But defensively they've beenThey've been pretty solid. They've got some
really good linebackers, guys who've beenaround the program a little bit like a
Bryce Gallagher and a Xander Mueller. They've played well enough on that side of
the ball to hang in there.Last Saturday, missed opportunities, you know,

(07:59):
they have four that the goal linecan't score. They eventually get in.
They score in the last couple ofminutes and I was able to make
a couple of plays on offense, which has been a dilemma for that program
for a while. But credit DeaconHill let him down the field and they
kick a long field goal to winthe game. But as I've been saying,
and I'm sounded like a broken recordwith Wisconsin now, you know,

(08:22):
Northwestern still is a struggling team.Nebraska took a loss. They've got the
Huskers coming in next week. Minnesotalost at home. But there is no
reason to think that anything is goingto be a walk in the park for
this Badgers team, because as longas you're struggling the way they are to
score, like just like any teamin the West, you can't expect anything

(08:46):
to be easy. And I wouldimagine it's going to be another tough game
for Wisconsin coming up on Saturday, and one that's probably not going to be
particularly pretty. It's kind of thePackers. You know, they're offensively challenged
too, but at least the Packerswon. Yes, today, think you
feel a little better about those guys, even though you know the team they
beat wasn't good without its quarterback. But so what, you won the game,

(09:07):
so you feel better about it.Yeah, winning cures everything. But
Wisconsin and Northwestern Saturday game will kickoff two thirty. Our pregame covered starts
at twelve thirty with the Badger RadioNetwork. Mike handle Heller will handle the
pregame. Anyways, Hey, let'smove on a Badger hoops Matt tip off
the season tonight Arkansas States at theCole Center. To me, I've been
so focused on football. I'm kindof, you know, forgetting that it's

(09:28):
already, uh November the sixth, and basketball is here. So give us
kind of a preview of this Benjamin'sbasketball team. Well, I think it's
gonna be a fun team to watch. Aj Store has an ability to really
excite fans. There's an explosiveness tohis game. They do feel like they
have considerably more depth than what theyhad a year ago. Other guys are
are continuing to improve. Marcus Ilver, They've been pretty pleased with him.

(09:52):
See if he can work into therotation. You know, they've got ninety
two percent of their scoring back froma year ago. They're just hoping to
get more scoring than they had aseason ago. Tonight could be kind of
interesting then, because Arkansas State peopledon't know anything about him here, but
I can tell you that their coachis comes from Alabama, Brian Hodgson.

(10:15):
He was an assistant under Nate Oaates. And what I'm telling you that because
the style of play for Arkansas State, they want to get up and down,
they want to shoot a lot ofthrees, lay ups and threes,
but they want to really ramp uptheir tempo. Seems as though they've got
some athleticism to be able to dothat and then business really picks up.
Even tonight could be pretty tricky. But Friday, you got Tennessee, which

(10:37):
is a top ten caliber team. You know, the Providence a week from
tomorrow, Arizona's on the schedule, obviously, Marquette, They've got Virginia.
It's a non conference schedule that willa generate I think a lot of interest
with college basketball fans around here.Be present quite a challenge for this Wisconsin
team. But I think you knowthat they can learn a lot about them

(11:00):
themselves here in the in the nextseveral weeks because of the caliber of opponents
they're going to be facing. Itsounds like a clash of styles Tonight at
the Cole Center, Wisconsin in ArkansasState. We've got that game for you
here on I B a. MOur. Pregame coverage gets going to six
with this guy, the voice ofthe Badgers, Matt Leveey. Tip Off
is set for seven. Brian,Butch's gonna be with you tonight Matt as

(11:20):
well. That's kind of exciting.Yeah, we had fun last week working
the exhibition game together, which wasthat was a lot of fun. He
just he brings that former player savvyand he's just he's just a really good
dude. So in fact, welike him so much. Ben, we're
going to have it on the Larvyand the Pay podcast, and we're gonna
we've recorded today and we'll hope todrop that tomorrow. Get Butchy's insights because

(11:41):
he's been he's been cranked up.He's been calling me about college basketball stuff
about the last two you know, however long six weeks or so, so
I know he's pretty fired up aboutthis. So we're looking forward to it.
That's awesome, And you just youtook me right into the podcast.
I was going to talk about thattoo, but just kind of a remindered
everybody. Every episode of the AvingPay podcast available wherever you enjoy your podcast,

(12:03):
whether that be iHeartRadio, Apple,Spotify, all of those great podcast
locations, Matt. Before I letyou go, the Texans big win yesterday.
CJ Stroud, form Ohio State quarterbackplayed really well. But I think
you know where I'm going with thatlaugh there. The Texans had some injuries
when it comes to their kicker, and what do you know, former Badger
would step in to kind of bethe hero of the day yesterday. Darry

(12:26):
a good yea man. Yeah,it's so fun to see that. You
know, Darry just a great firstof all, a great dude. And
I guess I say that about probablyhundreds of athletes I've dealt with around here.
But he's one of those guys whojust you carved the niche, you
know, for himself here and youknow, wherever they needed to be,

(12:46):
stepped in and played some pretty goodrunning back. And now he's been in
the NFL for several years and justyou know, one of those guys you
love having on your team because ahe's a good football player, but I
think a great teammate. And youknow, he talked apparently about having you
get involved in a kicking contest andI'm messing around in his college time.
I don't recall the specifics of that, but I'll take his word for it.

(13:09):
And to see him, you know, knocking through like like he's done
it before, like, all right, good for you. So it's pretty
exciting. He had Sam Decker. They they developed a pretty good friendship in
their time on campus, and Iknow Sam was tweeting about it. He
was really excited, and you know, I think and with you know Paul
christ In talking with him so manytimes when when he was a head coach.

(13:33):
There are certain players he just lovedto have around. Uh, it's
a lengthy list, but Daria Goombawallyis very much a part of that.
So you can imagine the feeling inthe locker room on the sideline after he
you know, kicked the field goal, and just the feeling after the game.
Great for the Texans and and justhad to be really cool to see

(13:54):
how excited his teammates were that, you know, Darry steps up and goes
all you know, all pro placekicker and hit the clutch field goal for
him. Yeah, he became thefirst non kicker or punter to make a
field goal in a season since twothousand and four regular season, I should
add, so that was pretty cool. But Matt as always, thank you
for your time. I appreciate it, all right, Ben talking next week?

(14:15):
Yes, sounds good. Matt Lape. You can hear him tonight.
