in the Voice of the Badgers,Matt lepe Mondays with Matt, presented by
Middleton Ford Matts. How are you, sir doing well? Man? How
(00:20):
you doing doing good? Are youready for the snow? Ready or not?
Here it is? Yeah, we'llsee how much we actually get.
I don't know. I mean ifwe get up toward eight inches or so,
it's going to be interesting. Butthankfully Badger hoops. There's no game
tomorrow night. It's Wednesday against OhioState, which we will dive into.
But I want to go back tothis past Saturday. Tyler Wall scored seventeen
(00:41):
points in the twenty first ranks andBadgers took down Nebraska eighty eight to seventy
two to snap the Cornhuskers five gamewinning streak as well. But Matt,
this was a game where the Badgersreally were hitting shots from all over the
floor shot fifty five percent. Alsowent thirteen of twenty six from beyond the
arc as well. Yeah, it'sone of those games were as Brian Butch
and I were talking about, youknow, sometimes everything just falls into place,
(01:03):
and that was what happened offensively forthis team. Thirty six points in
the paint, thirty nine points fromthe outside, and those thirteen made threes
and made half of their three pointattempts in the game. It was really
good. When you're when you're scoringat all levels, you know, inside
mid range and then and then fromthe outside, kind of hard to be
(01:25):
and they you know, about onepoint three per possession, one point three
points per possession, which was youknow those key stats. If you're better
than one point per possession, you'redoing really really well. But they had
really good scoring balance. The benchpoints were significant. You know, John
Blackwell once again was very productive, and then they got Connor Resiging going,
(01:46):
so hopefully that's something he can buildfrom. But this team been really as
well as it's been playing, hadnot been shooting the three pointer particularly well.
I don't know if fifty percent isgoing to be something that's going to
happen with regularity. That would bea pretty big ask. But if this
team can become more dangerous because theyhave guys who you know, can hit
(02:06):
those shots, and if they canmore consistently than a really good offense becomes
even better. And you mentioned counterseagon there. He led the way in
terms of bench scoring twelve points thispast Saturday in the victory over Nebraska.
I know he was dealing with aback injury. Does he look to be
like he's getting back into the formthat we saw especially last year. Well,
(02:29):
I'm not ready to say back inthe form of last year yet because
it's one game, I know, but great Guard has talked about seeing some
things recently in practice from him that'sbeen encouraging, you know, as frustrating
as it's probably been for Connor. They've been impressed with how he comes in
every day ready to go to workinstead of just pouting. So the matchups
(02:51):
were right. I thought it wasin what you mentioned as it was really
intriguing to see Connor go in earlyin the game. They weren't even at
the halfway point of the first half. They were a whole shale changes.
He was part of it. Youknow, the matchups were right, the
time was right to do it,and he was able to knock down some
shots. I think a lot oftimes with players, particularly guys like Connor
who can be prolific three point shooters, when you're slumping, but you knock
(03:15):
down the first one, then youget going. It's like in baseball when
you're in an zero four slump, you know, an oh for twenty whatever,
then you get a base it andall of a sudden things start to
fall into play. So hopefully forhim that'll be the case. But I
think for him to have a chanceto stay on the floor, the production
at the other end is going tobe very important. Doug is a work
(03:37):
in progress. Defensively played pretty well, played well on that any other day,
and that needs to continue. Yes, let's talk with the Voice of
the Badger's Matt lepe Mondays with Mattpresented by Middleton Ford here on IBFFEN.
So Matt. Since his batter teamwas blown out against Providence back on November
fourteenth, they've won ten of thenext eleven games, none of those victories
(03:58):
coming by double fig averaging almost seventysix points per game, the most in
the Great Guard era. What kindof happened or what kind of flipped for
this team after that loss blowout lostto Providence, well that was the game.
You know, they were blown outat Arizona too, but the Providence
game was the one where I thinkit seemed to me that Greg was as
upset as I've seen him in along time. He just didn't like the
(04:21):
didn't like the effort. They tooka couple of blows early in the game
and just staggered and never and justthey weren't themselves on that night in Providence.
That was a big deal for Providenceat the time. And they're,
you know, they're a good team. They've suffered a key injury, young
man named Bryce Hopkins tore up hisknee and he's done for the year.
That happened last week, but Imean the feeling out of going out of
(04:44):
the building there was that you know, there are Providence is a good team
and not a great team. Wisconsinshould have played them better. But I
think one of the things that happenedis the older guys started to be older
in a good way. You know, if it's Stephen Kroud, Tyler Wall,
that group, everybody, he justkind of you get humbled so a
lot in sports, and it's howyou respond from that, and these guys
(05:06):
took it to heart and they wentback to work, and all these coaches,
from Greg to his assistance, theytalked about how coachable this team is.
I know you're always supposed to bethat way, but in today's world
that can be a bit more ofa challenge. But this group accepts hard
coaching and then they dust themselves offand they go back to work. And
(05:27):
then there's the obvious stuff Ben withthe better depth that they have and the
scoring ability with someone like an ajStore, But it's not just him.
I mean, he obviously gives thema dimension that they did not have last
year. But you get Blackwell offthe bench, Nolan Winter is doing some
good things. So you got acouple of freshmen and then a sophomore transfer,
(05:48):
and then guys like Wall and kraware playing better, and then you
can really deep dive this. Lastyear, this team was at a pretty
low percentage of two point shots thatwent in. They have made a sizable
jump to this point of the seasonwhere instead of being one of the worst
teams inside the three point line, they've been one of the better ones in
(06:11):
Division one basketball, at least atthis point. Long way to go,
but there are a lot of encouragingsigns. Next up for Wisconsin, they
hit the road Wednesday night to takeon Ohio State in Columbus Matts. Ohio
State coming off a lost to Indianathis past Saturday, so it's going to
be a good matchup for the Bangerson the road here. Always tough to
take on any Big ten team onthe road. Yeah, you talk about
(06:31):
the weather. The biggest challenge isgoing to be getting out of here because
you tend to leave the day beforethe game, then the day before the
game with the Tuesday, So we'llsee how that goes. Yeah, Ohio
State is an improved team. Iknow they got they got humbled at Indiana,
but Indiana got humbled in its previousgame on the road at Nebraska.
That's just how it works in collegebasketball or a lot of times sports in
(06:53):
general. But you know, thebuck Eys like Wisconsin are trying to get
back to their winning ways in Wisconsinthe nit last year Ohio State did not
play in any postseason tournament. They'vehad a couple guys who have raised their
levels from freshman to sophomore years,Bruce Thornton, Roddy Gale, today two,
(07:13):
a couple of big transfers including JamisonBattle, the former Minnesota Gopher.
He can be a prolific three pointshooter for Ohio State. But again without
getting born the listeners to death. Here is intriguing because Ohio State is a
really good offensive rebounding team and Wisconsinis a really good defensive rebounding team.
(07:33):
In other words, the Badgers don'tgive up a lot of second chances.
But that's where Ohio State excels. So you got a lot of different angles
in this game. But that's oneof particular interest to many Wisconsin Ohio State
Wednesday night. You can hear itright here on IBAFN with this guy,
the voice of the Badgers, MattLefet his time with us brought to us
by Middleton Ford. So college Footballplayoff title game tonight, Matt Michigan versus
(07:56):
Washington. This year it's a Bigten versus Pac twelve matchup. Next year
this will be two big ten folks. So we got tonight Michigan Washington.
Yeah, but I have to admitI have seen much less of Washington.
I love their quarterback Michael Pennix.I remember him from his Indiana days.
We had bad luck staying healthy.I mean he had some you know,
significant injuries in this time with theHoosiers, but he's electrifying. But I
(08:20):
guess I'm probably should be done doubtingMichigan. They're I mean, they're really
good. They're really physical. Ithink Washington could be physical too, but
Michigan is just a team that itseems like the later the game goes,
the stronger they appear to be.You know, just you see what they
did with the Ohio State game watched, Yeah, they did. I think
they did the same with Alabama. They made some big plays, but they
(08:43):
just looked like they had a littlebit more in the tank as that game
was getting late into the fourth quarterand certainly into overtime. So they don't
really care about being pretty. Butthey're really good at what they do.
So I guess I would lean toMichigan to win, which would be interesting
because where we are going to Columbus, Ohio this week for the basketball,
so you can imagine the mood overthere to begin with. It'll be even
(09:07):
worse if Michigan wins tonight, ButI have a feeling that that's what's going
to happen. Yeah. Maybe suitsme as a Badger fan, but I
find it easier to root for Michiganthan I do Ohio State for some reason.
I don't know why that is,but it is what it is.
So I got to ask you aboutthe Packers. They obviously they beat the
Bears last night. They were inthe postseason. Nobody saw this coming from
Jordan Love, this team. Howimpressed were you last night by not only
(09:30):
his performance, but really this entireteam and what they're able to accomplish well.
With Jordan Love, it's just beentremendous to see his poise. I
mean, only he knows, andAaron Rodgers would know what that's like.
When you're following a legend, asRogers did with Brett farre as Jordan Love
is doing with with Aaron Rodgers, that's a lot of that's a lot of
(09:52):
weight on your shoulders in a sportssense, and the way he handles himself
a pois he has demonstrated. Itry to temper all this because I mean,
they're in the playoffs, which isreally impressive. They're nine and eight,
so I mean, I'm not readyto, you know, crown them
necessarily, but you really, Imean, at least from my corner of
(10:16):
the world, you have to beencouraged at the upside of this team.
This is the youngest team in theleague. It's one of the youngest teams.
It's the youngest team since the seventies, I believe to get into the
postseason. Now you got seven slots, which you didn't have that for in
the seventies. But yeah, Ithink they knew what they had to do.
(10:37):
They went out and did it,and it's a great launching pad for
this franchise moving forward. You know, I think the Bears are probably not
all that far away either, andyou see what the Lions have done.
I think this NFC North is goingto go from being you know, pretty
mediocre quite frankly, to a divisionthat might be as good as any in
(10:58):
the end NFL here in these nextcouple of years, because I think as
a Bears fan, you guess thingswill be excited about obvious question moving forward
with the draft pick. But they'reyoung, the Packers are young. I
think this division is really ramping uphere in the next couple of years.
Yeah, it's gonna be a lotof fun Packers Cowboys coming up on Sunday
(11:20):
